Joseph, The Cupbearer And The Baker & Their Dreams, The Implications Genesis 40:1-22
Feb 20, 2025
Joseph lands in jail for a crime he didn’t commit, he is promoted to another leadership role because of his impeccable conduct, which is a result of the grace of God. While in jail Joseph has an interesting visitation- both the king’s cupbearer and the chief baker get thrown in jail by Pharaoh for an unknown offense. They both have very significant dreams, but there is no one to interpret their dreams. But as providence would have it, Joseph proceeds to give an interpretation to both their dreams, and you know the rest of the narrative , the cup bearer is restored to his position while the baker gets executed. I want us to revisit that event and look for its greater implications. See video for an in depth look at this event.

hello good morning this is
0:02
t.com I hope you had a great uh week and
0:05
you're going to have a great weekend and
0:07
looking forward to Thanksgiving and all
0:10
the festivities uh today we're going to
0:12
go to Genesis and our Focus will be
0:14
Genesis uh chapter 40 and the title is
0:17
Joseph the cup Bearer The Baker and
0:20
their dreams and we are going to look at
0:23
the implications of the dreams that they
0:25
both had so let me give you a quick
0:28
introductions on uh
0:31
this chapter of Genesis now Joseph lands
0:33
in jail for a crime he didn't commit and
0:37
he's promoted to another leadership uh
0:39
role because of his impeccable conduct
0:42
which is again the result of the grace
0:44
of God and while in jail Joseph has an
0:47
interesting
0:48
visitation both the Kings on cup Bearer
0:51
and the chief Baker get thrown in jail
0:53
by Pharaoh for an an unknown offense and
0:59
they both have like very significant
1:01
dreams but there is no one to interpret
1:04
their dreams and as Providence will have
1:06
it J Joseph happens to be there and he
1:09
proceeds uh to give them the
1:10
interpretation of both their dreams and
1:13
you know the rest of the narratives if
1:15
you've been familiar with the story The
1:17
Cup Bearer is restored to his position
1:20
and the baker gets executed so I want us
1:23
to revisit uh that event again and we're
1:26
going to look for the greater
1:27
implications so first we're going to
1:29
read
1:30
the entire chapter and then we're going
1:33
to zero in on some key elements so I'm
1:35
going to go to Genesis 40 verse1 to 22
1:39
so let's do that now and I'm reading
1:42
Genesis 40: 1-22 today I used the NIV uh
1:48
uh translation so I'm going to pick up
1:50
from verse
1:51
one sometime later the C beer and the
1:54
baker of the king of Egypt offended
1:57
their Master the king of Egypt Pharaoh
2:00
was angry with his two officials the
2:03
chief cup Bearer and the chief Baker and
2:05
he put them in custody in the house of
2:07
the captain of the guard in the same
2:09
prison where Joseph was
2:12
confined the captain of the Guard
2:14
assigned him to Joseph and he attended
2:17
them after they had been in custody for
2:19
some time each of the two men they
2:21
called barer and the baker of the king
2:24
of Egypt who were being held in prison
2:27
had a dream the same night and each
2:30
dream had its own meaning when Joseph
2:33
came to them the next morning he saw
2:35
that they were dejected so he asked them
2:38
he asked fous officials who were in
2:40
custody with him in his master's house
2:42
why do you look so sad today people had
2:46
dreams they answered but there is no one
2:48
to interpret them then Joseph said to
2:51
them do not interpretations belong to
2:54
God tell me your dreams so the chief CBE
2:58
told Joseph's dream he said to him in my
3:01
dream I saw a Vine in front of me and on
3:04
the vine were three branches as soon as
3:07
he bed it blossomed and his clusters
3:09
ripened into grip or ripened into grips
3:13
Pharaoh's cup was in my hand and I took
3:15
the grips squeezed them into Pharaoh's
3:18
cup and put the cup in his
3:21
hand this is what it means Joseph said
3:24
to him the three branches are three days
3:27
within three days Pharaoh will lift you
3:29
up your head
3:31
up we will lift up your head and restore
3:33
you to your position and you will put
3:35
Pharaoh's Cup in his hand just as you
3:37
used to do when you were a
3:40
SC but when all goes well with you
3:43
remember me and show me kindness mention
3:45
me to pharaoh and get me out of this
3:47
prison I was forcibly carried off from
3:50
the land of the Hebrews and even here I
3:52
have done nothing to deserve being put
3:54
in a
3:56
dungeon when the chief Baker saw that
3:58
Joseph had given a favor
4:00
interpretation he said to Joseph I too
4:03
had a dream on my head were three
4:06
baskets of bread and the top basket were
4:08
all kinds of baked good for pharoh but
4:11
the birds were eating them out of the
4:13
basket on my head this is what it means
4:16
Joseph said the three baskets are three
4:18
days within three days Pharaoh will lift
4:21
off your head and impale your body on
4:24
the pole and the birds will eat away
4:26
your flesh now the Third day was
4:30
Pharaoh's birthday and he gave A Feast
4:32
for all his officials he lifted up the
4:34
heads of the chief cup Bearer and the
4:36
chief Baker in the presence of his
4:38
officials He restored the chief cup bar
4:41
to his position so that he once again
4:43
put the cup into Pharaoh's hand but he
4:45
impaled the chief Baker just as Joseph
4:48
had said to them in his interpretation
4:51
the chief C be however did not remember
4:53
Joseph he forgot him so this is the unv
4:57
vanished word of God now let's go back
5:00
to our presentation and we'll pick out
5:02
some key elements from this
5:03
story so you can clearly see that in
5:07
verse one and through four we are told
5:10
that the cop be and the baker did
5:12
something and I put those uh highlights
5:16
in in red and the first one is they
5:19
offended their
5:21
master and he was very
5:24
angry so they both greatly offended
5:28
their master and these guys were major
5:31
players in the king's Administration so
5:33
their tasks were very important so they
5:36
must have done something really bad like
5:38
a crime that was so offensive to Pharaoh
5:40
that he threw them in jail while he was
5:43
deciding their fate so they were most
5:45
likely just awaiting an imminent death
5:48
because once you mess up especially cck
5:50
be in the presence of the king you're
5:53
done so both the Baker and the chief C
5:56
better they both had some key positions
5:58
one of them was the C better better
6:00
basically he was always next to the
6:02
king and the chief Baker is the one
6:04
that's making all the the Brads and
6:06
stuff so these are major positions
6:08
because they can either poison the king
6:10
or kill I mean just just all kind of
6:11
crazy stuff so you can imagine that they
6:14
both knew listen we deserve to be thrown
6:16
in jail because we've done something
6:17
wrong and notice that they didn't
6:19
complain they didn't say like Joseph I
6:21
don't deserve to be in this jail they
6:23
both did something and they they agreed
6:25
and they acknowledged that they were
6:26
wrong because they had done something
6:29
none of them denied that they did
6:30
something that deserved uh what they
6:33
were suffering now so they must have
6:35
done egregious evil in the sight of
6:37
their master so let's set that at the
6:39
outset okay and then next we are going
6:43
to look at the baker's false assumption
6:45
now we read in the narrative that when
6:47
the chief Baker saw that Joseph had
6:49
given a favorable interpretation to the
6:51
chief called bar he said to Joseph I too
6:54
had a dream on my head were three
6:56
baskets of bread in the top basket were
6:58
all kinds of Baker goods for Pharaoh but
7:01
the birds were eating them out of the
7:03
basket on my head now what are the
7:05
implications of this phrase is is what
7:07
you need to ask yourself you can infer
7:10
from this that the baker became very
7:12
confident about his standing before
7:14
Pharaoh as soon as he realized that the
7:16
chief Baker the chief uh cup bear was
7:20
going to be restored he most likely
7:22
thought to himself surely if he can be
7:24
restored talking about the chief c bar
7:27
then I definitely shall be restored and
7:29
you know I I'll bring you like a quick
7:31
story like I remember years ago I was in
7:34
a public setting and I was called on to
7:36
speak and you know if you know me I get
7:38
overwhelmed and very intimidated when we
7:41
speaking in public you know for several
7:43
reasons and as soon as I was done
7:45
speaking somebody else got up and spoke
7:47
and then at the end of the event the
7:49
person came up to me and said as soon as
7:51
I saw you speak I thought to myself if
7:54
you can speak in public then I can
7:56
definitely speak as well so I don't know
7:59
if I I should have taken that as a
8:01
compliment or not but you get the point
8:03
basically he was telling me if you can
8:06
speak then I can speak and people do
8:07
that all the time if this person can do
8:09
it then I can do it it's almost like
8:12
it's almost like kind of looking down on
8:14
you or kind of assuming that if you can
8:17
get this then I certainly can get that
8:19
and the chief Baker had the same kind of
8:21
attitude he thought to himself since the
8:23
cup Bear's interpretation ended up in
8:25
his favor surely mine will be the same
8:28
because somehow somewhere he kind of
8:30
felt like he he may have been in a
8:32
better place or maybe he's offense or he
8:35
wasn't as bad as the chief got better I
8:37
don't know what it was but there was an
8:39
element of if this man is restored
8:41
surely I will be restored because I saw
8:44
that there was a favorable answer
8:45
therefore the same thing is going to
8:47
happen to me so he made a false
8:49
assumption so let's keep going now what
8:53
I going to look at is the both of these
8:55
dreams we're going to look at each of
8:57
the dreams and we're going to analyze
8:58
the dreams so let's start with the cup
9:00
Bearer and we're going to look at the
9:02
key elements so the cup Bearer said he
9:04
said to him in my dream I saw a Vine in
9:07
front of me and on the vine were three
9:09
branches Bri branches and as soon as he
9:12
buttered it blossomed and his clusters
9:14
ripened into
9:16
gripes and Pharaoh cup was in my hand
9:18
and I took the grips squeezed them into
9:21
Pharaoh's cup and put the cup in his
9:22
hand now notice the position of the
9:25
position of the vine the vine was before
9:28
the cup bar it was in front of him so he
9:30
had nothing to do with planting the vine
9:33
he didn't water it he had nothing to do
9:36
with his growth the vine dresser isn't
9:38
mentioned but it is surely not the cup
9:41
bear the vine appears to be
9:43
self-existent it grew on its own he
9:46
blossomed and his clusters ripened into
9:49
grapes all this happened without the
9:51
intervention of the cup beer all he had
9:54
to do was squeeze the juice of those
9:58
gripes into pharoh's cup so he had zero
10:01
input into this and all he did was
10:03
benefit from a Vine and grapes he did
10:06
not plant so you can see that now let's
10:08
go and look at uh the chief Baker's turn
10:12
now this is what he said on my head were
10:15
three baskets of bread in the top basket
10:17
were all kinds of baked goods for
10:19
Pharaoh but the birds were eating them
10:21
out of the basket on my hand on my head
10:24
now the three baskets notice their
10:26
position they were on top of the head of
10:28
the
10:29
the the chief baker in other words he
10:32
made those breads himself he was a baker
10:35
but before he even reached Pharaoh birds
10:38
were feasting out of the basket so what
10:41
is the main difference in both dreams
10:44
number one the vine went before the cup
10:46
Bearer but the bread were on top of the
10:49
baker's head it's very srow but it's
10:51
very obvious the cup be was restored by
10:54
the fruit of a Vine he didn't he didn't
10:57
produce or even plant basically somebody
10:59
else's
11:00
work while the chief Baker was executed
11:04
because of cakes that he made himself
11:06
basically his own
11:08
works now I want to set this at the
11:11
outset again they were both deserving of
11:13
capital punishment because they made
11:15
their Master very angry one received
11:19
mercy and Grace while the other received
11:23
justice so Pharaoh is almost like the
11:25
Lord in this story it's a small
11:27
prototype okay he mercy and Grace to a
11:30
guilty cup Bearer who through the
11:33
vine through the vine while the baker
11:36
received Justice because he decided to
11:38
justify himself before the King by his
11:40
own works so basically the cup bar was
11:43
granted grace and mercy because of the
11:47
vine but the chief Baker was executed
11:51
because of his own work he tried to
11:54
please Pharaoh he tried to appease
11:56
Pharaoh's anger by his own doing the
11:58
baker bread and we need to look at the
12:01
greater implication of the story what
12:03
can we learn from
12:04
this see the cup Bearer stands for all
12:07
of those who have received mercy and
12:10
Grace from God because of the work of
12:12
Christ the vine Jesus said somewhere I'm
12:14
the vine my father is the vine
12:17
dresser now we are guilty because we've
12:20
offended God and the same way the vine
12:22
went before us before Pharaoh Jesus goes
12:25
to God before us and he makes
12:27
intercessions on our behalf
12:29
and God grants us Mercy because of Jesus
12:32
and Jesus alone not because of your
12:34
works or my works but the baker
12:37
represents those who try to justify
12:39
themselves before God by their own Works
12:42
they try to appease God by their own
12:44
righteous works but God will not accept
12:48
this and they will receive Justice
12:50
because God said somewhere your own
12:53
righteousness is as filthy as filthy
12:55
rags okay no one will be justified
12:59
before God by their own works because
13:01
the scripture says the scripture says by
13:04
The Works of the law shall no flesh be
13:06
be be justified because we are unable to
13:11
please God by our own righteousness it
13:13
is impossible it's only by grace through
13:17
faith in Jesus Christ so Jesus and Jesus
13:20
alone satisfies the wrath of God and
13:22
imputes us with his
13:24
righteousness okay and I'm gonna read uh
13:27
Romans nine because this chapter in
13:29
Genesis is really consistent with uh
13:31
Romans 9:16 to8 so I'm going to go there
13:35
and let's let's see the greater
13:38
implication so in Romans 9 verse
13:41
6-18 Paul is talking about God's
13:44
Sovereign Choice which is something that
13:46
nobody want to hear and this chapter is
13:48
really consistent with Joseph's uh story
13:51
with the cup Bearer and the chief Baker
13:54
so this is what the scripture says it is
13:56
not as though God's word had failed for
13:59
not all who are descended from Israel
14:01
are Israel nor because they are his
14:03
descendants are they all Abraham's
14:06
children on the contrary it is through
14:09
Isaac that your Offspring will be
14:10
reckoned in other words it is not the
14:13
children of by physical descent who are
14:15
God's children but it is the children of
14:18
the promise who are regarded as
14:19
Abraham's
14:21
offspring for this was how the promise
14:23
was stated at the appointed time I will
14:26
return and Sarah will have a son that's
14:28
in keeping
14:29
Genesis not only that but Rebecca's
14:32
children were conceived at the same time
14:34
by Our Father Isaac yet before the Twins
14:37
were born or had done anything good or
14:39
bad in order that God's purpose in
14:43
election might stand not by
14:46
works you hear that again not by works
14:49
but by him who calls she was told the
14:52
older will serve the younger just as it
14:56
is written Jacob are loved for Esau I
15:01
hated What then shall we say is God
15:04
unjust not at all for he says to Moses I
15:08
will have mercy on whom I have mercy and
15:12
I will have compassion on whom I have
15:14
compassion it does not therefore depend
15:17
on human desire or effort but on God's
15:20
mercy for scripture says to Pharaoh I
15:23
raise you up for this very purpose that
15:25
I might display my power in you that my
15:28
name might be proclaimed in all the
15:31
Earth therefore God has Mercy on whom he
15:35
wants to have mercy and he hardens whom
15:37
he wants to hard see this is a tough um
15:42
Doctrine for a lot of people they always
15:45
say that is not fair that is not fair
15:48
God is not fair why does God do
15:51
that you know God has every right to
15:55
choose whom he wants to choose by his
15:58
own divine
15:59
will but we can't be justified before
16:03
God by our own works because we are by
16:07
nature objects of Wrath it is God who
16:09
extends his mercy and changes the
16:11
disposition of your heart and my heart
16:13
to receive his son Jesus as our Lord and
16:15
savior we can't come to God unless God
16:18
draw us and God chooses us so it is by
16:22
grace that we've been saved through
16:24
faith so that story in Genesis paints
16:26
that picture for us the C be
16:29
is us because we've we've received grace
16:33
and mercy undeserved from God because of
16:37
Jesus works theine and then the baker
16:41
stands for all those who throughout
16:43
their entire life try to please God with
16:46
their own works and at the end they will
16:49
be
16:50
judged it's not my word is the word of
16:52
God and God decides whom he saved
16:55
because God is God and God is the
16:57
creator I can't tell him what to do
17:00
because I am not a Creator and you are
17:02
not a Creator so the Creator decides
17:04
whom he wants to say because he said I
17:07
will have mercy on whom I have mercy and
17:09
I will have compassion on whom I have
17:11
compassion so it's up to God now people
17:14
say well that's the case we are robots
17:16
no you are not
17:17
robots you've been given
17:19
freedom but the thing is this your
17:21
freedom has been pretty much corrupted
17:26
by the fall of Adam so you are born with
17:28
a to love sin and to hate God so your
17:32
choices are biased because you make
17:34
choices based on your corrupted adamic
17:36
nature and it is God who has to open
17:39
your eyes to see the truth in
17:41
Jesus so I'm praying and hope that as
17:44
you hear this words the Holy Spirit
17:45
himself will will will talk to you will
17:48
speak to you so that you can receive the
17:50
Lord Jesus as who he is the only one son
17:55
of God and who can make atonement for
17:57
your sins and and the sins of the world
17:59
and Those whom God has chosen in this
18:02
world okay so I I'll invite you to read
18:05
these passages again and ask God himself
18:08
to Enlighten your mind to understand
18:09
this have a wonderful day and I'll see
18:11
you next time thank you
