It’s week two in the GB News Premier League predictions battle between Paul Coyte and goalscoring legend Clive Allen. After an opening round that saw Paul edge ahead thanks to an exact scoreline, he leads Clive by nine points to five. With the points system now well established (three for an exact score, one for the right result), bragging rights are already taking shape.Transfer sagas, unsettled players and big-money moves continue to dominate the headlines, but Paul and Clive are focused on the football. Well, second week of predictions between me and Clive Allen. Clive, am I in the lead
0:08
Yes, I'm pleased to tell you, Mr. Quet, that you're leading by nine points to five. You got a correct score, which was Brighton, Fulham, 1-1
0:17
Yeah, OK. So with three points, if you get the score exactly right, and one point, if you get the result
0:24
Yeah, exactly. Are you happy with your performance? slow start to the season
0:30
I'm going to call it yeah so it's all it's not how you start
0:35
it's how you finish isn't it Clive someone in show you said many years ago listen quick word
0:39
before we do anything else and that is there's so many of these transfer sagas
0:43
which are going on and we did mention this last week and there's the situation
0:47
with Izak we've seen it with Wieser as well with a refusing to play
0:51
and now Eberici Eze strangely had a was a little under the weather
0:56
so he couldn't play for Crystal Palace in the conference. What are the chances of that
1:01
So now Arsenal have taken him from Spurs and it's seen that
1:05
but what do you make of all this? Is it, do you think Spurs are a little late on it
1:10
Is it because it's just fortunate for us? Well, I say I'm fortunate for Spurs maybe
1:15
that then we find out that there's the injury that Arsenal had
1:22
I don't know, what do you make on all this? Is it something that he'd been
1:25
because he's a big Arsenal fan, Maybe this is something that was always going to happen
1:29
What do you think? Yeah, I think possibly. Obviously, his ambition may be to have played for his boyhood club
1:36
He was there as a schoolboy, I believe, many years ago before being released
1:41
moving on and starting his career at Queen's Park Rangers. Listen, Paul, I think this is going on all the time
1:48
especially when the windows open, when everybody's wheeling and dealing. Most of these stories you don't hear about
1:55
But obviously, the SA1 was obviously prominent. And then all of a sudden, Arsenal stepped in when Havertz got injured
2:04
I still say, and I'll continue to say, that the window should have been shut before the season started
2:10
Yeah. And everybody knows where they are with their squad of players
2:14
I just think it's really disruptive at the start of the season that the window's open and these things will go on
2:20
right the way to the final wire when the window closes at the end of the month
2:25
You've been involved in these windows, also working with Harry Redknapp as well, and over the years
2:31
So how does it work? I mean, is everyone different, or is it a situation where you would, as a club
2:39
go, you know what, we like this player, then what happens? Do you phone the other club and say
2:44
we would like him, or is it agents spoken to? And then there's all this thing about add-ons
2:49
I mean, it's probably you could go on forever, But in a nutshell, how do transfers actually work
2:58
In a million and one ways, Paul, I think. You know, there's agents involved, the club's representatives
3:05
the recruitment staffs of the respective clubs. There's so much conversation between so many people
3:13
But obviously, the final call comes from the clubs. But there are so many things that have to fall in place for these things to go through
3:21
So it's very, very complex. It's very difficult. It's a really difficult time for obviously the staffs of the clubs who are trying to identify players, get them over the line, whether that happens nice and smoothly. Very rarely will that happen in that way. I think it's part and parcel of the game now. As we know, it is massive, massive business as well
3:45
And does the final say go to the player or is it to the club? So does the player have to agree? So if the club wants to sell a player to someone that maybe bids more, does the player have to agree to it or can the player be sold
3:59
No, I think if the player's under contract, then the final say will be his
4:04
Obviously, the club will be guiding them if they want to move them
4:10
All parties have to come together and have to agree at some point
4:16
But as you can imagine, there's so many things going on within that transfer
4:20
that it's not always easy. It's very rarely a smooth operation. Sure, well, we can see that
4:28
Anyway, let's talk about smooth operations. We are now going to move into our predictions
4:34
OK, 9-5, I'm up. So I'm going to relax a little bit into this. So maybe I should just relax and enjoy some of these predictions
4:41
because there's some tricky ones here. Right, we're going to start with the first game, then West Ham, London derby against Chelsea
4:47
So they lost against... And also my outside pick about relegation. I know you disagreed, but again, very early days
4:54
West Ham lost to Sunderland 3-0, although Sunderland first game in the Premier League after so many years
5:00
so I always make allowances for that. Chelsea 0-0 against Palace which is a bit of a surprise
5:06
so kick it off what do you think West Ham and Chelsea
5:10
Well I think a poor result for West Ham I did watch the game they had opportunities in that game against Sunderland
5:16
obviously a buoyant Sunderland seven new players there coming into the team
5:20
first Premier League game for a long time great result for them
5:23
And I think this is already a really tricky game for Graham Potter and West Ham
5:29
Their first home game of the season against the Chelsea side will be disappointed
5:33
they haven't beaten Palace on the opening day. I'm going to go West Ham 1, Chelsea 2
5:39
Okay, I'm going to go for the same result, but a different score
5:43
West Ham 0, Chelsea 2. So we both agreed on Chelsea. What do you make on Chelsea in that first game
5:49
Is it a bit of a slight surprise or not? because the Club World Cup
5:55
I mean, it's surely going to take it out of players, isn't it? I mean, it's going to pay in the end
6:00
whether it pays now or a little bit later. Yeah, I think so. I think, you know, I would say it was a sluggish start
6:07
as far as Chelsea were concerned. Maybe there was still some hangover from that Club World Cup
6:13
which they did brilliantly in, but I think it's going to take a toll on them
6:18
as the season unfolds. Yeah, yeah. Right, first game on Saturday, They're Manchester City against Spurs
6:24
Man City won 4-0 away. Spurs scored three at home, but that was it
6:30
Burnley, this is at the Etihad. And Spurs, it's so struck. This record against Man City, I know they lose a few games
6:39
but Spurs win more than they lose against Manchester City. Is it a bogey team thing
6:44
Is it the way they play? Or is it just one of those things
6:48
well Spurs I just think the way Spurs play against City they've caused them
6:54
problems numerous times now in the last couple of years so I think this is a fascinating game both teams will go there full of confidence after the starts they had Impressive 4 victory for City We were at Spurs last week
7:09
I think it was exciting. Fantastic Richarlison goals. And are they going to be disappointed
7:17
that they haven't got Eze into the building? I'm not so sure
7:21
I think the team that played, the team that got that result, will go to City full of confidence
7:27
And they're going to play the way that they played against Paris Saint-Germain, aren't they
7:32
In that Super Cup, it's a similar sort of situation, which they were very good at for 80 minutes
7:38
And again, it's going to be a similar sort of team to them. Yeah, I think that's exactly the way we've already seen that, you know
7:46
Thomas Frank is going to make changes from week to week, and the teams he's playing against
7:52
So I would expect some changes. you know it was a I thought a very bold move
7:58
the young players that played in midfield against Burnley obviously Paulinho and
8:02
Benton Cor come in as the game wore on I would expect them
8:06
to be back into the into the team like they were against PSG
8:09
I think it's going to be a fascinating I think it's going to be a really good marker
8:13
as to where each of these teams are at already this season
8:17
I'm going to go for you want me to go first or you're going to go first
8:21
oh you've already done it you said you say 2-1 City I'm going to go 2-1 City
8:25
I think they might just actually swim. See, a man that's played for both clubs
8:30
I am, well, I'm going to go... Keep this between us, Clive
8:36
2-1 City. OK. I've got a funny... I've got a funny feeling
8:40
Good for you. And you know what? In the years I've known you, usually I'm the one that's going
8:45
oh, I don't know, don't fancy this. And you'll go, look, have faith. It's going to be all right
8:49
Spurs are going to win. So you're going to say City 2-1. I'm actually going to go Spurs
8:53
2-1. I may be harassed after this, but I'm going to give it a go. Right, next
8:57
one, Bournemouth against Wolves. Bournemouth, 4-2 then. They were lucky, weren't they, up at Anfield
9:03
last week? And then Wolves, of course, Man City, 4-0. Not a good start, but then again, they get that Man City
9:11
game out of the way. It's being played at Bournemouth. What do you reckon on this one? Yeah, I thought Bournemouth were pretty
9:17
impressive against the champions at Anfield. Opening game of the season, difficult
9:21
game, got themselves back level. It was only two late goals that won it for Liverpool
9:27
I think Bournemouth are a dangerous team, especially at home as well
9:32
What sort of hangover where Wolves have had from, obviously, a bit of a drubbing on the opening day of the season
9:38
I'm going to go for Bournemouth just to edge this 1-0. I'm with you, but I'm going 2-1
9:44
So Bournemouth to win 2-1. When you say about a bit of a hangover for Wolves
9:49
is that like well we've got City out of the way forget that
9:52
you know it's one of those free hits we just move on
9:56
or will it affect them at all I just think it affects your confidence
10:02
because you've been so convincingly beat you now need to get a result
10:06
in that next game it just adds that little bit more pressure so it just becomes
10:10
so much more important now you don't want to be two games in
10:15
and no points on the board so yeah I think it's a tough game for Wolves
10:20
Right, next one, Brentford against Villa. I do worry for Brentford, I really do. I think manager
10:26
going, some of their top players going, losing to Forest 3-1. They've got a really good run in the
10:32
Premier League. I don't know how long it's going to last. If they can stick around, I think it's
10:36
going to be a really terrific performance by Brentford this season. Playing against
10:40
Aston Villa, 0-0 against Newcastle. I'm just going to go straight in. I'm going to say
10:46
Brentford 0-0 Villa 2. I think Villa are going to win I think Brentford are going to struggle what do you reckon Clive yeah I think
10:52
I think you're right I think um I think it's going to be I think most people have looked at
10:56
Brentford and thinking Thomas Frank the influence he's had over the club for a number of years
11:01
Keith Stevens taking over I think it's going to be Keith Andrews sorry taking over I think it's
11:05
going to be a very very tough baptism for him um obviously heavy defeat of Forest I'm going to go
11:14
Villa just to edge it by one goal to nil. Right, one nil
11:18
When a manager leaves a club though and also to not only
11:23
is the manager gone but then we've got the Wieser situation whereas he's refusing to play
11:29
and of course Bumo's gone and there's other players that have gone as well
11:35
It really is just the whole vibe is going to be worry, isn't it
11:41
I mean, it's... And also for a new manager to come in, because he's also got to assert himself
11:46
It's not like he's even got the players that Thomas Frank had, because there's been over the years, there's been a few that have disappeared
11:52
So, you know, how do you react to that? What do you do? I suppose you just do the best you can with what you can
11:58
But is it the sort of job that you would want to take on, you know
12:02
as your first major Premier League role on your own? Very difficult one
12:07
I think you've got to be very confident in your own ability. you've got to try and influence the players, get them on side
12:13
which is always going to be a difficult task following Thomas Frank. So, yeah, and also just that
12:20
maybe just that little bit of lack of experience as well, which, you know, managerially
12:26
especially when you've got the whistle thing going on all the time, players, big players who have left
12:33
it really is a tough, it's a really tough baptism fire really for Keith Andrews
12:38
What would you do if you're in a situation and you're managing a club and then you've got a player that's playing up and he's got a contract? These players are on good money, they've signed contracts, that's what they're supposed to be there for. But I guess they know that if they refuse to play, it's such big money at stake here and it's so important that the club eventually will, they're just going to say, look, just go
13:04
So really, it's the right thing to do would be, I guess, to say
13:09
look, no, you've signed the contract. You've got to stick around. Whereas the sensible thing to do, I suppose
13:13
is just cut your losses and get rid though, isn't it? What would you feel? Yeah, I think there comes that point where, you know
13:19
if the player's not on board, he's not going to be pulling his weight for you
13:23
He's refusing to play. I think you have to come, sometimes cut your losses and move them on
13:30
obviously trying to get the best deal that you can but that is always going to suffer as well
13:35
because the club's buying no of the unrest so as I'd say that's a really difficult one for him to
13:41
deal with right at the start of his managerial career with Brentford. I know it's sometimes
13:46
players who've got to do this think of their career or maybe there's agents involved but
13:50
it's so disrespectful to the fans I mean the thing is everybody it's always the fans that
13:55
are forgotten about which really are the most important thing when it comes to football there's
13:59
There's no question about that. That it the relationship between players and fans And it almost like I never cared you know And it almost like you two fingers up to the fans isn it And that the thing that I find most distasteful more than anything else
14:13
Yeah, I think there is a way. I think you look at maybe Eze, a Palace
14:17
He's conducted himself perfectly well. He said he was going to play right up to Tennessee
14:23
up to the deal being done with Arsenal. So once that deal's done, then he's moving on
14:29
But I think, you know, to actually, for any player, Isaac as well with Newcastle, for any player to refuse to play
14:36
when you're actually under contract until you're sold, you're under contract to that club
14:41
I think that's the wrong way to go about it. I really don't. It's got to be uncomfortable as well, hasn't it
14:46
If you're that player, right, you've got to go off and train on your own. It's got to be a really uncomfortable time
14:51
It's like a kid at school and nobody's talking to them. I know there's a means to an end
14:55
but it must be a really uncomfortable thing to have to go through
14:59
Do you think, is it usually advice that they're given that's making them do this or is it the player
15:05
Yeah, I think so. I think sometimes they're not advised in the best way
15:09
I do think that also they get a reputation for themselves as well
15:13
Buying clubs will look at it and think, oh, they come here and they're not happy they could do that here
15:18
So I think there is a way in which you should conduct yourself. obviously
15:22
we don't know 100% the ins and outs as to why they're making
15:28
these decisions and making these calls but yeah I don't think it's the right way
15:34
to go about their business no I agree right Burnley versus Sunderland
15:37
so Burnley they've gone up and Scott Parker's Burnley went up with 100 points
15:43
but Premier League is now going to be a lot more difficult as we now found out
15:47
after they lost three in the Spurs they are playing at home then against Sunderland, who also have gone up
15:54
So they're the two of the three clubs that went up. Sunderland ended up going through the playoffs
15:59
but had a great result against West Ham. So this is a tricky one to call, isn't it
16:05
I think it's a very tricky one. I think you obviously seen Burnley first-hand live last week at Spurs
16:11
I was a little bit disappointed that they, you know, they didn't have a little bit more adventure
16:16
Yes, we knew of their defensive record in the championship. Sunderland I thought were really bright
16:22
against West Ham but I'm going to go for one of these
16:26
surprise results in week two and I'm going to go Burnley one
16:30
Sunderland nil right I'm going Burnley one Sunderland one could I be called sitting on the fence for that
16:37
is that just a cowardly prediction no I think that's a sensible prediction
16:43
but hopefully you get it wrong I'm a very sensible man but we'll see how things go
16:48
Right, Arsenal against Leeds. So this is 5.30. Arsenal at home. They beat Manchester United then
16:54
I mean, it wasn't overly impressive. And also, it looks like Eze Weld still hasn't signed yet
17:03
I mean, what does it take for these players to sign? He was on the verge of signing for Spurs
17:07
That never happened. Now he's probably definitely going to sign for Arsenal. But that still hasn't actually happened
17:13
So when he's going to play, we don't know. But then playing against Leeds, who managed to beat Everton, but it's at the Emirates
17:20
I don't think you'll see anything away from an Arsenal win, right
17:25
No, I think what we saw with Arsenal was that machine just getting going again
17:31
I thought they were powerful, very, very dangerous as set pieces, as we know
17:35
Everything we knew about Arsenal, we saw at Manchester United. I thought Manchester United obviously were better, but still, I think, you know
17:43
So Arsenal have that really ruthless streak about them. They get themselves in front
17:47
They can defend. I see them running out two nil victors against Leeds
17:53
Usually, we often agree, but this is the first time we've absolutely agreed on the money
17:58
So I'm saying the same. Arsenal two, Leeds nil, which is 5.30. Right, let's go to Sunday
18:03
So Crystal Palace then against Nottingham Forest. Players, so Eze going. It looks like Mark Gay
18:10
I mean, he's probably going to go as well. Again, I'm so with you
18:16
If only this was all done and dusted before the start of the season. Is it because, what is it, a European thing
18:21
Is this the reason for this? It just doesn't seem... Well, yeah, there is
18:25
Obviously, that comes into the equation as well. And, you know, it was thought that Eze was going to play
18:31
but Arsenal wouldn't want him playing in that competition if he's going to join them
18:35
They want him for the Champions League. I am surprised that the way that there seems to be so much turmoil
18:43
at Palace with the squad of players. They don't have the biggest squad, the deepest squad
18:49
They're now lost. As a gaze going into the last year of his contract
18:53
you would expect that they will sell him. If they don't sell him in this window, it will be in January
18:59
Otherwise, he walks away next time for free. That, for me, in this day and age
19:05
it's very rare that you'll get players going in to their final year of their contract
19:10
with a view to leaving for nothing. So, you know, it was an amazing season for Palace last year
19:17
winning the FA Cup for the first time, qualifying for Europe. I thought, as I said before
19:23
I thought they was harshly treated in not being allowed to play in the Europa
19:27
Yes. But they've got a really tough season ahead and their squad just seems to be dwindling
19:36
And, you know, Oliver Glasner, the coach, has gone on record as saying that
19:40
He needs players. He needs some bodies in the building. You would expect that Palace will do some business
19:45
before that window shuts. But this is an interesting one. I think Forrest have certainly bolstered their squad
19:52
They kept Hughes-Wright. I think that was a really good move from their point of view
19:57
frustrating for Spurs as well in respect of whether they could get that deal done
20:03
I'm going to go Palace 1, Forest 1. I agree with you again
20:08
Exactly the same. We've got Crystal Palace 1, Forest 1. So yeah, we're agreed there
20:11
That's obviously going to happen. If we're both saying that, that's obviously going to be what the score is
20:16
Everton against Brighton, lost against Leeds. Brighton 1-1 against Fuller. When do you think of Brighton this year, Clive
20:23
I think Brighton have overachieved for a number of seasons now, really do
20:29
I have to say that the way that they turn over their players
20:33
and the way that they stay at the level they've been at has been absolutely incredible
20:38
I just wonder if they can sustain that for another season I think we know every club has their banks of ysts
20:48
who are studying and looking at the way they play looking for how to stop the opposition
20:52
and I think Brighton if they finish in the top half of the table
20:56
will have had another magnificent season I really do but I think this is going
21:01
to be all about the new stadium Everton playing for the first time in their new stadium you know great atmosphere It been a long time coming And obviously you know Goodison Park one of my favourite away grounds when I played in my career
21:16
And now they've got this beautiful stadium down in the docks in Liverpool
21:20
Why was it one of your favourites? I think just because the proximity of the crowd to the pitch
21:27
it was very, very tight and really atmospheric. It was always loud
21:33
even though there might only be 25,000, 30,000 supporters in there at Goodison
21:38
It was a special, special ground. It really was. But new stadium, I think Everton are going to beat Brighton 2-1
21:48
Right. I did have, I made a change as we were talking because I thought
21:52
yeah, new stadium, that's got to be worth a goal. New stadium has got to be worth a goal in the Premier League
21:58
So I did have 1-0 and I'm now going to, even though I still think
22:01
I'm going to give Everton another goal. So I think they're going to get to probably one at both ends
22:06
and christen the new stadium. I don't think Brighton are going to have much luck
22:10
I think it does make a difference, doesn't it? Whether it be a new stadium, whether you've just gone up
22:15
there's that extra thing. I know they should always be, they'd be able to give 100%
22:19
but there's always that little extra that comes from somewhere in a situation like that
22:23
Right, Clive? Yeah, and the extra supporters in there, Paul, as well. Yeah, of course
22:27
So that's going to make it even louder. Goodison was loud, but I'm sure this new stadium is going to be very, very loud as well
22:37
Right, so we'll both give Everton the win. 2-1, you say. I'll say 2-0. Sorry, Brighton
22:41
Fulham against Manchester United. Here's a tricky one then. 1-1 they drew against Brighton, didn't they
22:49
Manchester United lost at home to Arsenal. So many Manchester United fans that I've spoken to that are pretty excited about what's going on
22:58
because the front line's been changed. And Bumo, I thought, looked good
23:02
And we've got Hoyland probably on his way out now. But I'm not so sure
23:08
I'm not completely convinced. What about you? I thought the early signs were good for this season
23:16
Again, you've got to take into account they were playing Arsenal, who we all know are going to be right amongst it at the top of the league
23:24
How resilient Arsenal are. Manchester United created chances against them. I thought the way that they counter-attacked was really quite impressive without finishing off
23:35
So I'm going to go for a Manchester United win, 1-0. For some reason, I've gone 2-2
23:42
Don't ask me what I've just got. For some reason, I'm going for four goals at Fulham
23:47
So I'm going to say 2-2 for that one. And finally, though, the last game is Newcastle and Liverpool
23:52
So Liverpool kicked off, was the first game last week, and they're the last game this week
23:57
This is going to be the Monday night game. Well, this is going to be, should be a bit of a ding-dong
24:03
So, Newcastle, though they only drew 0-0 with Fulham. We know that Liverpool won 4-2 against Bournemouth
24:09
Thoughts on that one? So, it's away to Newcastle. Yeah, it's going to be a big game
24:15
Obviously, you know, all the attention he's at, who won't be playing, I'm sure, for either side
24:22
He probably won't be within about 100 miles of St James' Park
24:27
isn't he, that night? He's probably going to be way away. And I just have that feeling that, you know
24:33
a deal will be done once that game's out of the way, just because of the way it's fallen
24:38
Sometimes these things happen that the clubs are like, right, we're going to get it done, but we can't before the game
24:44
So, you know what? Lucky for him, though, that if he does go to Liverpool
24:49
that that game is out of the way. out of two games, he's probably thinking
24:53
thank God for that, that that's going to be gone so he doesn't have to go back up there again. Well, yeah, he knows he won't have to play there this season
24:58
which again would be quite nice, I think. Just let everything die away over the course of the season
25:06
But I'm going to go on as even on this. Newcastle 1, Liverpool 1. Right, OK
25:11
I'm going to go Newcastle 1, Liverpool 2. I think Liverpool will find a way of doing it
25:15
So that's what I fancy for that one. Let me ask you this then, Clive
25:19
I mean, so many different clubs that you've been to. And when there's London clubs, you play for quite a few London clubs
25:24
and then you go to a rival. What's the worst? Or let me ask you this one first
25:30
Which is the one that's worried you the most thinking, blimey, what's it going to be like when I go back there
25:39
Interesting, interesting. Fortunately, I never had any problems going back to my former clubs
25:47
And fortunately, obviously the best way to quieten everyone down is to score
25:51
And more often than not, I did. And that was always my focus, was to obviously do the job I had to do for my new club
26:00
But if I did get that opportunity to score, I always felt I was almost alive and electric
26:07
and waiting for that opportunity. Just to almost say to my former club, well, you know, that's what you're missing
26:15
so that was always the mindset that I had going into those games
26:20
I always looked out for them obviously whenever I joined a new club
26:24
you're looking for that first time you're going to go back pretty fortunately
26:30
the receptions were good so it was a good experience but it was one that
26:37
it was always better if you scored and certainly if you won
26:41
Did you ever do the non-celebrating thing? see I've got no problem I honestly have I've got no problem with players if they score against
26:50
their old team they're celebrating the goal they've scored it's not like two fingers up to
26:54
the other team it's I just think they've got to be right to so how do you feel about that
26:58
yeah no I was exactly the same I was celebrating with my we're obviously with my new club and the
27:04
supporters that I was I was playing for that was that was all nothing against nothing against the
27:09
opposition at all. That's the way I always felt. You always enjoy celebrating goals
27:18
Yeah, you should. I mean, because it's always a bit, it's almost like disrespectful to the new club
27:23
not to celebrate instead of being disrespectful with the old one. But anyway, we scored against all of them
27:28
So you have every right to. Clive? Acknowledge your new supporters. Yeah
27:33
So thanks very much. Sorry about that, everybody. And thanks very much. And then we'll take that
27:36
which is pretty much how I felt when I beat you on the first set of results, Clive
27:42
But I was respectful, yet I enjoyed it. So maybe there's a long way to go
27:47
It's a long way to go. Good luck. And we'll catch up next week
27:52
We'll do next week's. And I know we'll probably speak before then
27:55
and see how we've done between the two of us. Have a great week. Thanks for that. Will do. And you, Paul
28:00
Thank you. Thank you
