1500w Electric Bike Ride
Dec 1, 2022
I built this fast Marin ebike for a customer using a 1500w direct-drive hub motor electric bike kit and 52v 14ah battery (using Sanyo GA cells). Other upgrades include Suntour SP-12 NCX suspension seat-post, Gel saddle and Schwalbe Marathon Plus MTB tyres.

If you want to build yourself a fast DIY electric mountain bike, these kits are fairly straightforward to install, but there are a few things you need to consider:
1. It is wise to use a decent donor bike with good components - I wouldn't recommend fitting this kit to a bargain basement mountain bike.
2. If you have 8, 9, 10 or 11-speed rear cassette, this kit will only take a screw-on freewheel (7-gears at most). You may need to change your shifters and rear mech to accommodate the reduced gearing.
3. A rear torque-arm is recommended to prevent the wheel popping out of the drop-outs.
4. Make sure you purchase the correct wheel size - these kits are usually available in 26" / 27.5" / 28" wheels.
5. A good puncture resistant tyre, with inner-tube sealant as a back-up - you don't want to be going through the hassle of repairing or replacing an inner tube on one of these!
