The writer is setting the stage for three exhortations. We learned in the previous verses that God was pleased with Jesus’ sacrifice and there was evidence about this in Jeremiah 31:31-34 where the Holy Spirit reassures the worshiper about his/her right standing before God by the process of sanctification, in which He ( the Spirit of God) enables him/her to obey the laws of God. Moreover the same Scripture also informs the believer that He is forgiven and needs no longer to offer any more sacrifices for sins. Because of all this, the writer says that now the worshiper has confidence to enter into the Holy Of Holies. We need to understand what this news sounded like for the readers. Access to the Holy Of Holies was prohibited to all but the High Priest. And even the High Priest was only allowed in there once a year. And He never entered with confidence, because He had to go in with the blood of calves and goats and follow very strict instructions, or else he could be struck dead. That was a terrifying experience, the High Priest was never confident whenever he was getting ready to go through the veil that separated the Holy Place from the Holy of Holies. But when Jesus breathed His last on the cross and said it is finished, the veil was torn from top to bottom, and access to the Holy Of Holies was now open to all who put their trust in Him. The worshiper is now allowed in that secret place only through the body of Christ. And this is a living way, that isn’t going to fade or ever die out. And Christ is our great High Priest who intercedes for us. Just think about the people received those words.

hello and um welcome back to our study
0:03
of the book of
0:05
um hebrews we started chapter 10 and we
0:08
are going slow slowly through it and
0:10
we're gonna finish we're actually not
0:12
gonna finish it today we're just gonna
0:14
look at verses 19 19-25
0:16
but before i start i just want to give
0:18
you a quick recap our last
0:20
study that we did we talked about christ
0:23
sacrifice not being needed to be
0:25
repeated because he died once and for
0:28
all and that satisfied the wrath of god
0:31
and he paid the penalty for our sins and
0:33
for the sins of those that god has
0:35
chosen and again we talked about the
0:37
worth of the sacrifice of christ all he
0:40
had to do is one time and that satisfied
0:42
everything now the writer is comparing
0:45
that and contrasting that to the
0:46
sacrificial system that had been around
0:49
for a thousand more than a thousand
0:51
years where the jewish people
0:53
continuously did that they offered
0:56
the blood of calves and goats and then
0:58
what the writer was shown was that that
1:00
did not take away sins because the blood
1:03
of bulls and goats cannot take away sins
1:05
but when christ died once and for all he
1:08
achieved what thousands of years of
1:10
sacrificial system couldn't do and then
1:13
as a result we also had the internal
1:16
weakness of the holy spirit because when
1:19
when um the writer recalled jeremiah 31
1:22
one of the benefit of jesus sacrifice on
1:25
the cross was the fact that god was not
1:26
going to put his spirit in the people's
1:29
heart and as a result the people now are
1:32
going to be able to
1:34
obey obey the word of god
1:36
as a result of the holy spirit coming
1:38
that's an internal witness because now
1:40
the spirit of god enables and the
1:42
believer to not love the word of god to
1:45
love doing the things of god so the same
1:47
the sanctification process was part of
1:50
the evidence that indeed uh now it was a
1:53
new covenant and that new covenant was
1:55
inaugurated by jesus christ so he gives
1:58
all his proofs and then he begins um
2:01
verses 19 to 25 by giving three
2:03
exaltations and that's what we're going
2:05
to look at today again
2:07
let's recall the background to this
2:08
letter he's talking to jewish believers
2:10
that are undergoing persecution and
2:13
their temptation was that they wanted to
2:15
go back to the old sacrificial system
2:17
because it was something that was
2:18
tangible they could see it they could
2:20
feel it and that again would serve as a
2:23
way to for them to avoid the persecution
2:25
but he's telling them don't do that
2:27
because the old system can do nothing
2:30
for you so we've been talking about
2:32
since the beginning and in verses 19 to
2:34
25 is going to talk about the full
2:36
assurance of faith so what i'm gonna do
2:39
is i'm going to read the verse
2:41
and then we are going to dissect it all
2:43
right so let's go to hebrews chapter 10
2:45
we're going to read verses 19 to 25 now
2:48
the scripture says therefore brothers
2:51
since we have confidence to enter the
2:54
holy places by the blood of jesus
2:57
by the new and living way that he opened
3:00
for us through the curtain that is
3:02
through his flesh and since we have a
3:04
great priest over the house of god let
3:07
us draw near
3:09
with a true heart
3:11
with true heart in full assurance of
3:14
faith
3:14
with our hearts sprinkled clean from an
3:17
evil conscience and our bodies our
3:20
bodies washed with pure water
3:22
let us hold fast the confession of our
3:24
hope without wavering for he who
3:27
promised is faithful and let us consider
3:30
how to stir up one another to love and
3:34
good works not neglecting to meet
3:37
together as is the habit of some but
3:40
encouraging one another and all the more
3:43
as you see the day drawing near again
3:47
this is the word of god
3:49
receive it as such
3:50
so now we're going to go to
3:52
talk about verses 19 to 21. basically he
3:55
says that therefore brothers since we
3:58
have confidence to enter the holy places
4:00
by the blood of jesus
4:02
by the new and living way that he opened
4:04
for us through the curtain that is
4:05
through his flesh and since we have a
4:07
great high priest over the house of god
4:10
and i'm gonna stop there and i'm gonna
4:11
talk about the exhortation so basically
4:14
he setting the stage for three
4:17
exaltations and we learned in the
4:19
previous verses verses 11 through 18
4:21
that god was pleased with jesus
4:24
sacrifice and there was evidence about
4:26
this in jeremiah 31 verse 31 to 34
4:30
where the holy spirit reassures the
4:31
worshiper about his rights standing
4:34
before god by the process of what
4:36
sanctification in which the spirit of
4:39
god himself enables the the believer to
4:42
obey the laws of god i kind of want to
4:45
read jeremiah 31 31 to 34 real quick
4:48
before we get into explaining this
4:50
listen to the scripture
4:52
the new covenant
4:54
behold
4:55
the days are coming declares the lord
4:58
when i will make a new covenant with the
5:01
house of israel and the house of judah
5:04
not like the covenant that i made with
5:06
their fathers on the day when i took
5:08
them by the hand to bring them out of
5:11
the land of egypt my covenant that they
5:14
broke though i was their husband
5:16
declares the lord
5:17
for this is the covenant that i would
5:20
make with the house of israel after
5:22
those days declares the lord
5:25
i
5:26
will put my law within them and i will
5:30
write them on their heart and i will be
5:33
their god and they shall be my people
5:37
and no longer
5:38
shall each one teach his neighbor and
5:40
each his brother saying lord o lord for
5:43
they shall all know me from the least of
5:46
them to the greatest declares the lord
5:49
for i will forgive their iniquity and
5:51
i'll remember their sin no more
5:54
now i just want to make a quick comment
5:56
here you know a lot of people talk about
5:57
how uh we are no longer under the law
6:00
and now we are under grace yes we are
6:03
under grace but now the spirit of god
6:05
enables us to obey the law of god see we
6:08
couldn't earn our way to god by obeying
6:11
the laws but now with the spirit of god
6:13
living in a believer the believer longs
6:16
to do the things of god the believer
6:18
loves the law of god because the spirit
6:20
of god loves the law of god so there's
6:22
no such thing as a believer that does
6:24
not love the law because the the
6:26
believer now
6:28
wants to do the will of god by obeying
6:30
the law of god so yes we are no longer
6:32
under the law in the sense that we no
6:34
longer keep the law in order to
6:37
enter into heaven because no one could
6:39
do it anyway because the law brought
6:41
what damnation but now under the spirit
6:44
of god we are now empowered to love the
6:47
things of god so that's what the
6:49
scripture says wherever there is such
6:51
things such as the fruit of the spirit
6:53
there's no longer any need for the law
6:55
because the spirit of god loves the law
6:57
of god that's what that means so
7:00
you can be a believer and live in sin
7:02
and say well i'm no longer under the law
7:04
i'm under grace that's not what this
7:05
means because the spirit of god loves
7:08
the law of god i just want to make that
7:10
clear
7:11
now let's continue so basically
7:13
uh the same scripture also informs the
7:16
believer that he is forgiven and needs
7:18
no longer to offer any more sacrifices
7:21
for sins because jesus dealt with it
7:24
right now because of all these the
7:26
writer says that now the worshiper has
7:29
confidence to do what to enter into the
7:32
holy of holies and we need to understand
7:34
what this news sounded like for the
7:37
readers see access to the holy of holies
7:39
was prohibited
7:41
to all but the high priest and even the
7:43
high priest was only allowed in the holy
7:46
of lord holies once a year
7:49
and he
7:49
never entered that place with confidence
7:51
okay because he had to go in with the
7:54
blood of what carlston got and follow
7:56
very strict instructions or else he
8:00
could be struck dead and that happened
8:02
to some
8:03
right so that was a terrifying
8:04
experience and the high priest was never
8:07
confident whenever he was getting ready
8:08
to go through the veil that separated
8:11
the holy place from the holy of holies
8:14
but when jesus breathed his last on the
8:16
cross and said it is finished the veil
8:18
was torn from what from top to bottom
8:21
shown that god is the one that actually
8:23
tore the veil and now access to the holy
8:26
of holies was now open to all
8:29
who put their trust in jesus christ so
8:32
the worshipers now allowed into that
8:34
secret place only through the body of
8:37
christ okay and this is a living way
8:39
that is not going to fade or that's
8:41
never going to die out and christ is our
8:44
great high priest who enters seeds for
8:47
us
8:48
now just think about how those people
8:49
receive those words like this was like
8:53
but this is the reality of the new
8:56
covenant and now he's going to talk
8:58
about the
8:59
the the exhortation now in verse 22 he
9:02
starts with the first one listen to what
9:04
he says here let us do what draw near
9:08
with a true heart in full assurance of
9:09
faith with our hearts sprinkled clean
9:12
from an evil conscience and our bodies
9:15
washed with pure water
9:17
so what's the observation here see this
9:19
is the first of the three exaltations
9:22
that the writer gives to his readers
9:23
right so based on what was said in the
9:26
previous verses it is evident that under
9:29
the new covenant the worshiper has
9:31
access into the holy of holies
9:34
into the tabernacle
9:36
erected by god himself we have access
9:38
there so what i want to make clear
9:40
before tackling these verses is that the
9:43
believers right standing before god has
9:45
been settled
9:46
okay there's no longer any need to offer
9:49
any sacrifices for sins that has been
9:52
settled
9:53
once and for all by jesus that is done
9:55
no longer shall anybody offer any
9:57
sacrifices anymore that is done
10:00
but
10:01
there's a big but
10:02
that doesn't give the worshiper the
10:05
freedom to enter into fellowship with
10:08
god with a cavalier attitude
10:11
make no mistakes about that okay yes the
10:15
debt has been paid once and for about
10:17
god will still
10:19
chastise his children when they disobey
10:21
him because they've grieved him you've
10:23
grieved the holy spirit
10:25
so
10:26
entering the presence of god still
10:28
requires a pure heart and it still
10:30
requires a clean conscience which means
10:33
we must confess our sins prior to coming
10:37
boldly to the throne of grace we don't
10:39
just come in there with a cavalier
10:41
attitude and if you want to know how to
10:42
enter the presence of god let's go to
10:45
first john chapter five verse two
10:47
two uh verse five first john chapter
10:50
first john one verse five all the way to
10:52
uh chapter two verse two i wanna read
10:54
that to you listen to the scripture
10:56
let's go to first john five one
10:59
verse 5 to
11:00
chapter 2 verse 2. this is the message
11:03
we've heard from him and proclaimed to
11:06
you that god is light god is not a
11:08
finger ambiguous okay he's light in him
11:11
there is no darkness at all there is no
11:13
confusion
11:14
if you say listen if we say we have
11:16
fellowship with god
11:18
while we walk in darkness we lie and do
11:21
not practice the truth
11:23
but if we walk in the light as he's in
11:26
the light we have fellowship with one
11:28
another and the blood of jesus does what
11:31
cleanses us from all sin if we say we
11:33
have no sin we deceive ourselves and the
11:36
truth is not in us but if we confess our
11:38
sins
11:39
is what he is faithful and just to
11:41
forgive us our sins and to cleanse us
11:43
from all our righteousness if we say we
11:45
have not seen we make him a liar and his
11:48
word is no is not in us
11:50
my little children i'm writing these
11:52
things to you so that you may know what
11:54
so that you may not sin see he writes
11:57
you so that we may not sin
11:58
but he says but if anyone does sin again
12:01
this is not an attitude of like just
12:04
willful disobedience now you say if
12:06
anyone does miss the mark
12:08
we have an advocate with the father
12:10
jesus christ the righteous he is what
12:12
the propitiation for our sins and not
12:14
for ours only but also for the sins of
12:16
the whole world so john gives us the
12:18
blueprint onto how to enter
12:21
the presence of god we have to confess
12:23
our sins before we go in there we don't
12:25
go in there with a cavalier attitude yes
12:27
we are told to come to the throne of
12:29
grace with confidence but that does not
12:31
give you the right to go in there with a
12:33
cavalier attitude you come into the
12:35
throne of grace with respect with a pure
12:38
heart with a clean conscience you coming
12:40
there confessing your sins so you ask
12:42
yourself lord have i done anything today
12:46
that has not pleased you and we know
12:48
that we've done it and we confess the
12:50
lord please forgive us on the basis of
12:52
what jesus did on the cross and then you
12:55
enter into the presence of god
12:57
look at the the old testament
13:00
even when isaiah the prophet whenever
13:02
the end of the
13:03
presence of god it was utter what they
13:06
were filled
13:07
with reverence
13:09
there was fear
13:10
we can't be referent going into the
13:12
presence of god
13:15
or we will not go any further he will
13:17
not play around god does not play
13:20
when we come into his presence
13:22
irreverent we will be chastised one way
13:25
or another so we need to remember we're
13:27
going to the presence of god yes jesus
13:29
established it yes jesus opened the way
13:32
but that does not give you the right to
13:33
go in there
13:35
cover your cavalier attitude okay
13:38
so scripture also tells us that blessed
13:40
are the pure in heart for they shall see
13:42
god see why none of us can be perfectly
13:45
uh pure in heart on the side of eternity
13:47
uh attitude shall reflect a desire to
13:50
want to do what pleases god okay
13:52
this is why the sanctification process
13:54
is so vital
13:56
and in not only conforming us to the
13:58
image of christ but also to confirm our
14:00
election as true children of god you see
14:03
so born again believers long to be like
14:05
their savior because god seed remain in
14:08
them so the first exaltation is an open
14:11
invitation to come to the throne of
14:13
grace but with the right attitude in
14:16
order to have an unbroken fellowship
14:18
with god that's the first exaltation so
14:20
that our
14:21
fellowship with god is unbroken
14:24
okay
14:25
and the next thing he says is let us
14:27
hold fast the confession of our hope
14:30
without wavering for he who promised is
14:33
faithful why is that so important see we
14:36
need to understand uh why the second
14:38
exaltation is so is so vital and so
14:40
crucial see if you recall the background
14:42
to this letter the jewish believers that
14:44
the writer was addressing were being
14:46
tempted to forsake their confession of
14:48
jesus and the hope of eternal life
14:51
because of the persecution they were
14:52
under so they were tempted to give up
14:54
all of that
14:55
so in this exhortation is inviting them
14:58
to hold tight to the hope that once
15:00
confessed without wavering because god
15:02
who made the promises faithful if you go
15:05
to verse um 13 to 20 of chapter 6 let's
15:08
go there and remember what the scripture
15:10
tells us
15:12
listen to what the scripture says here
15:14
for when god made a promise to abraham
15:17
since he had no one greater by whom to
15:19
swear he swore by himself saying surely
15:23
i will bless you and multiply you and
15:25
thus abraham having patiently waited
15:28
obtained the promise abraham
15:31
for people swear by something greater
15:33
than themselves in in all their disputes
15:36
and off is the final for confirmation so
15:38
when god desired to show more
15:40
convincingly to the heirs of the
15:42
promised the unchangeable character of
15:44
his purpose he guaranteed with another
15:47
so that by two unchangeable things in
15:49
which is impossible for god to lie
15:51
we who have fled for refuge might have
15:54
strong encouragement to hold fast the
15:57
hope set before us we have this as a
16:00
sure and steadfast anchor of the soul a
16:03
hope that enters into the inner place
16:05
behind the curtain where jesus has gone
16:07
as a forerunner on our behalf having
16:10
become a high priest forever after the
16:13
order of melchizedek so basically
16:16
he's saying
16:17
not only did god make a promise he
16:19
backed it up if an oath abraham was
16:22
descendants this jewish believer believe
16:24
as well believed god and held on to his
16:26
hope okay so the writer is just
16:28
reminding them he's saying for the
16:29
second time
16:31
i'm giving you the cure against wavering
16:34
i'm giving you the cure against fear i'm
16:36
giving you the the cure against
16:38
discouragement
16:39
i'm going through discouragement right
16:41
now myself
16:42
it is hard to see god in the process
16:45
when we can't see anything
16:48
so we we believe by faith now the faith
16:50
that i'm talking about is not something
16:52
abstract believing in something
16:54
wishful thinking that's not what it is
16:56
but it's a faith that is grounded in the
17:00
word of god because the scripture tells
17:02
us faith comes by hearing and hearing by
17:04
the word of god so god gives his word
17:07
and he doesn't return to him void so he
17:09
said hold on to the hope
17:11
because god will promise is faithful
17:14
so we need to pay attention to these
17:15
words in great in times of great trials
17:18
we must fix our eyes on jesus look ahead
17:20
to the coming of christ because god is
17:22
faithful to his promise today we may not
17:24
have all what that we want
17:27
but we have everything that we need in
17:28
jesus so we look forward to the day that
17:31
we are going to be clothed with a a
17:33
perfect body we look forward to the day
17:36
where we will see
17:37
our faith will be our eyes where we will
17:39
see jesus for real
17:41
so he's telling them don't give up
17:44
hold on to these truths because they are
17:46
real god made a promise and he backed it
17:49
up even oh
17:50
so i like how this version reads in the
17:53
french version it's incredible he says
17:55
in the french version let us remain
17:57
attached
17:58
attached to this confession attached to
18:01
this confession
18:02
and i believe the idea here is that we
18:04
must be firmly established in this hope
18:06
to the point where it informs all
18:09
our decisions
18:11
do you live by faith is the question
18:14
do you trust in the word of god
18:17
it's not something that you can
18:18
manufacture
18:19
because jesus told his disciples
18:22
right he says
18:24
they say increase our faith and he tells
18:26
them if you had faith as little as a
18:28
mustard seed you can say to this
18:30
mountain move and you move basically
18:31
he's telling them you don't even have a
18:34
scentilla of faith
18:36
because it's not something that you can
18:38
produce it is produced by the word of
18:40
god because god speaks the word and we
18:43
receive it and it causes us to believe
18:45
it
18:46
so this is why
18:48
the righteous shall live by faith
18:50
because faith comes from god
18:52
so we have to desperately ask him lord
18:54
please strengthen us according to your
18:57
word
18:58
and that's why he's saying hold on to
18:59
this
19:00
by faith
19:02
and then let's go on to the last last
19:04
one here and listen to what he says and
19:07
let us consider how to start up one
19:09
another to love and good works not
19:12
neglecting to meet together as is the
19:14
habit of some but encouraging one
19:16
another and all the more as you see the
19:19
day drawing near
19:21
see the first
19:22
two exaltation
19:24
had to do with
19:25
people's relationship with god
19:28
and our confession of faith right but
19:30
the third one had to do with fellowship
19:32
with other believers see based on the
19:34
words above we can infer that some of
19:37
the believers who were waving
19:40
had stopped coming to church
19:42
they are stopped coming to the assembly
19:44
of the believers
19:45
and that was detrimental to their growth
19:48
isolation is one of the tools
19:50
satan uses to plunge believers into
19:52
doubt
19:53
he weakens the believer's work so the
19:55
writer was inviting his readers to be
19:57
active in the fellowship
19:59
first by showing up and then encouraging
20:02
each other to love and good works those
20:04
are all the byproducts of the fruit of
20:06
the spirit and the motivation he gives
20:09
for this exaltation was the second
20:10
coming of christ because christ is
20:13
coming soon he's telling them the
20:14
believers primary objective is to remain
20:17
faithful and leave
20:18
in light of the second coming
20:21
jesus says to his disciples to seek
20:22
first what the kingdom of god and his
20:24
righteousness and that's the idea that
20:26
is being communicated here see if you go
20:28
to colossians 3 verse 1 to 4 the
20:30
scripture says if then
20:33
you have been raised with christ seek
20:35
the things that are above where christ
20:37
is seated at the right hand of god set
20:40
your mind on things that are above not
20:42
on things on earth for you have died and
20:44
your real life now is hidden with christ
20:46
in god when christ loses your life
20:48
appears
20:49
then you shall also appear with him in
20:52
glory see the believers real new life
20:55
hasn't fully been disclosed yet
20:57
okay what a believer would be has not
20:59
yet been made manifest but we know that
21:02
when christ appears we shall be like him
21:04
for we shall see we shall see him as he
21:07
truly is and that shall encourage us to
21:09
to good works to love and the fellowship
21:11
so
21:12
in conclusion i will say that the first
21:14
one the first examination again is to
21:17
come correct in the throne to the throne
21:19
of grace don't come here with a cavalier
21:21
attitude and second
21:23
hold on to the confession of hope
21:25
and then don't give up meeting with
21:26
other believers that's important
21:28
especially born again
21:30
holy spirit filled believers they are
21:32
tremendously helpful
21:34
and that's what you know
21:36
in our day and age the church has been
21:37
weakened but i'm not going to be one of
21:40
those to be so
21:41
desperate because i know that there are
21:43
still good solid christian churches out
21:46
there that are teaching the word of god
21:48
and that the believers in those churches
21:50
are strong and has been strengthened
21:53
and that's what we need is we need those
21:55
that are living by the spirit of god to
21:57
be
21:58
strengthening one another there's
22:00
nothing better than having a believer
22:01
that's a strong believer that believes
22:04
in the gifts of the spirit that believes
22:06
in the word of god that believes in the
22:07
truth of the scripture
22:09
being around those people
22:11
make you stronger because you need that
22:13
we need that
22:15
we can't do this thing isolated
22:17
okay the christian life was never meant
22:19
to be lived in isolation that's the
22:21
plague of the devil he wants to isolate
22:24
you so that he can begin to seed doubts
22:26
in your mind that you begin to
22:29
wallow in the despair
22:32
my whole my family and i were sick for
22:34
like two weeks and a half now we've
22:35
covered
22:36
absolutely horrendous disease
22:39
and i see how hard it was because we
22:41
were kind of isolated but believers
22:43
showed up people prayed for us
22:45
and i could sense the spirit of god
22:47
working
22:48
there were times where i was really just
22:50
crying out for help
22:52
but it's it was good
22:54
because in times of struggle that's when
22:57
you see the spirit of god at work
22:59
[Music]
23:01
that's all i wanted to say today have a
23:02
wonderful day
23:04
and i'll see you next time thank you
