Udupi Shree Krishna Matha Temple Visit
Udupi Shree Krishna Matha – Brief Note Udupi Shree Krishna Matha is a famous Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Krishna, located in Udupi, Karnataka. It is one of the most revered pilgrimage centers for Vaishnavites in South India. The temple was founded in the 13th century by Sri Madhvacharya, the great philosopher and proponent of the Dvaita (dualism) school of Vedanta philosophy. According to legend, Madhvacharya discovered the idol of Lord Krishna buried in a large ball of gopichandana (holy clay) brought by a ship from Dwarka. The idol, depicting Krishna as a small child holding butter in his hand, was installed at this Matha. A unique feature of the temple is that devotees have darshan (view of the deity) through the Navagraha Kindi (a small silver-plated window) instead of directly entering the sanctum. The temple is surrounded by eight monasteries (Ashta Mathas) established by Madhvacharya, which take turns in managing the temple’s rituals and administration. Udupi Shree Krishna Matha is not only a spiritual center but also a hub of traditional learning, devotion, and culture that continues to attract devotees from across India and abroad.
