As cruise ships get larger and cruising becoming more popular, cruise ports can get very crowded with cruise passengers. There can be between 15,000 and 20,000 passengers arriving at a port one any one day. What can you do to avoid the crowds and have a great time in a cruise port away from the mass of other cruising people there too? Over the many cruises I have done, over 73 at time of making this, I have found 8 great and proven ways to avoid the crowds in a cruise port. Hope these help you have a great time in every port you call on on your cruise vacation.

discovered the eight best ways to avoid
0:02
crowds in a cruise port
0:04
I'm Gary Bainbridge this is another of
0:06
my tips of charters I'm here on a cruise
0:07
and one of the things I realized is
0:09
there are a couple of ports where I
0:12
wanted to avoid crowds because I knew
0:14
there would be a lot of people
0:15
descending in one place at one time on
0:18
cruise ships so I thought it would be a
0:20
great opportunity to share with you my
0:22
eight tips on how to avoid crowds in
0:25
cruise ports starting with this one
0:28
I always check before I go on a cruise
0:31
how busy each of the ports are going to
0:33
be there's some really really good sites
0:35
that you can do it very easy so for
0:37
example the one I like to use is called
0:38
cruise timetables calm so you can input
0:41
the ports or you can input your
0:43
itinerary and check just how busy each
0:45
of the ports are going to be this is
0:47
fantastic as bear in mind some Caribbean
0:49
ports could have fifteen twenty thousand
0:51
people places in Europe like Santorini
0:53
for example these places can be
0:55
absolutely swamped depending on how many
0:57
ships are there so I always take a look
0:59
at how busy the ports are going to be
1:01
and then plan what I'm gonna do around
1:04
how busy I know the ports are going to
1:05
be so I can avoid the big crowds there
1:07
the other thing to do link to that is if
1:10
you were actually booking more in
1:12
shoulder periods so for example in the
1:14
Mediterranean if you go May June time or
1:17
September October time you're going to
1:19
find that the crowds are much less
1:21
because the land tourists are not going
1:23
to be there to the same degree because
1:25
they're going to be there in the summer
1:25
months July August the same in the
1:27
Caribbean if you go in the August period
1:29
or you even go in the December period
1:31
all those places going to be really busy
1:33
so look at the more shoulder periods
1:35
it's a really good way of avoiding
1:37
crowds check and know how many people
1:39
are going to be there my second tip of
1:41
course is a very obvious one stay on
1:44
board there's an enormous amount of
1:46
things you can do on board a ship in a
1:49
port Cruise Lines will run whole
1:51
activity programs even on port days so
1:53
there'll be loads of things to do there
1:55
will be classes there'll be talks
1:57
they'll be facilities to use there'll be
2:00
loads and loads of things to do so
2:01
you'll be able to keep busy and happy on
2:03
board a good way of avoiding crowds in a
2:06
port is go local seek out and find
2:09
people who live and work locally and ask
2:12
them for tips
2:13
and advice now there's a couple of
2:14
things you can do the simplest thing of
2:16
course is to just get a taxi iced a taxi
2:18
driver to take you to places that the
2:21
locals are going to go and are going to
2:23
be less busy with tourists there are a
2:26
couple of more organized ways you can do
2:27
that you can plan those in advance and
2:29
there's a whole load of sites which are
2:32
manned and arranged by local some of
2:34
which are just local tips some of which
2:36
will provide local guides some of which
2:38
are even free guides an example of some
2:42
of those is spotted by locals calm
2:45
global greeter Network info free walking
2:49
tours by locals comm and tours by locals
2:52
dot-com I find those sites really
2:56
helpful as a resource because these are
2:58
people who live there they've grown up
3:00
there they work there and then know all
3:02
the tricks and tips around how to avoid
3:04
the big crowds many of them provide free
3:08
tours and all you do then is pay
3:10
gratuities you give them a tip for their
3:12
time but definitely go local look for
3:16
locals to help you avoid the crowds
3:18
because bear in mind they're also
3:20
experts at avoiding the crowds in their
3:22
home towns go local another of my
3:26
favorite ways of avoiding crowds imports
3:29
is quite a simple one and that's to get
3:32
as far away from the port as possible
3:34
and to be as active as possible most of
3:38
the people on a cruise ship will come
3:40
off the ship and stay close to the port
3:43
and that's where lots of businesses and
3:44
activity set up because they know that's
3:46
kind of a captive audience so you'll
3:48
find a lot of the activities are really
3:50
focused around that spot however if you
3:53
head off in the opposite direction so
3:55
you find little local streets so for
3:58
example in Venice crazy busy but if you
4:00
actually head off in a different
4:01
direction down the side streets you find
4:03
lots of really interesting things and
4:04
you don't find all the crowds so get as
4:07
far away as possible there's different
4:08
ways you can do that I mean there's a
4:09
lot of places now you can hire bikes or
4:11
ebikes or just simply you know planning
4:14
in advance but get as far away as
4:16
possible also really important the more
4:19
active you are you'll find less crowds
4:21
so for example if you go to kotor
4:23
there's lots of people and it's very
4:26
busy but if you decide to walk up
4:28
the huge big hill behind the city the
4:31
old town almost no one does that because
4:33
it looks really scary and it looks
4:35
really active it's not actually that bad
4:37
at all if you look for more active
4:39
things there will always be less people
4:41
there so go as far away as possible and
4:43
be as active as possible as you can
4:45
that's something that I use an awful lot
4:48
and I find it's a really good way of
4:50
avoiding crowds crowds from cruise ships
4:52
tend to congregate close to the port and
4:54
where it's an easy thing to do another
4:59
great way of avoiding crowds which is
5:01
linked to that is avoid the obvious the
5:04
famous places most ports of call have a
5:10
conic and significant things that people
5:12
want to go and see that's often why the
5:15
cruisers are going there but everyone's
5:17
going to go and see that so that's where
5:19
all the crowds are going to congregate
5:21
so what you should do is look for either
5:23
tours or places yourself to go to that
5:26
are not the obvious ones
5:27
so in Barcelona everyone heads off to
5:30
the Ramblas but very few people actually
5:32
head right up back up the hill where the
5:35
Olympic Park was or if you're going to
5:37
the Grand Cayman everyone goes to Seven
5:39
Mile Beach and some of the beaches on
5:41
the other parts of the island in
5:44
civitavecchia everyone has up to Rome
5:46
there are other excursions that go to an
5:49
ancient Etruscan City of the Dead
5:51
called set of eteri so when you head to
5:53
a place don't just go to the famous
5:56
places if you want to avoid the crowds
5:58
look for the things that are off the
6:00
beaten track look at the things that are
6:02
lower down the list of things to do even
6:04
though the excursions offered by either
6:05
the cruise line or even independent
6:07
providers look at the tours which are
6:09
going to places you perhaps never heard
6:12
of because it's unlikely that the crowds
6:14
are going to be heading there one thing
6:16
linked to that is I love imports using
6:19
the hop-on hop-off bus I found a really
6:21
inexpensive way of getting around
6:23
hearing some commentary and finding
6:24
unusual places as you head around on the
6:27
hop-on hop-off bus you're gonna find
6:29
that people are getting off at certain
6:31
stops where the famous things are
6:32
actually get off on the stops where no
6:34
one's getting off because then the
6:36
crowds are going to be there but there's
6:38
going to be something interesting to do
6:40
otherwise the bus wouldn't be stopping
6:41
there
6:42
we found some great places some great
6:43
beaches some really interesting sites by
6:46
getting off at the stops that other
6:48
people aren't another really good tip
6:50
and thing that I do to avoid crowds is
6:54
timing the way the cruising works is the
6:57
minute that the ship is cleared in a
6:59
port the tour start going and people are
7:02
in a rush to get off the ship so people
7:04
leave as early as the ship docks they
7:08
all tend to then come back around
7:10
lunchtime to eat on board the ship and
7:13
often then spend the afternoon on board
7:16
the ship so the critical thing to do is
7:18
to go against that flow so for example
7:20
go out exploring in the afternoon or if
7:23
you've got an overnight stay out late or
7:25
actually get up really early in the
7:27
morning even before breakfast head out
7:29
and do your sightseeing really early and
7:31
perhaps have breakfast out the morning
7:34
is going to be really really busy
7:36
wherever you go to lunch time is a great
7:39
time to go to some of the big sites
7:40
you'll find a lot of the cruise
7:41
passengers will head back to the ship to
7:44
have their meals or people don't like to
7:46
then pay for meals out and about so
7:49
lunch time is a really great time to go
7:51
to some of the famous and big size if
7:53
that's where you want to go bear in mind
7:55
as soon as the ship arrives it's going
7:57
to be everybody rushing out on
7:59
excursions afternoons lunch times as
8:02
late as possible so if you have an all
8:03
aboard time seven o'clock eight o'clock
8:05
nine o'clock ten o'clock do your
8:07
sightseeing at the end of the day it's
8:08
also really good of course for
8:09
photography because the lights even
8:11
better so timing is really key to
8:13
avoiding crowds cruise passengers are
8:15
very predictable in the way that they
8:17
see places and sights and go against
8:20
that flow another thing that I like to
8:23
do to avoid crowds is to go on tours
8:25
that have either early access or after
8:28
closing access or to actually book
8:31
tickets which enable you to go early to
8:35
places or will give you a skip the line
8:38
entrance into a place there's a couple
8:40
of ways you can do that so some cruise
8:42
lines will have tours which have early
8:45
opening access so for example in st.
8:48
Petersburg we were able to get into the
8:49
Hermitage Museum an hour before it
8:51
opened so we'd almost finished our tour
8:53
before the big crowds arrived
8:55
and there was a slight premium for that
8:56
you can also often go online to the
9:00
places you want to go and see and book
9:02
Fast Pass entries so what I often do if
9:05
there's specific sites or museums or
9:09
really tall buildings like the Empire
9:11
State Building or whatever that you want
9:12
to go and see I will always buy the fast
9:16
pass weight so you can scoot past
9:18
everybody and go and see the site and
9:20
avoid the the lines and the crowds much
9:23
more efficient there are a couple of
9:25
resources online so for example avoid -
9:27
crowds calm which at the moment is
9:29
really focused on Europe they give you
9:32
lots of tips for all of the key cities
9:34
on how you can actually go and when you
9:36
should go to avoid crowds so look at
9:39
resources like that but cruise lines
9:41
will often offer early access and those
9:43
fast passes or use resources online to
9:47
find ways of going when the crowds
9:49
aren't there
9:50
of course even on some sites like Google
9:52
for example they often will do a how
9:55
busy things are by the hour so look at
9:58
when the crowds are going to be there
9:59
and try and plan to buy tickets for
10:01
entry or to go on tours when it's not
10:04
going to be busy it sounds kind of
10:05
obvious but people don't look I've also
10:08
learned another little trick over the
10:10
years of cruising to avoid crowds and
10:13
that's particularly in really busy ports
10:14
is go on home cooking or crafts type
10:18
tours
10:18
so there's increasingly lots of tours
10:22
where you can go and eat in families
10:24
homes or you'll go to a small artisan
10:28
bakery or cooking class those are really
10:31
small numbers very few people and it's
10:34
really a great way of avoiding crowds
10:35
because you're just gonna have a small
10:37
group of you increasingly Cruise Lines
10:39
are signed to offer those excursions
10:41
you're also able to find a lot of those
10:43
yourself so for example one of the sites
10:45
that I like to look at is a site called
10:46
eat with calm and in lots of places
10:49
around the world you're able to book
10:51
meals home-cooked meals or cooking
10:54
classes with people who live locally so
10:56
it's a great way of avoiding the crowd
10:58
because some of them will only take 4 or
11:00
6 people some of the cooking classes of
11:02
course may be up to 15 people or so but
11:04
you can avoid the big crowds and the
11:06
busy places this law
11:08
Subway's of avoiding crowds in a port
11:11
when you're on a cruise I hope you found
11:12
this bunch of ideas really helpful I
11:14
love it if you watch many more videos I
11:17
have loads of videos of cruising tips
11:19
and advice so why don't you actually go
11:20
and watch another one of those right now
