hi I'm Gary B from tips for travelers
0:02
and in this video I'm going to tell you
0:04
how to make the most of Venice how to
0:05
survive this crazy crazy City the
0:08
historic part of Venice has a population
0:10
of around about 60,000 permanently the
0:12
bigger are area has about 250,000 but
0:15
the city gets between 50,000 and 60,000
0:19
tourists a day it's manically busy and
0:21
so with these tips that I'm going to
0:22
give you this will tell you how you make
0:24
the most of your trip to Venice my first
0:27
tip is watch my mustsee and must do
0:30
Venice video now don't go there straight
0:31
away because at the end of this video I
0:33
will have the whole video and it tells
0:35
you what you absolutely should see if
0:37
you're in Venice and so my second tip
0:40
for making the most of Venice is plan
0:42
when you come 500 cruise ships visit
0:45
every single year and that is really
0:47
when Venice gets really packed so I'm
0:49
here at the beginning of October when I
0:50
video this and we've been here for 2
0:52
days and there's been five cruise ships
0:54
every day so the city gets packed with
0:57
cruise passengers lots of Tours Etc so
1:00
one of the things to do is to look at
1:01
the time of year so if you come in March
1:03
which is really before the cruise season
1:05
starts or you come in October when the
1:06
cruise season is kind of wrapping up you
1:08
probably will find it a little bit
1:09
quieter one of the things I would
1:11
suggest you do if you're planning to
1:12
visit is take a look at a site like
1:15
cruise tims.com and search for Venice
1:18
and that will tell you how many cruise
1:19
ships are going to be in the town when
1:22
you're here and that gives a sense of
1:24
just how you know packed the city will
1:26
be the other thing to do is it gets very
1:28
very busy on weekend lots of people come
1:30
to Venice for romantic weekends so if
1:32
you can try and avoid the weekend in
1:34
terms of time of year so that's really
1:36
March and October are great times of the
1:38
year to come when they likely to be
1:39
quieter my third tip really is one of
1:41
the big challenges of Venice is a
1:43
massive big tourist trap because so many
1:45
visitors come into Venice and it's
1:47
really just built up this whole industry
1:48
of lots and lots of tourist traps a
1:50
couple of things that you should
1:51
absolutely look out for in some of the
1:53
big tourist centers like St Mark Square
1:55
be extremely careful because you might
1:57
find having a round of coffees between
2:00
three or four of you could cost you
2:02
€100 because a lot of those places will
2:04
charge you up to €25 that's nearly $30
2:08
simply for sitting down that's before
2:09
you've even ordered your coffee so
2:11
really before you go into any place
2:13
check if they're going to charge you as
2:15
sort of a cover charge for simply being
2:17
there the second thing is really avoid
2:19
restaurants which have multiple
2:21
languages because you're probably going
2:22
to get ripped off because they are
2:24
really uh tourist trap places the food's
2:27
not great so again places like near
2:29
Rialto Bridge you'll also find it just
2:31
uh crazy busy if you really want to have
2:33
Italian gelato one of the things I would
2:35
strongly recommend you do is again avoid
2:37
tourist areas if you find gelet gelato
2:40
which is very brightly colored and
2:41
really sort of uh you know piled up high
2:44
like that it probably is not proper
2:46
genuine homemade gelato it's probably
2:48
more kind of manufactured and sort of
2:50
whipped up so it's probably not going to
2:51
be proper gelato another thing to watch
2:53
out for is you'll find various people
2:55
setting up stores selling sort of
2:57
designer bags again clearly they're all
2:59
fakes and really be very careful that
3:00
you don't get ripped off and Confused
3:02
over pricing but certainly remember
3:03
those bags are going to be fake bags and
3:06
so my next tip is around souvenirs the
3:08
two most popular souvenirs within Venice
3:10
are Morana glass and mask of course
3:12
Venice is famous for its mask balls
3:15
however again be extremely careful
3:16
because a lot of those you will find are
3:18
basically made in China so you'll find
3:20
glass which is very inexpensive it's not
3:22
Morana glass it's probably Chinese and
3:24
again there's lots of masks which are
3:26
really inexpensive if you genuinely want
3:28
to buy Italian made glass and beautiful
3:31
Italian uh masks you're going to pay a
3:34
lot of money so make sure that you again
3:35
avoid the sort of the big tourist areas
3:38
the little stalls on the side of the
3:39
canals uh and you know perhaps if you
3:41
really want to buy Morano glass actually
3:43
head out to Morano Island then you can
3:45
be absolutely sure it is you know
3:47
genuine another thing that people of
3:49
course like to do when they come to ven
3:50
is just go on a Gonda ride however be
3:52
very careful cuz this could end up
3:54
costing you a lot of money so only go on
3:56
a Gonda ride if you really want to be
3:57
able to tick It Off The Bucket List so
4:00
it's likely to cost you around 80 for
4:02
about a 40-minute ride and then it goes
4:04
up in increments every 20 minutes so it
4:06
could cost you another €40 so it could
4:08
cost you around $100 the price goes up
4:11
fairly significantly after 7:00 at night
4:13
when it becomes €100 so you like to be
4:15
paying $20 and again you have increments
4:18
of around about €40 for every 20 20
4:20
minutes after that so it is a pretty
4:22
expensive thing to do so only really do
4:23
it if you really want to just be able to
4:24
tick it off a great alternative to doing
4:26
a gondola ride which personally I prefer
4:29
is the water buses uh because it costs
4:31
around €0 for a 24-hour pass so that's
4:34
what about
4:35
$25 and they have great great itineries
4:38
they're very easy to work out the maps
4:39
are really good they're very well
4:41
signposted and even if you end up going
4:42
the wrong direction you know it's not a
4:44
very big city you just jump off and get
4:45
on in the other direction but it's about
4:48
€20 for a 24-hour pass it goes down the
4:50
Grand Canal it heads pretty much
4:53
everywhere you want to go and I think
4:54
it's a much better way than going on a
4:56
gondola personally also you get a chance
4:58
to take great photographs um you know
5:00
lot the video I've taken in in this I've
5:02
taken basically from the the the water
5:04
buses my next tip is that Venice gets
5:06
very hot and very sticky in summer and
5:08
in Winter it gets really cold you know
5:09
it's surrounded by water and it gets
5:12
very very hot very humid and also gets
5:14
very cold so again you know make sure
5:15
that you're prepared if uh you know it's
5:18
very expensive to buy things like water
5:19
so if you're here in summer you perhaps
5:21
bring your own water and make sure that
5:22
you really do wrap up warm if you're
5:24
here in Winter the other thing to be
5:27
prepared for is what's known as the a
5:30
ala Thea ala are the floods that
5:32
basically swamp parts of Venice
5:34
particularly St Marks Square uh every
5:37
single year they have 100 of them every
5:39
year and it's basically caused by high
5:41
tides but there is 100 so there's quite
5:43
a strong chance that when you're in
5:45
Venice you might find them they tend to
5:46
be more sort of in winter time uh so
5:49
what you will find and you'll see them
5:50
dotted around the city are these sort of
5:52
risen platforms and you kind of wonder
5:53
what they for but when when it floods
5:55
basically they lay those out as Pathways
5:58
so that you can kind of walk along those
5:59
Pathways one of the best ways to get a
6:02
great experience out of Venice is to get
6:04
lost don't just stick in the main
6:05
tourist areas just go down side roads
6:07
and walk along and you'll come across
6:09
great canals great Bridges and it'll be
6:11
much quieter like for example the one
6:12
that I'm actually on right now uh it
6:15
gets so packed so busy in the busy parts
6:17
of Venice and it's quite nice just to
6:19
head down these little canals and you'll
6:21
find little uh taxis going down you'll
6:23
find little shops and one of the great
6:25
places if you head to St Mark's Square
6:28
with uh the Waterfront and you know in
6:30
front of you turn left and just keep
6:31
walking and walking you'll get to a
6:32
region called Castell that's where lots
6:34
of the locals live and there's some very
6:36
beautiful houses it's very quiet no one
6:37
really goes there but do that kind of
6:39
thing just get lost and you'll soon find
6:41
your way back CU you'll soon find your
6:42
way back to on the canals it's not a
6:44
very big city and it's very easy to find
6:46
your way back so do get lost just get
6:48
away from where the throngs are and
6:50
really then you'll get a real sense of
6:52
men and you'll get great great pictures
6:54
probably one of the best tips that I can
6:56
give you in Venice is to be an early
6:58
bird and a late bir as I mentioned you
7:01
know cruise ships come in and you know a
7:03
lot of people get up late so actually if
7:04
you want to really have benus to
7:06
yourself and see great things get up
7:08
early in the morning get out before all
7:10
the crowds and before the cruise ships
7:11
have sort of got everybody off be mind
7:13
the cruise ships will arrive 7 8:00 9:00
7:16
so it'll be a while before they get
7:17
processed and head into the city so get
7:19
up early and you know spend time there
7:21
if you're not on a cruise ship the other
7:23
thing that you do is later in the
7:24
afternoon because bear in mind most
7:26
people have to go back at their cruise
7:27
ships because they'll set sale you know
7:28
4:00 5 :00 or 6:00 so as the sun goes
7:31
down I mean Venice is very beautiful and
7:33
it's also a great time of course those
7:34
you like to take pictures you know the
7:36
morning and the evening of those of
7:38
golden hours where you get great light
7:40
and it's a brilliant time to take
7:41
pictures and it's also so much more
7:43
quiet and less crazy and uh that I would
7:46
strongly recommend and so there you have
7:48
it that's my tips on how do you make the
7:49
most of this crazy City it's an amazing
7:51
place it's oneof a kind it's a great
7:53
place to visit be in mind it's going to
7:55
be very busy it's a real tourist trap
7:57
place and you need to be a little bit
7:59
smarter how you do it so now watch the
8:01
video about the must sea and things to
8:03
do in Venice this amazing amazing City
8:07
but it's packed it's busy it's a bit of
8:09
a tourist scam so you really need to
8:11
know your way around
