Villainy Inks review: Better than Streaking Grime?

0:02
enamel watches have been around for
0:05
quite a while and when it comes to
0:08
painting a miniature in a grim dark
0:10
style the king of the jungle is AK
0:13
streaking Grime but a new player has
0:16
entered the chat fill in the inks and
0:18
anals if you're new to them can be
0:20
reactivated I'm a fan of the reductive
0:23
method so you cover your miniature in
0:26
the grime and then with a thinner take
0:28
it back off leaving it in the recesses
0:30
and you can get streaks over like armor
0:32
panels and stuff it's really cool I've
0:33
taken a few pointers tips and tricks
0:35
here and there but really I am just bang
0:39
average there's going to be some awesome
0:41
creators that I'm sure are going to get
0:43
incredible results with these but how am
0:45
I going to do I'm going in blind is
0:50
blind adjacent I've used some enamels
0:54
before but I've never used villain inks
0:57
before let's see how we do are these new
0:59
inks better and easier to use than the
1:02
alternative that's my focus of this
1:04
video how do they stand on their own but
1:07
how do they rank against existing and
1:10
established competitors so I got sent
1:12
the star set from element games it
1:13
contains seven new enamel washes in a
1:16
variety of colors you've got your Grime
1:18
your black and brown and then a green
1:21
turquoise and Crimson the packaging
1:23
bottles and labels all look really cool
1:26
definitely really fitting into that sort
1:28
of grim dark aesthetic the lids can be a
1:30
bit of a f to get off it can feel like
1:32
you're just spinning forever but if you
1:33
grip the bottom bit give it one good
1:35
twist and then and then you you'll be
1:37
away built into the lid is a pet and
1:40
I've got some issues with this I can
1:43
understand why they've done it it's cool
1:46
and there is a design language when it
1:48
comes to inks that I think they wanted
1:50
to fit into just like the vast majority
1:53
of all oil paints come in a tube all of
1:56
the inks that I've got come in a glass
1:58
bottle with a built-in pipet my issue is
2:02
villain inks aren't your traditional
2:04
inks everything else on the table here
2:06
is acrylic water-based and flows super
2:10
well villain inks are enamels they Gunk
2:13
up they build up a residue in the bottle
2:15
when they're not in use so I found a lot
2:17
of these Petes are blocked out the box
2:21
they just don't work opening the bottles
2:23
you can see the buildup and in the pet
2:26
too which is a bit of a pain comparing
2:28
this to stre and grime we've got screw
2:29
got the gunk is still there but it's not
2:32
as dry it's easier to to move about
2:35
easier to use the pot essentially the
2:38
darker colors of the villain inks were
2:40
the worst offenders with none of those
2:44
Petes working I've got some plastic pets
2:46
lying around that I used to help me with
2:48
airbrushing dipping that instead no
2:50
blockages nice seems like an appropriate
2:53
time to bring up the cost of all these
2:55
things on element games streaking Grime
2:57
is
2:58
$449 a bottle of villain inks is
3:02
$12.99 more than double the price but if
3:05
you get the full Starter Set there is a
3:07
a nice discount on that but enough about
3:10
how to open them I'd love to never say
3:13
the word pet again let's see how they
3:18
perform summer in the UK at least is
3:21
finally here I'm usually an autom or
3:24
winter man myself with a fine collection
3:27
of woly jumpers but with t-shirt from
3:30
into the am like this one I've managed
3:33
to update my wardrobe and I can't wait
3:36
to wear the new range of graphic T's
3:38
that are dropping this month there is a
3:41
whole new bunch of designs we've got
3:43
space we've got cactuses we've got even
3:47
space cactuses which is awesome and the
3:49
best part is there is a Fourth of July
3:52
sale which is sitewide and you get
3:55
30% off so if you want a fresh new look
3:58
this summer
4:00
Lord knows I need one there's new
4:02
graphic T's new tank tops if you fancy
4:05
getting your shoulders out personally I
4:08
love into the am clothes I wear them all
4:10
the time I first got introduced to them
4:13
when they first sponsored the channel
4:14
and then I bought a bunch of my own as
4:16
well I think the cut and the quality is
4:19
great I wear them in a ton of videos
4:21
even when they're not sponsoring us I
4:23
think they're awesome and if graphic
4:25
te's aren't your thing they do a Basics
4:26
range that come in a load of different
4:28
colors as well and I think they're
4:30
smashing so if you want 30% off some
4:33
premium graphic te's plus an additional
4:36
10% by using our link just click the
4:39
link down in the description or the pin
4:42
comment and thank you for into the am
4:44
for sponsoring this video let's get back
4:47
to painting these are heavily marketed
4:49
towards Grim dark and I think death
4:52
guard are just that so I took a box of
4:55
Terminators and got started I've been
4:57
Keen to getting some airbrush practice
4:58
so I primed everything Brown and went
5:00
over the top with some Tamia flat white
5:02
when it comes to Paints the grime really
5:04
does dull down the color quite a bit
5:07
this Terminator used to be more yellow
5:09
streak and grimed him and now he looks
5:11
orange so I'm going in with brighter
5:13
greens than I normally would I picked
5:15
out gut Ripper flesh and Gilly Jew I
5:19
forgot some of the contrasts cover
5:21
insanely well and just covered up all my
5:24
airbrush work with the gut rer flesh
5:27
oops Army painter however worked exactly
5:30
as I wanted it to so nice one speed
5:32
paint blacked out the details put in the
5:34
rest of the base coats again a bit
5:36
brighter than I usually would I usually
5:38
do metallics afterwards to keep that
5:41
shine there but wanted to see how
5:43
everything reacted under Grime so put
5:45
them down too went brighter with them as
5:48
well going silver instead of gunmetal
5:51
and then putting a DOT of silver into
5:52
the brass just to brighten it up a
5:54
little I also gave the fleshy bits a
5:56
really light wash of crimson we're
5:59
finally here it's Grime time drinking
6:03
Grime first as that's my Baseline to
6:05
test from goes through an airbush really
6:07
well covers insanely well adhering to
6:09
the miniature all over bright to dark
6:13
just like that and then just getting a
6:15
cotton Bud dipping it into the enamel
6:17
thinner and rolling it over the
6:20
miniature and taking off the grime stays
6:23
in the recesses and you can leave
6:25
deposits on the armor is Ace I'm going
6:27
to use goons Grime now as a direct
6:30
comparison it seems a lot thinner
6:32
through an airbrush it's pulling on the
6:34
mini a bit more but I got coverage all
6:37
over eventually although a bit speckly
6:41
in case it's an airbrush issue I painted
6:43
on some too and that thinness definitely
6:46
persevered it was taking a while to dry
6:48
so in the meantime I got stuck into some
6:50
of the additional colors on offer
6:52
Crimson first for the skin you can see
6:55
how gooey it was which made me kind of
6:57
think I probably hadn't shook the
6:58
bottles in enough and that might have
7:01
been my issues with goon's Grime so I
7:04
shook the crap out of this one it
7:07
improved and we got started went on
7:09
really well the color is really sexy
7:12
taking it off with spirits and bringing
7:14
back that bright undercoat I think it
7:16
looks Ace and gross but mainly Ace rust
7:19
up next I was worried shaking the bottle
7:21
wasn't enough so stuck the back of a
7:23
brush into the bottle and stirred up all
7:25
the gunk at the bottom I definitely
7:27
think an agitator would be a welcome
7:29
addition here this did go on well
7:31
however it's quite dark but it looks
7:33
decent I'm trying the turquoise as a
7:35
verree type thing painting it over the
7:37
brass I did struggle with this a bit I'm
7:40
not sure why but in the recesses and
7:42
around the bolts and stuff it does look
7:44
nice so I'm going to go back to the
7:46
grime now and give this more of a go I
7:49
gave up waiting for it to dry or it
7:51
dried a bit shiny and use the same
7:54
removal techniques most of the darkest
7:58
Brown sludge seem to pull
8:00
off of the miniature on the base which I
8:03
don't know if if that's good or bad some
8:05
of that specklin remained but trying to
8:07
remove that I just ended up taking away
8:10
all of the grime I think this one's on
8:12
me for not stirring and shaking enough
8:15
so I stuck the back of the brush in
8:16
there again and shook it for 6 minutes
8:20
the website recommends a Vortex mixer
8:23
but I didn't want to use one as I don't
8:25
think it's something many painters will
8:27
have and there are 20 to £ 30 investment
8:31
on top of an already premium priced
8:34
product brushing on again airbrush on
8:37
another and here are the results of
8:39
goons Grime brushed on airbrushed on and
8:43
then streaking Grime as a direct
8:45
comparison through an airbrush as well
8:47
goons Grime does just seem a bit lighter
8:50
in application and then I thought
8:52
compare the rust two I've got a couple
8:54
of AK Ross paints that are enamels so
8:57
gave them a go as well I also broke out
8:59
dirty down rust because if you're making
9:02
a paint that says rust dirty down is
9:04
kind of the king of that one at the
9:06
moment right then I'm calling it quit
9:11
with the
9:12
enamels I'm going to tidy up all of this
9:15
crap Chuck a couple of highlights on
9:18
these base
9:20
them and then we will get on to some
9:23
conclusions
9:26
[Music]
9:38
so now we're on to our spinny results
9:39
time most importantly I've had fun and
9:42
I've come out the other end with some
9:44
cool grimy death guard first I've ever
9:45
painted so I am pretty
9:52
chuffed side by side in a blind test I'm
9:55
not sure I'd be able to say that the
9:57
middle one here is streaking grind and
9:59
the rest the goons Grime the left here
10:02
is goons and then the right is streaking
10:04
Grime they look gross they look grimy so
10:07
I've achieved my goals preg Grime I
10:10
thought I preferred the speed painted
10:12
Marines but the gut Ripper flesh being a
10:14
bit brighter has helped more pale and
10:18
Grim which is quite death guard isn't it
10:21
Grime feels like Grim dark cheating and
10:25
it's awesome I ended up using the three
10:27
different rust effects AK dirty down and
10:29
then sector rust from vill inks sector
10:32
rust is dark kind of like the turquoise
10:35
was I think I'd like it to stand out a
10:37
little bit more I did really quite like
10:39
the AK rust and then the the dirty down
10:42
is is obviously Awesome by Far and Away
10:44
my favorite of these villain inks is
10:46
Crimson never used anything like that
10:48
before and the results were smashing
10:50
it's the most unique of the paints I
10:52
think and maybe that's why I really
10:54
really liked it so moving on to my final
10:57
sort of conclusions and opinions I found
10:59
these temperamental to use I'm sure lots
11:03
of other creators got great results but
11:06
I've definitely struggled a little bit
11:09
now I get that hobby products can be
11:11
like this and that is absolutely fine
11:15
I'm just a huge fan of stuff that just
11:19
works out the bottle so I could pay more
11:22
than double the price I could store the
11:25
bottle sideways which has been
11:27
recommended to me by a few people I
11:30
could keep a pin on hand to unblock the
11:32
Petes if they get gunked up I could buy
11:35
a Vortex mixer or I could heat it and
11:39
shake it to within an inch of its life
11:42
and after doing that I'm sure that I'd
11:44
probably be able to get better
11:46
results
11:49
or I could just buy streaking Grime
11:53
overall I really like the Miniatures
11:55
that I've painted and that is the most
11:58
important thing
12:00
I'd highly highly recommend watching as
12:04
many videos as you can of people using
12:06
this stuff don't spend loads of money
12:09
and dive in and think yeah see if it
12:12
works I'm glad I've done it so I can
12:14
tell you not to these do seem like
12:17
they're more versatile B streaking Grime
12:21
like as the set you've got all of the
12:22
different colors and I think the Crimson
12:26
like the blue and the green they're the
12:30
the strongest ones in the set cuz
12:32
they're less unlike any other product
12:34
that you can get I think the more you
12:36
put into these the more you will get out
12:39
of them I think I think is is my
12:42
conclusion at the end and there we go
12:45
unsure if I provided any help to anyone
12:47
with this one but hopefully it has been
12:49
somewhat useful those were my
12:51
experiences of playing with vill inks
12:54
and that is that see you in the next one
13:00
here we go
