In this video Dr. Elizabeth Lombardo, PhD will talk about the basics of CBT and how it works. CBT describes several therapies that all have a similar approach to solving problems. They can range from anxiety or depression to insomnia or relationship problems. CBT is a combination of cognitive and behavioral therapy that focuses on the thoughts, images, beliefs and attitudes that we hold (our cognitive processes) and how they relate to the way we behave, as a way of dealing with emotional problems. CBT is based on the idea that your thoughts are what cause your feelings and behaviors, not external stimuli like people, situations and events. It’s not the stimulus itself that directly creates an emotional response. It is your evaluation of your thought about that stimulus. The benefit of this insight is that you can change the way you think, so that you feel and act better, even if the situation hasn’t changed. How CBT will help you: - CBT HELPS YOU TO IDENTIFY AND CHALLENGE YOUR SPECIFIC PROBLEMS CBT is a problem specific and pragmatic approach, because it helps you to identify your specific problems and then provides tools, so that you can work with them. CBT differs from other therapies, because the sections have a structure, rather than the person talking/thinking freely about whatever comes to mind. In the next section, you will identify your specific problems that contribute to making you feel unhappy, and set up goals to work towards. The problems may be troublesome symptoms, such as sleeping badly, not being able to socialize with friends or difficulty concentrating on reading or work. They could also be life problems, such as being unhappy at work, having trouble dealing with an adolescent child or being in an unhappy marriage. - CBT TEACHES YOU TO THINK IN A DIFFERENT WAY CBT is particularly well-developed and empirically supported (research supported). This is important when clients frequently experience excessively negative thoughts which arise automatically, even in response to stimuli which might otherwise be experienced as positive. CBT helps you to understand the importance of thinking and how it affects how you feel and what you do. It is one of the core fundamentals of this online therapy program. It will help you to work on your problems and to become happier. CBT will teach you skills for dealing with your problems. This includes learning to record your thoughts and to look at them more realistically. You will do this in your journal. In this video, Dr. Elizabeth Lombardo, PhD will talk about anxiety and how CBT can help you if you are suffering from anxiety. First of all, anxiety - in small doses - does not harm us. In fact, it helps us to stay alert and focused and to deal with challenging situations. Feeling anxious from time to time is just normal. But when you can't seem to shake your concerns and your daily life is a constant state of worry and fear, then anxiety has taken an unhealthy grip on your life. Anxiety is not one-dimensional, but instead vary from person to person. One person might get panicky at the thought of stepping into an elevator or speaking with strangers, while another may suffer from intense anxiety attacks that strike without apparent reason. Even though the face of anxiety varies, the common denominator is always the same: having constant fear or worry in situations that most other people would experience as problem-free. Common emotional symptoms of anxiety: - Constant feeling of worry and fear - Having problems concentrating - Irrational catastrophic thinking - Fear of losing control - Feeling of impending danger - Feeling irritable and restless - Constant feeling of being overwhelmed Anxiety is our body's ancient and innate response to stressful and dangerous situations, a reaction called “fight, flight or freeze". When we are in a life-threatening situation - like being attacked by an aggressive animal or person - our bodies autonomic nervous system is activated to help us to quickly get to safety by becoming stronger, faster or acting dead. The threatening message that our brain receives lead to our body to secrete stress hormones, like adrenaline, increasing our experience of severe anxiety. The sympathetic nervous system causes the blood to move from your skin, stomach, fingers and toes into the bigger muscles like the arms and the legs. Necessary senses are being enhanced; the pupils dilate, your vision and hearing become clearer, your heart races and your breathing becomes faster to get more oxygen to your lungs and the digestive system slows. The problem with this built in system in modern society is that your body reacts exactly the same to a perceived fear and thoughts like “did I forget to turn off the stove” – as if you were in a life-threatening situation. When suffering from anxiety, it’s common that you experience all or some of these physical symptoms. Common physical symptoms of anxiety: - Rapid heartbeat - Shortness of breath - Excessive sweating - Dryness in the mouth - Headaches - Frequent urination - Dizziness - Stomach cramps and diarrhea - Muscle tension - Feeling of tiredness or problems sleeping For the early man in the Stone Age, the body’s automatic alarm system was absolutely necessary for survival. But during that time, man only experienced short periods of stress peaks, such as in life threatening situations. When the danger was over, the stress level and body returned to a normal state. Today, more and more people experience an increased stress and anxiety level for long periods of time. This is where it gets problematic. If you experience anxiety over a long period, this severely harms your body. This is primarily because your body never gets time to fully recover, which can make you ill. Your immune system is compromised and you are more likely to develop infections or suffer from a heart attack, stroke, high blood pressure and high cholesterol. Do you have feelings of sadness and hopelessness, problems sleeping or are you experiencing a loss of energy and interest in daily activities? Feeling sad or having mood swings are just normal reactions to the ups and downs of life that everybody experiences. But if emptiness, worthlessness and helplessness have taken hold of your life and will not go away, you may be suffering from depression. The symptoms of depression are often subtle at first and can be varied. Many people don’t even realize they are suffering from depression. Signs and symptoms of depression: - Changes in your feelings: Depression affects the way you feel about your life. It often creates feelings of helplessness, hopelessness and worthlessness. When you are depressed, it is common to keep telling yourself negative things like "It's never ever going to get better", "There is nothing that I can do to improve my situation", "I am worthless", etc. - Loss of interest in your daily activities: When you are depressed, the things that normally would give you joy and pleasure no longer do so. If you feel that you no longer enjoy your hobby, sport, hanging out with your friends and family – and even try to avoid these situations as much as possible – it is very likely that you are depressed. - Changes in your appetite or weight: Depression affects people in different ways, when it comes to appetite and weight. Some people comfort themselves with food and others can't even bear the thought of food. An important factor when it comes to linking weight changes and depression, is whether or not the change has been intentional. If you did not intend to lose (or gain) weight that is a strong sign that you need help. - Feeling tired and experience loss of energy: When you are depressed, it is very common that you constantly feel tired. It can even be described as walking around all day feeling like a zombie, with your mind and body feeling physically drained. Being tired all the time, of course, hinders your daily activities. Instead of doing your hobbies and sports, you just want to curl up on your couch and pull your blanket over your head. - Changes in your sleep pattern: Depression almost always affects your sleep. Either you sleep too little (insomnia in the worst cases) or too much (hypersomnia in the worst cases). You may find it impossible to sleep and/or wake up 2-3 hours before you need to get up. Your mind may spin with negative thoughts making it impossible for you to go to sleep/go back to sleep. When depressed - even if you do get your 7-9 hours of sleep - it is also common to wake up extremely tired. - Feeling more irritable than usual: Your tolerance level is lower than usual and your temper is short. This makes you feel that everything and everyone is getting on your nerves. You might be able to keep up your facade at work, but once you get home you snap at your family and friends. Sometimes you feel guilty afterwards, while other times you are too numb to even care. - Feeling anxious and nervous: When you are depressed, being anxious and nervous is also very normal. Anxiety produces several physical symptoms like headaches, pain in the jaw (due to clenching your jaws during the day), chest pain, stomach pain and indigestion. Just receiving an email or hearing the phone ringing at work, can evoke these physical symptoms. - Having unexplained physical problems: Your increase in physical problems, such as headaches, back pain, aching muscles and stomach pain, can be painful signs of depression. The more physical symptoms you have, without any clear reasons, the more likely is it that you are suffering from depression. - Having uncontrollable mood swings: Depression can have an uncontrollable effect on your mood. Your emotions are up and down like you have never experienced before. One minute you are angry and the next minute you are crying.
