It's fair to say that Live Golf has truly shaken up the world of men's professional golf
0:04
especially with the signings of Jon Rahm and Tyrell Hatton for its third season in 2024
0:10
But how does it all work? In this video, we're going to find out. The Live Golf League consists of 14 events across the world
0:20
starting in February and running until the closing event in August. While five of its tournaments are held in the US
0:27
the league will also visit Hong Kong, Australia, Singapore, Saudi Arabia, Mexico, Spain and the UK
0:34
for its 2024 season. Each event is three days long featuring 18 three balls all starting
0:41
simultaneously with a shotgun start and there is no mid-tournament cut. For 2024 the league has 54
0:47
players, 13 teams of four each along with two wildcard entries each week. These wildcards can
0:54
earn points in the individual standings and if they perform well could earn a future spot on a
0:58
Live Golf team. In 2024 each tournament has a 20 million dollar purse for the individual event
1:04
divided up between all 54 players and a five million dollar purse for the team event going
1:09
to the top three teams To give you an idea of how that is all split out let take a look at the Live Golf Las Vegas event that took place in February 2024 Dustin Johnson won that event and took home
1:21
$4 million, while second place Taylor Gooch won $1.875 million. With no cuts at Live events
1:28
it still means that last place Brendan Steele and Charles Swartsell took home $50,000 each
1:34
despite finishing 22 shots behind the winner. The team prize money is divided between the top
1:40
three teams and at the Live Las Vegas event Smash GC won the team event by having the best combined
1:45
score over the three rounds. Its four members, Graham McDowell, Taylor Gooch, Brooks Koepka
1:51
and Jason Kokrak split the three million dollars between them. The second place team was Four Aces
1:57
GC. They split 1.5 million dollars while third place Range Goats GC split 500,000 dollars
2:04
Aside from tournament weekends themselves, players and teams are battling it out across
2:09
the season for two titles, the individual championship and the team championship. The
2:15
individual championship runs throughout the season. So at each tournament players finish
2:20
with their three round total score to par as we're sort of used to and then the top 24
2:25
finishers earn points corresponding to their finishing position The player with the most points at the end of the season wins the title So first place at a tournament gets 40 points
2:37
second place gets 30 points, and third place gets 24 points. Points are given out to players finishing inside the top 24 only
2:45
These points gather cumulatively through the whole season. So, in 2023, to give you an example
2:50
the individual title went to Taylor Gooch, who amassed 192 points across the whole campaign
2:56
At the end of the season, non-exempt players who finish 45th or lower in the individual points table are relegated from the league
3:04
So last year, Lee Westwood and Martin Kymmer finished 45th and 49th respectively
3:09
But because they're exempt, because they're team captains, they did not get relegated
3:14
Jadiah Morgan, James Pyatt, Chase Koepka and Shi Wang Kim were relegated from the league for finishing outside of the top 45
3:22
In 2024, the league introduced a transfer window and free agency period
3:26
to allow for movement between rosters and trades to take place in the off-season
3:32
You can visit the Golf Monthly website for a separate explainer on how the live transfer system works
3:37
The team competition worked in a very similar way to the individual championship
3:42
So each of the 13 teams builds a Q score across a tournament weekend And the top eight teams at the end of the weekend earn points corresponding to that finishing position
3:53
So the team in first place for a weekend is awarded 32 points, second place gets 24 points and third place 16 points
4:00
all the way down to the team finishing in eighth that week. For example, after two events of the 2024 season, John Rahm's new Legion 13 team finished first in one event and fifth in the other
4:13
With 32 points being awarded for first place and eight points being awarded for fifth place, the team currently has 40 points, leaving it in first place in the order of merit after two events
4:23
In one final twist, leading the league table after 13 events won't actually win you the team championship outright, as the league table simply decides the seedings for the final round of the year
4:35
The Live Golf League team championship finale takes place at the final event of the season in a knockout format that combines both match play and stroke play
4:45
So to give you an example, last year, 2023, while four aces GC amassed the most points over the season
4:51
they didn't win the final team knockout because Bryson DeChambeau's crushes GC
4:56
won that final event of the year and claimed the team championship for 2023
