Why Labour might have to bail out the UK’s biggest water supplier
Thames Water is set to run out of money entirely within a year – unless there is some kind of long-term financial lifeline. So, how did the supplier of a quarter of the UK population’s water go so wrong? And is the government about to step in to bail it out? The company has accumulated an almost incomprehensible 20 billion pounds of debt. As of the end of June this year, Thames Water had 424 million pounds in available cash and cash equivalents. However, by mid-August, the firm had withdrawn 872 million pounds from the first portion of the super senior facility loan.
