From Fox 5, it's time for a good night, New York
0:07
Good evening, I'm Crystal Young. And I'm Ryan Christopher. Welcome here to Good Night, New York
0:11
Crystal, we have an amazing show lined up this evening. Okay. But I feel like tonight we're in a bit of a party mood, you know what I'm saying
0:17
Oh, what do you mean a bit? We're in a party mood. All right, we are in a party mood straight up
0:21
That's because last night on the show we were talking about New Yorkers and their sleep patterns
0:25
And New York is the third best city to live in when it comes to getting a restful sleep
0:29
Which sounds like, really? Crazy. How could that be possible? A city that never sleeps
0:33
Well, there's a nightclub down in Miami. It's called Eleven. And now Mayor Adams, apparently, he's open to the idea of bringing Eleven here to New York City
0:40
And he was on Andrew Schultz's podcast to chat all about it. I hope you haven't been Eleven in New York
0:45
I spoke to some folks. We may be rolling out. Oh, wow. Yeah, no, we need a 24-hour district
0:53
The last thing we need to yell, New Yorkers, go to sleep. Go to sleep. We need that
0:57
Because then you have illegal after parties and you don't want that. Right, right, right. It's crazy
1:01
It's a disaster we don't have an 11. It is, brother. So as far as the 11 nightclub, the multi-level 24-hour downtown Miami nightclub opened back in February 2014
1:14
Leonardo DiCaprio, Kendall, and Kylie Jenner are frequent guests. And the club has hosted parties for the likes of Snoop Dogg, Derek Jeter, Nicki Minaj, Post Malone
1:25
What? Oh, my God. The names go on and on. So here is the $64,000 question
1:30
Does New York really need a 24-hour nightclub? I think we both agree on this
1:34
Our answer is yes, we do. We'll help you open it. I'm just saying, now listen, I almost went to the one in Miami for my bachelor party
1:41
Okay, I love the almost. What do you mean by that? Well, the beginning of the bachelor party, I said, you know what
1:45
I don't want to do any of those crazy clubs. You can insert the word before club
1:49
You know what I'm talking about. And then by the end, I was like, you know what? I'm down for whatever
1:53
And then my one buddy was like, I told my wife no strip clubs on the trip. I was like, oh, apparently nobody's having fun this time
1:58
But I heard that. Was that his voice when he said, I am unable to attend with you if you go
2:04
Pee Wee Herman was my groomsman, apparently. But, you know, this is one of those clubs where they have, like, multiple levels
2:09
There's a dance club. Then there's, like, a strip section. Then you can have dinner there. I mean, there's, like, so many activities all happening at once
2:15
So I feel like this would be great for New York City. I feel like I have enough buttons on button to go, like, right now
2:20
Is there too much chest hair? No, no, no, no. I love those little chest hair
2:24
Okay. Let's put them away. No, no, no. Come on. Let it all hang out
2:28
Okay. Yeah, why not? All right. It's 11 o'clock at night. How about you, Chris? I mean, it'd be fun
2:31
I think New York is the city that never sleeps. We always say we do it bigger
2:36
We do it better. So bring it on. Yeah. All right. It'd be a lot of fun
2:40
Party at 4 a.m. That's like the one they're talking about bringing casinos to the city. Exactly
2:43
I don't think it's going to bring much more crime. You know, I mean, people are looking for fun stuff to do, especially when it comes to tourism
2:49
I agree. And this would only add to it. All right. I get up at 4 o'clock, so do you
2:53
So maybe we can just go to the club and just keep it pushing. Why not? Right. Hey, we can sleep there or never sleep
2:58
One eye open, hair sticking up, whatever, don't judge. Right. Wouldn't be much different from what we already show you every night here
3:04
But speaking of sleeping, a woman who seemingly works 24 hours from acting, executive producing, and directing is our next guest
3:12
This is exactly how I like it. Two olives, extra dirty. God damn it
3:17
How the hell did you know? I'm always. I am delighted. And pissed off at the same time
3:28
Well, our next guest is currently in Survival of the Thickest. I love that title
3:32
On Netflix. She's also starring in and executive producing Desire, a temptation story
3:38
You have to say it like that. Desire, which I'm very white voice, which premieres on Lifetime on April 19th
3:44
All right. Thank you for the very white voice. We appreciate that. She's a longtime actress, both film and TV
3:49
Also a director. We're talking about Miss Tasha Smith. Welcome here to New York, Tasha
3:53
Welcome, Tasha. Thank you for your time. It's so good to see you. Fabulous in your sweet donut
3:59
Chef said, I told Chef he looked good. He said, I know. Well, so do you
4:05
I know. I know. All good. Congrats on all the recent success
4:10
I mean, the first show here, I first heard about the series. What was your first reaction
4:14
Honestly, when I read the series, I was told about it through Michelle, and I read the material
4:19
and I was like, this me, okay? I've got to be this woman. Honestly, I love Marley
4:25
I love Marley Mavis and Khalil's relationship. I love all the love storylines that we have going on
4:32
I love how diverse the show is. It's so much fun. And not only is it fun, but it's funny
4:39
It's so funny. But it has heart. What was it like doing your first kind of intimate girl-on-girl
4:45
Did that make you nervous? Honestly, I was not nervous because of Jerry, to tell you the truth
4:50
I directed her on a show called Harlem. And while I was directing her, right, I love Harlem
4:56
And I was like, I want that in my scene partner. And then I got a chance to get that with Jerry Johnson
5:02
I was so happy to work with her. She's so lovely and she made me feel so comfortable
5:07
And she taught me a lot of things. I'm sure she did
5:11
I didn't believe it at that. Yes, yes, yes, yes. And did you teach her a thing or two when it comes to directing
5:17
Because I know that you directed two episodes of this series as well. Yes, I got a chance to direct her again in this
5:22
And you know I can say that I taught her anything but I showed her a lot of my process I guess you know and she enjoyed working with me as a director So for her and I to be able to have a chance to be scene partners that was wonderful
5:37
Honestly, we rehearsed, you know, it was just a wonderful experience with her
5:42
Gotcha. Now, I love people that don't stay in their lane. Did you really want to direct
5:47
Like, what is it that you learn about being on camera directing and vice versa
5:51
I feel like it's helped me be a better actor. And also, like, I taught acting classes for about 20 years
5:58
Oh, my. I'm an acting teacher. I have an acting school called TESOL. And my school would be a place where a lot of directors would come
6:04
writers would come. I would talk with directors and prep them on their work, you know
6:09
and what they were about to direct. So I said, I need to do this myself, you know
6:13
And so I went, and I went to USC for a summer program
6:17
and then directed my short film. And now here I am. Right
6:21
Several episodes of television later, I've been having the best time. We got to talk about Desire
6:27
Oh, let's do it. A temptation story. Desire is such a fun movie
6:31
I mean, Kendra is a wonderful character. I've never gotten a chance to play a character like that before
6:36
But what she goes through in this movie, I feel like is going to resonate with so many women
6:41
Because so many women, they will jump into a relationship so fast without allowing themselves to take their time, investigate the relationship
6:49
You collect these red flags in relationships. You could be dating. You get a red flag
6:54
You collect it. You keep going. You get another red flag. You collect it
6:58
And keep going. Instead of allowing yourself to acknowledge that red flag and possibly get out of that relationship to save you time and money
7:07
Yes. It's like, what is the red flag for? Not to collect for you to go, okay, wait
7:12
Like, right. Exactly. Let me think about this. What does this mean? I'm going to get more of this down the road in a relationship
7:16
I hope women look at this, learn something, and take their time when it comes to relationships
7:22
Take some notes. Like, be hopeful, but be intentional and investigate. Just investigate
7:29
I like that. Dig around a little. You know what I mean? Because some men, they'll present their best self
7:34
You know what I mean? And sometimes with us women, if we're lonely, if we're dealing with, like, past traumas and abandonment issues
7:41
we'll end up embracing relationships because it looks like love and safety
7:45
but then if you allow it some time you discover it's not it could be a hidden agenda so when you
7:51
see this story with kendra and malcolm it's interesting and it gets dangerous great energy
7:57
oh thank you back at you thank you yeah we appreciate it thank you for hanging out with us
8:02
gotta come and sway though yeah you know i had to put on my blue suede
8:08
All right, Crystal, it's time for a little bit of golf. You ready
8:16
I am so ready. Ooh, four, watch out. With legendary Masters Golf Tournament underway earlier today in Augusta
8:23
Crystal and I, we thought we should get into a little golf in spirit ourselves. Let's head out onto the Lynx
8:27
Yes, that's right. We ventured to one of the five Iron Golf's six locations here in New York City
8:33
to have some eats and some drinks and some swings. Now, one of us was better than the other, but I'll let you guess who
8:40
Take a look. Crystal, this food spread is getting us ready for the Masters
8:47
And you're eyeing this one right here. I am. I am. I think it's because I've never heard of anything like this
8:53
I mean, pimento, yes, but then a jelly, and it's popular, and people love it
8:58
Let's see. Let's see. Let's see. Let's see. Let's see. Get in there. Pimento cheese and jelly. What do you think
9:04
I think I like it. You said you also wanted the brisket and I wanted that, but I'm going to be a gentleman here
9:09
You keep stuff in your face and I'm going to try a wing. How do you like that? That's a kind co-host
9:14
That's what you do. You know, be a gentleman about it. Oh, these wings. I can hear the crunch
9:20
Have you tried the balls? I don't have the balls to try the balls
9:26
Yes, I do. All right, so we're about to throw down here in this golf simulator here at Five Iron
9:33
I've golfed a few times in my life. Crystal, this is your very first time ever? No, I'm golfing no times
9:37
I'm still chewing my food, yet I feel ready. And you're holding that thing like it's a, like not a golf
9:42
You're about to hurt somebody with that thing. Put it down before you're hurt. All right, so, you know what
9:47
I don't really know what I'm doing, so let's get the help of a real pro. We got Sean here. Coach Sean, you're going to break it down for us
9:52
I golf like once a year maybe. No problem. What should we do? Give it a couple of swings and then critique it or you tell me
9:57
How about you get into your golf setup for me right now? Grip looks pretty good
10:02
Set up a little bit. I'd like to feed a little closer together maybe. Okay
10:05
And what we actually like to say is we like to kind of let's stand Paul real quick. So good
10:10
We want to bend from the hips. Okay. So you're going to feel your hips kind of kick out a little bit
10:14
Like a squat. Yep. And your knees are a little flexed just like that. Perfect. Good
10:18
All right. And then, yeah, sure. Take me a few swings right now. Excellent
10:23
Perfect. There it is. Watch that shot. Look at that. There you go
10:28
Hole in one. Perfect. How about that? Nice. Let's go. Come on, Sean
10:32
Good job. Okay, so you got me a slightly different clubs in the one that
10:37
Ryan pulled out why I have this one so this is just the ladies 9.9 right here. Okay, so it's just the ladies flex is just a
10:43
little bit lighter even easier to use. All right, let's first start with trying to hold. Yeah
10:50
okay so your left hands are going to go they say on top of the golf club to give me a left It for them hand And you going to just put it right there And what we like to say is you hold it with your fingers Oh Okay Yeah Yep you doing great there
11:01
And then we turn this right over just like that. Wrap your hands right around there. Good
11:06
Perfect. Yes. Okay. And now you're going to bring your right hand in. Okay
11:10
Same kind of concept right there. Wrap it right around. Okay. Give me this thumb and put it right here
11:14
Okay. Perfect. Okay. And you slide those kind of close together. Oh, got you
11:18
Excellent. Okay. Excellent. All right, I feel like I got a good grip. Good. I have a good grip, not on life, but on this club
11:24
Okay. And then you're going to go shoulder-width apart with your feet. Okay. Beautiful
11:28
And that ball's going to be right in the middle right there. Okay. Excellent. We want to rest this club right down
11:33
I feel like I have a weird form. Why am I like this? No, you're doing good
11:36
Okay. Okay. All right. Now give me a half step closer. Okay. Perfect. Right there
11:41
My nose is, I want to scratch it, but I don't want to move my hand placement. Spread your feet out just a little bit
11:46
Good, good, good. Okay. Okay. Now, the goal for swinging. Yeah, okay. We like to say we try to take a wide form of our arms on the golf club and bring it back this way
11:56
And then as we come through, boom, we're going to hit the grass and point out that way
12:01
Got your back foot turn with you as well. There you go. So you can get into the golf pose
12:06
Okay, we want to get into the pose like this, right? Yes, got you. Okay. Excellent. All right
12:11
So you want to try to give it a go? All right, here we go. One, two, three. Nice, good try
12:47
I'm awful. I'm going to take my day job and my night job
12:53
I'm sorry I was so bad. Somehow we made it out alive. Nobody got hit in the face with a club
12:58
Absolutely. You know what? God always gives you something, and apparently my thing ain't golf
13:02
Apparently not. I'm not about to be Tiger Woods. Maybe putt-putt, though. Maybe that's our next adventure. Okay
13:08
All right. Maybe I should just stick to the talking lane. Could be. All right, but still ahead
13:12
Maybe you want to start a franchise like your own five-iron golf. Yes. Okay, so maybe you could be an owner of a five-iron golf
13:18
There you go. That'd be cool. We're going to tell you about a brand new venture. Yes, that's right
13:21
It's sort of like the Zillow for franchising. It's called Franzi. We're going to explain when Good Night New York comes right back
13:32
In this current economy, not only do most people have a full-time job, but a lot of
13:37
them have a side hustle. So whether it's their own small business or even investing in something else, you know
13:43
you got to keep that ball rolling. Yeah, and that's why there's this new company. It's called Franzi. It just started, and now it's kind of like the Zillow of franchising
13:50
and its goal is to create one million entrepreneurs, and joining us to talk all about it is the founder, Alex Smirznack
13:57
Welcome to Good Night New York, sir. Yes. Thank you for having me. I'm happy to be here
14:01
Well, thank you. I didn't know if you were going to just be like, hey, you guys want a franchise
14:05
Congratulations. Yes, exactly. Maybe not that, but you're helping so many entrepreneurs
14:11
and this is a great way. How do people get started? Do they need the money up front
14:14
How does this all work? So I think we were actually just talking about it a second ago
14:18
I think a lot of people think of McDonald's or Subway when they think of franchising, right
14:22
It's these big, expensive concepts. But what people don't realize is there is a franchise for everything
14:28
It's 8% of our country's GDP, and it ranges from a company called Card My Yard
14:34
which is those, like, you know, Happy Birthday Ryan, you know, yard signs that are in
14:39
That's $10,000 to get into all the way up to a social school. That's $5 million to get into
14:43
There's everything in between Hilton's a franchise, home services franchises, Orange Theory's a franchise
14:48
It really touches everything, and there's something for everyone. So how does Fransy work
14:54
If someone says, you know, I have X amount of money, and I don't even care what the franchise is, but I want to get into this business, do you help guide them
15:02
You know, what do you do for them? So a number of things, as you mentioned at the beginning, is Fransy is kind of like the Zillow for franchising
15:09
So you go there, and you'd say, hey, I'm in New York City, or I'm in Charlotte, North Carolina
15:13
I've got $200,000 to invest. And then we have you answer all of these kind of curated questions about yourself
15:18
And then we use AI to match you with a handful of the 3,000-plus franchise concepts that are out there
15:25
And then we provide you with an expert coach to hold your hand through that process of, you know, why is this a good brand for you
15:31
What hesitations do you have about this one? Let's iterate that list again, all the way down to helping you get financing and then become a franchisee or an entrepreneur with that brand
15:40
Nice. You actually left Ernest & Young, correct, to start this business
15:43
I served my time for a year and a half. You did your thing, but I mean, were you nervous when you first made that jump, leaving like a 9 to 5 and then starting this
15:50
Incredibly. I mean, I remember I was at dinner with my parents, and they're like, you shouldn't quit your job
15:55
You went to school, did a great school for four years, and you got this job at a big four
15:58
You made it. I was like, it doesn't feel like it. I think like a lot of Americans, the 9 to 5 wasn't cutting it for me, and I just didn't feel as excited or as fulfilled
16:08
And so I had had a little stint in college doing a laundry business, you know, undergrad
16:13
And I learned more doing that than any class I took at Wake or project I was on at Ernst Young And I was just drawn towards I got to do this again So I left EY to start another laundry business I couldn stay away from the dirty clothes Yeah apparently so Are you still doing it
16:29
Can you wash our laundry tonight? We are not in New York yet, but we're in the 20 other
16:34
20 guys. I'm sorry. I can't help you. Yeah, okay. If you send your dirty underwear to LA, I'll try to help you
16:40
We'll never see him again. Don't ever send your dirty underwear anyway. I have one more question before we go
16:45
Do you ever have people that don't have enough money for a franchise and then you're like, hey save up and get back to us is that ever an issue I'm glad you asked so
16:53
there are franchises that are again 10k to get into but we also have a portion
16:56
of our marketplace that pairs really good operators with capital partners so
17:01
if you went you said look I've run three McDonald's before as a manager but I
17:05
don't have enough capital to build my own we'll partner you with investors I'll
17:09
say hey crystal I'm gonna back you in this journey you'll be a sweat equity partner but now you actually have equity in the business versus being an employee
17:15
of it. So there is an opportunity for everyone. We want to make entrepreneurship accessible
17:19
for everyone in America. I love it. So they won't say, eat a happy meal and get back
17:23
to me. No. Okay. Thank you. Great, great, great, interesting idea. Continued success with it. I feel like
17:29
you are helping a lot of people. Thank you. I appreciate it. Online. Franzy, Alex, we appreciate your time
17:33
And coming up, I don't know if you're hungry, Alex, but we got some seafood coming up. So we're not talking about just any
17:39
seafood. We got oysters, we got caviar, we got lobster. Stay if you want
17:43
What more do you want? It's all coming up next on Good Night. We'll be right back. All right, well, if you love oysters
17:51
if you love seafood, you don't need a reason for the season to enjoy them, but right now, a warmer
17:55
weather, it's right around the corner, and we're talking oysters, cocktails, we're talking about
17:59
lobster crystal, everything is on the menu tonight on Good Night New York. All the things
18:03
I love. Trust me, oysters taste even better, seafood taste even better on a historic boat
18:09
that's docked in the Hudson. I'm talking about Grand Banks. It is grand. It's back for its 12th season. Joining us is culinary director, Kerry Heffernan and CEO
18:19
Alex Pincus. Gentlemen, welcome to Good Night, New York. Thanks for having us. Great to see you guys
18:25
Yeah. Grand Banks is a beautiful setting. It is great for a sunset, but great at any time
18:31
And the food that you guys have bought, I mean, we are so ready. So let's talk about it. We're so
18:36
excited. It's our 12th season. We have these incredible different shellfish, lobster, crabs
18:41
shrimp, oysters, we even have some live scallops right here. Live. And I'm going to give you guys a live scallop
18:50
bump. Give me that fish. What exactly is a live scallop bump
18:55
That's what I put a scallop here. And then look at this caviar
18:59
Oh, come on. Which is that worth? Let's go. That is like
19:05
47 years. It's expensive. Oh my gosh. Hold on. We got a little Meyer lemon on top
19:13
Oh, it's a good thing I have a big mouth. There you go. This is a big schmear. You guys got to take one with us, too
19:18
Come on. All right, so here we go. All right, come on. Yeah, well, let's all bump. We all bump in. Cheers, Crystal. Okay
19:22
Boom, boom, boom. Boom, boom. Here we go. Three, two, one. All right, all right. Mm
19:27
Ooh, I got all mine. Thank you. Mm-hmm. Thank you to our friends at Pearl Street
19:32
Wow. Yeah, thank you to them as well. So tasty. That is good. That was so delicious. We got to let that marinate for about two minutes, and we'll be right back
19:38
Back here on Good Night in New York for more fun. We'll be right back. I'm done. All right, it feels like summer right now because we have Chef Carrie Heffernan along with Alex Pincus
19:47
They are here from Grand Banks, and we are about to enjoy more scallops
19:51
And these scallops actually have eyes? Yeah, if you can look here, they actually have 40 eyes on each side
19:57
Who knew? It is so cool. All right. And they move along out of your way if you're trying to catch them
20:01
All right, don't ever try to get over on a scallop because he's like, I see you
20:05
And I see you. With my 38th eye. Well, you know what? Don't try it. I see these lobster rolls right here
20:09
Can we talk about these? We've got to go right into the lobster. Oh, yes, yes. Oh, with caviar at the end
20:15
Are you serious with this? This is how we do it. Come on. We need drinks, too
20:19
Oh, we do. We do. We do need drinks. Let's distribute. Thank you, Alex. What are we sipping on here
20:23
A little bubbly for everyone. Thank you. This is a beautiful, bubbling rosé. Rosé on a boat
20:29
It's the way to go. Okay. It's the way to go. That's the whole premise of what we're doing. All right. All right. And wait a minute
20:33
We have two bottles of something here. Oh, this is our 10-year house-made rye whiskey
20:38
Oh. And that's our boat on the cover. So we serve this in-house
20:42
And only in our venues I love it How do you get people to leave? It's really tough
20:46
That's one of our biggest problems Okay, all right, gotcha Don't rock the boat That's right
20:50
Okay, I want to taste it Good luck kicking us out It's delicious Cheers Oh my gosh, excellent, excellent Cheers
20:56
All right, now If somebody wants to book an adventure On Grand Banks, how do they do so
21:02
Okay Go to our website, crew.fun Very simple All of our waterfront venues are there
21:09
Sorry, I'm eating a lobster. It's really good. C-R-E-W, crew? Yep. Crew.fun
21:15
That's another delicious restaurant. You're the head chef there as well. Absolutely. We have Holy Water
21:19
We have all these great restaurants. You have Drift In, all these great restaurants. Open it up. Do you ever sleep? I'll sleep on a boat
21:26
Sleep on a boat, I guess. Okay, but if he's a New Yorker, you know it's quality sleep. That's right
21:30
Only the best. Cheers, guys. Cheers. That's right. To Grand Banks, to summer, to warm weather, to seafood, to all the things
21:37
