Welcome back to our study of the book of Exodus. We finished chapter 1 last week. We talked about the steady increase of the people of Israel in the land of Goshen. We talked about the new king of Egypt to whom the name Joseph meant nothing. We talked about his devious plans against the Israelites, the oppression, the mistreatment, and finally the mandate to kill all the newborn male Hebrew babies by casting them in the Nile. We also mentioned that God in Genesis 15 had foretold Abraham that the people of Israel were going to be afflicted for 400 years. God also promised that HE was going to deliver them from the land of their affliction. This is where we left off and now we’ll begin with chapter 2 today ( we’ll focus on v1-10).

hello on this is ty eva ty is calm and
0:03
welcome back to our study on the book of
0:05
Exodus we talked about chapter one in
0:09
the last couple of weeks and today we're
0:11
gonna talk about - - so let me give you
0:13
a quick introduction before we get into
0:15
the gist after our topic we finished
0:19
like I said chapter one last week
0:21
and we talked about a steady increase of
0:23
the people of Israel in the land of
0:25
goshen we talked about the new king of
0:27
Egypt to whom the name Joseph meant
0:31
nothing and we talked about his devious
0:34
plains against the Israelites we talked
0:36
about the oppression the mistreatment
0:38
and then finally we talked about the
0:40
mandate that he gave to kill all the
0:42
newborn male Hebrew babies by casting
0:45
them into the Nile River we also
0:48
mentioned that God in Genesis 15 had
0:51
foretold Abraham that the people of
0:54
Israel were going to be afflicted for
0:56
400 years and God also promised that he
1:00
was going to deliver them from the land
1:01
of the affliction and this is where we
1:04
left off and now we're gonna begin with
1:06
chapter 2 today so the first thing we're
1:09
gonna do is we're gonna read chapter 2
1:11
and then we're gonna try to dissect it
1:14
okay so let's do that let me go up -
1:17
yeah I'm reading after ESV so I'm gonna
1:22
start here the title is the birth of
1:24
Moses now a man from the house of Levi
1:28
went and took as his wife Haley right
1:32
woman the woman conceived and bore his
1:35
son and when she saw that he was a fine
1:37
child she hit him three months when she
1:40
could hide him no longer when she could
1:42
hide him no longer she took for him a
1:45
basket made of bulrushes and daubed it
1:48
with bitumen and pitch she put the child
1:51
in it and placed it among the reeds by
1:53
the riverbank and his sister stood at a
1:56
distance to know what will be done to
1:58
the him now the daughter of Pharaoh came
2:01
down to bathe at the river while her
2:03
young woman walked beside the river she
2:06
saw the basket among the reeds and sent
2:08
her servant woman and she took it when
2:10
she opened it she saw the child and
2:12
behold
2:13
the baby was crying she took pity on him
2:16
and said this is one of the Hebrews
2:18
children then his sister said to
2:21
Pharaoh's daughter shall I go and call
2:23
you a nurse from the Hebrew women to
2:25
nurse the child for you and Pharaoh's
2:27
daughter said to her go so the girl went
2:31
and called the child's mother and
2:33
Pharaoh's daughter said to her take this
2:35
child away and nursing for me and I will
2:37
give you your wages so the woman took
2:40
the child and nursed him when the child
2:42
grew older she brought him to Pharaoh's
2:44
daughter and he became her son she named
2:47
him Moses because she said I drew him
2:50
out of the water so we just read their
2:54
unvarnished Word of God and we just
2:56
heard and read and I count that is
2:59
historical he actually happened it's not
3:02
just a story it's an account that was
3:04
recorded for our sake to learn from it
3:07
so now we're gonna go and we're gonna
3:08
try to dissect this a little bit now the
3:12
birth and background of Moses you all
3:15
know that Pharaoh had commanded his
3:17
people to cast every Hebrew male infant
3:20
into the Nile so alas just for a moment
3:23
like think about Pharaoh evil plan like
3:25
let's think about it for a second
3:27
he was trying to control and repress the
3:30
growth of the Hebrew population by
3:32
killing all the males we talked about
3:34
that he was also trying to force the
3:36
Hebrews to abstain from intimate
3:38
relationships he was literally trying to
3:42
disrupt the integrity of the family I'm
3:44
sure he eat like he had his task masters
3:48
monitor every pregnant woman that was
3:51
Hebrew and you can imagine the type of
3:53
pressure they were subjected to like
3:56
they were under so his honor these
3:58
conditions that Moses is born like think
4:00
about all the background oppression fear
4:04
mind-controlled fear and then you have a
4:07
baby and you know that your baby that's
4:10
born is a boy so you have scared to
4:13
death and this is the kind of condition
4:15
Moses was Moses was mother and father
4:18
were under so he's born in this hellish
4:21
world okay so we're gonna read verse 1
4:24
to 2 and if you're gonna unpack that a
4:26
little bit
4:27
now a man from the house of Levi when it
4:29
took and took a wife a Levite woman the
4:33
woman conceived and bore a son and when
4:34
she saw that he was a fine child she hit
4:37
him three months so Moses was a Levite
4:40
as indicated in verse one
4:42
both his mother and father were born
4:44
from the tribe of Levi they were from
4:46
the tribe of Levi that would be
4:48
important in the next chapters that were
4:50
gonna be looking at so remember his
4:52
background so the next phrase that
4:55
caught my attention in this verses was
4:57
he was a fine child now what exactly
5:00
does the author of Scripture mean when
5:03
he says Moses was a fine child does that
5:06
mean that his mother decided to keep him
5:08
because he was a good-looking baby
5:09
he was beautiful baby that could be the
5:12
case but if you read in acts 7 Stephen
5:15
the first martyr gives us an insight
5:18
into what it really meant in acts 7
5:21
verse 20 we are told at this time Moses
5:24
was born and he was a beautiful
5:27
he was beautiful in God's sight so
5:29
Stephen knows his history if you go back
5:32
to the book of Acts he recounted the
5:34
history of the people of Israel and they
5:36
are they are the Andy and Ikes them and
5:38
that's when they pick up rocks on the
5:41
kill him but in the knees like this
5:43
course he says in verse 20 at this time
5:47
Moses was born and he was beautiful in
5:49
God's sight so I interpret the phrase
5:53
fine child to mean that God had already
5:56
set apart Moses from birth and his
5:59
mother knew that he had been set apart
6:01
because he said the scripture says he
6:03
was beautiful in God's sight I mean God
6:06
had favor on him now that doesn't take
6:10
away the fact that he could have any
6:11
beautiful baby a good-looking baby and
6:13
if you look at Hebrews 11 23 let's read
6:17
a couple of things here I'm gonna
6:20
actually we don't need to read that now
6:22
let's go on so you understand like this
6:26
is the color condition Moses is born
6:28
under right and then pressure rises in
6:32
verse 3 we read this when Moses mother
6:34
when she could hide him no longer she
6:36
took for him a basket made of bulrushes
6:38
and daubed it with
6:40
and pitch she put the child in it and
6:43
placed like a monkey read by the
6:44
riverbank and his sister stood at a
6:47
distance to know what will be done to
6:48
him
6:49
I imagine that you have a baby and
6:52
you've tried you've managed to hide him
6:55
for three months and he gets to the
6:57
point where you can't do that anymore
6:58
you do know that God has said in my
7:00
party but you don't know what to do
7:02
oftentimes as believers we are faced
7:04
with these kind of conditions where we
7:05
just don't know we know that God is in
7:07
control we know that is a plan but we
7:09
don't know what it is so at this moment
7:11
Moses as mom doesn't know what to do
7:13
with Moses so she was able to hide him
7:16
for three months but I believe the task
7:17
masters were probably asking her a lot
7:20
of questions about the outcome of her
7:22
pregnancy maybe they were asking her
7:24
where is the baby what happened to your
7:26
baby because you no longer pregnant what
7:28
is the baby and maybe she told him that
7:30
her baby was dead
7:31
who knows what happened we don't know we
7:33
just speculatin all we know is that she
7:36
could no longer conceal the baby so she
7:39
was literally forced to expose the baby
7:41
to the elements but she built a
7:43
waterproof basket to keep him from
7:46
drowning because she dubbed it with
7:48
bitumen and pitch which have they have
7:50
like waterproof abilities and and this
7:52
is this is why she did that
7:54
he took something a flotation device and
7:57
then she she doped it with like bitumen
8:00
and pitch to keep him from drowning and
8:02
then she put him among the reeds by the
8:04
riverbank again to keep him stable there
8:07
so she preserves his life from the
8:09
elements but he wouldn't survive long if
8:12
let that too long if left there too long
8:14
meaning he can do all that but if nobody
8:17
comes and picks him up at some point
8:19
he's gonna die off maybe thirst hunger
8:21
he's the three-month-old baby can you
8:24
imagine putting your baby in a basket
8:26
and just live him like that put him out
8:29
there in the elements I mean I can't
8:32
even conceive that in my mind this is
8:34
just unbearable you know I just want you
8:37
to pause and think about it like this
8:40
verse like raised on top of question in
8:42
my mind like did she know that the Lord
8:44
was going to preserve the baby since he
8:45
was a fine child we learned that we
8:48
learned that Moses was fine in the eyes
8:50
of God now did she act by faith
8:54
scripture says that if it is God who
8:56
works in us both to will and act
8:57
according to his good purpose in
8:59
Philippians 2:13 scripture also says
9:01
that without faith it's impossible to
9:04
please God now see bruise 11:6 and in
9:07
Romans 10:17 we are told faith comes by
9:11
hearing and hearing by the Word of God
9:12
so my question is did Moses mom go out
9:15
there and put him out because she was
9:18
led by the Spirit of God himself we
9:22
don't know but I know that she did it
9:24
okay so I believe her theology was right
9:27
I believe she was led by the Spirit of
9:29
God since she knew from birth that he
9:31
was set apart for God and you can see
9:34
that by the way she did everything she
9:36
could to preserve the life of the baby
9:38
she didn't just like toss them out in
9:40
the Nile now she didn't do that she put
9:42
him in this bulrush dog with like
9:47
bitumen and pitch and she also I don't
9:50
know if she sent his sister Miriam to
9:52
stand at the distance to see what would
9:54
be done to him but the sister went maybe
9:56
the mom just couldn't take it she just
9:58
couldn't bear to see that happen
9:59
so she did everything she could to
10:02
preserve the baby's life but that you
10:05
know and I think she she she acted out
10:07
of faith I think she says she believed
10:09
that maybe the Lord was gonna preserve
10:10
Moses's life because she knew that he
10:13
had been set apart that does not he
10:15
raised the anguish in her heart like
10:17
that that doesn't mean that she was just
10:19
like yes let me go and do this I'm just
10:20
prove myself to God no I'm sure there
10:22
was fear
10:23
there was Willie survived all the
10:26
questions faith does not completely
10:29
raise the fact that we don't know
10:32
sometimes but we believe that God is
10:34
working you know so it doesn't get the
10:37
fear that's her humanity sure she was
10:39
told I'm sure very much fearful would he
10:41
survive did I hear from the Lord I don't
10:43
know what she was going through but all
10:45
I know is she did everything she could
10:47
to preserve his life and she was hoping
10:49
at some point some maybe someone was
10:51
gonna come and take the child and
10:52
preserve his life that's what his sister
10:54
went to see what will be done to Moses
10:56
so she didn't just put him over and say
10:58
I don't care I'm just gonna let this
10:59
baby die she did everything she could to
11:01
preserve his life okay let's keep that
11:04
in mind now let's go up to the next
11:08
God's sovereignty and this is the next
11:11
thing we're gonna read and his verses
11:13
now scripture says now the daughter of
11:15
Pharaoh came down to bathe at the river
11:17
while her young women walked beside the
11:20
river she saw the basket among the reeds
11:22
and sent her servant woman and she took
11:24
it when she opened it she saw the child
11:27
and behold the baby was crying she took
11:31
pity on him and said this is one of the
11:33
Hebrews children then his sister said to
11:36
Pharaoh's daughter shall I go and call
11:38
you a nurse from the Hebrew women to
11:40
nurse the child for you and Pharaoh's
11:42
daughter said to her go so the girl went
11:44
and called the child's mother and
11:46
Pharaoh's daughter said to her take this
11:49
child away and nurse him for me and I
11:51
will give you your wages so the woman
11:53
took the child and nursed him when the
11:55
child grew older she brought him to
11:56
Pharaoh's daughter and he became her son
11:59
she named him Moses because she said I
12:02
drew him out of the water now
12:04
interestingly it so happened that the
12:07
day Moses's mother decides to put the
12:10
child away is the day Pharaoh's daughter
12:13
decides to go bathe at the river now
12:17
most people call this chance or
12:19
coincidence but this is a demonstration
12:21
of God's providence and sovereignty now
12:25
the Lord moves Pharaoh's daughter's
12:27
heart
12:27
she takes pity on the child and decides
12:31
to adopt him now this is incredible like
12:34
I said I wrote like what really captured
12:36
my attention here is that Moses mother
12:39
receives a child back and now she's
12:42
under the protection of Pharaoh's
12:45
daughter who commands her to nurse the
12:49
child and on top of that she gets paid
12:51
to nurse her own child how incredible is
12:55
this this reminds me of the account of
12:58
Abraham and Isaac Abraham did not
13:00
withhold Isaac from the Lord and he
13:02
received him back in the same way
13:04
Moses's mother knew that the Lord had
13:06
set him apart since birth and she was
13:08
willing to give him to God
13:10
wholeheartedly she entrusted Moses to
13:13
God and was recompense for her faith
13:15
because she received Moses is back and
13:17
she got even paid to take care of her
13:19
own child
13:20
now this
13:21
this is incredible like God is sovereign
13:24
and we can entrust like everything to
13:27
him and be at peace with our decision as
13:29
long that he is the one behind it the
13:32
will of the Lord will always glorify the
13:35
Lord Himself and we see there being
13:37
repeated even in Moses case I imagine
13:40
that imagine Moses mom puts the child in
13:47
this bulrush dog with bitumen and pitch
13:51
and then she puts him out and then
13:54
Pharaoh's daughter happens to come there
13:56
on that day like God is sovereign he
13:59
knows all things and I'm just amazed I
14:03
just gave you my explanation on it I
14:06
want you to go back and read that
14:07
chapter and see for yourself how God is
14:10
moving in the midst of all these things
14:13
and working his plane to perfection
14:15
scripture says in Romans 8:28 we know
14:18
that all things work together for good
14:20
for those who love God and I've been
14:23
called according to his purpose Moses
14:25
had been called by God himself since
14:28
birth so God was going to preserve his
14:30
life and Moses mom was learning a
14:33
valuable lesson about God's sovereignty
14:36
and his care for his people and she saw
14:39
it happening before her eyes but he took
14:41
faith he had to put the child out and
14:44
she utter trust God that God was going
14:46
to preserve his life it's not easy now
14:48
faith comes by hearing and hearing by
14:50
the Word of God see she did not just go
14:53
out and just threw him out there like
14:54
that I believe the Holy Spirit was
14:56
leading her in this okay so we have to
15:00
be careful to be able to be willing to
15:02
listen to the voice of the Lord and to
15:03
recognize when God is working and Moses
15:06
his mom exudes a lot of that and I'm
15:09
sure they were still fear in the same
15:11
way Abraham had the same thing with
15:14
Isaac I know that as he was going to
15:17
sacrifice Isaac he had all kind of
15:20
question did I hear from the Lord but he
15:21
trusted because he had been walking with
15:23
God for a long time so he was able to
15:25
recognize God's voice in the same way
15:27
Moses as mom was able to do so and Moses
15:31
was reserved and he grew up
15:34
as Pharaoh's own daughter imagine that
15:37
and we're gonna learn why the Lord was
15:40
preserving Moses because God himself had
15:43
a plane and God's will will be done and
15:46
he was working out all things for for
15:49
the accomplishments of his own purpose
15:52
so I want you to sit on it and just go
15:54
back and read that story again and I'll
15:56
see you next time thank you for for
15:58
being here with me today okay right
