Just joining us now is Bev Turner, who's going to be presenting The Late Show Live
0:05
So, Bev, yeah, I mean, it looks like this is absolutely blowing up stateside
0:09
What's your views on what we're seeing here so far? Even people in America who think President Trump and his government are doing a really great job
0:16
have some reservations about the actions of these Immigrations and Customs Enforcement officers
0:23
It's an incredibly divisive issue in America. They have so far detained..
0:30
The latest figure at the end of December was more than 68,400 people
0:33
have been detained under this process. So, seized from their houses and taken to detention
0:39
to find out their fate as to whether they are allowed or not to stay in America
0:44
1.9 million people have self-deported, with a little encouragement to do so
0:51
and 600,000 people have been forced to deport. This is a very controversial method of removing people
1:02
who should not be in America However President Trump has also got illegal migration down to zero on the southern border So zero people having been millions of people under Biden Why Because this is a
1:16
deterrent. This is a massive deterrent in the way that we don't have such a thing. So even though the
1:22
border is enforced, yes, and that is one of the reasons people aren't coming in. Those people who
1:26
might want to go into America illegally are watching footage like this and knowing that
1:31
they're probably going to be on the losing side. And so there's a lot of controversy around it
1:36
Mainly, let me explain what the controversy is, because in America you've got people who may have gone into the country
1:42
25, 20, 25 years ago, housekeepers, gardeners. They might have worked for one family for all that time
1:49
They're members of the community who are well-loved, but they don't actually have legal right to be there
1:53
But because their system is very different to ours, they may have been allowed to stay there
1:57
Some of them are able in some way to pay tax and be registered with social security numbers
2:02
And so the objection is, why are you getting rid of those people who have contributed to our society for many years
2:10
Now the Americans would say well we don get rid of those people We take them into detention We assess whether they should or should not be allowed to stay Have they committed a crime have they paid towards some taxes have they been part of our community Yes they have OK they can stay But in the maelstrom exactly
2:24
what you were talking about, of emotion and division and Trump derangement syndrome and
2:29
all of the heightened tension, it bubbles over into events like this
2:34
All right, just go on. I was going to say that even Susie Wiles, who is Trump's right-hand woman, in her big interview
2:41
she admitted that the ICE agents had been overzealous. I can't remember what exactly the phrase she used
2:47
but, you know, had acted in a manner over the top. Sometimes they certainly appear to do so
2:56
I've just been watching the footage, actually, as I was coming into the studio that you were showing there with the incident
3:02
Shall we try and bring that back up? The one of the actual car incident here
3:05
So we stop it just before the actual shooting, but you get the gist of what happens really
3:11
and here you go. So Bev, do you want us to kind of talk to what you're seeing here
3:15
Yeah, so this is the ICE agents intercepting this vehicle, the accusation being that the driver then starts to reverse and maybe drive forward in an action which might have hit one of the ICE agents and at that point it appears that she been shot dead
3:32
But the person on the right of the car, is that just a random person or is that an ICE agent
3:36
I don't know who that is. There are other angles where you can more clearly see the ICE agent
3:39
directly in front of the car's bonnet. I don't know if we can track that down
3:44
I'll just bring in Kamala Harris has tweeted, another politician failing to bring down the tone
3:49
called the debate. She says, Many of us have seen the horrifying and painful video
3:55
which makes it clear that the Trump administration's explanation of this shooting is pure gaslighting
4:00
A full and fair investigation at the state level is absolutely necessary. And Governor Waltz, who has just announced his intention
4:07
to not stand for another term, has announced a full investigation. Right, OK
4:13
And this is only a few blocks around the corner from where George Floyd died
4:18
Is it? Yes. Good Lord. It's about four blocks around the corner. Right
4:21
So this issue of the state versus the individual, of the armed officers versus what they would see
4:27
as somebody that wasn't committing a crime, is always a very heightened emotional issue in this area anyway
