commission painting: Are we good enough for the job?

0:00
what is commission painting well for
0:01
those of you who don't know commission
0:03
painting is where you get paid to paint
0:04
someone else's stuff
0:06
potentially make a living out of it as a
0:09
hobbyist sounds great War daddy
0:11
Miniatures who have sponsored this video
0:12
approached us to pimps and Miniatures on
0:15
a commission basis so I want to see how
0:16
I cope as if this was my bread and
0:19
butter work so commission painting can
0:21
peachy cut it now as of yet I have zero
0:23
clue what I'm gonna be painting but Pat
0:25
has some surprises 52 miniature
0:28
surprises
0:30
that was a coincidence hey Alex
0:32
all right let's see what I've got
0:35
nice that was beautiful
0:39
so we have oh some frames
0:43
death Court of Krieg Squad of 10.
0:46
fun and then oh my days just lots of
0:49
things but we're out to okay so oh I'm
0:52
seeing metal figures already excited
0:54
it's in a bag oh rolled up bag so I've
0:57
got three figures in here let's have a
0:58
look come here you uh Talon Talon gaunt
1:02
classic is that gone no it's not good I
1:04
think it's just a
1:06
now it's just a common sauce I've got uh
1:09
ah oh oh praetorian
1:12
cup of touring heavy weapons another guy
1:15
sitting down so I've not actually ever
1:16
stripped a model in my life so I'm gonna
1:18
be using some of the stuff that you gave
1:19
me
1:20
um
1:21
and some I'll say I'm seeing Talons so
1:24
far and I'm seeing praetorians or at
1:26
least a pretorian heavy weapon Squad so
1:28
I'm already excited what victorians I
1:30
have never ever ever got around to paint
1:32
a Victorian I did some audience but what
1:35
I'm seeing here is first rank fire
1:37
second rank fire oh my God
1:40
oh my God so excited we've got a we've
1:42
got them ranking up and kneeling down
1:43
and shooting I think I took a grenade oh
1:46
no he's given orders
1:48
excited oh my God oh my God I'm gonna
1:50
cut like a toddler in a minute look at
1:53
that guy
1:54
sweet
1:56
okay folks it is time for some maths
1:58
some peachy maths so bear with me so
2:00
right three pound per model I'm gonna be
2:02
breaking that down to a model every 20
2:04
minutes I've got 51 models so 51 times
2:09
by 20 leaves me with 1020 minutes okay
2:13
now we all know the 60 minutes in an
2:16
hour so I need to times that number by
2:18
60 divide that number by 60.
2:21
don't times it by 60. now we all know 60
2:25
minutes in an hour so I need to divide
2:26
that number by 60 to see how many hours
2:28
I need to spend on it so doing that
2:30
that's left me with 17 hours I've got 17
2:33
hours on these 51 foot troops I've also
2:36
got a contemptor which is eight quid
2:38
that contemptor is about an hour's worth
2:40
of work so 18 hours I've got to spend on
2:43
these pretty good a decent amount of
2:45
time it seems I've also got to take into
2:47
Basin and other stuff as well but 18
2:49
hours to get this done
2:52
I'll nail it be fine so ideally I want
2:55
to come under one to make profit for
2:57
myself but I also want to put enough
2:59
effort into people buy them and be hired
3:02
again because hey business that's how we
3:04
work
3:05
um but I also need to factor in times
3:06
like packaging I need to base them put
3:09
some decals on there's also if they're
3:11
metal models they will chip so I need to
3:13
Varnish them as well so there's all
3:14
these little things but 18 hours seems
3:16
like plenty of time so first up we're
3:18
going to paint the contempted
3:19
Dreadnought now I decided to go with
3:20
yellow because I really like the idea of
3:22
painting a contempted general yellow and
3:24
I'm going to use pink undercoats with
3:26
white sprayed over because that is a
3:27
really nice way of doing yellow so this
3:29
is going to speed up the process and
3:32
hopefully make money so starting with a
3:34
pink undercoat with a white dusting over
3:35
the top of it
3:36
I'm now going to move on and pick out
3:38
all the black details so this is like
3:41
things like all the working parts the
3:43
metals guns gun casings so if I'm making
3:46
mistakes I can easily tidy back up with
3:48
a little bit of pink and white and for
3:49
this I'm going to be using black Legion
3:50
then for that cool yellow effect I'm
3:52
going to get some Imperial fist I'm
3:53
going to coat that all over that armor
3:55
as well I'm doing this at this point
3:57
because black is a bit harder to recover
3:59
so if I did the black first like I said
4:01
I could tidy back up with a bit of pink
4:02
or white if there's any sponges and then
4:04
do all the yellow then for some speed
4:06
kind of effects of highlighting I'm
4:07
going to dry brush over that yellow
4:09
using some pale sand gives it a nice
4:11
roughness as well
4:12
[Music]
4:14
then I'm going to chip that yellow I'm
4:16
going to use some chocolate chipping
4:19
paint I know chocolate chipping paint
4:21
chocolate chips mmm I'm just gonna be
4:23
working my way around sponging that on
4:25
[Music]
4:29
any silver details just going to rush
4:32
through those with some dry brushes of
4:33
gunmetal
4:34
[Applause]
4:36
[Music]
4:38
then I'm going to wash over those
4:39
Silvers using toggle raid shade
4:41
[Applause]
4:44
for the lenses on the contempt I'm just
4:45
going to pick those out with a little
4:46
bit of white
4:48
then apply some Frost Art to give it
4:50
kind of a glowy effect
4:52
so the contemptor came into around about
4:54
an hour's worth of work so I probably
4:55
lost a little bit of money technically
4:57
in this but I'm going to get all that
4:58
back when I do like the batch paint for
5:00
the rest of the stuff but I went with
5:01
that yellow scheme now we've done that
5:02
in a previous video where we've used
5:04
pink undercoats dusted over why because
5:05
what that does when you tone over with
5:07
like a yellow ink or a yellow wash or a
5:09
contrast it kind of turns that pink to
5:11
an orange so it kind of instantly Shades
5:13
it so there's a lot of dry brush in and
5:14
this nice way of doing yellow that
5:16
really sped up that process so for the
5:18
hour's worth of work I am super pleased
5:21
with the end results of this contemptor
5:23
yes it still needs decals but it looks
5:25
really good I'm really impressed by that
5:27
if I say so myself obviously I painted
5:29
it but from a speed point of view I mean
5:31
it looks cool so next up I'm going to
5:34
jump on the entire platoon of Talon
5:36
desert Raiders I'm going to paint all 26
5:38
because there's alrahen in there as well
5:40
the captain slightly different colors
5:42
for him but I've got 25 figures pretty
5:44
much in the same color scheme so I'm
5:45
going to batch paint through all of
5:47
these and the reason for batch painting
5:48
especially from a commission point of
5:49
view is I'm actually going to save time
5:51
because I said like if I sit there and
5:53
paint one figure every 20 minutes that's
5:54
actually going to take more time so Dune
5:56
is a big group is actually going to
5:58
speed up the process so I'm going to
5:59
earn a lot of time back through this
6:01
that's the theory
6:02
so to speed this color scheme along I'm
6:04
going to be undercoating the entire lot
6:06
with xandry dust so that's pretty much
6:08
all my robes sorted out then I'm going
6:10
to heavily dry brush over using pale
6:12
sound this is going to give me a bit of
6:13
an extra highlight when I apply some of
6:15
those contrasts later on
6:27
now I'm gonna get some surfing CPA here
6:29
I'm going to apply this all over this is
6:30
mainly for the cloth but it will add
6:32
like an extra bit of shade and some of
6:33
those deeper recesses for things like
6:35
the trousers and the backpacks and stuff
6:39
[Music]
6:41
with that seraphim sepia now dry I'm
6:44
going to get some olive green I'm going
6:45
to thin this down about 50 50 so it's a
6:47
little bit watery I'm kind of treating a
6:48
bit like a contrast here and apply this
6:50
over the green trousers and also do some
6:52
splodges of camo
6:54
[Music]
7:02
then we'll get some deep Brown again the
7:05
same kind of mixture as I did with the
7:06
olive green so about 50 50 and I use
7:08
this for the leather works that's the
7:09
belts the pouches as well as the putties
7:13
for the head scarf scar I'm going to be
7:15
picking that out with some off-white
7:35
the black details such as the boots the
7:37
Guns Etc are going to be using black
7:39
Legion in some places up there gun
7:41
itself I'll thin this down a bit more
7:42
just so it runs through because I just
7:44
want it to go in the cracks more than
7:45
anything
7:50
and for all the silver details I'm going
7:52
to be picking those out with gunmetal so
7:53
that's details on the last gun and maybe
7:55
like the odd skull here and there on
7:57
like their pouches Etc
8:09
then for goal details I'll be using gold
8:15
and whilst I've got the Golder I'm just
8:17
going to go back to my contempt to
8:18
Dreadnought and pick out those bullets
8:19
because I didn't actually add those to
8:21
start off with because I knew I'd be
8:22
getting gold out later on
8:25
and for the skin just for a nice bronze
8:27
tone I'm going to be using Cork and then
8:29
I'm going to coat the whole lot with
8:30
toggle raid shade and I thin this down a
8:33
little bit as well so it doesn't pull
8:34
too much and it's not too Stark in some
8:36
of those recesses and this is going to
8:38
be my magic paint that just fixes
8:40
everything that makes it look Mega
8:45
so I've done 25 Talons uh that's the
8:48
whole platoon done
8:50
um pretty pleased with the end result I
8:52
say pretty pleased obviously I'm looking
8:54
in the mindset of three pounds a marble
8:56
here
8:57
um I've tried to work out timings like
8:59
my personal thing is 10 quid an hour so
9:02
that's 20 minutes per figure
9:04
they've all been base coat and wash and
9:07
stuff but still got like standards I
9:08
still want to like add more to them do
9:09
some with the faces but time is Muddy
9:11
when you're a tuition painter you don't
9:13
really necessarily have the luxury of
9:15
that kind of side of things so
9:18
um yeah it keeps it keeps bothering me I
9:19
keep looking I'm getting I should I
9:21
could do better I could do more I could
9:22
do more but it's three quarter model
9:23
gotta get that in my head I still have
9:26
some bits to do to out over him and
9:28
Captain
9:28
ow we'll call him out still got stuff to
9:31
do to out and then some praetorians and
9:34
then we'll base them all together at the
9:36
end but yeah I've got these standards
9:38
they may go I need to add more paint to
9:40
the models it's not quite good enough
9:42
for me and I guess that's the challenge
9:43
of being a commission painter you just
9:45
gotta let those things go and just get
9:48
them done because time is money
9:51
oh he biscuit
9:52
kind of dunking my tea first chocolate
9:55
malted milk cheers Andy man
9:58
looks like the Talon desert Raiders I'm
10:00
starting the victorians with a zandro
10:02
dust undercoat I'm gonna do the same
10:03
thing I'm gonna dry brush those over
10:05
with pale sand again this is going to
10:07
add like pre-highlights to like the
10:09
tunics the trousers ready for when I
10:10
apply those contrasts over so first up
10:13
I'm going to get some bar red and I'll
10:15
be using this across all the tunics I'll
10:16
also apply a little bit to Captain Al
10:19
um because he's got like bits of red on
10:20
his cloak and stuff now this is the bit
10:22
I'll probably take a bit of time because
10:24
it'll be super neat and try not to
10:26
splodge too much if I do I can just use
10:28
some xandroid does former pot and tidy
10:29
back up if I need to
10:32
foreign
10:33
[Music]
10:38
I'm going to apply this to the trousers
10:40
and apply a little bit to Captain Al as
10:42
well and it occurred to me the Talon
10:45
desert Raiders have some nice little
10:46
bits of color on their headdresses so at
10:48
this point it made sense just to get
10:50
some that storm fiend and add it to
10:52
those headdressers as well and just by
10:54
adding this little bit of blue to the
10:55
headdressers just makes them look a
10:56
little bit more visually pleasing and
10:58
better quality
11:00
[Music]
11:05
is to pick out those epaulettes and for
11:07
that I'm going to be using Imperial fist
11:08
straight from the pot not thinning it
11:10
down
11:14
[Music]
11:16
any black details like boots leather
11:18
guns I'll be picking those out with my
11:20
old trusty black Legion
11:23
so next up is to pick up the metallics
11:26
first up I'm going to be picking up the
11:27
silver details and for this I'm going to
11:28
be using gunmetal
11:30
then for things like the belt buckles
11:31
and any other little details here and
11:33
there I'm going to be using gold for
11:34
that
11:36
then it's cork again for the skin and
11:40
then I'm going to wash all over using
11:42
toggle rain shade again
11:44
really drench it over really pull it in
11:47
and then watch obviously watch out for
11:49
pulling too much don't don't don't go
11:51
mad so I've got my squad of temper
11:53
drawings done and the gun crew pretty
11:55
pleased them I mean I I love praetorians
11:57
I'd like to put more effort into but
11:58
Street quitter model so that's as much
12:00
love as they're gonna get next up is
12:02
going to be the commissar now
12:04
I'm getting three quid just for this
12:06
character I am not gonna go mad I'm
12:08
going to start off with a black
12:09
undercoat that's gonna be pretty much
12:10
his uniform done it's just picking out a
12:12
couple of details like Reds yellows
12:13
flesh Metals so not a lot black
12:16
undercoat is going to be the winner here
12:17
it's going to do all the heavy lifting
12:19
and a heavily dry brush over the
12:20
commissar using deep sea gray that's
12:23
just going to do all the clothing get
12:25
that all sorted I'm going to pick out
12:27
this Sash and the epaulettes with pale
12:28
sand this is in preparation for some
12:30
contrasts in a moment or two
12:32
so if the sash across his waist and I
12:35
picked that out with bar red
12:37
and for the epaulettes I'm gonna be
12:38
using Imperial fist this nicely ties in
12:40
with the praetorians as well then it's
12:42
gunmetal for any metal details I'll also
12:44
dry brush this over the gun Carriage as
12:47
well quite heavily and any gold details
12:49
and we picked out with gold I'll also
12:50
pick out the gold details on that gun
12:52
Carriage using the same color
12:54
and the skin and we're using cork again
12:56
tied up any black details with black
12:58
Legion so in case it's a bit messy here
13:00
and there and it's toggle raid shade all
13:02
over I'll also apply toggle rate shade
13:04
all over the gun Carriage now the common
13:06
cells done I think it ties in nicely
13:07
with the rest of the stuff are done so
13:08
far we're about 10 and a half hours in
13:11
uh so that's gone really well I'm really
13:12
pleased with it we've broken the back of
13:14
the troops I still have 10 Deathcore
13:16
Creek to do
13:18
um they are
13:19
a bit more detailed with I only want to
13:22
spend about 200 minutes on them as well
13:23
and so I think we'll come under I'm
13:26
fairly confident we're going to come
13:27
under which means I will make some
13:28
profit out of this project which is
13:30
great so for the death core Cree what
13:32
I'm going to do is start off with a
13:34
mechanical standard great undercoat or
13:35
only like mid-tone gray would do really
13:37
but what I'm going to be doing here is
13:39
using this again to my advantage to get
13:41
most of those great coats done then like
13:42
I've done with most of the others I'm
13:43
going to drive a shave with pale sun
13:44
again just to pop out some of those
13:46
highlights to make it a bit more
13:47
prominent then for any brown leather
13:48
details I'm going to get some deep Brown
13:50
thin it down a bit and go over across
13:51
things like the putties the belt the
13:53
little gas mask pouch the gas masks
13:55
themselves the rucksacks haversacks
13:58
satchels
13:59
but if you want to call them backpacks
14:01
then it's black Legion for boots and
14:02
gloves as well as the last gun I was in
14:05
two minds to leave the helmet blue but I
14:06
decided to do the helmet and the armor
14:07
black as well and I'll just chip those
14:09
with a bit of silver in a minute or two
14:11
speaking of the silver so I'm using
14:13
gunmetal here I'm going to use that for
14:15
all that silver details bayonets barrels
14:17
I'm also going to do some fine chipping
14:19
sort of fine just to make that armor
14:21
feel a little bit different as a
14:22
material from the leather
14:24
[Music]
14:27
now it's picking out any gold details I
14:30
felt the buttons need to be picked out
14:31
in Gold instead of silver because it's
14:33
just draws in nicely silver will go
14:35
it'll just disappear too much that gray
14:36
so gold felt right for this
14:39
I'm gonna get some storm fiend and apply
14:40
that to the trousers and the Cuffs as
14:42
well and I really like seeing this storm
14:44
theme on these death core Creed because
14:46
it kind of works well with those
14:47
praetorians because it kind of gives it
14:49
like an old-fashioned military uniform
14:51
Vibe so I was quite pleased with that
14:52
then to finish off I'm just going to get
14:54
the Mighty Taco raid shade and coat all
14:55
over again be mindful of pulling so
14:58
everything's painted so I'm going to tie
14:59
them all together with the same Basin
15:00
scheme mainly for Speed and it will just
15:02
look nice as a collection so I'm going
15:04
to be jumping onto that in a minute
15:05
that's probably going to take me about
15:06
an hour and a bit with drying Etc but
15:09
again still coming under the time I've
15:11
worked out so still making a bit of
15:13
profit here for myself so our Basin
15:15
material we're going to start off first
15:16
is with AK lunar desert and as always I
15:20
like to thin this down around like where
15:21
the feet are just so it's a bit more
15:23
easy to work around and then just pile
15:24
it on once you've applied it on go I'm
15:27
literally going to go through the whole
15:28
lot and do it as like a batch and you
15:30
probably want to leave it around about
15:31
an hour to dry I've never benefited
15:33
using the AK pots the texture pots is
15:35
they're huge and they're ideal for
15:37
basing Mass troops like we've got here
15:38
so win-win for me next up is to get some
15:42
green skin soil and apply that to those
15:44
bases this is going to give it a really
15:45
nice Mossy effect in some place I'm
15:47
playing it quite neat and then I just
15:48
get some thinners and add it around so
15:50
you'll get a different sort of visual
15:52
effect going on depending on how neat it
15:54
is in some places how thinned it is in
15:56
another
15:57
[Music]
16:00
and last of all after that I'm just
16:02
going to get some pale sand and dry
16:04
brush over and again that'll just draw
16:06
out a bit of texture and add a bit of
16:08
warmth to that color
16:09
then last of all you just need to Rim
16:11
the bases I guess
16:12
um whatever color you want I'm just
16:14
using steel Legion drab because I'm a
16:15
creature of habit there we are the Army
16:18
is done everything is based by Adam
16:21
wobble at the start
16:23
um I didn't think it was good enough I
16:24
was a bit sort of like putting my own
16:26
personal Hobby in the way and but then I
16:29
gotta remember this as a job I'm doing
16:30
this to make money and also time is
16:33
money time is precious and do I put more
16:36
time in and get paid less uh as a result
16:39
when it's all based and together it
16:41
actually looks really good I'm really
16:42
pleased with results I don't think I'm
16:43
gonna go over and edit them more to it
16:45
um I could do but then I'm losing money
16:47
and this is I guess the conversation
16:48
that needs to be had when you're doing
16:49
commission painting is you've got to
16:51
distance yourself from being a hobby as
16:53
well as being a job
16:54
um I used to do that when I was at
16:56
Workshop used to like you know this is a
16:57
job I've got to put this kind of effort
16:59
in I'm being a paid his salary this is
17:00
Hobby weirdly sometimes hobby I put a
17:02
little bit less effort in because it's
17:03
my hobby I do what I want with it but
17:05
with commission painting it's a
17:07
different bag altogether because time is
17:10
money and you want to be getting
17:12
money out of it and profit out of it
17:15
and not losing anything
17:17
um I don't know what you guys think put
17:19
some stuff in the comments what you
17:20
think about commission painting I mean
17:21
it is
17:22
it's such an eye-opener for me there's
17:24
so many things I've had to consider
17:25
whilst doing this
17:27
um you know the quality sides of it the
17:30
speed sides of it the the financial
17:31
sides of it
17:33
um so I
17:35
I'm really pleased we had the
17:36
opportunity to do this video because it
17:37
is pretty eye-opening and I as a result
17:39
will I be a commission painter that's
17:42
the question I'm gonna ask myself right
17:43
now would I be a commissioned painter I
17:45
think yes
17:47
would I do it professionally full time
17:49
probably not
17:51
I'd have less air
17:53
even less than what I've got
17:56
but I really enjoyed it and it's been
17:58
good fun now if you want to own any of
18:00
these Miniatures they are on auction on
18:02

18:04
