Well, hi, everybody. It's that gratitude guy, David George Brook, with another special guest on the gratitude podcast interview regarding the pandemic. And today I have a counselor, as I call him, Ryan Colley, a good friend of mine and known him a number of years, a very sharp young man. Ryan, welcome to the podcast
0:19
Thanks, David. How are you? I am well. I'm well. Thank you for coming on board. And my whole intent and purpose on this is just to help people that maybe don't have the same drive or ideas or thoughts or whatever
0:29
about what we're going through, which is very difficult to say the least. So let me start off with this question
0:34
What is your best coping mechanism to deal with this pandemic? I think it's just keeping my eye on the end of it, right
0:44
So if you kind of look back in history, at least I do, every time that we've been through
0:49
something like this, we've always come out on the other end to be a stronger country and
0:54
or most people are better people. So a simple thing that I like to talk about, that's a simple thing that
0:59
that the idea is from my pastor at our church is that when there is, there's always order
1:05
disorder, and then reorder. So reorder is always better than order, but to get to reorder, you have to go through disorder
1:13
So right now we're in disorder, but at the end of it, we're going to be in reorder
1:18
And reorder will be better than order. And that's really what I just keep telling myself
1:23
That's really good. And by the way imitation is the sincerest form of flattery as we know So I can remember if it next Monday or the one after The Monday morning minute is order disorder reorder Oh good good good
1:36
Because we were in order, and then we had a major disorder
1:40
which is what I'm going through right now. And then we're going to come out on the other side as we reorder things
1:45
Exactly. That was perfect. And so I look for that, I think, a week from Monday or something
1:49
Great. Great. I'm glad I'm helping out. You bet. You bet. So second question is
1:55
it's certainly uncertain times too. Would you say, what are you most grateful for right now
1:59
Is it shifted from maybe what you typically are grateful for and believing in gratitude
2:04
Well, you know, in all honesty, I wrote my gratitude journal this morning, and it's health still
2:09
I mean, that's always been my big thing, is that I always start the gratitude journal by being grateful for my health
2:16
And even now, you know, it's even more of a reminder just how important health is
2:20
And it's not just that I don't have COVID-19, but it's also that I don't have any underlying
2:25
conditions, which would make me more susceptible to COVID-19. So it's just that
2:29
I mean, and then, you know, the health of my family and friends. So, no, I mean, it hasn't changed, but it's made me appreciate it more
2:38
Yeah, that's, I do think I was saying to somebody every day, I think there's kind of
2:41
a realignment of priorities. You and I both know a lot about gratitude and how it affects us, but I think some people
2:46
are maybe realigning their priorities and understanding what's really important. Yeah. You have things taken away from you, like you can't even lead your house
2:52
You start things differently, too. So we be in a guy that I know you very well and juggling a lot of balls on the go a couple of young ladies for your children and your wife and everything that you do in your law practice Any tips or thoughts or ideas for people that may not be so driven as what they can do
3:10
why they're kind of housebound right now? I keep telling myself that just to stay positive
3:24
Try to set, don't look at the big picture, but try to set small, maintainable goals
3:34
So each day, if you can get one project on or just one little thing on each case project
3:41
whatever you're working on. And at the end of the day, then take a look back and see what you were able to do
3:48
But don't focus on how you're going to run the whole marathon. Just focus on how you're going to take the next step
3:53
and you know, you take enough steps, and before you know it, you've ran the marathon
3:58
So I just keep trying to focus on those small, attainable goals. And then before you know it, that will be at the end of it, like I said, hopefully you'll come out of this
4:07
a better, stronger person and have accomplished what you hope to accomplish during this time
4:12
That's good. I like that. And I think about having flown for a number of years as a pilot, they always use the term minor course corrections
4:19
And I think that's really what you're talking about. It's not gigantic things. But even with that being said my last question is this is what are you doing now or what in your mindset right now to kind of hit the ground running when this thing ends
4:37
It's just to stay organized now and prioritize things that need to be done immediately today and
4:46
just keep pushing forward because as soon as we're able to the stay at home order is
4:55
lifted, we're all able to go back to our lives, I'm not going to be behind the eight ball
5:00
I'm hopefully going to just be right on top of it. So again, it's just doing not, you know, and I tell my wife, it's not about trying to get ahead
5:08
It's just trying to maintain and keep what you have moving forward
5:12
And you can make these big goals once we go, or you can accomplish hopefully your bigger goals when we get back to how things are
5:18
But for right now, it's just staying focused, making sure you're not falling behind and just
5:22
maintaining a positive active life. Excellent. Well, no surprise. I expected great tips from you
5:31
That's not put a lot of pressure on you, but. Well, it's because I talk to you so much
5:35
Yeah, right. Thank you. I talked to somebody, what would I have? I said
5:38
you want to do a gratitude podcast interview? What would I have to add? And I go, well, apparently not much
5:43
I guess that that's the situation. So I always appreciate that you're going to get the really, really good tips and then other people that go off on these tangents
5:50
So, well, listen, I won't take any more time. Thank you so much for being part of the gratitude podcast interview
5:55
the pandemic. Yeah, thanks a lot, David. Thanks for doing this. It really helps out
5:59
Oh, you bet. Thanks, Ryan. Take it easy, man
