County. In July, Noises County fell
0:05
victim to five cyber attacks. Three of
0:07
those costing the county around $2
0:08
million. Now, the sheriff's office is
0:10
saying this looks like a BEC scheme, a
0:13
scam that's grown more common across the
0:14
Coastal Bend. I spoke with Katie Galan
0:17
at the Better Business Bureau. She says
0:19
BEC schemes are one of the top three
0:21
major scams that targets businesses or
0:23
entities. The first, bill pay. That's
0:26
when someone in charge of paying bills
0:27
is too busy to doublech checkck invoices
0:29
and just paste them.
0:31
So, if you're a restaurant, maybe it's
0:33
um you know, food supplies or pans or
0:36
things like that. So, they try to send
0:37
it send invoices for things that that
0:40
organization or business would actually
0:42
be using.
0:43
Galan says that small businesses are
0:44
typically hit with this type of scam.
0:46
They try to target entities or
0:48
organizations that are maybe
0:50
understaffed.
0:50
The second fishing emails. Staff members
0:53
receive an email, click a link, and the
0:55
fraud link will start installing malware
0:57
that gives the scammer access to login
0:59
and passwords.
1:00
So, if we are talking a city or county
1:03
entity, then we can be talking about um
1:07
you know, AC information that they can
1:09
access, different login information to
1:11
get them into certain portals.
1:13
And the third, the one Newasis County
1:15
may have fallen for, the BC scam, also
1:18
known as business email compromise.
1:20
Scammers pretend to be a business or
1:21
vendor that the entity already works
1:23
with and asks to get their banking
1:25
information changed, sending money
1:26
straight to the fraudster.
1:28
If they are emailing you that
1:29
information, that's a big red flag.
1:31
Nobody wants their bank account, you
1:32
know, information shared in an email or
1:35
text message.
1:35
Red flags include urgent payment
1:37
requests or pressure to move quickly.
1:39
You can always verify any changes by
1:42
calling the organization or vendor
1:43
that's supposedly sending you the
1:45
request. On that same note, don't call
1:47
the number that they provide you, but go
1:49
to your official records or an official
1:51
website, find the phone number that way,
1:52
and give them a call.
1:53
The reality is anyone can fall victim to
1:56
a scam.
1:57
Since this happened, I can't tell you
1:58
all the phone calls I receive from
2:00
cities, counties, business people here
2:02
locally that have had this exact same
2:04
thing happen.
2:05
But it happens right here in the Coastal
2:07
Bin. There's so much so much money that
2:09
is being lost and so much information
2:11
that is being compromised that it is um
2:14
you know it's very alarming. So we
2:16
definitely need to make sure that we are
2:17
sharing this information as much as
2:18
possible
2:19
moving forward. County leaders say the
2:21
focus is now on prevention.
2:23
This gave us a very big wakeup call. We
2:25
are not continuing with our EFT
2:28
transactions. They're just paper checks
2:30
and and will be for a little while. The
2:33
BBB urges you to report any scams to
2:35
their website, but I'll have that all
2:36
for you on my digital article online.
2:38
From there, they'll pass that
2:39
information along to law enforcement to
2:41
help warn others and keep them safe in
2:43
Oasis County. I'm your Sunrise
