Welcome back to our study of the book of Hebrews, today we'll continue to look at chapter 10 as we zero in verses 11-18. Last week, we talked about how only Christ's sacrifice was capable of taking away sins. We need to always remember to recall the background to this letter. The writer was addressing Jewish Christians who were being tempted to go back to the old sacrificial system because they were being persecuted. In the first ten verses of Chapter 10, the writer proves by using old testament Scriptures that Christ had to die to atone for the sins of God's chosen people. And the reason why Christ had to die was because the blood of bulls and goats could not take away sins, they only served as a temporary remedy until the time of reformation. Under the old system, people's conscience were still stricken because they couldn't feel and experience the internal witness of the Holy Spirit to ease the conscience. In verses 11-18, the writer is going to show that Christ's sacrifice didn't have to be repeated.

hello and welcome back to our study of
0:02
the book of hebrews
0:03
we began chapter 10 uh last week and we
0:07
talked about verses 1 through 10 in
0:10
which
0:11
the writer basically said that
0:14
jesus christ blood and sacrifice on the
0:16
cross took away its sins and he
0:18
contrasted that with the
0:20
the blood of bulls and goats and the
0:22
blood of bulls and good as we saw last
0:24
week could not take away sins because he
0:25
had no power in it
0:27
and we saw that all the sacrificial
0:30
system was a shadow of the things to
0:32
come
0:33
so basically the sacrificial system
0:35
served as a way for god to show that
0:38
ultimately jesus was going to come and
0:40
pay the penalty for the sins of the
0:42
world the sins of those that god are
0:44
chosen so we saw that
0:46
uh every year the the high priest went
0:49
and performed his duty on the day of
0:51
atonement to atone for repeal the
0:54
people's sins but we saw that all that
0:57
did was just covered over their sins it
1:00
didn't really take away the sins and as
1:02
a result people were reminded of their
1:04
sins every year so basically the day of
1:07
atonement instead of becoming a day
1:10
when they they rejoiced
1:12
they actually probably felt really
1:15
really really terrified because it
1:17
reminded them of all the sins that they
1:20
had accumulated all these years
1:22
because the blood of bulls and goats
1:25
could not take away sins so it was an
1:27
unfortunate thing but that's not why god
1:29
instituted it god actually put that in
1:31
place to show people and these people
1:34
that hey listen eventually i'm going to
1:36
bring my son and he's going to pay the
1:37
penalty and that's going gonna atone for
1:39
your sins and we saw
1:41
also that um
1:43
even though the people went and they
1:45
were declared uh ceremonially claimed
1:47
uh they didn't have that internal
1:49
witness of the spirit of god they didn't
1:51
have the assurance that their sins were
1:53
washed away because the blood of bulls
1:56
and goats could not take away sins so
1:58
all they felt uh was just more and more
2:02
i guess i would say i don't i don't want
2:04
to use i don't want to use the word
2:05
condemnation but they knew
2:07
that they still didn't have a right
2:09
standing before god because the blood of
2:11
bulls and goats could not take away sins
2:13
so therefore their conscience was still
2:16
stricken their conscience was still
2:19
feeling guilty
2:20
and that's what happened every year
2:22
until jesus came and then died on the
2:25
cross and said it is finished and when
2:28
he paid the penalty the veil was turned
2:30
from top to bottom that's indicating
2:32
that the access to the holy of holies
2:34
was now permitted to the common people
2:37
so again if you recall the background to
2:39
this letter uh the writer is addressing
2:42
jewish believers and a lot of them are
2:44
going back to the old system because
2:46
they are being persecuted so he writes
2:48
this uh letter to show them listen that
2:51
old system is done with that's not gonna
2:54
help you because the blood of bulls and
2:56
gods cannot take away sins
2:58
i know i'm repeating myself but i want
3:00
you to understand what's going on here
3:02
now today we're going to look at verses
3:03
11
3:04
to 18 and all we're going to talk about
3:07
is the fact that jesus christ did not
3:09
have to repeat his sacrifice because he
3:12
was sufficient and he pleased god so i'm
3:14
going to read verses 11 to 18 and then
3:17
we're going to dissect it all right
3:19
so let's go to hebrews chapter 10 verses
3:22
11 to 18. so i'm going to read it
3:25
so the scripture says
3:28
and every priest
3:30
stands daily at his service
3:33
offering
3:34
repeatedly the same sacrifices which can
3:38
never take away sins but when christ had
3:41
offered for all time a single sacrifice
3:44
for sins he sat down at the right hand
3:47
of god
3:49
waiting from that time until his enemies
3:52
should be made a footstool for his feet
3:55
four by single sack
3:57
by a single offering he has perfected
4:00
for all time
4:01
those who have been sanctified and the
4:03
holy spirit also bears witness to us for
4:06
after saying this is the covenant that i
4:09
will make with them after those days
4:11
declares the lord i will put my laws on
4:14
their hearts and write them on their
4:15
minds then he adds i will remember their
4:18
sins and their lawless deeds no more
4:21
where there is forgiveness of these
4:23
there is no longer any offering for sin
4:26
again this is the word of god
4:28
let's understand what the scripture is
4:29
trying to tell us here okay
4:32
so basically he says in verses 11
4:35
through 14 i'm going to read it again
4:36
because i believe it's important that i
4:38
do that
4:39
the scripture says and every high priest
4:42
or every priest stands daily at his
4:46
service offering repeatedly the same
4:48
sacrifices which can never
4:51
take away sins but
4:54
when christ had offered for all time a
4:57
single sacrifice for sins he sat down at
5:01
the right hand of god
5:03
waiting from that time until his enemies
5:06
should be made a footstool for his feet
5:08
for by a single offering he has
5:11
perfected for all time
5:13
those who are being sanctified so what
5:15
is the writer trying to say to his um
5:18
readers and listeners and us ultimately
5:21
so basically the levite
5:23
the levite priest they spent their days
5:26
offering the same sacrifices incessantly
5:29
and as we saw in the previous verses
5:31
they were unable to take away sins
5:34
none of those sacrifices could take away
5:35
sin so and the priest offered those
5:37
sacrifices daily
5:39
when we talked about the fact that it
5:41
takes a sacrifice of infinite value to
5:44
satisfy the wrath of god and wash away
5:47
the infinite guilt caused by sin so
5:50
consequently the blood of bulls and
5:52
goats didn't have that value so
5:55
therefore it could not take away since
5:58
because the blood of calves and goats
6:00
again could not achieve that end
6:02
it served as a temporary remedy until
6:06
the time of reformation and we've been
6:07
talking about that and that was the plan
6:10
god put that in place for that specific
6:12
purpose see jesus one time sacrifice on
6:15
the cross accomplished what thousands of
6:18
years of bloody sacrifices couldn't do
6:20
that's incredible again i'll repeat that
6:22
again
6:23
jesus one time sacrifice on the cross
6:26
accomplished what thousands of years of
6:29
bloody sacrifices couldn't do
6:31
it satisfied the wrath of god
6:34
and removed the sickness from the people
6:36
that's exactly what happened when jesus
6:38
died on the cross and when he said it is
6:41
finished see by raising jesus from the
6:43
dead
6:44
god was proving that he was pleased with
6:47
his sacrifice on the cross that's
6:49
exactly what happened and god as we saw
6:52
earlier in chapters in the earlier
6:54
chapters glorified jesus humanity by
6:57
doing what by sitting him as his right
6:58
at his right hand
7:00
until his enemies should be made a
7:02
footstool for his feet and the the death
7:04
will be his final enemy and we're gonna
7:06
see that uh in maybe later chapters
7:09
now this is how uh god showed that he
7:12
was pleased with jesus work by raising
7:14
him from the dead if you go to romans 3
7:17
verse 21 to 25 let's read the scripture
7:20
listen to what the scripture says
7:22
but now
7:23
the righteousness of god has been made
7:26
manifest apart from the law although the
7:29
law and the prophets bear witness to it
7:31
the righteousness of god through faith
7:34
in jesus christ for all who believe for
7:36
there is no distinction for all have
7:38
sinned and fall short of the glory of
7:40
god and are justified by his grace as a
7:43
gift
7:44
through the redemption that is in christ
7:47
jesus whom god put forward as what a
7:51
propitiation by his blood to be received
7:54
by faith
7:56
this was to show god's righteousness
7:59
because in his divine forbearance he had
8:02
passed over
8:03
for more sins you see when when you know
8:06
the the enemies of the cross
8:08
they probably went and then point their
8:10
fingers at god i say how can you let
8:13
these people get away with sins because
8:15
they knew that the blood of bulls and
8:17
goats could not take away sins so god
8:19
was patient because he knew that he was
8:21
going to ultimately bring jesus
8:24
so the scripture says that this is this
8:26
was to show god's righteousness because
8:29
in his divine forbearance he had passed
8:32
over former sin so by nailing jesus to
8:34
the cross by jesus death god showed that
8:38
he was actually punishing sins
8:40
in jesus christ and while raising him
8:42
from the dead god proved that he was
8:44
pleased with jesus sacrifice so the
8:47
resurrection of
8:48
christ is imperative without the
8:50
resurrection we have no salvation
8:52
because the resurrection
8:55
proves that jesus has satisfied the
8:58
wrath of god and proves that our sins
9:00
have now been paid for
9:03
so that's important the resurrection is
9:04
so important it's essential to our faith
9:07
okay
9:08
so
9:09
uh jesus by doing what he did completely
9:12
has given us a right standing before god
9:15
by his single sacrifice he didn't have
9:17
to do it twice he didn't have to do it
9:18
three times one time and god was pleased
9:22
okay our sins past present and future
9:25
have been atoned for by that single
9:28
sacrifice so now this is important here
9:30
because if you look at the verse right
9:33
the writer uses the word those who are
9:35
being sanctified
9:36
okay that's important because i want to
9:38
i want to tell you why see many may
9:39
struggle with this thinking that
9:41
declaring people declaring to people
9:43
that their past
9:44
present and future sins have been dealt
9:47
with may give people a license to do
9:49
what to sing okay so the writer is
9:51
anticipating that he knows that if if i
9:54
tell these people listen you have been
9:55
made perfect once and for all by that
9:57
single sacrifice people may say oh how
10:00
wonderful so i'm just gonna leave her
10:02
when i leave and therefore
10:04
it doesn't matter how you live now the
10:06
scripture says those who are being
10:08
sanctified that's not the case at all
10:10
because the writer refers to those
10:12
perfected
10:13
those with the right standing as those
10:15
that are being sanctified okay so jesus
10:19
doesn't just die for our sins so that we
10:20
remain in our sins now he sanctifies us
10:24
he set us apart so we can be people of
10:26
his use we can be vessels of what of
10:28
righteousness
10:30
because the writer answers that
10:31
objection he knows that people are going
10:33
to try to say listen
10:34
if that's the case then i'm just going
10:36
to live however i want and i'm going to
10:38
claim the blood of christ and that
10:39
happens today in our day and age where
10:41
are people that claim that jesus is
10:43
their savior but he's not their lord and
10:45
therefore they live however they want
10:48
and they claim that they are under the
10:49
blood of christ that is not what the
10:51
scripture teaches here okay
10:53
because the sanctification process is
10:56
meant to conform us to the image of
10:58
christ if you go to romans 8 verse 26 to
11:00
30 let's listen to what the scripture
11:02
says
11:03
likewise this spirit helps us in our
11:05
weakness for we do not know what to pray
11:08
for as we ought but the spirit himself
11:11
intercedes for us with groanings to dip
11:14
for words
11:15
and he who searches our hearts know what
11:18
the mind of the spirit is because the
11:20
spirit and to see it for the saints
11:22
according to the will of god and we know
11:25
that for those who love god all things
11:28
work together for good for those who are
11:30
called according to his purpose
11:33
for those whom before knew he also what
11:35
predestined to be what conformed to the
11:38
image of his son in order that he might
11:41
be the firstborn the firstborn among
11:43
many brothers
11:45
and those whom he predestined he also
11:47
called and those whom we called he also
11:49
justified and those whom he justified he
11:52
also glorified so you see we have been
11:54
called to be sanctified to be made in
11:57
the image of christ
11:59
so
12:00
when we are being sanctified the
12:01
sanctification process has to take place
12:04
that's what authenticates us as
12:05
christians okay so this is the just
12:08
because your sins past present and
12:10
future are dealt with have been dealt
12:12
with it doesn't give you a license to go
12:14
living however you want because the
12:16
scripture tells us in first john that
12:18
if we go on sinning we prove by that
12:21
that we are not children of god because
12:23
that means that god's seed does not
12:25
remain in us but for those who have been
12:27
called according to the purpose of god
12:29
the seed of god remains in us through
12:31
his spirit and he leads us into what
12:33
into righteousness we want to live
12:35
righteously right and righteously before
12:37
god so again
12:39
the writer is not calling people to
12:41
license licentious living he's basically
12:44
saying yes your sins past present and
12:46
future have been dealt with but that
12:48
does not give you a license to go on
12:50
living however you want okay i just
12:51
wanted to make that clear here because
12:54
right now if i were to die right now i
12:57
know what i'm i'm gonna be going okay
12:59
again that confidence is not from me
13:01
because god has declared me what
13:03
righteous in his sight now
13:05
does that mean that today i've not seen
13:08
i'm sure i've said some certain things
13:09
i've thought certain things that are not
13:11
pleasing to god okay but that's not the
13:14
my new bench that's not my new i don't
13:16
have a propensity to sin anymore like i
13:18
used to because now i have the spirit of
13:20
god that lives in me and that that does
13:22
what
13:23
he guides me and he works in me both to
13:25
will and act according to the purposes
13:27
of god okay so that's the sanctification
13:29
process that's important i just want to
13:31
mention that so now let's go to verses
13:33
15
13:34
to 18 and we're gonna end this this is a
13:37
short one today
13:38
and listen to what he says here and the
13:39
holy spirit also bears witness to us for
13:42
after saying this is the covenant that i
13:44
will make with them after those days
13:47
declares the lord i will put my laws on
13:49
their heart and write them on their
13:51
minds then he add i will remember their
13:53
sins and their lawless deeds no more
13:56
where there is forgiveness of these
13:58
there's no longer any offering of sin
14:00
okay so this is important so the writer
14:03
is basically saying in these verses if
14:05
you are still not convinced about having
14:07
a right standing before god then this is
14:10
one way to know it okay the witness of
14:12
what the holy spirit that's so important
14:15
because some of them may have been
14:17
thinking okay i still don't feel like i
14:18
have a right standing before god and he
14:20
gives them another way to figure this
14:22
this thing out he's saying
14:24
the witness of the holy spirit god
14:26
didn't just declare those
14:28
he called just before him without a
14:30
confirmation okay
14:32
and the writer shows through scripture
14:34
the evidence god has given and provided
14:37
to show our right uh standing before him
14:40
he quotes on jeremiah 31
14:42
verses 31 to 34. let's go to the
14:44
scripture listen to what the scripture
14:46
says here
14:47
in jeremiah 31 behold the days are
14:49
coming declares the lord when i will
14:52
make a new covenant with the house of
14:54
israel and the house of judah not like
14:56
the covenant that i made with their
14:58
fathers on the day when i took them by
15:00
the hand
15:01
to bring them out of the land of egypt
15:03
my covenant that they broke though i was
15:06
their husband declares the lord for this
15:08
is the covenant that i'll make with the
15:09
house of israel after those days
15:12
declares the lord i will put my law
15:15
within them and i will write them on
15:17
their hearts and i will be their god and
15:20
they shall be my people and no longer
15:23
shall each one teach his neighbor and
15:25
each his brother saying lord the lord
15:28
for they shall all know me from the
15:30
least of them to the greatest declares
15:31
the lord for i will forgive their
15:33
iniquity and i'll remember their sin no
15:35
more you see
15:36
god has given us an eternal witness
15:38
which is the holy spirit okay the holy
15:40
spirit now does what he leads us into
15:42
ways of righteousness he wants us to
15:44
obey the law of god because before when
15:47
we were being led by the sinful nature
15:49
we didn't have the capacity to obey but
15:52
now with the spirit of god god himself
15:54
ensures that we obey his word that we do
15:57
his will and this is the one of the
15:59
internal witnesses
16:01
that god has provided and then the first
16:03
evidence is god himself again like i say
16:06
enabling us to to do as well i will put
16:08
my laws on their hearts and write them
16:10
on their minds if you go to ezekiel 36
16:13
verse 22 to 27 god himself ensures that
16:16
we do his will
16:18
by doing what by enabling us uh through
16:20
his holy spirit to obey his laws okay
16:23
that wasn't possible under the old
16:25
system because of the weakness of the
16:27
sinful nature and this is the first
16:29
witness or evidence that the spirit of
16:31
god gives us okay so i i want to go to
16:34
um ezekiel 36 22-27 just to give you an
16:38
idea of what this this is all about
16:40
listen to the scripture
16:42
therefore say to the house of israel
16:43
thus says the lord god
16:45
it is not for your sick or house of
16:47
israel that i'm about to act but for the
16:50
sake of my holy name which you are
16:52
profaned among the nations to which you
16:54
came
16:55
and i will vindicate the holiness of my
16:57
great name which has been profaned among
16:59
the nations and which you are profaned
17:02
among them and the nations will know
17:04
that i am the lord declares the lord god
17:07
when through you i will vindicate my
17:09
holiness before their eyes you see that
17:12
god says he is gonna vindicate his
17:14
holiness before the people's eyes
17:17
i will take you from the nations and
17:19
gather you from all the countries and
17:21
bring you into your own land i will
17:23
sprinkle clean water on you and you
17:26
shall be cleaned from all your
17:28
uncleanness okay
17:30
okay and from all your idols and i'll
17:32
cleanse you and i'll give you what a new
17:34
heart
17:36
and a new spirit i will put within you
17:38
and i'll remove the heart of stone from
17:40
your flesh and give you a heart of flesh
17:43
and i'll put my spirit within you and
17:45
cause you
17:46
to walk in my statute and be careful to
17:50
obey my rules
17:52
so as you can see god himself ensures
17:54
that his people
17:56
walk according to his word because he
17:58
puts his spirit in us and he allows us
18:00
and enables us to walk
18:02
before him righteously this is
18:04
incredible okay now the next one is a
18:07
promise of complete
18:09
full forgiveness the scripture says i
18:12
will remember their sins and their
18:14
lawless deeds no more see in the
18:16
previous verses
18:18
we learned that the blood of woods and
18:19
goats could not take away sins and the
18:21
early sacrifice was a reminder that the
18:24
sins were still counting against the
18:26
worshipers okay now in this now now
18:29
in this in this in this case the holy
18:31
spirit promises that under the new
18:33
covenant
18:34
wrought by jesus god will no longer
18:37
remember their sins and lawless deeds
18:39
which means that the blood of christ
18:41
indeed serve as a propitiation and
18:43
expiration of the sins of the
18:45
worshippers okay so consequently there's
18:47
no longer any need to offer any
18:49
sacrifices for sin because god is
18:52
pleased with jesus work on the cross
18:54
this is why god says where there is
18:56
forgiveness of these there's no longer
18:58
any offering of sin basically why offer
19:01
any more
19:02
goats and cows if jesus sacrifice paid a
19:05
penalty so there's no need for it so
19:07
that has to stop that house there has to
19:09
be a stop to it now can you imagine what
19:12
those priests felt like
19:14
knowing that their job was done with
19:16
that they were no longer needed as far
19:18
as like
19:19
performing these duties because jesus
19:21
christ
19:22
paid the penalty by his single sacrifice
19:24
so i don't even know what they did after
19:26
that i don't even know
19:28
what kind of jobs they went to i don't
19:29
know what they did but that would have
19:31
been like a defining moment in their
19:33
lives as far as like
19:35
what do you do you know
19:37
so
19:38
again in today all we learned is that
19:41
the blood of
19:42
christ
19:43
didn't didn't have to be the sacrifice
19:45
didn't have to be repeated
19:46
again and again and again like the one
19:48
with the
19:49
blood of bulls and goats the sacrificial
19:52
system because jesus christ when he died
19:54
on the cross
19:55
he satisfied the wrath of god and then
19:58
his resurrection proved that god was
20:01
pleased with what he did on the cross so
20:03
therefore now we no longer have to
20:05
sacrifice anything anymore i mean
20:07
gentiles when doing that there are the
20:09
people the jewish people were doing it
20:11
okay now we also have been included in
20:14
this new covenant now we have access
20:16
into the holy of holies we can go to the
20:18
throne of grace and then commune and
20:20
then fellowship with god
20:22
but that doesn't give us a license to go
20:24
on living however we want and we talked
20:26
about that because those that god calls
20:28
he also sanctifies so if your your life
20:32
is characterized with just disobedience
20:34
you may not be a believer don't fool
20:36
yourself all right so because a true
20:39
believer will exude the fruit of the
20:41
spirit a true believer will want to do
20:43
the will of god and true believer when
20:45
he sins against the lord he is grieved
20:47
and he doesn't like it and he wants to
20:49
repent and he wants to go back and
20:50
fellowship with his father because
20:53
he knows that what he has done is not
20:55
pleased is not pleasing to god so
20:57
therefore you constantly want to watch
21:00
how you live
21:01
because you don't you don't wanna you
21:03
don't want a license to go out there and
21:04
just do whatever you you want just
21:06
because your sins past present and
21:08
future i have been a tone for doesn't
21:11
give you
21:12
uh the license to go on living however
21:14
you want okay that's not what the gospel
21:16
is all about it's about being set apart
21:19
for god now we are now versus of for his
21:21
use now we have been used by him
21:25
to to go about preaching the gospel and
21:27
being
21:28
light in the world okay
21:30
so that's all i wanted to say today and
21:32
i'll see you next week for our next uh
21:35
for the rest of the chapter we're gonna
21:36
look at verses 19 to 39 all right have a
21:39
wonderful day and i'll see you next time
