What's up guys. Welcome back to BMX nerds. On this channel, we review BMX bikes. I answer BMX questions and we talk about all things BMX because BMX is the best sport ever. And you're watching this channel because you're looking to get into it and join all the other BMX riders around the world. And I want to do my part by helping you get into it as easy as possible. So in this video, we're going to be talking about the fly neutron BMX bike. This is going to be a review of the neutron. And inside of it, we're going to decide if this is a good bike for you. So the fly neutron
0:30
Neutron is a mid-level BMX bike. It weighs 24.1 pounds and costs $449. There are a lot of bikes out there
0:39
and so I want to go through all the nitty-gritty, all the details of this bike and help you decide
0:44
if this is a good one for you or if you should spend your money on something else. And to make this
0:48
simpler, I created a BMX matchmaker service. And all you have to do is click the link up here on
0:54
the screen. Tell me your height, your budget, your skill level, your weight. Tell me a little bit about
0:58
yourself and then I will take that information and I will find three BMX bikes that are absolutely
1:04
perfect from you. All you have to do from there is wait, check your email in about a day. It takes
1:09
me like 24 hours and then you can click one of those and then just buy them. It's a lot easier
1:13
than watching a hundred different reviews and trying to find the bike because I know when I started
1:18
out it was confusing. I bought the wrong bike and one was too small. The next one was low quality
1:24
and like I've probably bought four or five different complete bikes before I finally built up a custom bike
1:29
And if there was something like this when I started out, it would have helped me get into the sport without wasting so much time and money
1:36
And I want to do that for you guys. So let's go over some of the five common frequently asked questions about the fly neutron
1:43
The first one is how much does it weigh? Fly neutron is pretty light
1:47
It weighs 24.1 pounds. Can you upgrade it? Yes. This is a pretty decent bike
1:53
but if you decided you wanted taller handlebars or longer cranks or different tires
1:58
like everything on the bike is fully upgradable and fully customizable, so you can swap stuff out with no problem
2:05
Can you grind with the fly neutron? Sadly, no. The fly neutron does not come with any pegs or any hub guards
2:12
which are required to grind. Now, you can buy pegs and hub guards and then you can grind with the bike
2:18
But right as it comes right out of the box, you cannot because you don't have any pegs or hub guards
2:22
Finding a bike with pegs and hub guards for under is pretty rare to do so this isn a big surprise But I just want you to know this bike doesn have pegs or hub guards You have to purchase those separately
2:35
However, does it come with brakes? Yes, it's going to come equipped with stock brakes
2:41
But there's an option on the website. When you're buying the bike, you can decide if you want this bike to come brakeless or with brakes
2:48
And if you choose the breakless option, then your bike isn't going to have any brakes at all
2:52
It's going to have no brake mounts, no brakes. know nothing. It's going to be completely breakless. And I would recommend that new riders get a
2:59
bike with brakes for sure because it's just, it's a safety thing. If you are newer to the sport
3:05
you're inexperienced. Like, it's good to just have brakes so that you can save yourself if you
3:09
need to. It'll take a while, but eventually you'll learn how to slow down with your shoes or
3:14
slow down by shifting your weight around. But right off the bat, it's not a good idea to go without
3:18
brakes. And so get the braked version of the fly neutron. Okay. What kind of hub does it have
3:24
This bike has a sealed cassette hub. Now, let's talk about the sizing because there is a lot of issues when people buy a bike that's the wrong size
3:33
You want to get a bike that's the right size. It's going to make it easier to ride, easier to control
3:37
So don't mess this one up, okay? The Fly Neutron is a 20.75 inch top tube
3:43
This makes it a large top tube. The 20.75 inch top tube is going to be best for riders who are between 5 foot, 9, and 6 foot
3:52
If you're taller or shorter than this, you can ride this bike. It's going to be okay
3:56
But it's not going to feel perfect like it would if you were between 5 foot, 9, and 6 foot
4:02
Now, the style of the frame is something that's important to mention because there are other
4:06
geometries aside from top tube. You've got your chain stay length, your standover height, your head tube angle, your bottom bracket height
4:13
And if you look at this on any website where you're looking at buying it, you'll see a bunch of
4:17
different numbers. And those geometries essentially tell you how. responsive or how mellow the bike's going to feel
4:25
And so the fly neutron is a pretty neutral bike. It doesn't have a super long or super responsive chain stay
4:32
It doesn't have a steeper mellow head tube angle. Like this bike is well rounded and it's very mellow
4:37
It's very neutral. Slightly on the more mellow side, but not much
4:41
Like nothing to worry about. This bike is going to be a good balance between mellow and responsive
4:46
Now we understand the geometry of the bike. Let's talk about the quality of the fly neutron
4:52
The fly neutron has high tensile steel handlebars It has a trimali frame which means the top tube down tube and typically the head tube are going to be full chromali while the back end of the bike
5:03
is high tensile steel. It has 50% chromali forks. This is a chromali steered tube and high
5:10
tensile steel legs. It also has eight-spline full chromali cranks and semi-double wall rims
5:16
Overall, this is technically a mid-level bike, but it doesn't have full chromali like I would
5:22
expect and like I'd like to see. It's got high tensile steel bars, some chromali in the frame
5:26
some chromali in the forks. So to understand what any of that means, we need to break down high
5:31
tensile steel and chromali. High tensile steel is the more affordable option, but it's much weaker
5:37
It's way less durable. It's also going to be heavier and it's going to bend on the tubing on
5:42
impact. It's not very reliable and you can really mess high tensile steel up. Cromali is more expensive
5:48
but it's also like four times stronger. This is a lighter material
5:52
to use on BMX parts, and it's going to crack at the welds instead of bend because the tubing is so much stronger
5:59
Because of this quality, this bike is going to score a 5 out of 10, just barely putting it at mid-level range
6:06
Okay, it's just barely there. It's not a super high-quality bike, but it's also better than a lot of other options, you know, scoring 5 out of 10 in the quality score
6:16
Now, let's talk about some pros and some cons about the fly neutron. Some pros, some pros, including
6:22
the one-piece steer tube. This bike has fully sealed bearings. It's got a stronger 510 chain
6:28
510 chains are sick and they're much better than 410 chains. Now sadly it's got low quality
6:34
handlebars and the rims being semi double wall is pretty misleading. I don't like the way
6:41
they worded that. I don't like the whole concept. I wish they would just say single wall rims or
6:47
extra thick sidewall instead of trying to like fudge it and make it seem like it's kind of double
6:51
wall but kind of not. It's really mostly single wall. And I forgot to mention another pro is the
6:56
CNC machine sprocket. This is just a higher quality, lighter, cleaner looking sprocket option
7:02
And it's really rare to find on bikes that cost under $500. So this is sick. Good job, fly
7:08
Now let's talk about the style of the bike and how good it is for street, park, and dirt riding
7:13
Okay. In street, it scored a 2.19 out of 10. In park, it scored a 4.64 out of 10
7:21
and in dirt it scored a 4 out of 10 Because of the parts that are included on the bike and the geometries of those parts and the frame this bike is going to score best for park riding and dirt riding It really
7:34
isn't very good for street riding and mostly that's because it doesn't have any pegs or
7:39
hub guards. If it had pegs and hub guards, it would score up there with the park and the dirt
7:44
scores. Okay, but you can buy those hub guards and you can make it better for street. But just as
7:48
it comes out of the box, you're going to feel more comfortable riding it in skate parks and a
7:52
pump tracks and on dirt jumps. Now we need to talk about the warranty and see if this bike comes
7:57
with a warranty. The Fly Neutron does indeed come with a warranty. It's covered against manufactured
8:04
defects for up to two years. I don't know why I did three. Two years. So if you have any issues
8:09
you can contact Fly. They're going to determine if it's a manufactured defect or if it's just
8:15
you know, if you did something wrong to the bike. And if they determine it's a manufacturer defect and
8:20
within that two-year window, then you can get a new part or a new bike swapped out for you
8:25
This is important because some BMX companies are really lacking on the warranty department
8:31
Okay, so my honest thoughts on this bike are that it's not a bad option
8:35
I think the Tri-Molly kind of double-wall rims, semi-double wall, extra thick sidewall rims
8:42
And the CNC machine, Sprocket, the 510 chain, like it has some good bells and whistles on it
8:48
but the core main components, the frame, forks, handlebars are pretty low quality
8:53
and those are the most expensive parts to swap out. So if you are a heavier rider, I would recommend staying away from this bike
9:00
and getting something a little bit higher quality where you're going to find Chrome Ali in the frame, forks, and bars
9:05
If you're a lighter rider, I'd say under 180 pounds. This bike could be fine for you, and I know you can get a good deal on it if you
9:12
choose the brakeless option with the cassette and you just narrow it down to
9:17
get the cheaper option. But it's, yeah, so for smaller riders, a lighter riders, I would say this is a
9:25
good option. But for heavier riders, the quality just isn't enough for me to really recommend it to
9:31
you, if that makes any sense. I think it's a fine bike, fair price, but it's a little bit too low
9:36
quality for heavier riders. Now, there are a bunch of other reviews you can watch next, but I put
9:42
these two up on the screen because I think you'll really like them. One is the top 11 best BMX bikes
9:47
this year and the other one is a review of a bike that is very similar to the fly neutron
9:52
