Hello friends, welcome back to the channel. If you're new here, my name is Richard and I'm the owner of the fishkeepinganswers.com website

So one question I frequently get asked is, can goldfish eat bloodworm
0:11
And the answer is yes, bloodworm make a fantastic food for goldfish, both fancy goldfish and regular common goldfish
0:19
So the bloodworms we feed our fish, they're not actually worms, they're the larval stage of the non-biting midge fly
0:25
and they have been fed to goldfish for decades, a long time, they've been a staple food
0:33
So typically goldfish do find bloodworm pretty much irresistible. Bloodworms make up a fantastic
0:38
part of a balanced diet, they're high in protein and they're particularly good for goldfish which
0:44
are underweight or if you have a fish which has been ill and won't eat they can often be
0:49
encouraged back into eating by feeding them bloodworms. For me personally when I have new
0:55
goldfish in quarantine when they're being treated with medications to make sure they're free of
0:58
parasites and ick and internal tapeworms etc I will often only feed them bloodworm
1:06
So typically bloodworms are available in three different forms to feed to our goldfish You can buy them live you can buy them frozen or you can buy them freeze dried And truth be told they all equally good for the fish
1:21
Now, typically, in my experience, live bloodworms tend to be the least desirable. They're typically
1:26
the hardest to come by, unless you have a local store that stocks them. They are hard to store
1:32
you need to buy them, bring them home and feed them to your fish. And also there is that chance
1:37
of bringing in disease or parasites with the bloodworms. For me personally, frozen bloodworms
1:42
is the best way to feed my goldfish. You can buy them in cubes or you can buy them in larger slabs
1:49
and typically I'll drop one or two cubes in here or you might just break a bit off of a slab
1:54
and feed it to your goldfish. You don't need to defrost them first, you just drop the cube in
1:58
and it will naturally defrost in the water. The fish will either bite at it, take its small chunks
2:03
off or they'll wait for it to defrost and wait for the bloodworms to fall out and they'll eat
2:09
them then. And then finally, there's freeze-dried. Freeze-dried are the easiest to store. They just
2:14
live in the cupboard with your other fish foods and whenever you're ready, you just sprinkle a few
2:19
in and your goldfish will relish them They do love freeze bloodworms So people will then typically ask how often should you feed goldfish bloodworms And I will feed my goldfish bloodworms three or four times a week usually in frozen form I feed them as part of a
2:34
balanced diet so I also feed my goldfish pellets, I feed them flake food, I feed them other frozen
2:40
foods such as daphnia and mosquito larvae, went for a minute there, but as part of a balanced diet
2:49
Bloodworm can be fed several times a week in my experience. So there are various advantages and disadvantages to the three different types of bloodworm
2:57
Live bloodworm, they work really well for encouraging fish that are reluctant to eat
3:02
because as you drop them through the water column, they wriggle all the way to the bottom
3:07
and that typically encourages a feeding response even from the most reluctant fish
3:11
As I say, the disadvantage of live is the potential to bring in pests and diseases
3:15
but you can tip the live bloodworm into a very fine net, rinse them and that will reduce the chances
3:22
The advantages of frozen bloodworm in my experience are it's easy to keep a freezer full of cubes
3:28
and whenever you want to you just pop a single cube out and drop them in. Personally I haven't experienced many disadvantages at all using the frozen bloodworm which is why I
3:37
I choose them And finally the freeze bloodworms the main advantage is they easy to store they last pretty much forever You can buy a small tub of freeze bloodworm and keep it
3:48
in your fish food cupboard for months and months certainly, not a problem at all. There are people
3:54
who say you should soak your freeze-dried bloodworms first before you feed into your goldfish
3:59
Typically I just drop a few in at a time and they absorb the water pretty quickly
4:03
often before the goldfish have a chance to gobble them up. Now if like me you love to
4:08
geek out on a subject, I've written a full article on feeding goldfish bloodworms. I'll put a link in
4:14
