hello good morning this is Taibbi art is
0:02
calm and today we're gonna pick up our
0:04
study on the book of Exodus we started
0:07
off on chapter one and we talked about
0:09
verse 1 through 7 and we mentioned on
0:11
the big migration how Jacob and all his
0:15
sons seventy to get seventy all together
0:18
they moved from the land of Canaan and
0:20
they went to Egypt and to live in a land
0:22
of Goshen so we talked about why they
0:25
moved because there was a famine so
0:27
everyone needed food and Joseph was
0:30
prime minister so he called for his
0:32
brothers and his entire family and he
0:34
moved into the land of goshen so while
0:37
they were living in Goshen they had
0:38
children and the original generation all
0:40
died off so Joseph died all his brothers
0:43
died his dad died and all the initial
0:45
and original generation died but they
0:47
had children because as told
0:50
to Adam and Eve God told Adam and Eve
0:52
multiply in the landing increase so the
0:55
Jews kept demanded so they kept on
0:58
multiplying in the increase in the land
1:00
and and then in Genesis 15 we talked
1:02
about how and died at hole Abraham your
1:06
descendants are gonna be in a land not
1:07
theirs for 400 years and they're gonna
1:09
be afflicted and we talked about how in
1:12
spite of their affliction the people of
1:14
Israel still thrived they were still
1:17
multiplying they were still increasing
1:18
because they remembered there are the
1:20
promises of God and that kept him
1:22
grounded but then sometimes even if and
1:26
even though God is still with you
1:29
trouble can amplify and that's what
1:31
happened and that's what we're gonna
1:33
pick up today we were gonna talk about
1:34
verse 8 and 10 because there's a new
1:37
president a new king that comes to power
1:41
and he knows nothing but Joseph I mean
1:45
he does nobody Joseph what I don't think
1:46
he cares at all and that's what we're
1:48
gonna pick up today okay let me read the
1:50
verse and we're gonna get into
1:51
understanding the details around it so
1:54
this is Exodus 1 verse 8 to 10 now
1:57
scripture says now there are rows a new
2:00
king over Egypt who did not know Joseph
2:03
and he said to his people behold the
2:08
people of Israel are too many and too
2:10
mighty for us come
2:13
let us deal shrewdly with them lest they
2:16
multiply and if war breaks out they join
2:19
our enemies and fight against us and
2:22
escape from the land now this is not
2:25
good news for the people of Israel
2:27
because here comes his king who
2:29
basically cares nothing about what
2:33
Joseph had done and Joseph did for the
2:35
land of Egypt and he comes in and he
2:37
says look we need to come up with a plan
2:39
to get rid of these people to try to
2:41
exploit them and this is what we're
2:43
gonna be analyzing today so let's go to
2:45
my slide and we're gonna read a couple
2:49
of things here so again I say in verse
2:52
eight this is what we are told this new
2:54
president or King he might have heard
2:57
about Joseph but he's a fraction to what
3:00
shows of anything that Joseph had done
3:02
was as good as dead
3:03
he did not care so in the sense that he
3:06
didn't care a bit about Joseph's
3:08
achievement
3:09
he showed contempt toward Joseph and his
3:13
kindness toward Egypt like he didn't
3:15
care about the fact that Joseph had done
3:17
so much for the land of Egypt he did not
3:19
care because Joseph had literally like
3:21
saved the entire land what that meant
3:24
absolutely nothing to this new president
3:27
and that's probably because many years
3:30
had passed and maybe Joseph's exploit
3:32
and Joseph's achievement were not passed
3:35
down from generations to generations
3:37
things tend to die down as years go by
3:41
like the guy goes well I heard but is
3:44
Joseph's okay that's 400 years ago I
3:45
don't care like this is kind of the
3:47
attitude that he had this new president
3:49
he heard about yourself and how Joseph
3:51
had done all these things but to him he
3:53
meant absolutely nothing he was like
3:56
zero I don't care what yourself are done
3:58
I heard about his Joseph look give me a
4:01
break that's kind of like how he
4:02
approached this new situation so first
4:05
let's read about what Joseph did in the
4:08
land of Egypt for the Egyptians and all
4:10
the people all together so let's let's
4:12
find that out we're gonna read on
4:13
Genesis 47 and we're gonna read like a
4:16
couple of key things here like in
4:18
Genesis 47 from verse 13 to 26 this is
4:22
what we are told now there was no food
4:25
in all the land
4:26
that's the land of Egypt
4:27
for the famine was very severe so that
4:30
the land of Egypt and the land of Canaan
4:32
languished by reason of the famine and
4:35
Joseph gathered up all the money that
4:38
was found in the land of Egypt and in
4:40
the land of Canaan in exchange for the
4:42
grain that they bought and Joseph
4:45
brought the money into Pharaoh's house
4:47
and when the money was all spent in the
4:50
land of Egypt in the land of Canaan all
4:52
the Egyptians came to Joseph and said
4:54
give us food why should we die before
4:58
your eyes for our money's gone and
5:00
Joseph Ezard gives your livestock and
5:03
I'll give you food in exchange for your
5:05
livestock if your money is gone so they
5:08
brought their livestock to Joseph and
5:10
Joseph give them food in exchange for
5:12
the horses the flocks and herds and the
5:14
donkeys he supplied them with food in
5:17
exchange for all their livestock that
5:19
year and when the idea was ended they
5:22
came to him the following year and said
5:23
to him we will not hide from our Lord
5:25
that our money is all spent the herds of
5:28
livestock are my Lords there is nothing
5:31
left in the sight of my lord but our
5:33
bodies in our land why should we die
5:35
before your eyes both we and our land
5:38
bias bias and our land for food and we
5:42
if our land will be servants to Pharaoh
5:45
and give us seed that we may live and
5:48
not die and that the land may not be
5:50
desolate so Joseph bought all the land
5:53
for of Egypt for Pharaoh for all the
5:56
Egyptians sold their fields because the
5:58
famine was severe on them the land
6:01
became pharaoh's as for the people he
6:03
made servants of them from one end of
6:05
Egypt to the other only the land of the
6:08
priests he did not buy for the priests
6:10
had fixed allowance from Pharaoh and
6:12
lived on the allowance that Pharaoh gave
6:15
them therefore they did not sell their
6:17
land then Joseph said to the people
6:20
behold I have this day brought you and
6:23
your land for Pharaoh now he a seed for
6:26
you and you shall sow the land and at
6:29
the harvest you shall give a faith to
6:31
Pharaoh and four-fifths shall be your
6:33
own a seed for the field and as food for
6:35
yourself and your household and as food
6:38
for your little ones
6:39
and they said you have saved our lives
6:45
meet please my lord we will be servants
6:48
to Pharaoh
6:49
so Joseph made it they started concern
6:51
in the land of Egypt and he stands to
6:54
this day that Pharaoh shall have the
6:56
faith the land of the priests alone did
6:58
not become Pharaoh's now you can see
7:01
from here what Joseph's are done like
7:03
this guy was one of the greatest
7:04
administrator to live in the land of
7:07
Egypt he organized the land and while
7:09
everybody else was lacking in food he
7:12
preserved a land from total destruction
7:14
and as people came he provided them with
7:17
food
7:18
he gave them what they needed in
7:19
exchange for their money their lands and
7:21
all that he gave to Pharaoh so basically
7:24
he saved Pharaoh's kingdom by giving him
7:26
everything so Pharaoh became even more
7:28
powerful than he was before
7:30
so Joseph Dunn did all this and guess
7:34
what
7:34
let's go back to the slide what do we
7:37
find out this King the new King cares
7:40
nothing about what Joseph had done for
7:44
him like he doesn't understand her if
7:46
you have what you have today is because
7:48
of what Joseph had done and that meant
7:52
little to nothing to this new king well
7:56
now we need to ask ourself a question
7:58
what was the new king fearing so much
8:00
and verse 10 gives us the answer here's
8:04
the thing like he liked the blessings
8:06
the Israelite were giving him but he
8:08
didn't like the favour they were under
8:10
he understood look these people are here
8:13
and they are serving us so I like that
8:15
but I don't like this whole joseph's
8:18
thing like just because joseph did all
8:20
this i don't want them to get this favor
8:21
you understand us so he began to get
8:24
really annoyed he liked the benefit they
8:26
were given but he didn't like the fact
8:28
that they had a favor like Joseph's name
8:30
was attached to everything you didn't
8:31
like that you liked what they were doing
8:34
to him and do for him but he didn't like
8:36
the fact that Joseph was attached to
8:39
this thing so he also what was the thing
8:43
that he was feeling that the Israel like
8:44
they lived in the land of caution but
8:47
they were increasing in numbers and he
8:49
calls the new king a lot of fears you
8:51
have these people that you are basically
8:52
like
8:53
they are like your servants where they
8:55
are increasing in number so he's always
8:56
thinking there might be an insurrection
8:58
someday there might be a revolt
8:59
there might be something so he's always
9:01
thinking we need to monitor these people
9:02
we need to find a way to keep them under
9:04
control so this is his fear
9:06
so his fear was that he will they will
9:09
eventually like leave the land and what
9:12
will become of all the benefits they
9:14
provided so his fear was like look these
9:16
people are helping me here I like what
9:18
they are doing but they are increasing
9:19
in numbers and I don't like that we need
9:22
to keep that number under control we
9:24
need to kind of press them down yes they
9:26
are increasing yes they are doing all
9:28
this for us but I'm fearing the fact
9:30
that one day if we have somebody that
9:32
war against us they might join our
9:34
enemies and leave the lane so I don't
9:36
like that so I have to find a plan to
9:38
control their minds to oppress them to
9:40
keep them under my thumb and this is why
9:43
he was thinking okay so he was fearing
9:46
those those things so let's go to verse
9:48
9 and 10 so we need to find out where
9:51
the Jews were living and why is that
9:53
important for us to understand let me
9:55
move my thing here now Joseph
9:58
strategically placed the Israelite in
10:00
the land of goshen to prevent them from
10:03
being abused by the Egyptians since they
10:05
hated a shepherd like if you'll read in
10:07
Genesis 46 31 to 34
10:10
we are told something let's read that
10:13
then Joseph said to his brother sent to
10:15
his father's household I will go up and
10:18
speak to Pharaoh and I will say to him
10:19
my brothers and my father's household
10:21
who were living in the land of Canaan
10:23
have come to me the man our Shepherd
10:26
they stained livestock and they have
10:29
brought along their flocks and herds and
10:31
everything they owned when Pharaoh calls
10:34
me in and asks what is your occupation
10:37
you should answer your servants have
10:40
tended livestock from our boyhood on
10:44
just as our fathers did then you'll be
10:47
allowed to settle in the region of
10:49
Goshen for all Shepherds are detestable
10:52
to the Egyptians so basically the
10:54
Egyptians they look down on Shepherd I
10:56
thought they were less than there are
10:59
less than anything they dig basically
11:01
thought shepherd were disgusting that
11:04
they couldn't mingle with it with a
11:05
shepherd so
11:07
Joseph said look I don't want you guys
11:09
to suffer this kind of abuse because I
11:12
know how mental abuse and physical abuse
11:14
and this kind of stuff can weigh down on
11:16
you so I'm gonna preserve you and I'm
11:18
gonna make you I'm gonna allow you to
11:19
live in a land of goshen so Joseph
11:21
wasn't being he was being strategic he
11:24
understood look if I left if I leave in
11:26
our Lama people my brothers the Israel
11:30
to live with Egyptian they're gonna be
11:31
so mistreated Dada I don't want that so
11:35
I'm gonna allow them to leave the land
11:36
of goshen so they can pan out that's not
11:39
the only reason there's also one other
11:42
thing like Egyptian believed in many
11:43
gods
11:45
so Joseph is thinking if I'll let these
11:49
people mingle with this Egyptians
11:50
they're gonna get polluted because
11:52
they're gonna start to mingle and there
11:54
they are religion and and what they
11:56
believe is gonna start to spread within
11:58
my people and I don't want that I want
12:00
to preserve the integrity of that they
12:03
are love for Yahweh so Joseph understood
12:06
that there could be repercussions so he
12:07
said to to to to Pharaoh will you allow
12:10
my people to live in the land of caution
12:11
they are Shepherd and I know you
12:13
Egyptians don't like Shepherds so please
12:14
just let them live here for the sake of
12:16
preserving my people from being abused
12:18
but also I'm thinking for the sake of
12:20
preserving them from embrace and all
12:23
these other gods so you understand he
12:25
had like spiritual implications because
12:27
Joseph was smart enough to understand
12:29
that if our loudest people because if I
12:33
allowed him to leave with the Egyptian
12:34
there might be idolatry and Joseph
12:38
wasn't gonna allow that to happen so he
12:40
said let my people live in the land of
12:42
cush and yes they can come in in a
12:44
minger with you but they're gonna go
12:45
back to where they belong and this is
12:47
their the mindset of Joseph behind all
12:50
that let's go to the to the next
12:52
actually this is the last life so
12:54
basically we understand what is going on
12:55
in this case here the new king cares
12:59
nothing about yourself he wants the
13:02
benefit that he gets from the people of
13:04
Israel but he doesn't like them and it
13:08
sounds like you can you can think of it
13:09
and stretch it a little more like you
13:11
think about slavery the slaves were
13:14
taken from like African countries and
13:16
they were taken against their will
13:17
to another land right
13:20
now the oppressor who's the master loved
13:25
the fact that his slave is working for
13:26
them by the same time he's trying to
13:28
oppress them keep them from panning out
13:30
like the slaves were like the the
13:33
Israelite where were expanding he didn't
13:34
like that he liked the benefit they
13:36
provided but he didn't like the fact
13:38
that they were expanding because that
13:39
was fear like if these people are
13:41
getting bigger and bigger and we are
13:44
flicking them with all his works
13:45
chances are someday they're gonna revolt
13:48
and he did not like that so he tried to
13:50
find ways to oppress them and this is
13:52
what we're gonna look at on the next on
13:54
our next session
13:55
what plains Pharaoh comes up with and
13:58
how evil he was so we're gonna learn
14:00
about that in the next session but for
14:03
now we understand that God's hand were
14:05
still on the people of Israel because in
14:07
spite of their affliction that they were
14:09
under they were still growing and as a
14:11
result Pharaoh got scared and he devised
14:14
a devious plan and that's what we're
14:16
gonna look to next week so I invite you
14:19
to to look forward to that okay thank
14:22
you again and have a wonderful day
