A Closer Look At Genesis 20:1-7, The Righteousness Of God #genesis20 #righteousness
Feb 19, 2025
Abraham and Sarah had just been told that they would have a child after the Lord visited them. Mind you they were both well advanced in years, and scripture clearly says that Sarah was past the child-bearing age. So this child that was coming was purely from the Word of God, it was the child of promise Isaac. Abraham had been tested by God and he failed some of the tests and passed the others. He was going to be tested again; he went into the territory of the Negeb where Abimelech was king of Gerar, and as was his custom he told Sarah to pretend she was his sister for fear that he may die at the hands of the people. God intervened miraculously to preserve Sarah from being violated and we read this in v7 Now then, return the man's wife, for he is a prophet, so that he will pray for you, and you shall live. But if you do not return her, know that you shall surely die, you and all who are yours.” We’re going to be exploring this passage today and see how it relates to the righteousness of God that HE bestows on His chosen ones. hello good morning and this is taiva
0:02
types.com
0:03
and today we're going to look at genesis
0:05
20 verse 1 to 7
0:08
and the title of the message is the
0:10
righteousness of god
0:11
so what i'm going to do first is i'm
0:12
going to give you a background
0:14
and then we're gonna jump into what this
0:17
means to us today
0:18
so let's go into the background so
0:22
basically
0:22
um abraham
0:26
and sarah had been told in genesis 18
0:29
that they would have a child and that's
0:31
when god visited them
0:33
and god came with two angels and then
0:36
from then on he went to
0:37
sodom to destroy the city so what i want
0:40
you to remember
0:41
is abraham and sarah were both
0:44
well advanced in years and sarah was
0:47
passed
0:48
on the childbearing age so the child
0:50
that was
0:51
that was going to be born was purely
0:53
from the word of god
0:55
by faith so he was called the child of
0:57
the promise
0:58
isaac so now abraham had been tested by
1:01
god
1:02
on several occasions he failed some of
1:05
the tests and he passed
1:06
some of the tests and then now he was
1:09
going to be tested again
1:10
for for the end time so what he did was
1:13
he
1:14
went into the territory of the negev
1:17
where abimelech was king of gerard
1:19
and as was his custom he told sarah to
1:22
pretend
1:23
she was his sister now sarah was
1:25
technically
1:26
abraham half sister but they had been
1:28
married for years and they were both
1:30
like well advanced in years
1:32
so the reason why he did it is because
1:35
he didn't want to die
1:36
because he felt like they were going to
1:37
kill him so he told her hey pretend to
1:40
be my sister
1:41
so they can take care of me so again
1:44
he basically put his wife in jeopardy
1:47
and
1:47
god intervened miraculously to preserve
1:50
sarah from being violated
1:52
and as we're gonna go to genesis 20 i
1:54
wanna zero you know verse
1:56
seven scripture says now then return the
1:59
man's wife
2:00
for he is a prophet so that he will pray
2:02
for you
2:03
and you shall leave but if you do not
2:05
return her
2:06
know that you shall surely die you and
2:08
all who are yours
2:10
so basically god issues a strong warning
2:13
to abimelech in a dream and so we're
2:16
going to explore
2:17
this passage today and we're going to
2:19
see how it relates to the righteousness
2:21
of god
2:22
that he bestows on his chosen ones so
2:25
the first thing we're going to do is
2:26
we're going to read the scripture
2:28
and then we're going to go and then
2:29
piece it
2:31
verse by verse so genesis 20 verse 1 to
2:34
7
2:35
from there abraham journeyed toward
2:38
on the territory of the negeb and lived
2:41
between qadesh and shaw
2:42
and he sojourned in gerar now abraham
2:45
said of
2:46
said of sarah's wife she is my sister
2:49
and abhimalek
2:50
king of gerar sent and took sarah but
2:53
god came to abimelech in the dream
2:55
by night and said to him behold you are
2:58
a dead man
2:59
because of the woman whom you have taken
3:02
for she is a man's wife
3:04
now abhimalek had not approached her
3:06
basically scripture
3:07
had been like had not slept with her so
3:10
he said
3:10
lord will you kill an innocent people
3:13
did he not himself say to me she is my
3:16
sister
3:17
and she herself said he is my brother so
3:19
they both
3:20
uh concocted this lie and the scripture
3:24
says in the integrity of my heart
3:26
and the innocence of my hands have done
3:28
this
3:29
then god said to him in the dream yes
3:32
i know that you have done this in the
3:33
integrity of your heart and it was i who
3:36
kept you from sinning against me
3:38
therefore i did not let you touch her
3:40
now then
3:41
returned the man's wife for he is a
3:43
prophet
3:44
so that he will pray for you and you
3:46
shall leave
3:47
but if you don't if you do not return
3:49
her know that you shall surely die
3:51
you and all who are yours and this was
3:54
the verse of our focus so now what we're
3:55
going to do is
3:56
we are going to piece this like verse by
3:59
verse now the first thing
4:01
what we read in verse one and two from
4:03
there
4:04
abraham journeyed or journeyed toward on
4:08
the territory of the negeb and lived
4:09
between qadesh and shaw and he saw
4:11
jeremiah
4:13
in verse 2 and abraham said of his wife
4:16
sarah she is my sister
4:18
so what what are the observations now
4:20
the people of the negeb
4:22
were pagans they did not believe in the
4:24
god of the hebrews they did not believe
4:26
in the lord
4:26
so abraham's concern for his safety was
4:29
legitimate
4:30
i'm not gonna say he wasn't legitimate
4:31
because he was so but the thing is this
4:34
it wasn't the first time that abraham
4:36
had told sarah to lie
4:38
about their relationship so we're gonna
4:40
go to genesis 12
4:41
verse 10 to 20 and we're going to read
4:43
about it
4:44
so let's read genesis 12 10 to 20.
4:48
now there was a famine in the land so
4:50
abram went down to egypt to sojourn
4:52
there for the famine was severe in the
4:55
land
4:56
when he was about to enter egypt he said
4:58
to sarai his wife
5:00
i know that you're a woman beautiful in
5:02
appearance and when the egyptians
5:04
see you they will say this is his wife
5:06
then they will kill me
5:08
but they will let you live say you are
5:10
my sister
5:11
that you may go well with me because of
5:14
you
5:14
and that my life may be spared for your
5:16
sick whenever i
5:18
entered egypt the egyptians saw that the
5:20
woman was indeed very beautiful
5:22
and when the princes of pharaoh saw her
5:24
they praised her to pharaoh
5:26
and the woman was taken into pharaoh's
5:28
house and for her sake
5:29
he dealt well with abram and he had
5:32
sheep
5:32
oxen male donkeys male servants female
5:35
servant female donkeys and camels
5:38
but the lord afflicted pharaoh and his
5:40
house with great plagues because of
5:42
sarai abraham's wife
5:44
so pharaoh called abram and said what is
5:46
this you've done to me
5:48
why did you not tell me that she was
5:49
your wife why did you say
5:51
she is my sister so that i took her for
5:53
my wife now then here is your wife take
5:55
her and go
5:56
and pharaoh gave man orders concerning
5:58
him and they sent him away
6:00
will be with his wife and all that he
6:02
had now
6:03
think about this for a second
6:07
pharaoh probably laid with sarah
6:12
you know he had probably she became his
6:15
wife basically because
6:16
scripture says and for her sake he dealt
6:18
well with abram so this
6:20
has gone on for this had come on for a
6:21
while and god
6:23
finally intervened so i just want you to
6:25
keep that in the back of your mind okay
6:27
then back ahead
6:28
now let's go back to what we are reading
6:29
today so we just read
6:31
genesis 12 10 to 20. so abraham
6:35
abraham and sarah they had made that
6:37
agreement before and some believe the
6:39
seller might have been
6:40
violated and i think she was and god
6:43
intervened and afflicted the people
6:45
in order to save sarah while abraham was
6:48
enjoying the felicity of
6:49
egypt so there is no indication in
6:52
scriptures that he was bothered by the
6:53
fact that his wife became pharaohs
6:55
i i don't read that in scripture so
6:58
imagine how sarah felt
7:00
her self-worth like this was crazy
7:04
imagine your husband basically says hey
7:07
pretend that you're my sister and then
7:08
she goes and leaves with another man
7:10
in the meantime abram gets all these
7:13
benefits
7:14
okay and finally god intervenes on
7:16
behalf of sarah and he saves her from
7:18
that place now fast forward okay several
7:22
several years later they're both like
7:24
pretty old now like
7:26
nine probably 99 and um
7:29
cells probably 90 okay and god had just
7:32
given them a promise that isaac was
7:34
going to come
7:35
so after all these years abraham still
7:38
hadn't passed that test
7:40
he was jeopardizing his marriage again
7:42
but even worse
7:43
he was now jeopardizing the plan of god
7:46
god had announced that both sarah and
7:49
abraham were going to have a child
7:51
isaac but because of his fear abraham
7:54
was literally
7:55
interfering with god's plan by putting
7:57
his wife in a compromising position
7:59
think about it god has just told them
8:01
listen you're going to have a child
8:04
next year at this time so now he goes
8:06
into the territory of the negeb
8:08
and in gerar and now he pretends again
8:10
that sarah
8:12
is his sister and now on the king of
8:14
gerard bimalek
8:15
takes sarah home and now he's now
8:19
putting god's plan in very
8:21
bad in a very bad place because now god
8:24
said i'm going to bring a child and i
8:26
imagine why would happen
8:28
if abhimalek had been with sarah
8:31
keep that in the back of your head and
8:33
let's keep going
8:35
so verse two to three and i've been like
8:38
king of garage sent and took sarah
8:40
but god came to abimelech in a dream by
8:43
night and said to him
8:44
behold you are a dead man because of the
8:46
woman whom you have taken
8:48
for she is a man's wife so
8:51
basically god intervenes to save sarah
8:53
and to preserve her integrity
8:55
by sending a strong warning to abimelech
8:58
in the dream
8:59
now had abimelech laid with sarah people
9:01
would have probably questioned
9:03
who isaac's real dad was they would have
9:05
questioned it okay
9:07
now do you see the gravity of the
9:08
situation so i want
9:10
i want you to pause for a second and
9:11
talk about let's talk about mary
9:13
okay the mother of jesus many people
9:16
have questions uh i've questioned
9:18
mary's integrity accusing her of being
9:20
unfaithful to joseph for
9:22
them being together before they were
9:24
married now if god
9:26
preserved the integrity of sarah because
9:29
because of isaac how much more do you
9:31
think he will preserve
9:32
the integrity of mary because of his own
9:35
begotten
9:36
son jesus you see what i'm saying like
9:39
this is how much god cared about sarah
9:41
and isaac
9:42
and his plane how much more do you think
9:45
he puts value on mary
9:46
and the coming of jesus christ his own
9:48
son because
9:50
when people talk like that this is
9:51
blasphemous they need to be careful
9:54
now what i'm saying here is this you see
9:56
that god intervened
9:58
where abraham failed because god wanted
10:00
to preserve the integrity of his plan
10:03
no one is going to mess with god's plan
10:04
he was going to bring isaac
10:06
and abraham was basically putting his
10:09
wife
10:09
in jeopardy but at the same time he was
10:11
also jeopardizing god's plan
10:14
of bringing isaac this was a dangerous
10:16
situation
10:19
so we read in verse four and six now
10:22
bimalek had not approached her
10:23
which means he had not touched her or he
10:25
had not been with her sexually
10:27
so he said lord will you kill an
10:30
innocent people
10:31
did he not himself say to me she's my
10:33
sister and she herself said he's my
10:36
brother
10:37
in the integrity of my heart and in the
10:39
innocence of my hands
10:41
i've done this then god said to him in a
10:43
dream
10:44
yes i know that you've done this in the
10:46
integrity of your in the integrity of
10:48
your heart
10:48
and it was i would kept you from sinning
10:51
against me
10:52
therefore i did not let you touch her
10:54
god
10:55
took this personal abimelech's heart was
10:59
softened because the lord
11:00
softened his heart he didn't resist the
11:02
word of the lord as pharaoh did
11:05
see hence the lord kept him from sinning
11:07
against god
11:08
you see that god took it personal like i
11:09
said god said
11:11
he was i who kept you from sinning
11:13
against me because god was about to
11:15
bring
11:15
isaac and that would have completely
11:20
destroyed the integrity of sarah and the
11:23
integrity of
11:23
isaac and everything else they would
11:25
have questioned his paternity
11:27
okay so god's plan will come to fruition
11:30
and no man can twist it or thwart on the
11:32
plane of god
11:33
so the lord was gracious to abimelech
11:36
now the next verse is the verse
11:38
of our focus the verse seven so far all
11:40
we've seen is that abraham
11:42
failed at the test and abimelech was
11:44
kept from sinning against
11:45
god and sarah's integrity was preserved
11:49
now what about abraham so far there's no
11:51
mention of him and we're going to read
11:52
what verse 7 says
11:54
now verse 7 says now then
11:57
return the man's wife for he is a
11:59
prophet
12:00
so that he will pray for you and you
12:03
shall leave
12:04
but if you do not return her know that
12:06
you shall surely die
12:08
you and all who are yours now
12:11
i don't know about you but when i read
12:13
verse 7 the first time
12:15
i was completely flabbergasted because
12:17
i'm thinking
12:19
abraham was responsible for the problem
12:21
that had taken place yet god
12:22
called him a prophet and god actually
12:25
commanded
12:26
abimelech to go to abraham so he could
12:28
pray for him
12:29
so that god could refrain from killing
12:31
him
12:32
and the entire people of gerar now
12:35
keep that in mind it just didn't make
12:37
sense to me like i was thinking okay
12:39
what is going on here
12:40
i thought to myself is this how god
12:42
rewards a sin
12:44
okay i guess like you know we read in
12:47
romans let us sin so that grace may
12:49
abound
12:50
but god forbid i realize that i
12:53
misunderstood what was taking place in
12:55
this verse
12:56
god was actually shown how he grants his
12:59
righteousness
13:00
to those who don't deserve it okay and
13:02
he also
13:03
showed in this verse that he disciplines
13:05
those whom he loves and we'll see how
13:07
he did it keep that in mind god's
13:10
righteousness
13:11
see scripture say now then return the
13:14
man's wife for he is a prophet so that
13:15
he will pray for you and you shall leave
13:18
okay so if abraham had been able to
13:21
preserve sarah
13:22
then he would have had something to
13:24
boast about first of all he did not
13:25
trust god that means he put
13:27
he trusted in his own ability to to to
13:29
kind of make up stories to preserve his
13:32
int
13:32
to preserve his life so he did not trust
13:34
the lord so had he been able to like
13:36
protect sarah he probably would have
13:38
been bragging and boasting about it at
13:40
some point
13:41
but here god declares him a prophet
13:45
a righteous man based on god's own word
13:47
it wasn't abraham
13:49
abraham didn't deserve to be called the
13:50
prophet is by god's word
13:53
god's own declaration god said he's a
13:55
prophet
13:56
based on god's own word okay
14:00
abraham didn't call himself a prophet
14:02
the lord declared him a prophet in
14:04
keeping with ephesians 2 verse 8-9
14:06
scripture says
14:07
for by grace you have been saved through
14:10
faith and this is not your own doing it
14:13
is the gift
14:14
of god not a result of works so that no
14:18
one may boast
14:20
abraham could never boast about anything
14:22
he was justified by god's word
14:25
not his works okay now this isn't a
14:28
license to go on sinning so that grace
14:29
may abound
14:30
and i'll show you why i want you to put
14:33
your thinking caps on for a minute just
14:34
think about it
14:36
imagine abhimalek comes to abraham and
14:38
said
14:39
the lord say to your prophet and that
14:41
you pray for me and i will leave
14:42
now i want you to think about abraham's
14:44
prayer to the lord what was he like
14:46
do you think abraham went to god in
14:48
prayer and said god
14:50
i want you to forgive abimelech because
14:53
he
14:53
took sarah against my wishes no abraham
14:57
was facing his own shame and his own
15:00
failure
15:01
because i don't think abraham had to
15:02
actually abraham probably prayed first
15:05
that god would forgive him for what he
15:06
had done
15:07
this is the second time he did it in
15:09
egypt and now he's doing it again in
15:12
gerar
15:13
so basically i'm sure his prayer went
15:15
like this oh lord please
15:17
i'm a wretched man forgive me for i
15:19
don't deserve your grace and your mercy
15:22
and i'm a man of unclean lips forgive me
15:25
for what i've done because i failed
15:27
to preserve my wife and i failed to
15:29
preserve the integrity of your plan so
15:31
please forgive me lord
15:33
forgive me for what i've done i'm
15:36
ashamed and i confess my sin before you
15:38
i know i have failed you and i know that
15:41
what i've done
15:41
was completely unacceptable but lord
15:44
because you are gracious
15:45
you forgave me and you declared me
15:47
righteous in your sight by your own word
15:49
so forgive me and enable me and
15:51
strengthen me so that i don't do this
15:53
again
15:54
now lord please may you forgive
15:56
abimelech
15:57
may you also heal him because i know
16:00
that i've done this
16:01
but please because you are gracious
16:03
forgive him
16:04
this is probably how abraham's prayer
16:06
went i don't think he went there and say
16:07
hey lord
16:08
forgive him for he took my wife now
16:10
abraham had to face his
16:11
own failure and he then he understood
16:13
the righteousness of god because
16:15
god imputed him with the righteousness
16:17
that was foreign
16:18
to abraham he wasn't abraham's own
16:20
righteousness god declared
16:22
him a prophet okay so he had to face his
16:25
own failure and he repented of it i'm
16:27
sure he repented
16:28
okay this there's no way abraham could
16:31
tell god forgive a bible like for taking
16:33
my wife there's no way
16:35
he first had to ask the lord to forgive
16:37
him for not protecting his wife
16:39
remember what scripture says in
16:40
ephesians 5
16:42
husbands love your wives as christ lord
16:45
of the church
16:46
and give him support for her in order to
16:48
preserve her
16:49
in order to make her holy washing her by
16:52
the
16:53
washing of water with the word that she
16:55
might be holy and blameless
16:57
in his sight abraham didn't do that he
16:59
didn't
17:00
um he didn't like the scripture says
17:04
husband loves your wife as christ loved
17:06
the church he didn't love his wife
17:08
as christ loved the church in order in
17:10
order to make her holy
17:11
by giving him himself up abraham didn't
17:14
do that he gave up his wife
17:16
for his own safety he did the opposite
17:18
so i'm sure when he was praying
17:20
he faced that and he repented of it so
17:23
i'm sure he was probably one of one of
17:25
the hardest prayers abraham prayed
17:28
and i don't think he had a cavalier
17:29
attitude as if god was rewarding his
17:32
behavior so don't read the scripture
17:34
and misread it because god was doing
17:37
killing basically two birds with one
17:39
stone thereby presenting this to abraham
17:41
and say
17:41
what are you gonna do about yourself and
17:43
then now god gave him the strength
17:45
to admit his sins and to be forgiven and
17:48
to be declared righteous in god's sight
17:50
based on god's own word and that's what
17:52
i wanted to focus on
17:54
so what can we learn what do we learn
17:55
from this the scripture says
17:58
god leads us in paths of righteousness
18:00
for his name's sake
18:01
that's psalm 23 and god will always
18:05
preserve his integrity
18:07
integrity we are declared righteous not
18:09
because of what we've done but because
18:11
of what god
18:12
has done and because of god's own word
18:14
and our righteousness has been imputed
18:16
to us
18:17
there is absolutely nothing we can do to
18:19
earn a right standing before god
18:21
apart from god himself accomplishing
18:23
that on our behalf
18:25
and god does not encourage sin but he
18:28
uses our failures
18:30
to point the weakness of the sinful
18:32
nature and his ability inability to
18:34
please god i'll read that again
18:36
god does not encourage sin or rewards
18:40
sin but he rather uses our failures to
18:43
point the weakness of our sinful nature
18:46
because we are unable to please god in
18:48
the sinful nature
18:50
so that we may fully rely on his spirit
18:52
and that's what i believe
18:54
was taking place in his passage god is
18:57
now in the business of rewarding sin
18:59
so when you read that story understand
19:01
that what god was doing was he was
19:02
first showing that apart from him we
19:05
cannot do anything
19:06
this is what jesus said apart from me
19:08
you can do nothing remain in me and i'll
19:10
remain in you
19:11
and abraham could not preserve the
19:13
integrity of his wife
19:15
and the integrity of god's plan apart
19:17
from god himself intervening
19:19
and declaring abraham a prophet so god
19:21
had to come
19:23
and work in abraham in that process and
19:25
i'm sure abraham learned a lesson about
19:27
righteousness because righteousness that
19:29
we have is a righteousness that has been
19:31
applied
19:32
to us by god himself so we take no
19:34
credit
19:35
for it at all it's all god's work
19:38
so i want you to really zero in on that
19:41
and then go back again
19:42
and read it again yourself and then see
19:44
if the holy spirit himself enlightens
19:46
your mind to understand the scripture
19:48
okay have a wonderful day and i'll see
19:50
you next time for another study thanks
19:52
for watching
