One is we can stop with the self-hatred of this country. You know, this country isn't Russia

we don't want to just throw ugly propaganda at young people. And we want people to think for themselves

it's absolutely and always been part of our culture. But when children are brought up to think

that we're the source of all evil in the world or that the empire was about slavery, not its abolition

or that, you know, the indigenous population are inherently racist, I just think the sort of woke diversity agenda

is really damaging to national coherence. And it also stops a much more truer and more honest story being told

Patriotism, Dawn, is a very natural instinct. And it's your love of country

It's a love of place where you brought up. It's not propaganda. And I just think we need to encourage a little bit of intelligent, decent patriotism so that we can see the world and be proud of our place in the world

not to not question elements of the past, but to be broadly proud of our extraordinary achievements

of our country and our civilisation and actually be willing to state what it is and to defend it

And I just think we haven't done that enough. Our political classes haven't done that enough

in the past 20 to 30 years. Bob, I don't know why we've lost our way so much with this

I mean, only 10% of 18 to 28-year-olds at the moment say they would fight for their country

Can you imagine if that had been the case in World War I and World War II and many of the more recent conflicts Well to be honest in World War II back in the 1930s I don know if you remember

there was a very famous Oxford Union debate saying that the Oxford Union would refuse to fight for king and country

And, you know, that passed back in, I think it was 1933 and 1934

And by 1939, we were having to fight for king and country and then empire

for the simple reason that we had disarmed ourselves so much that when a dictator appeared and threatened us, we had no choice

And sadly, we are not in a dissimilar position in Eastern Europe

You go to a place like Poland, and there are some people in Poland who assume, and I'm not talking about people necessarily on the street

but people in the military and politics, who think that they may well be at war with Russia in the next few years

likewise people in the Baltic Republic. So, you know, it is a really urgent conversation

because if our NATO allies are going to be in conflict, there's a very good chance that we will be as well

Isn't that saying, Bob, the best way to keep peace is to prepare for war

Yes, a really good point, Dawn, and it pains me. As someone who writes about this, I have a book out called The New Total War

which looks at Russia's invasion of Ukraine, but also the sort of template of war that we're going to be looking at this century

when some conflict is going to be military, some conflict will be informational or economic or political

but we are in a new era of conflict with authoritarian powers

The problem is we're just not ready for that because our political and military elites

haven't educated our population as to the sort of warfare we're going to be facing

There is a chance that we will face real, I say real, old-fashioned traditional war in Eastern Europe

but there's also the war of values and people try to find divisions and disunity in our society as well

And there are things that we could be doing. We're not doing them, sadly. Absolutely
