When a Staffordshire Terrier walks through the city, of course on a short leash next to the owner, some fearfully bypass him, while others respect his powerful body and confident gait - this is truly a born fighter and well-formed athlete.
Dogfighting was once a great pastime. And in order to breed the ideal American fighter that could withstand a long fight, with strong legs, a powerful bite, and a lower pain threshold, it took cynologists to involve many breeds.
The ancestors of the Staffordshire Terrier were popular in the XX century English Terrier and English Bulldog. Time after time certain puppies were chosen from the litters, and they were pandered to various fighting breeds brought from English, Spanish and German kennels. The main qualities of the dogs had to be a well-developed dentition, a strong and powerful physique that could stand a collision with the enemy and hold a balance, and the size not below 45 cm.
After dogfighting was officially banned, the belligerent qualities of the Amstaff (another name for Staffordshires) were reclassified. Now they mostly serve as a guard, bodyguard, shepherd, and also Staffordshires appear in families who prefer a pet that is formidable and strong.
