0:03
hello Walkers and welcome back to City walks the channel where I walk you
0:08
around and uh around cities and nature and that sort of thing different places
0:13
and point out or try to point out very interesting unique things uh this will
0:19
be a walk and talk which is my usual motus oper rendi uh and uh so yeah
0:28
forewarned we we are today in veale
0:33
Colorado and I'm going to poke around here to the corner and then duck back um
0:40
I often do uh take some wrong turns and have to double back on this one it's intentional
0:48
uh I'm going to start out with a little bit of housekeeping here it is 24° C 75°
0:54
Fahrenheit in July towards the end of July and it's about 5:00 p.m. you can
1:00
see the gondola that is inactive now but has been running all day look at this
1:07
beautiful Gore Creek down here and there's somebody fly fishing as well and I'm going to talk a little bit
1:14
as we go beautiful that is there's a little
1:20
bit of a haze in the sky that's from smoke supposedly from Canada which is
1:26
quite on fire right now they've got this wonderful bike path hiking path that
1:33
goes for miles and miles and miles and miles and miles and actually believe it goes might go from
1:41
Breen Ridge all the way over to Aspen but certainly along the veil Valley the
1:47
Eagle Valley um but we're going to duck back up here
1:52
we're starting off in the western end of the resort Center so further west you
1:58
get into some uh uh more commercial type stuff strip malls and
2:04
that sort of thing but here in lion's head uh it's a lot of condos and hotels
2:10
and fancy fancy stuff we are at about 8,000 ft of
2:19
altitude which is about 3500 more than I'm used to and
2:25
uh so I might be huffing puffing a little bit
2:36
[Music] love this little puppy
2:49
there what we're going to do I think this is the
2:54
Arabella quite nice and it's going to lead into hopefully
3:01
into a pedestrian area if I've gotten my my bearings
3:06
correctly uh and there's a bunch of shops and restaurants and that sort of thing music
3:23
Etc yeah no regrets [Music]
3:31
okay this is the back way no worries we will get to see some fun stuff a lot of people out on bikes there
3:39
are rental bikes everywhere people bring their own bikes and then people will
3:44
take their bikes up the mountain in the gondola during the day and then I and
3:51
then ride downhill so we're going to get into
3:57
some excuse me some copyrighted music here and that'll be something that may
4:04
or may not trigger some issues with YouTube but we will
4:11
see but I'm just going stop talking for a little bit so we
4:17
can have a chance to hear [Music]
4:25
me all right so we'll go into the sort of main Square of lion's head area and see some of the
4:34
fun stuff there's a big party private party here in this tent uh the other day when we arrived we ate dinner at The
4:41
Chop House which is quite good now looks like they've got uh looks like a little band setting up
4:49
restaurants and cafes and that sort of thing uh and then there's like foosball
4:56
and table tennis Etc Under the Tent
5:02
but we'll see some of these fancy uh
5:07
shops got eyasses and that sort of thing and then Sports and clothing over
5:14
here on the [Music] right all
5:23
right they've got a lot of live music here so I'm going to go ahead and say
5:30
this oh look at these kids in their jammies getting ice
5:35
cream awesome right so see the patio area
5:41
there's a uh hog and do shop right there um look at all the people out here
5:53
rentals it's crowded but it's not nearly as crowded as it is in the winter lot of people
6:00
with uh speaking different languages here it's an international destination
6:06
okay um so we are here at the beest of
6:11
discover Veil my wife who many of you know may as uh may know as traveling
6:17
mail at traveling mail.com um they brought her here so that she could write
6:23
a blog post about all the fun things to do in Veil Valley and they have
6:30
been um we've gotten to do just a ton of fun stuff we went up to the top of
6:35
mountain and uh rode over the Alpine
6:40
Coaster and went on these Mountain tubes which were super fun and we uh took
6:49
an a llama hike so we hiked with llamas and They Carried our
6:54
lunches and um then we
7:01
also oh we went to the um the symphony last night and had this amazing shuder
7:08
board uh and today we went whitewater rafting and tonight we're having another
7:13
dinner we ate at the Chop House the first night it's been great there is oh we went to the uh ducked back down here
7:20
towards the creek so we could follow that uh we went to the skiing and Snowboard
7:26
Museum which was free and they also have a free shut shuttle bus all through town
7:32
uh it's been just a lot of fun um hanging out and dining and
7:37
enjoying all the fun things to do here and discover at Veil so traveling mail
7:43
will be writing a blog post so keep an eye out for that um and it will have a
7:49
ton of the details of the fun stuff that we've done I think there's a neat bridge over
7:56
the creek over there and I said this is Gore Creek uh one of the things we saw and maybe
8:01
we'll see again tonight was people tubing down this
8:07
Creek you can rent tubes and it's really shallow and uh Meandering it looks Rocky
8:13
but the water's not very fast so it's it's pretty tame but really fun looking
8:19
thing to do um I mentioned the mountain biking and I there's just a ton of stuff
8:26
to do here but one of the things I like is it's just so quiet and um we've seen all sorts of kids running
8:32
around and they're getting a lot of free rain and to be out here in the trees and
8:39
the river and the forest and there's lots of open space for them to run around and it's just really
8:46
Pleasant we're back on that bike path um I have
8:52
filmed a couple other walks here in Vale over the years so if you want more of
8:59
the lme head area check those out um check out here come some bikers
9:06
check out Citys virtualers.com to find those very easily where the walks are
9:13
organized by walk time and length there's also an art walk or an
9:20
art Trail here lots of public art the sign reminded me of that but also the flowers there are just so many wonderful
9:27
flowers Melinda has been ecstatic with all the flowers we'll see a lot more as
9:34
we go here's somebody with some of the rental tubes it's like a
9:40
dad action is a hi there Beast of Burden
10:10
we uh the the whitewater rafting was down the valley um Downstream on the Colorado
10:18
River I think it's the Gunnison Canyon but it's we ended up just past Glenwood
10:24
Springs and we had a great time I think that was there was a bunch of companies but but um I think we went with
10:31
Timberline super fun super great people shared an raft with a family from
10:38
Texas they were super
10:47
nice over to the left is the veil Public Library I love all the rock and wood
10:55
that's been incorporated into the design of things
11:24
looks like something new is being built here wonder if that's going to be a
11:30
private residence or condos kind of commercial building
12:07
this big building here I believe is the Denver or the veil Health Center
12:13
um basically the hospital Bale Health hospital and The Insider tip oh here's
12:20
some of these flowers uh is that it has a Starbucks in the lobby and
12:25
apparently it has one of the best views of any Star Starbucks ever highly recommended we haven't been
12:32
up there yet but look at all these awesome
12:53
flowers wow this looks like a private resident
13:08
Here Comes one of the free buses I guess there's three lines there's one that says in town and that
13:14
will take us take you all the way out to um well to the east side of
13:20
town where the Gerald R Ford Amphitheater is and where the Betty Ford
13:27
botanical gardens is
13:51
quiet I wonder I'm always curious about real estate prices the prices for these
13:57
homes off to our right must be
14:14
substantial there's the access to the lobby the other side is up much higher
14:20
the main entrance um
14:31
it's kind of a retro house it looks like it's been here for a while kind of nice or Multiplex
14:49
maybe lot of people using regular bikes but also ebikes just to get around I
14:55
love these daisies I think these are daisies this place good Lord
15:02
um which I think probably makes a good good it's probably a really good way to
15:08
get around since it's such a compact place
15:14
um parking is at a premium uh they do have some either some
15:20
public parking garages uh and I don't I don't know what the cost is on that I have parked there
15:27
before maybe I might mention that in my other walks
15:38
place I want to thank our patreon supporters for your contributions um
15:45
really do appreciate it it makes uh these walks that much more
15:51
sustainable um and it really is a huge vote of encouragement to me
16:00
and I appreciate it so thank you very much if you want to learn more there's links down in the description for
16:06
Facebook coffee and patreon I think patreon is four bucks five bucks a
16:12
month so nice little garden
16:34
going to go over here cuz there's an art installation off to the left the remedy
16:41
Bar spaceside Cafe I think it's the Four Seasons um nice little garden but then
16:47
there's these three bears made out of wire which is pretty cool somebody's put flowers in their eyes and ears those
16:54
weren't there yesterday [Music]
17:02
we are going to get into the main Bale Center the sort of center of the resort
17:15
bit it's kind of got a the whole area at times has a
17:22
Germanic theme or uh Alpine theme which you'll
17:29
see part of that is with the window flower boxes and balcony flower boxes
17:35
you see that over there a lot and then sort of just the design elements as well this hotel up here on the corners
17:43
is the sonen Alp sonen Alp Hotel s o NN n a l
17:49
p really nice place um my wife went took
17:55
we went into the lobby they supposedly have a bar but it's closed for the summer season
18:00
and I can see how awesome it would be in the winter it's just got this big thick
18:06
walls and leather seats and um kind of low ceilings fireplaces everywhere it's
18:16
amazing looks like they might be open today
18:31
some folks eating fondu out
18:48
there I know it's uh a pre-planned community in Resort but I do like these
18:55
pedestrian areas Studies have shown that when you pedest Trea and I as a section
19:00
of City it actually increases uh foot traffic even though that seems to go
19:10
against uh not common sense but seem the the Assumption I think I think a lot of
19:17
business owners are worried with all legitimate uh concern about losing
19:24
traffic when the cars can't come in close but apparently it is the
19:32
opposite well this is the alpen Rose we're going to eat dinner there later tonight apparently That's a classic old
19:44
location look how look how these stretch up and up and
19:51
up very densely built in here which is great right better than sprawling
20:00
Galleries and jewelry stores and we'll be coming up on sort of a public area another wider public area
20:09
that I think is a they turn into a skating rink in the winter but now it's
20:14
sort of an activity area
20:27
[Music] free bus again people waiting to get
20:36
on here we go guess this is East
20:44
Meadow they've got a bunch of cornhole tables out there places
20:50
to uh places to sit down and have a
20:55
cocktail or something the chasing rabbits to restaurant over there is apparently quite nice you're going to
21:01
want to make a reservation uh Veil Brewing Company DEC
21:08
Etc but this is a a Hopping area for
21:13
sure these fancy places looks like they got a bit of a market going
21:18
here and I think if we went just up here we
21:24
would get up to the h Ski and Snowboard
21:30
Museum but I think we're going to walk around this way see the
21:36
market some of these other buildings and I think we go to the
21:41
covered bridge over here so you can access the slopes via
21:48
the over by lion's head smells good over here
21:54
too or you can come over to this side and access the
22:24
slopes oh there's something that smells cinnamony smells
22:32
wonderful cinnamon roasted nuts that's what it [Music]
22:42
is smoked salmon and
22:49
Loy okay so what we're going to do is we're going to cross the creek again oh my goodness that smells good
23:05
can see some more tubes over there and kids that have been playing in the creek
23:10
and I believe they can raise those there's some metal stuff right at that rapid that they can raise up to make it
23:15
more of a rapid and in June way in the distance well in the distance you can see a couple more people tubing maybe um
23:24
but they do some sort of Whitewater event through town in June some sort of
23:32
competition see you can you there's a nature path on the left side and then more of a developed path on the right
23:39
we're going to continue up here and sort of do a loop we'll go up here make a left and
23:46
then cross back over to the other side on the covered bridge that's my plan anyway we'll see how how it turns out
24:09
[Music] got view of some of the mountains the
24:16
mountains around here are just stunning man they are big the flowers on this
24:23
place you know my love seeing all the docks the dogs
24:28
around too it's fun and you might hear a really high pitched Trill I don't know
24:35
if the mic will pick it up but that's hummingbirds whizzing around a million miles an
24:52
hour kind of neat woodworking on this place to the left
25:02
the residences at Bell
25:24
Tower lots of nooks and crannies around here to explore little splash pool
25:29
Fountain over here kind
25:35
of losing my bearings a little
25:47
bit all right I think I'm going to duck up here real quick to the right
26:22
me what an awesome place to be able to send your kid down the river it's like
26:29
it's kind of seems wild uh and exciting but it's also so
26:34
controlled and safe uh that there you don't have to worry too much and you can walk along
26:40
the sides to follow along lots of
26:46
access little playgrounds as well
26:56
H this is is not taking me where I thought it was taking me but sort of
27:02
the the deal with me in my walking uh we'll go this way is kind of I just went
27:10
a different way so Burton is a famous
27:16
snowboard uh company and learned a little bit about them and their Origins
27:21
at the Museum I mentioned earlier this Gondola seems to be still
27:27
running last year wasn't and it did a 76 mile is
28:05
guess they're just finishing up for the day maybe uh so off to the left you get some
28:11
more nature trails I think I'm going to duck back in more art and sculpture I'm
28:16
going to duck back and go back into this sort of center part of town or this
28:24
more uh active area and and then we will make our way further east we're making
28:32
our way west to east along this walk mainly that's the general Trend you can see some other sides of the valley there
28:39
big houses up on there must be spectacular
28:48
views first chair we went in there the other night got some nachos and the nicest guy was there um there an ice
28:57
cream store here cafes more Trails more
29:15
[Music] fun your girl has a dog in her purse
29:41
um it is a wide variety of people that we're seeing here it's not all the
29:48
1centers multi-millionaires I mean it's it's you're going to spend some money here but it's a lot of different just
29:54
everyday people and having a good relaxed time which I
30:00
appreciate another Alpine themed
30:08
location there's the clock tower we saw just a little bit ago oh and look at this
30:16
uh flower flowered bu flowed Gorsuch limited not
30:22
sure what they do lots of flowers down here
30:28
oh here we go CT bridge I think that's what we're looking for we made into a lot of Lo and music and sort of uh it's
30:37
right around dinner time so people are out having a good time a lot of live music I think that person was singing
30:43
live um huh whiskey and spirit
30:52
company okay tenth Mountain whiskey and spirit company one of the things we picked up at the Museum museum is the
31:00
10th Mountain division history which was a uh division that trained locally and
31:07
they were focused on Mountain Warfare during World War II and
31:12
uh uh really really fascinating stuff and and how their
31:19
uh their history and here's some tubers there's a somebody with a little
31:25
kid having a great time a little
31:30
cooler and then if you look over here so you can see there's lots of places to get in and out of the creek you can see
31:36
it's shallow they're waiting down there little
31:45
beaches sometimes you might need to push oh here's the museum
31:58
and here's a monument to them ski Trooper but they also did mountain
32:04
climbing alpineer and stuff as well but then they came back and started kind of
32:10
started the ski industry here really built it up and it's in that uh just below the
32:16
village Veil Village Welcome Center um free to go into and look around so definitely check
32:24
that out but now we are going going
32:30
to we're going to make our way further
32:36
east like somebody might be packing up to head
33:00
I just love seeing all these families and kids able to ride their bikes around
33:06
and I don't know it's just nice to see people able to do that
33:35
we're going to try and find our way back to this um nature path along the way I think our earlier my earlier
33:42
walks uh ended back in the veil Village and I did more uh walking around
33:49
exploring the shops and stuff this one I want to get a little bit more mileage under our belt
34:01
see a ton of bikes locked up and not locked
34:13
up I think this place is the gravity house h
34:25
s okay so if we follow this road Road um it's going to Loop over to the
34:31
left and go along a bunch more condos and houses and that sort of thing
34:37
beautiful beautiful area and one of the things we were noticing that I really enjoy is how well
34:45
these buildings are integrated into the trees and the forest and they not just
34:51
clear everything and make a lawn they've either left the trees in a lot of cases
34:57
or been around long enough with the trees to allow the trees to grow up again here's some more tubers
35:50
this you know granted my own personal philosophy is it would be
35:56
even more idyllic without all the buildings and stuff but we have to have some buildings in some
36:04
places and if you're going to have them it's I think it's nicer to have it like this
37:07
some older buildings older
37:14
style there's a little hummingbird on this branch of the spruce if you can see
37:26
there away went just want to take you down to the creek real quick
37:39
quickly my first thought about having the houses down this close to the creek is there must be some sort of flood risk
37:45
but have to believe there's some sort of mitigation strategy
39:21
one of the um cons I guess about the is that
39:28
because the valley is so narrow they've pushed you know the the interstate has to come through here I70
39:36
and it's just on the other side excuse me
39:41
about a couple hundred yards to the left here and you can barely hear it
39:47
though uh every once in a while I hear the rumble of a truck go by but for the most part it's pretty quiet
39:54
different different levels at different places starting to hear a little bit more
40:01
now I think we're on the edge of a sports area you can hear it
40:07
yep you can see it right there actually maybe 100 meters 100 yards
40:16
away but the bird calls are louder
40:43
so I think the veil also owns Beaver Creek which is further west another ski resort
40:48
area and I don't know how the ski passes work in the winter we're making it work
41:07
we have a little bit of an uh education center and then a park kind of neat this one has to do
41:14
with birds and dinosaurs and then playgrounds and open
41:20
space and sporting equipment even a grill and some bathrooms
41:54
some tubers seeing even more tubers today than I did
42:05
yesterday another covered foot Bridge more picnic tables and
42:13
[Music] grills and I believe further over is the
42:22
Betty Ford botanical gardens uh
42:28
I don't have any details on that they were closed yesterday for a private party or part of it was
42:33
closed maybe we'll be able to find our way through there after we go to the amphitheater which is where we are
42:39
headed at the moment
42:59
there's a nature trail off to the
43:13
right of a neat painted sphere over here let's take a look at that I just think it's
43:20
neat these limestone rocks all the plants growing on
43:26
them this is really cool I
43:40
think it's called The Betty Ford Alpine Gardens veil by Cheryl St John really
44:05
it's the Children's Garden and over to our left is the
44:13
amphitheater and oh looks like it's kind of open we'll just go poke our head in it's a really beautiful stage and
44:21
covered bits as well as maybe won't go um you
44:27
can see the grassy area there's some seating under the roof amazing
44:33
um AV setup and then you can kind of see in the back there various levels of lawn to
44:41
sit on and then behind the um stage are all these wonderful flowers and Gardens
44:59
and this is and that's the Gerald R Ford Amphitheater this is the Betty Ford Alpine Gardens the highest Alpine
45:05
Gardens or botanical gardens in I think in the world maybe that's what someone said so let's just Mosey along here for
45:13
a few minutes just soak it all in here
46:13
lots of little paid paths gravel paths
46:49
everywhere and most of the stuff is tagged with signs with uh common and scientific
47:42
now we're getting some Highway noise up by the soccer
47:54
fields so on this far Hillside just tons and tons and tons of Aspen trees I would
48:01
love to come back in October and just see all the
48:06
foliage it must be just
48:24
amazing there looks like a beaver dam analog they've
48:48
created Alpine garden tool shed and cabin I mean other than
48:54
the sound of the Highway which you can get away from fairly quickly there an um
49:03
softball or baseball field here uh what an idic Place let's go back in
49:09
there and descend probably 10 ft to get away
49:21
sound see where this path off the left goes for
50:05
and just like that we're away from the highway sounds and back to the sounds of running water and families having a good
50:16
time okay I think that's going to be our walk we're right around 50 minutes here thank you for joining me in Veil
50:22
Colorado once again this time a summer season I believe my other have been in the
50:28
winter uh I believe one was in February one was in November
50:33
maybe um what a beautiful place um you know it's it is it's not let me
50:41
see you can get into wild areas from here very very easily uh this is very
50:48
self-contained and uh calming and Serene in a lot of ways um especially uh
50:57
uh further out here in the gardens area and along the creek you can certainly get into a party scene if you want to
51:04
find it in town or fine dining or desserts or family entertainment that
51:11
sort of thing live music I mentioned all that uh but just a beautiful beautiful
51:17
part of the world and uh because the highway is so here right here and we're only what is it maybe an hour and a half
51:24
2 hours from Denver uh they have a major International Airport and a train station and his own
51:31
wonderful uh culture down there it's really easy access easily accessible here so um if you haven't been to Vil I
51:39
hope you will let me know if you come if you have been to Veil I hope you'll share your memories and your thoughts
51:45
your Corrections Etc with me as well and mainly thank you for joining me I appreciate you sharing your time with me
51:51
uh I hope you've enjoyed it and I will see you again next time not sure from where
51:57
uh but it will be uh be fun keep on stepping
