HOW TO MAKE A MINI YARN HAT CHRISTMAS DECORATION - Super Easy way to use up yarn scraps
Jan 15, 2025
How cute are these little hats? You will be amazed how easy they are to make.
All you need is:
a cardboard tube
yarn
tissue paper
scissors.
That makes this a really inexpensive craft that you can make to match your Christmas decor. Upcycling cardboard tubes at its finest!
Great craft to involve the kids with too as once you have cut the yarn there are no more scissor involved.

hi and welcome to christinescrafts.com
0:03
today it's all about christmas we're
0:05
going to make some woolly hat tree
0:07
ornaments
0:08
really easy great for using up all those
0:11
scraps of yarn
0:12
so please remember to subscribe and make
0:14
sure you catch all my videos
0:17
and this is what we're going to make
0:18
today this one's that i stripe you on
0:20
and so is the one i'm going to make
0:22
today
0:23
you don't need much this is everything
0:25
you're going to need
0:26
toilet roll tube or similar kitchen roll
0:29
tube
0:30
pair of scissors
0:33
a ruler just so you can measure the
0:36
sizes
0:37
some yarn i've got two different ones
0:39
because i want to do stripes but maybe
0:41
you'll just want one yarn
0:42
it's up to you whatever colours you've
0:44
got
0:46
and some sort of tissue paper or kitchen
0:48
roll toilet paper even just
0:50
something that you can use to push into
0:51
the hat to make it
0:53
its shape so the first thing you're
0:56
gonna do
0:56
is take your roll and measure
1:00
one inch from the end now i'm going to
1:03
measure it in three places just so it's
1:05
easy to cut and get a nice straight line
1:07
it's up to you how many times you
1:09
measure it and how accurate you are
1:11
but an inch makes a nice size little hat
1:14
so then just have to squash it down a
1:16
little bit
1:18
and cut along that line
1:21
if you're more comfortable draw the
1:23
whole line in i've just done it with
1:25
three marks
1:28
and then there you go you've got the
1:30
bottom of your hat
1:31
all cut and ready to go
1:36
obviously you can cut as many as you
1:38
like out of your roll and make as many
1:40
hats as you like so now we're going to
1:42
cut our yarn
1:44
so the first piece i'm going to cut i'm
1:47
going to measure it
1:49
and i'm going to make it 12 inches long
1:53
you see have a bit of trouble with it
1:55
pinging back
1:57
put the first piece 12 inches
2:03
and cut it
2:06
now the length of this is not crucial
2:09
so i'm just going to now cut my other
2:12
pieces
2:14
by measuring from the one i've already
2:16
cut
2:17
so they'll all be about 12 inches they
2:20
will not be accurate but that doesn't
2:21
matter
2:22
the ends will all get trimmed off
2:24
shortly anyway
2:26
so i'm just going to repeat that now
2:29
i'm going to cut 20 of these pink ones
2:35
but you'll see later on that wasn't
2:36
quite enough so if i was to repeat it
2:39
i would cut 28 pink ones
2:42
and then i'm just going to repeat the
2:44
whole process with the purple yarn
2:47
so for my first length i'm just going to
2:49
cut it to 12 inches
2:52
and then i'm going to cut them all using
2:53
that piece of yarn
2:55
you could obviously just use one of your
2:57
pink pieces of yarn
2:58
but i thought well halfway through i'll
3:01
re-measure
3:02
just keep myself reasonably accurate
3:05
so there we go just cut all the ones you
3:08
think you're going to need
3:09
again if i was doing it again i would
3:10
have cut 28
3:12
because that's how many are used of each
3:14
color
3:16
so now we're going to put them on the
3:18
tube so take one length of yarn
3:21
and fold it in half
3:24
then take your tube and feed the loop
3:28
through it bring the other end up
3:31
over the outside of the tube feed those
3:34
ends through the loop
3:36
and pull it tight so it could be nicely
3:39
wrapped
3:39
around your tube okay we happy with that
3:45
take another length of yarn fold it in
3:48
half
3:50
and doing it the same way as you did the
3:53
first one
3:54
feed the loop through
3:57
take the ends up outside the tube
4:00
through the loop pull it tight and push
4:04
it next to
4:05
the one you'd already done make sure
4:07
they're nice and tight
4:09
and away we go now because i'm doing a
4:12
stripe
4:12
i'm now going to swap to my other color
4:15
you could obviously just do one of each
4:17
and stripe like that you could use five
4:19
different colors
4:21
get as creative as you like but in this
4:23
one i'm just doing the two colors and
4:25
i'm going to do two strands of each
4:28
so i'm going to get my loop feed it
4:31
through
4:32
bring the ends up pull them through the
4:34
loop
4:35
pull it tight and pull it up against the
4:37
others
4:39
and i'm just going to keep repeating the
4:41
same pattern
4:43
okay so i'm going to speed this bit up
4:48
so you can see that i did actually do it
4:51
but you don't have to sit and watch the
4:52
whole 10 minute procedure
4:55
so you'll see it just building up keep
4:57
pulling the threads through keep pulling
4:59
them tight
5:02
it's working my way around nice and
5:05
steady
5:06
nice and neat nice and tidy you'll see
5:09
here that i run out of yarn
5:11
and i just have to cut some more and
5:14
away i go again
5:15
so don't worry you can just always cut
5:17
some more
5:19
and that's it all threaded on
5:23
so now i'm going to make sure i am happy
5:25
with all those lens
5:26
pull any knots tight just check it over
5:30
this is your opportunity and then twist
5:34
those yarns
5:36
and poke them through the tube and
5:39
you'll start to see your hat shape
5:41
forming
5:42
just make sure they all go all the way
5:44
through
5:45
pull them reasonably tight
5:48
and you're starting to form a hat
5:56
get yourself a long piece of yarn
5:58
because this is the one you're going to
5:59
tie it off with
6:00
and also hang your decoration up by
6:03
place the strands across it
6:07
and then form a knot pull it tight
6:11
it's up to you how far you are from your
6:14
your tube it depends how big you want
6:15
your hat to be
6:16
but make sure you leave plenty to have
6:18
your frondy top of your hat
6:22
so you can see i just got a bit caught
6:23
in just get them loose
6:27
and it's starting to look like a hat i'm
6:30
now going to take some tissue paper
6:32
if you use kitchen roll toilet roll
6:34
doesn't matter just something
6:36
that's quite soft but will hold its
6:38
shape a little bit
6:40
it's like so i'm just going to rip a
6:41
small piece off scrunch it up into a
6:44
ball
6:45
and push it inside the hat and it will
6:47
just help it to
6:49
hold its shape and look like it's uh
6:53
puffed out and then we just need to tidy
6:56
up the yarns at the top
6:58
you'll find they're quite untidy
6:59
especially if you weren't very accurate
7:01
with your cutting
7:03
and you just need to trim them so make
7:05
sure those long yarns that your hanger
7:07
are moved out of the way
7:11
make sure you're happy with how your
7:12
hat's sitting and how it's looking
7:14
you see i'm just pulling them getting a
7:16
few straight
7:18
and then clip over the top so that
7:20
they're all the same length or shaped or
7:22
however you want to do it but just so
7:24
they're tidy
7:30
get rid of those bits and there we go
7:32
one finished hat
7:33
you can make a loop with the hanging
7:35
threads and hang it on your tree
7:40
all finished make as many as you like
7:44
so here you'll see some i've made before
7:48
and happy making so thank you for
7:51
watching and i hope you've really
7:52
enjoyed it i hope you feel inspired and
7:54
you're going to go away make your own
7:55
hats and enjoy them on your christmas
7:57
tree
