Hey everybody, welcome to Explain America, I'm your host Carmine Sabia and we've got
0:04
a big blockbuster story today for you that really has shaken the world of social media
0:09
in fact, two of them. But before we get started, what I need you guys to do is please hit that like button
0:17
please hit the share button, please leave a comment. Those small things really help us out and believe me, with the elections approaching
0:24
we are really feeling it right now. You know how the social media algorithms are just trying to crush any kind of conservative content
0:31
The only thing that prevents that from happening is literally you guys, that's it
0:35
So those little things I ask you to do, they are so important and we appreciate each and
0:39
every one of you that does them. So Elon Musk has apparently done a complete about face
0:45
He has now, according to sources that spoke to the New York Times, agreed to purchase
0:49
Twitter, one of the world's largest social media companies, for the original purchase
0:55
price that he had set out. Now that's amazing news and it gives us a bastion of free speech in a desolate plane
1:03
if he actually does that. Now the reasoning behind it could be that they were taking him to court for deposition
1:09
Who knows what the reasoning is, but he has done a complete about face, apparently now
1:15
wants to purchase a social media platform at the agreed upon price
1:19
And I don't know if it's a wise business decision or not, but I do know that it's a great victory
1:24
for free speech if Elon Musk does what he has promised to do
1:28
At the same time, the Supreme Court has decided to take a case brought by people who say that
1:36
online radicalization led to a terrorist murder of a family member. And what that means though is much greater in scope than just one case
1:46
Of course, our heart goes out to the people who were killed, but as far as the internet
1:51
is concerned, what they're actually taking into account is section two 30
1:56
So what is section two 30 section two 30 protects social media companies from things that you
2:03
or somebody else might say online. So let's say somebody goes on social media and they threatened to hurt somebody
2:10
Well, that's a crime, right? But Facebook is protected. Twitter is protected
2:15
YouTube is protected from having liability for that person's actions. And you have to understand why that is
2:22
There's billions of people using these platforms. There's not enough moderators in the world to cover that kind of traction and make sure
2:29
nobody's saying things that they can't say. However, a lot of issue has been paid to a lot of conservatives that say, Hey, our stuff
2:38
gets suppressed all the time and it's not fair and you're singling us out. On the other side, I've heard liberals say the same thing
2:44
Oh, you know, Facebook's all for the conservatives. They don't care about the liberals. I've heard that too
2:49
And every side, I guess, sees it from their own lens, but limiting section two 30 could
2:54
level the playing field. On the other hand, it could pretty much end social media if they were to end two 30 completely
3:02
That would be a devastating blow to social media. I don't know how it could survive that, but I think modifications could be made to it
3:10
with the help of Congress, of course, bipartisan solutions to, to make a level playing field
3:16
to make it. So somebody sitting at a desk in Silicon Valley isn't saying, I don't like that person's opinion. Nix
3:23
I don't like that person's opinion. Nix, whether it's conservative or liberal, we should all have the right to speak and
3:28
say our viewpoints, right? So that's, this is going to be a huge case
3:33
This is the case to watch. Like abortion was the case to watch last Supreme court session
3:38
This is the case to watch this Supreme court session. It is going to be huge
3:43
And the effects of this decision could linger forever and change the internet literally completely
3:49
Hey folks, I hope you enjoyed the video today. Again, my name is Carmine Sabia
