WATCH: Lincolnshire residents blast 'greed' as plans for huge solar farm are approved

Anna O'Reilly, so please update me, what's been happening, what are people saying

Well, Nana, we're here near Gainsborough on the actual land where this solar farm would be built

the UK's largest solar panel farm here. It's 3,000 acres of farmland, currently a potato field

but the government have approved this. They're pushing for green energy. They say that it could

create enough power to power enough energy to power 300 000 homes and that it could create around

1 275 jobs but people here are protesting they're saying that it's causing industrialization of the

countryside and they're saying they don't want it we might be able to see some pictures of the

protesters earlier they had the banners you mentioned it was organized by reform uk but people

from other cross-party councillors were coming along as well as local residents to say that

they don support this This is what they told us earlier It just the sheer size All of these developments have battery storage facilities connected to them

which I don't care who you are, they're dangerous. We built our communities on top of a large aquifer

so if anything goes wrong with those, the best site, it'll leach into the aquifer and pollute the water supply

It's madness, turning our lovely county into a giant solar farm. Absolute madness

It's all about greed, money, foreign companies making massive killings. So that's what the locals at the protest told us

I'm now joined by Ingrid Sheard. She's a local councillor and also deputy mayor for Greater Lincolnshire

Just tell us the sort of strength of feeling here. Oh, the feeling today was extremely strong

and it was great to see the number of people that turned out. Also the age range

And as you say it was not party political it was not one sided it was a total mix People are totally opposed to this And what they fearful for is this is prime agricultural land that is being destroyed for no reason at all It actually been proven that these solar panels will not actually save people money on their energy bills

And what would you say to the jobs that could be created for the area? The jobs that they're potentially saying might be created for the area, that's not actually true

The jobs that will be created will be created short term while the solar panels are being put in place

once in place those jobs vanish again and they're not particularly going to be local people they're

going to be people who potentially have the skills but may be brought in from outside

so I think that is actually not potentially true. Does the farmer have any say who owns this land

for solar panels to be put on here? So the farmer Nick Hill who actually owns this piece of land

has actually been forced into a compulsory purchase order that he is appealing against

currently. So no, this is being forced on him and it's unfair and he doesn't want it

And what happens at the end, say, if these solar panels only have a life cycle of 60 years

So the problem with that is, is Lincolnshire going to become the dumping ground for these

solar panels as well as the graveyard So far I believe that these solar panels once they reach the end of their lives the companies that have brought them in will no longer be here And what will

happen is that whoever potentially owns the land will be responsible for getting rid of them

Currently, the only place to get rid of them is in France. Now, who has the money to basically

dismantle them and ship them over to France to get rid of them? I don't believe any money that's

being made currently will be of any benefit because in the future, you will have to pay so

much to get rid of these solar panels or end up with graveyards. And this isn't the only project

here is it in Lincolnshire you know there's a strength of feeling here that there's other

projects battery farms that Lincolnshire's sort of bearing the brunt of this this green energy

So the problem we have in Lincolnshire is we are becoming the dumping ground. The statistics show that there will be over 60 square thousand meters of land taken up and it's

prime agricultural land. This land should be used to feed Britain. It's absolutely absurd that

we think that we can use this land for solar panels. Thank you for speaking to us, joining us
