0:00
hello good morning and uh welcome back to our study of the book of hebrews
0:05
so this is actually a very cold day the wind is really strong it's like almost like 4 55 in the morning but i love to
0:12
get up early in the morning and get my work done because it's quiet my mind is more composed so this is the time this
0:19
is the best time for me to actually convey information so today we're gonna go back to chapter eight
0:25
and finish it today okay so we're gonna zero in on verses to 13. but before we go on ahead and
0:32
dive into the verses let's quickly review what we talked about last week and we we need to recall that the writer
0:39
of this letter was addressing primarily jewish unbelievers and these people were going through very difficult times they
0:46
were being persecuted as a result of their faith in christ so the temptation again was to go back to the old system
0:54
established under moses so in the beginning verses of chapter 8 after his introduction of melchizedek and his
1:01
superior ministry in comparison to the levites the writer established via scripture that jesus was indeed a high
1:08
priest after the order of melchizedek and we we really talked a lot about melchizedek so if you if you if you
1:15
haven't seen my uh other studies i would encourage you to go back and look at melchizedek fully because this
1:21
is really important to understanding the rest of this portion so i believe one of the questions that
1:28
the writer was trying to answer was the location of the tabernacle where jesus
1:33
was ministering okay in the first six verses we saw that jesus was performing
1:38
he is our duties in the true tabernacle in heaven not the one on
1:44
earth but the one in heaven the one that served as a pattern for the inferior tabernacle on earth so basically the
1:51
writer was establishing that to show that listen the earthly tabernacle is just a replica of the actual tabernacle
1:59
in heaven so fix your gaze on that so he talked about the location of jesus
2:04
ministry and where jesus was offering his sacrifice actually he said he did it
2:10
once and for all when he offered his body on the cross so we talked about that and then we talked about the the better
2:17
promises of the new covenant we didn't talk about all the promises so we just introduced the the concept so today
2:23
we're going to talk fully on the br about the better promises of the new covenant again hebrews chapter 8 all the
2:31
chapters are really complex so it you know i would encourage you to go back and read it yourself because this is
2:37
great news in those verses and for us who are not uh jewish believers we are
2:42
gentiles it is still great news because you see the truth of god just being
2:48
like disclosed to us like this in those verses and it's amazing so i'll encourage you to go back and look at it
2:54
don't just look at the information to your store uh more knowledge in your mind but let that transform you and that's what i'm
3:00
i'm going after i want to be transformed by the things that i read i want that to completely change the way i live my life
3:07
okay so we're gonna pick up on from verse seven and we're gonna go to verse 13 so
3:12
i'm gonna read the scripture and then we're gonna try to understand and unpack this passage so verse 7 read
3:19
4 if that first covenant had been faultless there would have been no occasion to
3:25
look for a second for he finds fault with them when he says behold the days are coming declares
3:33
the lord when i will establish a new covenant with the house of israel and with the house of judah
3:39
not like the covenant that i made with their fathers on the day when i took them by the hand to bring them out of
3:45
the land of egypt for they did not continue in my covenant
3:51
and so i showed no concern for them declares the lord for this is the
3:56
covenant that i will make with the house of israel after those days declares the
4:02
lord i will put my laws into their minds and write them on their heart and i will
4:07
be their god and they shall be my people and they shall not teach each one of his
4:12
neighbor and each one his brother saying know the lord for they shall all know me
4:18
from the least of them to the greatest because i will be merciful to toward their iniquities and i will remember
4:24
their sins no more in speaking of a new covenant he makes the first one obsolete
4:31
and what is becoming obsolete and growing old is ready to vanish away
4:37
again this is the word of god and let us take it as such this is truth okay
4:44
now we're gonna try to dissect on this chapter so basically in the first um but
4:51
god is the one who established the first covenant and he's also the one who declared it weak and inadequate
4:57
incomplete through the words of jeremiah the prophet in general 31 31 34.
5:03
we're going to look at that in a second so god basically anticipated that his people would not quite understand the
5:09
weakness and incompleteness of the old covenant and his purpose which was solely intended to lead them to the new
5:16
covenant pioneers by pioneered by christ so that was the intention so he spoke sobering words through the prophet
5:22
jeremiah which i believe we need to look at thoroughly so let's check that out
5:28
let me go and then read jeremiah 31 verse 31 to 34. listen to the scripture
5:34
behold the days are coming declares the lord when i would make a new covenant
5:39
with the house of israel and the house of judah not like the covenant that i made with their fathers on the day when
5:46
i took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of egypt my covenant that is broke though i was their husband
5:53
declares the lord for this is the covenant that i will make with the house of israel after those days declares the
5:59
lord i will put my lord within them and i will write them on their heart and i will be their god and they shall be my
6:05
people and no longer shall each one teach his neighbor and each his brother saying
6:11
know the lord for they shall all know me from the least of them to the greatest declares the lord for i will forgive
6:18
their iniquity and i remember their sin no more we need to look at this more thoroughly and understand what's going
6:24
on here through the word of jeremiah the prophet see when god says that for he finds
6:30
fault with them when he says behold the days are coming declares the lord when i will establish a new covenant with the
6:37
house of israel and with the house of judah not like the covenant that i made with their father on the day when i took
6:42
them by the hand to bring them out of the land of egypt for they did not continue in my covenant and so assured
6:49
no concern for them declares the lord why do you think the writer is bringing
6:55
this up in this argument here again he's trying to show that the old covenant is being set aside
7:01
and the new is coming okay god was not pleased with his people under the old
7:07
covenant he was not pleased at all therefore he set to establish a new covenant with the house of israel and
7:12
with the house of judah and before we look at the old covenant we need to answer like a couple of
7:18
questions verse 8 seems to disqualify gentile believers okay because the scriptures
7:24
say for he finds fault with them he says he's going to make a new covenant with the house of israel and with the house
7:29
of judah so it seems as if god is like i am not interested in the gentiles and
7:34
that is not the case because we need to answer this question we need to really answer this objection because people might look at this and be like well this
7:41
only applies to the jews so is that so are the gentiles excluded
7:47
so i can say confidently that this is not the case and we're going to lean on scriptures
7:52
for our answers so the lord again he chose the jewish nation so that through
7:58
them other nations will come to know him that was his whole purpose in choosing them
8:03
so if you go to romans 1 uh verse 16 let's read what the scripture says here
8:08
for i am not ashamed of the gospel for it is the power of god for salvation to
8:14
everyone who believes to the jew first and also to the greek you see and if you go to
8:22
romans 2 verse 17 to 20 but if you call yourself a jew and rely
8:27
on the law and boast in god and know his will and approve what is excellent because you are instructed from the law
8:34
and if you are sure that you yourself are a guide to the blind and the light to those in darkness an instructor of
8:42
the foolish a teacher of children having in the law the embodiment of knowledge and truth so you see that the scriptures
8:49
say a light to those who are in darkness that's what they were supposed to be and
8:54
if you go to chapter 3 there's also another reference there that i would like to read for you verse 1 2 and verse
9:00
on 29 30 listen then what advantage has the jew or what
9:06
is the value of circumcision much in every way to begin with the jews
9:12
were what entrusted with the oracles of god
9:18
you see that the jews were entrusted with the oracles of god that was the purpose he gave them his oracle so that
9:25
other nations would come to know jesus through them to come to know yahweh
9:30
through them and in verse 29 and 30 listen to this listen to what the scriptures say or
9:37
is god the god of jews only is he not
9:42
the god of gentiles also yes of gentiles also since god is one
9:49
who will justify the circumcised by faith and the uncircumcised through
9:55
faith so you see that indirectly the gentiles are included we are included
10:01
indirectly okay so basically god chose that nation so
10:06
that through them other nations will come to know him okay so when god made a covenant with with the jewish nation the
10:13
main purpose was so that all other nations will also come to faith through them believing in the true god we see
10:20
plenty of examples like this in the old testament if you know about naaman naaman the leper he was syrian
10:27
okay the commander of the syrian army he came to believe in the god of the hebrews the queen of sheba came to
10:33
believe in god when she saw the wisdom of solomon now sheba the queen of sheba i think is the ethiopian queen okay
10:39
that's in first kings 10 verse 9. and moses own wife was a gentile she was
10:45
ethiopian and joseph had an egyptian wife so i'm saying all this to say that gentiles
10:50
were always in the mind of god so while israel was his chosen nation
10:56
directly the gentiles were also chosen indirectly they were also part of the plane they
11:02
were supposed to be the jewish nation was supposed to be the role model they were supposed to point out to to yahweh
11:08
so god always had the gentiles in mind they were included in the promises of god indirectly basically so we were
11:14
included so god chose the jewish nation that they might lead the remnant of the
11:19
world to him so now that i've cleared this let us look at the old covenant and what it entailed
11:26
so god made a covenant with israel through moses on mount sinai and that's recorded in exodus 19. and i just want
11:34
to zero in on verse verses five to six now listen to what the scripture says now therefore if you will indeed obey my
11:41
voice and keep my covenant you shall be my treasured possession among all
11:47
peoples for all the earth is mine and you shall be to me a kingdom of priests and a holy nations these are the words
11:54
that you shall speak to the people of israel now you see the purposes of god that you shall be what to me a kingdom
12:00
of priests and a holy nation so they were supposed to keep and obey the covenant of god so god made a covenant
12:07
with them and he gave them the law so they had to abide by the law but let's see let's find out what happened
12:14
so basically excuse me when god revealed himself from on mount
12:20
sinai we read on the final reaction from the people of god is recorded for us in exodus psalm 20 verse 18 to 21. listen
12:27
to what people say now when all the people saw the thunder and the flashes of lightning and the
12:34
sound of the trumpet and the mountain smoking the people were afraid and trembled and they stood far off and said
12:42
to moses you speak to us and we will listen but do not let god speak to us
12:47
lest we die moses said to the people do not fear for god has come to test you that the
12:54
fear of him may be before you that you may not sin the people stood far off
13:00
while moses drew near to the thick darkness where god was see the people were afraid and they did
13:07
not want to develop an intimacy with god moses enjoyed a one-on-one intimate
13:13
relationship with god he longed to be in the presence of god he wanted to be but the people were terrified and loved what
13:20
moses desired because of their dread of god okay and this is the natural reaction of
13:27
unholy people before a holy god fear but god was also revealing his love and
13:33
grace to them and they missed it and remained far off they told moses you go talk to god
13:39
and we will listen we don't want any part of that so they didn't develop an intimacy with god because of their fear
13:44
and they i mean yes god came and said listen i want my fear to be in you so that you may not sin against me because
13:51
i am a holy god they needed to know that so they promised to keep
13:56
his covenant and obey him but 40 days after moses went to meet god
14:01
in order to receive the tablets of stone on which the law was engraved the people completely forgot their promises and
14:09
engaged in idolatry and committed sexual immorality you know what they asked
14:15
aaron they told him hey listen we don't know what happened to this moses may cause an idol a calf and that we would worship
14:22
because that's what brought us out of egypt so 40 days that's all it took they went they forgot about all the
14:28
promises that they made to god they said they were gonna listen they forgot about all about it and they broke the covenant
14:34
the same people that promised under fear that they were going to wholeheartedly or serve god completely they dismissed
14:41
them okay and the consequences were dire because many lies were lost a lot of people died as a result and that pattern
14:48
of making promises and breaking them was a recurring theme with the jewish nation so what do
14:54
we learn from this this is important okay the law of god is perfect and good
14:59
and it's spiritual yet people could not keep the law under the
15:05
old covenant why we need to know why because the law was powerless to save
15:11
therefore god promised to make a new covenant because people under the old
15:17
covenant were doomed to fail due to his weakness they could not keep the law and we're going to find out why because
15:23
of the sinful nature of man this is why so let's keep moving on so in verse 10
15:29
we read the following for this is the covenant that i will make with the house of israel after those days declares the
15:36
lord i will put my laws into their minds and write them on their hearts and i
15:41
will be their god and they shall be my people so in verse 8 9 god says that
15:47
he's going to make a new covenant with the people of israel because the old one they could not keep they just couldn't
15:53
do it okay so god promises that he's going to make a new covenant because because the people broke his law he
15:59
showed no concern to them because it was they had a covenant they didn't do their
16:06
part they didn't keep the law of god so therefore a lot of them we see that throughout the history
16:12
of the jewish nation they will they will do on the work of god and then they fall back into sin and he sends a
16:18
prophet and they promise to repent and they fall back into the scene again and eventually they were um taken into
16:24
captivity because that thing can happen it kept happening the same thing can happen over and over and finally they
16:30
got taken away from their land taken down to um babylon okay
16:36
so now god says i'm gonna make a new covenant with you because this one you couldn't keep and then i showed no
16:42
regard to you so he said now i'm gonna make a new covenant and this is the covenant that he promises to make with
16:47
them he says i will put my laws into their minds and write them on their heart and i'll be their god and they
16:54
shall be my people now what can we say from this so the writer has just proved
16:59
to his readers that the old covenant was indeed weak and just temporary it was
17:05
supposed to be provisional okay it wasn't supposed to be lasting now he's now presenting the new covenant with
17:11
better promises but before we look at the promises we need to look at when the new covenant was established that is so
17:17
crucial we need to look at it okay this is very important if you go to luke 22
17:23
verse 19 to 21 let's look at this that's before jesus goes to the cross listen to what he says to his disciples
17:30
and he took bread and when he had given thanks he broke it and gave it to them saying
17:37
this is my body which is given for you
17:43
do this in remembrance of me and likewise the cup after they had eaten saying this cup
17:50
this cup that is poured out for you is what is the new car vent in my blood let me repeat that
17:58
again this cup that is poured out for you is the new covenant in my blood but behold
18:05
the hand of emo betrays me is with me on the table so jesus in those words
18:11
basically fulfills part of jeremiah 31 okay he says this
18:17
cup that is poured out for you is the new covenant in my blood basically god promises that he was going to make a new
18:24
covenant and on that day jesus was saying to them this is the day god was talking about that he will make a new
18:30
covenant i am now the fulfillment of the new covenant i am i'm about to go to the cross and this is going to happen right
18:37
now behold the days are coming decrease the lord when i make a new covenant with
18:42
the house of israel in the house of judah and jesus is the what he's the pioneer of the new covenant he is the
18:48
one that inaugurated that covenant as he spoke to his disciples and took the cup and the bread said this is this is the
18:54
blood of the new covenant now this is incredible i mean this is crazy stuff
19:00
man so jesus basically inaugurated the new covenant so the fulfillment of jeremiah
19:05
31 31 to 34 is in jesus okay part of it so those words came to pass when jesus
19:12
lifted up the cup in front of his disciples and declared that the cup represented what the new covenant god
19:19
was making with his people through the precious blood of jesus christ now this
19:24
is incredible and the argument of the writer is concise clear scriptural
19:30
valid and cannot be rejected now this is just the covenant that he promises to make
19:36
now we're going to look at the promises of the new covenant what better promises are in there now you see the writers is
19:43
progressing first it shows that what the old covenant was weak okay because god himself said
19:50
that he was going this was weak and god himself promised that he was going to make a new covenant with the people and now that he has their attention now
19:57
listen these people are listening to this for the first time so you can imagine how much they are getting okay this is like this is probably
20:04
they are probably sitting there go wow this is amazing for us we read this over and over and we don't find the joy in
20:11
this this is incredible news okay so let's keep going
20:17
for this is the covenant that i will make with the house of israel after those days declares the lord i will put my laws into their minds and
20:26
write them on their hearts and i will be their god and they shall be my people you see
20:31
under the old covenant even though people had the law they could not keep it because of their
20:37
sinful nature as we saw in romans 7. as a result they came under what under
20:42
judgment because romans 7 the law is spiritual the law is good but i am of the flesh
20:48
soul than the sin because the sinful nature has that much power so under the
20:54
old covenant all the lord did was allowed you seen use the law to work in mankind
21:01
all types of what death works so the law was good the law was spiritual the law
21:07
is holy but because of our sinful nature people could not keep the law under the
21:12
old covenant they had the law but they could not keep it so in the new covenant established by
21:18
jesus as we saw in luke 22 listen to what happened
21:23
god himself ensures that his laws are inserted in the people's minds and written on their
21:30
heart not on external tablets of stones in order that his people might obey and keep his word so god himself is the one
21:38
that ensures that people keep his law because what he says i'll do what
21:44
i will write them on their hearts and put them into their minds so and as a
21:49
result of their obedience god promises now to now regard them he says i will be what their god and they
21:56
shall be my people in the old covenant when people disobeyed god he said he
22:01
showed no concern for them so the best way to interpret verse 10 verse 10 is a close look at ezekiel 36
22:08
26-27 listen to what the scripture says ezekiel 36 verse 26 to 27
22:15
i will give you a new heart and a new spirit i will put within you
22:22
and i will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh
22:29
and i will put my spirit within you and cause you to walk in my statute and be
22:34
careful to obey my rules i need to repeat this again and i will remove
22:40
the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh
22:45
and i will put my spirit within you and do what and cause you to walk in my
22:53
statute and be careful to obey my rules you see all the promises
22:59
rest on god not the people this is the difference god himself is the one that ensures that
23:05
people walk in his ways because guess what the sinful nature was powerless
23:12
the sinful nature could not do it so the scripture says that god himself ensures that with the new covenant
23:19
he himself ensures that the people walk in his ways because he says i will put what my spirit within you
23:26
the spirit of god himself will come and do what tabernacle in his people the spirit of god will come and dwell with
23:32
people and then as a result they will love the things of god they will love the law of god they will love obeying
23:39
god yes there's still going to be a struggle as we see in galatians 5 but the spirit of god now has dominion
23:46
because he has now come and dwelled within us and he causes us to love the things of god
23:52
this is why the old covenant was weak because under the old covenant people didn't have the power of the holy spirit
23:59
in them to help them the sinful nature hates the law of god
24:05
you cannot submit to the law of god if you go to romans 8 verse 7 listen to what the scripture says
24:10
for the mind that is set on the flesh is what is hostile to god for it does not
24:16
submit to god's law indeed it can not those who are in the flesh cannot please
24:24
god but then the scripture says later but if you are enjoyed by the spirit of god then you are a child of god so basically
24:31
the mind that is set on the flesh the old nature cannot keep the law of god because he
24:38
cannot this is why god says i'll make a new covenant in which now i'm gonna enable you to keep my law it is god
24:45
himself who works in us both to will and act according to his good purpose through the holy spirit
24:51
so the writer is now telling his original listeners and us ultimately that this new covenant
24:57
has far better promises and we've talked about the first promise
25:02
the law the lord himself promises to give us a new heart and he promises to do what
25:08
write his laws on our minds and they shall be what we we will be his people he will be our god okay this is again
25:14
first of the jews and the gentiles next so now can you imagine like listening to
25:19
those words for the first time how do you think they felt okay now to talk about this more i want to go to second
25:25
corinthians 3. he tells us more about the the the new uh covenant
25:32
paul talks about this so let's go to second corinthians three i guess i'm gonna read the entire chapter because i
25:37
think it's important that i do that listen to what um paul says here again paul is defending his ministry because
25:44
he always had to defend himself because he was not one of the original 12
25:49
people kept on questioning his authority so now again listen to what he says here in chapter three of second corinthians
25:56
are we beginning again to commend ourselves or do we need or some do
26:01
letters of recommendation to you or from you you yourselves are our letter of recommendation written on our heart to
26:08
be known and read by all and you show that you are a letter from christ delivered by us written not on
26:15
ink but with the spirit of the living god you see that written not with ink but
26:22
with the spirit of the living god not on tablets of stone but on tablets of human
26:27
heart again he contrasts the old and the new and paul says
26:33
such is the confidence that we have through christ toward god not that we are sufficient in ourselves to claim
26:40
anything as coming from us but our sufficiency is from god who has
26:45
made us sufficient to be ministers of a new covenant not not of the letter
26:51
but of the spirit for the letter does what the letter kills but the spirit gives life the law we
26:58
cannot keep it so he kills us okay the law does not have anything about
27:05
the law kills basically because when you read the law you shall not you shall not do this and people can keep it so the
27:11
law kills but the spirit gives life now if the ministry of death that is the old
27:17
ministry carved in letters on stone came with such glory that the israelites could not gaze at
27:23
moses because of his glory which was being brought to an end will not the ministry
27:28
of the spirit have even more glory for if there was glory in the ministry of condemnation
27:34
the ministry of righteousness must far exceed it in glory indeed in this case
27:40
what what once had glory has come to have no glory at all because of the glory that surpasses it now you see how
27:47
paul is going about this for it was for if what was being brought to an end came with glory
27:54
much more with what is permanent half glory since we have such a hope we are very
28:00
bold not like moses who put a veil over his face so that the israelite might not gaze at the outcome
28:07
of what was being brought to an end but their minds were hardened for to this day when you read the old covenant
28:14
that's in veil remains unlifted because only through christ is it taken away
28:19
yes to this day whenever moses is read a veil lies over their heart but when one
28:25
turns to the lord the veil is removed now the lord is the spirit and where the spirit of the lord
28:30
is there is freedom and we are with unveiled face beholding the glory of the lord are
28:36
being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another for
28:42
this comes from the lord who is the spirit now you see what the spirit of god does and this is why god say he's
28:48
going to give them a new heart and a new spirit because because of the spirit of god now people were able to obey the law
28:55
of god because the law love the law of god because the spirit of god loves the things of god
29:01
and paul gives us a history there of the the the the old covenant fading
29:07
away and leading to the new covenant that was the purpose the purpose of the old covenant was to lead us to the new
29:13
covenant to delete the people of god but they didn't didn't see they missed it
29:19
okay now listen to what he says in verse 11 and they shall not teach each one his
29:24
neighbor and each one is brother saying know the lord for they shall all know me from the least of them to the greatest
29:32
now there's an immediate application to this verse and he refers to the day when both
29:37
the hearts of israel and judah shall be united and rejoice in the promised kingdom of god if you go to acts 1 verse
29:44
6 to 7 jesus says in acts 1 when the disciple asked him is he going
29:51
to restore the kingdom to israel now listen to what jesus says so when they had come together they asked them lord
29:57
will you at this time restore the kingdom of israel to israel and he said to them it is not
30:03
for you to know the times or seasons that the father has fixed by his own authority so basically
30:11
eventually the kingdom will be restored to israel because jesus himself says it is not for you to know the time so
30:17
that's going to happen at some point and and jeremiah 31 31 to 34 talks about
30:24
it so i guess in that day there shall be no need to share the gospel because we would all know the lord personally okay
30:32
but i still think there is another possible way to to interpret this verse
30:37
there's another indirect application now again this is like something that i i wouldn't say this is the direct
30:43
application but i i think it's important that we also i also mentioned it okay now edifying like one another is good
30:49
and he's recommended but we need to take the word of god seriously the next um promise tells us
30:56
that under the new covenant the people have no need to be taught by one another to know god okay now this is not
31:01
implying disregarding the fellowship of believers the need of preaching evangelizing sharing the word of god and
31:07
exaltation but it talks about in a future in which we will not need that anymore when jesus comes back
31:13
but i do believe that in first john 2 verse 20 the scripture tells us but you have been
31:19
anointed by the holy one and you all have knowledge and in first john 2 27 the scripture
31:25
says but the anointing that you received from him abides in you and you have no need that anyone should teach you but as
31:31
his anointing teaches you about everything and is true and is no lie just as he has taught you abide in him
31:38
so basically the spirit of god himself has come to dwell within us god is now living in his people because
31:44
the scripture says that our body is a temple of the holy spirit and he's the one who discloses the knowledge truth
31:51
and love of god to us and through us so in other words god himself has become our teacher and it is the spirit of god
31:58
we enables us to love and know god because the spirit of god loves the things of god so
32:04
this should like really just overwhelms us and cause us to be filled with worship and because this is what god has done
32:10
through jesus now his spirit lives in us and his spirit gives us the strength and the ability
32:15
to read the word of god and understand it because the spirit of god is the originator of the word of god
32:21
so basically john in his days was he was facing false teachers in the church who brought
32:28
in some heresies and they they claim to have special knowledge and they claim to be this like secret bunch and and so
32:35
they were they were like gnostic teachers and they were talking about um what you do with your body doesn't
32:41
matter it's all about your spirit and therefore they say that you can indulge
32:46
in licentious living and that that it doesn't matter what you do with your body as long as your spirit you you
32:53
are in tune with your spirit so basically and they were leading people to live in sin so john is telling them
32:59
you don't need these people to teach you anything because the anointing you have received teaches you all things so basically we have the spirit of god
33:06
and the spirit of god will lead us away from her she's like this so he's telling them please focus on that so that's
33:12
again one of the promises that god gives his spirit now lives in us and as a result we can spot a heretic from a
33:19
mighty way because the spirit of god does not like heresies because the spirit of god is the spirit of what
33:24
truth okay so that's again one of the promises that we have now in verse 12 the scripture says for i
33:32
will be merciful toward the iniquities and i'll remember their sins no more see another promise attached with the new
33:39
covenant is the promise of what forgiveness see the law could not forgive because it
33:44
wasn't given for that purpose okay the law was not given to for forgiveness because through the law we
33:51
were supposed to see the sinfulness of our sinful nature the law was supposed to point us to
33:56
jesus christ because the law was supposed to say listen you cannot do it go to christ the coming messiah he is
34:02
going to be the one to save you because of his blood that was shed on the cross so if you go to galatians 3 verse 19
34:09
and galatians 3 verse 24 to 25 listen to the purpose of the lord in galatians 3 verse 19 what do we read
34:18
why then the law he was added because of transgressions until the offspring should come to whom
34:24
the promise had been made and it was put in place through angels by and by a
34:29
mediator okay and if you go to verse on 20
34:34
verse and 24 and 25 we read also this
34:40
so then the law was our guardian until christ came in order that we might be
34:45
justified by faith but now that faith has come we are no longer under a guardian
34:51
for for in christ jesus you are all sons of god through faith so again the law was our guardian the law was supposed to
34:57
keep us in check until the coming of the christ it can hear paul is addressing jewish
35:03
believers but i think i want to generalize this because i think it's important for us to understand that as
35:08
well okay so basically the only reason why the people of god will someday be in an
35:14
unbroken relationship and fellowship with god is because god will not hold their sins against them anymore because
35:20
of christ's sacrifice so he is the propitiation and the expiration for our sins and
35:26
again for the sins of all the people that put their trust in jesus this is why the new covenant has better promises
35:33
it is just one thing after the next and all because of the goodness and the grace of god and finally he says in
35:40
verse 13 in speaking of a new covenant he makes the first one obsolete
35:47
and what is becoming obsolete and growing old is ready to vanish away basically because god himself refers to
35:54
a new covenant that means that the old one is obsolete it's coming to an end because god himself has declared that
36:00
he's going to make a new covenant which means the old covenant is being done away with
36:06
and next week we're going to talk more about on the the old covenant practices
36:11
in the in the tabernacle of moses but right now you can see that a writer is basically he has his
36:17
reader's attention he's been shown them through scripture that listen you need to go you need to keep quit going back
36:24
to the old system the old covenant it is over that was just provisional it was supposed to be temporary it was supposed
36:31
to be leading you to christ because god himself through scripture had established that he was going to make a
36:36
new covenant under which you will be able to serve him all horribly because the spirit of god will come and dwell in
36:43
you okay this is great promises and the people that were listening to this i'm sure
36:48
some they probably didn't believe but to those that believed this was amazing news and i submitted that to you today
36:55
do you find this news amazing that god himself comes
37:01
and indulges you through his holy spirit to enable you to serve him and to love his law so it is god himself who works
37:07
in us both to will and act according to his purpose through his spirit because apart from the spirit of god we are dead
37:15
see this is why people talk about regeneration precede what salvation because it's the spirit of god that
37:21
comes first and then takes resonance in our heart and he shows us he changes the disposition of our heart
37:27
so that we see the beauty of christ because before that we hated the things of god i remember
37:33
several years ago before my salvation i was talking to a good friend of mine and he told me that unless uh becoming a christian i would
37:40
not see the kingdom of heaven and i was so mad at him i was infuriated i told him how dare you tell me that
37:48
because at that moment i was not enjoying the holy spirit okay i was acting under the flesh and
37:54
that's exactly what my response was supposed to be because the flesh nature
37:59
hate the things of god it cannot submit to the law of god he was repulsive to my mind i could not conceive of a god who
38:07
would not allow me into his kingdom because i didn't believe in jesus i'm like that is crazy again this is what
38:14
uh being living under the flesh is because the flesh the old nature
38:20
that nature of adam that we inherited from adam does not love the law of god
38:26
he cannot keep it this is why we hate the things of god by nature
38:32
without the spirit of god because it is the spirit of god who enables us to love him remember what david said
38:38
create in me a new heart and take not your holy spirit away from me because he understood that as soon as the holy
38:45
spirit the way the holy spirit is taken away if that happens i'll be a dead man
38:51
he saw saul because when saul was in dwelled the scripture says that he became a new man
38:56
okay but when saul when the spirit of god left him insanity came and saul kept
39:02
going falling and getting up falling again not falling and getting up so that's what happens this is why the new
39:08
covenant is amazing because now we have the capacity to obey god because his spirit lives in us
39:15
and god himself ensures that we obey him this is the beauty of the new covenant and our next week we're going to talk
39:21
about um the different pieces of the tabernacle of moses and what they represented so i encourage you to to
39:28
again go back to chapter 8 and look at it again the book of hebrews is dense it's big it's vast but the chief purpose
39:35
of it is to to prove the validity of the new covenant and that god in christ again was reconciling
39:43
the word to himself if you look at it he presents jesus as the son of god the priest after the order of melchizedek so
39:50
everything is supposed to point our eyes and our gaze to jesus because he has accomplished all this and he's the the
39:57
faithful minister of god he understands the human experience there's there's no other religion that
40:02
has that okay again um i'm not here to try to convince you
40:08
because it's not my job my job is to present the material it's the holy spirit that does what that does the work
40:13
so even if i i'm sure you proved after proofs you won't believe unless the holy spirit
40:19
himself um changes the disposition of the disposition of your heart to receive these as good news it is the spirit of
40:26
god who does it so our job is to present the material accurately
40:32
and and and to try and be as concise as possible and that's what the writer is doing here as he presents arguments
40:38
after argument through scriptures to show that this is the truth so if you
40:43
look at it and the spirit of god speaks to you i'm happy and i'm and i hope that that that happens to you if you're
40:50
watching this all right have a wonderful day and i'll see you next monday thank
