What are the challenges, hurdles and problems exposed by the need for the cruise shutdown that cruise lines have to solve before cruising can start up again? I see 7 big challenges from the cruise shutdown that need to be addressed and solutions found before cruise lines will be able to, and allowed, to and find travellers willing to start cruising again. Do you agree, or have any to add?

what are the challenges that cruise
0:01
lines are going to have to resolve
0:03
before they can start cruising again I'm
0:06
Gary beverage this is another of my
0:08
cruising tips for travelers I want to
0:10
take a look at the seven things that I
0:12
think cruise lines are going to have to
0:14
do before they're going to be able to
0:15
start cruising again these are things
0:18
that I've seen people talk about there's
0:20
a more my own views and I thought I
0:22
would share those with you so what are
0:24
the seven big challenges cruise lines
0:26
face and have to have a plan to resolve
0:29
the first big challenge they face is
0:32
that it's not the cruise lines decision
0:34
around when they can start up again
0:36
because at the moment it's only the time
0:39
recording this we have a blanket travel
0:41
ban so in the US the CDC the Center for
0:44
Disease Control has a stage for a
0:47
category four which means that there's
0:49
no travel allowed at all in the UK for
0:52
example where I am the government has a
0:54
travel advisory which talks about no
0:57
travel indefinitely of course at some
0:59
point of time there will be a date set
1:01
for travel I do also think that cruising
1:03
will be fairly low down on having
1:06
restrictions lifted because of all the
1:08
issues that were created and publicity
1:11
of God before the and during the whole
1:14
beginning of the shutdown and the
1:15
lockdown so one of the big challenges
1:17
they face is they are not able to be in
1:19
control of when they want to start
1:21
cruising in now of course that's true of
1:23
all sorts of travels but I do think we
1:25
will see restrictions lifted perhaps on
1:26
Airlines quicker train travel that
1:29
borders a closed ports are closed and
1:31
don't see that lifting for a long time
1:33
one of things I guess we've learnt this
1:34
whole process is that the cruising
1:36
companies actually do not have as much
1:37
influence and political sway as perhaps
1:40
they thought they did and that's largely
1:42
come out through the fact that they are
1:44
not incorporated in countries like the
1:46
United States or the UK in a big
1:48
cruising portal and place like Spain
1:50
where cruises go out of and they
1:52
actually have relatively little clouds
1:54
and that really came to the fore because
1:56
it gets really realized through the
1:58
whole bailout process that both
2:00
politicians and the public thought a lot
2:03
about the fact that these companies are
2:04
incorporated in tax havens panama
2:07
liberia bahamas wherever and there was a
2:09
sense that these are not national
2:11
companies and also those who've seen a
2:12
strategic
2:13
is entirely and totally a recreational
2:16
activity so they're not in control of
2:18
when they can stop Chris again I think
2:20
that's one of the biggest challenges
2:21
they face and it's gonna be low in
2:24
priority for authorities to lift those
2:26
restrictions that's a big big challenge
2:28
the second challenge that Cruise Lines
2:31
face is cruisers have become to be seen
2:34
as not good for public health and
2:37
relatively unsafe and unpredictable so
2:39
cruising was always seen as this great
2:41
safe way to travel
2:44
unpack once move around of course what
2:46
happened during the whole build-up to
2:48
the shutdown is it was seen a risky
2:50
place to be from a health perspective
2:52
that actually the viruses could spread
2:55
quite quickly because of the nature of
2:56
the people were contained it was also
2:59
seen as very unreliable because of
3:00
quarantine so people were worried about
3:02
being able to get home they were also
3:04
then worried about how they would get
3:05
home and all the risks and dangers and
3:08
stress are being quarantined far away
3:10
from home so they have tooth big
3:13
challenges to face first of all this
3:14
hostility from the lawmakers politicians
3:16
ports we even saw ports that have relied
3:19
historically or certainly earned a huge
3:21
amount of money from cruising and cruise
3:23
passengers becoming very hostile if you
3:25
take a look at Florida for example we've
3:27
got the three biggest cruise ports in
3:28
the world they were very reluctant to
3:30
take in ships that was had issues on
3:33
board they started to bring in
3:35
regulations where they were talking
3:36
about the Coast Guard not being
3:38
available to medevac or evacuate crew
3:41
and passengers that cruise ons had
3:42
organized it much more themselves they
3:44
then brought out a restriction which
3:46
said suddenly ships that were still out
3:48
or her passengers during the lockdown
3:50
the crew or passengers coming off their
3:52
ships can't use commercial flights
3:53
anymore it has to be charter flights so
3:56
quite a lot of hostility towards the
3:57
cruise line so they face that certainly
3:59
from the ports and authorities and of
4:01
course the public there's a real push
4:03
against cruising by a big sway of people
4:06
certainly what I've seen in the various
4:08
videos that I've done around the
4:09
shutdown and cruising is I've seen a
4:11
large amount of people are very hostile
4:13
to cruising and I want to see if kind of
4:15
closed down I've seen the real die-hard
4:17
cruises who keen to go back but even
4:19
when I've asked them they're really
4:20
talking about well maybe in 2021 I've
4:22
seen was half the amount of people I
4:24
asked about when they thought cruising
4:26
was sawed up when they go back
4:27
almost half of those are saying it's
4:29
into next year so people are cautious
4:31
about heading back out to sea that's a
4:34
massive big challenge the cruise lines
4:36
have to figure out how they're gonna
4:37
overcome that so I think the third big
4:39
challenge they face how can they make
4:41
sure that nobody who is infected comes
4:45
onboard a ship what we learned through
4:47
the whole process is that whatever
4:48
procedures were in place and as they're
4:50
coming up the procedures they did not
4:52
work so for example if you take
4:55
Celebrity apex this is a ship that
4:56
hadn't even gone into service just had
4:58
crew onboard which were helping to keep
5:00
the ship ready for delivery that had an
5:02
outbreak on the ship and that spread
5:05
through more of the crew on board so
5:07
even before passengers didn't come
5:09
aboard there had an issue and of course
5:10
we know the issues that happened on
5:13
cruise ships the very well publicized
5:15
issues what's also very important as we
5:17
saw outbreaks happening even when
5:19
passengers had been effectively on board
5:22
for that 14-day normal quarantine period
5:24
on ships which were stuck at sea for a
5:26
long time sailing around the world
5:27
trying to find a port one of the things
5:29
we know is that temperature checks which
5:32
is what was happening so I went on a
5:33
cruise quite close to the shutdown
5:34
however what we've learned is that's not
5:37
particularly helpful because that only
5:39
shows up once you have the symptoms what
5:41
we've learned from this virus is that
5:43
first of all it takes many days before
5:46
you actually show any sides and you may
5:47
not even show signs a lot of people who
5:49
don't actually have any symptoms so
5:51
actually temperature checks and it's
5:54
just not going to work the other thing
5:55
that Cruise Line's has historically
5:57
relied on is basic self declaration so
6:00
you fill out a form particularly lasers
6:02
used about norovirus or other places
6:04
that you travel to and it rely on people
6:05
being honest people were not
6:07
incentivized to be honest on those forms
6:10
in the old screening process because if
6:11
you put you have I've been suffering
6:13
from diarrhea or vomiting you were then
6:16
worried because you knew you're probably
6:17
going to be locked in your cabin and not
6:19
actually enjoy your cruise there was no
6:20
way that you can get your money back so
6:22
there's no incentive for people to be
6:24
honest so there's going to have to be a
6:26
whole new screening process whether that
6:28
ends up being medical certificates to
6:30
show that you're immune or vaccination
6:32
certificates when they're eventually
6:33
available or some kind of physical
6:35
screening at invocation and to make that
6:39
work crews
6:40
then also going to have to be much more
6:42
open and lenient around the embarkation
6:45
and the cancellation process so what
6:49
you're gonna have to want to do is if
6:50
you are starting to feel ill in a wrap
6:52
to the cruise you need to be able to
6:54
know there's an incentive to actually
6:55
pull out the cruise because you're not
6:56
going to be penalized and lose 100
6:58
percent or 75 percent or 90 percent of
7:00
your fare you need to know that when you
7:02
get to your vocation if there's an issue
7:03
and you're screened out medically that
7:05
you will get your fare back so I think
7:08
there's gonna have to be a whole
7:09
different way of working out a screening
7:11
process and a boarding process so they
7:13
can ensure that people you onto the ship
7:15
are not infected I'm not gonna bring the
7:18
virus on board I think this is going to
7:21
be absolutely key before ports are going
7:23
to accept cruises they're going to want
7:25
to know that the ships coming into their
7:27
port are not carrying any passengers or
7:30
crew who are likely to have the virus
7:31
the fourth challenge that I think cruise
7:33
lines are going to face is how are they
7:35
going to make sure that once a cruise
7:38
embarks that a virus is not imported
7:40
from a port if you think about it when
7:42
you head out on a cruise and you get
7:44
into a port you head out into the port
7:46
you're going to be going on tours you're
7:48
gonna be interacting with vendors in
7:50
stalls in shops loads of people where
7:52
you go tourist sites whatever so of
7:55
course there's a real risk that
7:56
passengers or crew quite innocently
7:58
aren't interacting I'm gonna bring it
8:00
back onboard the ship now on an average
8:03
seven-day cruise it is still possible
8:04
and so on gets it early on that you
8:07
could have symptoms and signs later on
8:08
in the cruise which then of course
8:10
triggers all sorts of problems so the
8:13
big challenge I think for the cruise is
8:15
how they're going to be able to make
8:16
sure that they can keep the ship free
8:18
from virus as they start calling on
8:20
ports and I don't know what this is
8:22
gonna mean but they're gonna have to
8:23
think around how are they going to do
8:25
that whether it's certainly when
8:26
cruising starts again they're almost
8:28
going to have to go to no port cruises
8:30
or only go to private islands where they
8:32
can control things much more tests much
8:34
more but it's a big big challenge to see
8:36
how they're going to wrestle with that
8:38
of course there's a couple of things
8:39
we're seeing and I've seen some stuff in
8:41
fact today that I was recording this
8:42
from some of the cruise lines again ting
8:45
cruise lines for example which a
8:46
StarCruiser dream cruises they also have
8:48
Crystal Cruises without looking at the
8:50
whole process once we will embark so
8:52
scrapping for example
8:54
self-service at buffet having only
8:57
served stuff at the buffet
8:59
rigorous cleaning protocols you know
9:01
lifts being cleaned every two hours
9:03
Cavan's being wiped down multiple times
9:05
equipment being wiped down multiple
9:07
times so think there's going to be
9:08
massive big changes and that all has to
9:10
be put in place before cruisers are
9:11
going to be able to get approval to
9:13
start sailing again one of the other
9:15
things that I think they're going to
9:17
have to reassure people on is the whole
9:18
air conditioning systems and whether
9:20
that's actually a way that it spreads
9:22
because airborne nature of the way that
9:24
the virus is spread and whether air
9:26
conditioning actually exacerbated
9:27
particularly relation to the diamond
9:28
princess one of things that really stuck
9:30
out to me and again ting discussion
9:33
document they head around what they're
9:35
changing is they did talk a lot about
9:36
air conditioning and how the air
9:38
conditioned air ball didn't air from
9:39
outside I wasn't recycle there because I
9:41
think they realized that both for
9:43
passengers and I don't know whether
9:44
that's true for regulatory there's a
9:46
real concern around the efficiency and
9:48
safety of air conditioning rightly or
9:50
wrongly so those are things I think that
9:52
are really going to be fundamental the
9:54
whole onboard process and how they're
9:56
going to reassure make everyone
9:58
confident that they're not importing the
10:00
virus in one pour taking it to another
10:02
port and I don't know how they're gonna
10:04
solve that but I think that's gonna be a
10:05
big big challenge to solve I think the
10:08
fifth area and challenge they need to
10:10
face is how are they going to reassure
10:11
passengers and also put in place better
10:14
procedures and ways of dealing if there
10:16
is some kind of breakout I think one of
10:18
the things they're gonna have to do is
10:20
relook the whole Medical Center for
10:22
example so medical centers on cruise
10:24
ships are designed really to basically
10:26
triage and do basic sort of help deal
10:29
and bring medical situations under
10:31
control and as soon as I get to the next
10:32
port they basically will get people out
10:34
into the hospital if they need more
10:37
treatment so the idea is to come
10:38
stabilized and keep people going what we
10:40
discovered of course during this whole
10:41
process is ships have to have much
10:43
better or very different medical
10:46
facilities those that can deal with
10:48
actually people who need much more care
10:51
ventilators or whatever they need to be
10:53
able to quarantine people much more in
10:54
the medical center and also probably
10:56
need much bigger medical centers even on
10:59
pretty big ships the medical centers
11:00
aren't that large because they don't
11:02
normally have many patients of course
11:04
that changed or did change during the
11:06
whole
11:08
breaks that happened on those few ships
11:10
that where it happened I think also the
11:12
whole way of dealing with an outbreak
11:14
and the relationships with ports so they
11:16
don't find that they're constantly
11:18
locked out of ports as we saw in the
11:20
outbreak and reassuring people that if
11:21
there is an outbreak on board that
11:23
people aren't at risk of being stranded
11:25
at sea in quarantine having able to get
11:27
off ships because I see a lot of cases
11:30
people have contacted me saying one of
11:31
their big reservations about going
11:33
cruising again is that they're worried
11:35
that if there is an outbreak there then
11:37
stranded for weeks on end can't go back
11:40
into ports and all the complicated
11:41
things that happen that also implies and
11:44
I think cruise ships are going to have
11:46
to have a much more sophisticated and
11:49
thorough way of planning ahead in terms
11:52
of of these potential outbreaks so for
11:55
example we saw in some cases in the
11:58
run-up to the whole lockdown some
12:00
governments were sending repatriation
12:03
flights to help get passengers back home
12:05
governments our base said that will not
12:07
be the case moving forward this is an
12:09
unusual situation so I think the whole
12:11
way of dealing with an outbreak both on
12:14
board the facilities getting into port
12:17
having regions with ports around
12:18
hospitals people go to or facilities so
12:21
if there is an outbreak things don't
12:22
happen and deteriorate in terms of what
12:25
happened on board and what also happened
12:27
in terms of getting not getting into
12:29
port as happening that whole run-up to
12:31
the big global shutdown one of the
12:35
biggest challenges I think facing cruise
12:38
lines certainly for the next year is how
12:40
to actually operate and fill ships when
12:43
all the passengers are basically locked
12:45
out of cruising in the run-up to the
12:48
outbreak all governments of sending the
12:51
major crusing governments strongly
12:53
recommend the people over 70 didn't go
12:55
cruising in the lockdown simply are also
12:57
being encouraged to stay at home right
13:00
the way through for many many months and
13:01
it's very unlikely that even if and when
13:04
cruises is allowed to start operating
13:06
that governments are still going to
13:08
recommend cruising to the 70s what you
13:12
have to do now if you're over 70
13:13
although it's not happening because of
13:15
the shutdown at the moment what you had
13:16
to do and it's still applicable is if
13:19
you're at a seven do you have to get a
13:19
medical certificate
13:21
saying that you can cruise so
13:23
restrictions on seniors traveling
13:25
anywhere in the world whatever form is
13:26
gonna have to be lifted then secondly
13:28
what documentation or what they're going
13:30
to need before they can travel is gonna
13:33
have to be absolutely simple and clear
13:35
to do that is a massive issue because
13:36
there are many cruise lines that rely
13:38
very heavily on seniors and many cruise
13:41
lines have lots of passengers in their
13:43
70s and 80s river cruising for example
13:45
lots of ocean liners that for much of
13:47
the year they have a much older profile
13:49
and that is potentially locked out those
13:52
people are probably gonna be very
13:54
nervous of traveling or even not
13:56
encouraged to travel or even big
13:58
restrictions on traveling I think your
13:59
travel insurance and they their founders
14:02
but lots of pressure on not to travel so
14:04
how can they cruise when a major major
14:06
part of their audience is not going to
14:09
cruise for a long period of time
14:10
probably not until this vaccines another
14:13
big challenge they Cruise Lines are
14:14
going to face is passengers being
14:16
willing to travel because they can't get
14:18
travel insurance now what we found with
14:20
travel insurance is there's two critical
14:22
things one is that travel policies do
14:25
not cover pandemic related incidents so
14:29
everything that's been going on and any
14:31
new thing that breaks out is not going
14:34
to be covered by travel insurance so
14:36
that's the mass the mass editions the
14:37
cruise lines have to accept that if
14:39
there is some issues they're going to
14:40
have to cover a lot of those costs and
14:42
secondly there may be more and more
14:44
challenges or very very high premiums if
14:46
you are buying travel insurance that
14:47
involves cruising already when you book
14:50
travel insurance you need to make sure
14:51
that it does have cruising cover because
14:53
they are potentially some really big
14:54
costs if you fall ill not related to
14:58
panic you fall ill will you to be
14:59
evacuated from a ship or you need to be
15:02
repatriated as quite of costs involved
15:03
with that whole process so sometimes as
15:05
a an extra premium so people are going
15:09
to be very nervous to travel without
15:11
travel insurance covering non pandemic
15:13
stuff as well as what happens if things
15:15
break out and is a pandemic one of the
15:17
solutions may not have been the cruise
15:18
lines are gonna have to build some kind
15:20
of guarantees and insurance into their
15:22
fares covering whether it's pandemic
15:24
related stuff or non pandemic related
15:27
stuff so for example in the UK saga
15:29
cruises they actually build insurance
15:31
into their fares because they have
15:32
traditionally
15:33
had an old audience because they target
15:35
fifty-plus but they've had many people
15:37
in their 70s and 80s that struggle to
15:38
get travel insurance as it is even
15:40
before all of these issues so I think
15:42
there's a lot of challenges that cruise
15:44
lines have to solve to really get the
15:46
authorities on board governments on
15:47
board and ports on board before people
15:50
are going to be willing to let people
15:52
embark ships and set sail around the
15:54
world do you have any other thoughts in
15:57
terms of what the challenges of cruise
15:58
lines are going to face before they
15:59
start cruising again please feel to come
16:01
in and have a discussion and of course
16:03
try and keep it as friendly and civil
16:05
and good as we can keep the discussion
16:07
it's good to hear what people think if
16:09
you want to find out much more about
16:10
cruising I've loads more videos about
16:11
cruising both in the short term the long
16:13
term and of course if you're looking at
16:15
inspiration for future cruising once we
16:18
passed all of this and the challenges
16:20
are solved I have loads more on my
16:22
channel so why don't you watch another
16:23
one of those right now
