What Actually Caused The Beatles To Break Up?
Jun 22, 2026
The Beatles changed music forever. But despite their unprecedented success, the foursome's shocking breakup has remained one of rock's biggest mysteries for decades.
According to reports, by the late 1960s, Paul McCartney was still pushing ahead with the same drive and ambition that had helped make The Beatles a global phenomenon. However, Lennon had reportedly become increasingly restless and disillusioned with Beatlemania, creating an even deeper divide between the group's two biggest creative forces.
And behind the scenes, business matters only added fuel to the fire. After the band's manager, Brian Epstein, sadly died in 1967, the group struggled to agree on who should lead them next.
McCartney strongly opposed hiring controversial manager Allen Klein, while Lennon, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr all supported the move. Recalling the moment he was outvoted, McCartney famously said, "Well, this is like bloody Julius Caesar, and I'm being stabbed in the back!"
