This Crystal Looks Like an Alien Artifact
Apr 14, 2025
In this week’s woodturning video, I'll be turning a piece of bismuth into a hybrid raindrop with the help of some Australian mallee burl and epoxy resin. If you’re unfamiliar with bismuth, it’s a chemical element with the symbol Bi and atomic number 83. Bismuth is a post-transition metal and one of the pnictogens, with chemical properties resembling its lighter group 15 siblings, arsenic and antimony. (Though, to be honest, I still don’t fully understand what it is! Haha.)
After shaping it to the desired form, I spent hours sanding and polishing to achieve a glass-like finish.
