This is episode 4 of our video series for studying the recent cue cards
0:06
The topics in this video are, First, describe a time you bought something from a street market
0:12
Second, describe a time you picked an item that was lost by someone else
0:18
And third, describe a uniform that you wear. My name is Julius. I help students achieve their target band scores in their IELTS speaking test and IELTS writing test
0:30
Let's begin. First is a time you bought something from a street market
0:36
Your challenge here is how you develop a story that is interesting and you don't sound boring
0:45
Now, the best thing that you can do here is to develop a story in which you are more focused on talking about your experience and the story behind the item that you bought
0:58
For example, let's say you bought a souvenir item from a street market and that souvenir item is normally expensive
1:07
However, you used your negotiation skills, you haggled the price because you wanted to save money
1:15
You wanted to get some discounts. And you successfully did that. However, you realized the story or you learned the story behind the item that you bought
1:29
For instance, this souvenir item was handmade and part of the sale of this souvenir item would be donated to a charity organization that saves abandoned dogs
1:44
When you knew that, you felt guilty for asking for a discount
1:50
And you realized that you should not have asked a discount because the proceeds of that sale or part of the sale of that souvenir item would be donated to a charity organization
2:04
Because you realized that, you just paid the exact price. You know, something like that
2:12
That makes your story interesting or unique. When you add a story behind the item that you bought, you'll be able to express yourself more
2:24
And of course, you'll be able to capture the attention of your examiner
2:28
When you do that, your examiner will definitely believe in your ability to communicate your thoughts in English
2:37
And that is very good. It shows that you really know how to develop a story in English with confidence
2:47
Easy. Congratulations to my student, Leon, for getting a band 7 on her first attempt at taking the IELTS speaking test

Next, a time when you picked up an item that was lost by someone else
3:43
So, some common things that are commonly lost by someone are a house key, a car key, a pen, a wallet, an ATM card, and many more
3:53
Now, when you introduce your story, I want you to have a creative introduction so that you can really show your communication skills to your examiner
4:04
Instead of saying, I'd like to talk with you about an item that I found which was lost by someone, try adding a statement in your intro
4:16
For example, you can say like this. People nowadays are so preoccupied or distracted by so many things, and as a result, they easily lose some important items
4:30
I myself had that experience of that. So, last week, I found a wallet while I was hiking
4:39
See that? That sounds creative. And I was able to utilize my communication skills more
4:46
If your English level is beginner or intermediate, this needs more practice in order for you to gain more confidence in creating a creative introduction
4:58
But nothing is impossible. Everything is possible if you keep on practicing
5:05
So, it's really achievable to have an introduction that is creative. Just practice
5:13
So, going back to my example, I can simply highlight how I returned that wallet and whether or not the owner of that wallet was able to get that wallet back
5:25
Then, I can simply give an opinion about the famous saying, finders keepers, so I can make my story more interesting
5:36
For example, I can say like this. I don't believe in the saying finders keepers because the best thing one can do when he finds an item that's lost by someone else is to return it
5:54
We have to practice social responsibility to foster better relationships. See? That sounds creative
6:04
And that adds more value to my story. And that makes my story more interesting, which I'm pretty sure my examiner will be more interested in that story of mine
6:17
That's how you do it. Let's have a uniform that you wear
6:22
So that your examiner can visualize or can imagine the appearance of your uniform, you have to provide descriptive words
6:32
But before doing that, I want you to tell your examiner the type of uniform that you wear at work
6:38
For healthcare workers, it's usually scrub. For corporate workers, it's usually a suit and a tie or a casual type of uniform like a polo shirt with a company's logo
6:54
Then after that, describe the style or the color of that uniform
6:59
And for you to talk more, I want you to talk about the importance of wearing a uniform
7:04
For example, if you're a healthcare worker, wearing your uniform lets the general public know that you are the right person whom they can ask for help if there's an emergency or if there's an accident
7:21
If you're a student, you can talk about how wearing your uniform teaches you self-discipline and how wearing your uniform avoids social discrimination
7:36
Because basically, wearing a uniform promotes equality. I think when you add that to your story, you'll be able to talk more and you'll be able to make your story more valuable or more meaningful
7:52
And for sure, that will impress your examiner, especially if you deliver your story spontaneously, naturally, and confidently
8:01
