Fixing a Creaking Subfloor
Jan 14, 2025
A creaking subfloor can be a nuisance, but it's a fixable issue with the right steps. First, locate the exact spots where the creaking occurs by walking across the floor. Use wood screws to secure the subfloor to the joists underneath, spacing them 6–8 inches apart along the creaky areas. For hidden joists, a stud finder can help pinpoint their location. If working from above isn’t possible, you can access the subfloor from below (in a basement or crawlspace) and use shims or construction adhesive to add extra support. Regular maintenance prevents future creaks and ensures a quiet, stable floor.
