Gas leak on Upper West Side after high-pressure line struck, FDNY says

Following more breaking news, this time out of Morningside Heights, where a gas line has now been struck, several buildings are being evacuated

Let's get right to the scene and Fox Vice Meredith Gorman. Meredith, what can you tell us from where you are

Teresa, we just pulled up to the scene about 20 minutes ago, and as soon as I stepped out of the car, actually before I even stepped out of the car

The smell of natural gas was so strong for blocks and blocks

We walked out of the car, and then the sound of—it almost sounded like a jet engine

It was so loud. People walking by, a lot of Columbia students, people trying to just enjoy this beautiful day

plugging their ears because the sound was so loud. Now, that sound is now gone, but there are a ton of emergency response vehicles here at the scene

for what they're calling a major gas leak. Now we're here on 122nd Street and LaSalle Street, but we're hearing that the call came in around 1055 this morning

There was a report of a high-pressure gas line struck. Con Ed's here at the scene trying to shut down the leak, and evacuations are underway

You can hear police behind me yelling at people not to go up on the street behind me here

as they're really making sure that people evacuate the scene. 20 units have responded and the operations are still ongoing. The good thing, though, Teresa

we're hearing right now, no injuries have been reported. Again, we don't know how many people

have been evacuated. But again, this is a really busy area and a lot of people seem to be confused

about what's going on. There is an entirely enormous emergency response scene, firefighters

walking around in full gear. So we'll continue to get more updates. We'll give them to you guys

as they come, but it's definitely a developing scene. The good thing is the smell of gas
