Ximending is a hot-spot for fashion, shopping, entertainment and street food! Today, we will be showing you some of the delicious hidden gems within the shopping street!!! We start the night at the most famous yet authentic Taiwanese stalls in the area called Ay Chung Rice Flour Noodles. Their specialty is a think bowl of rice flour noodles. The broth is thick with a strong bonito flavour, the noodles are silky, the intestines are chewy. It is topped with cilantro and you serve yourself chili, garlic and vinegar sauces. We ordered a large bowl which came to 70 NTD (USD $2.33). Next up is Taiwanese fried chicken! Forget KFC, Hot Star chicken is where the locals go. Their specialty is “ji pie” which translates to chicken steak. The steak is MASSIVE, super crispy and topped with their secret spices. The juice to crunch ratio is perfected. You can choose how spicy you would like the fried chicken, and we paid 75 NTD for the large piece (USD $2.49). To wash down the street food, we went to a famous tea shop right beside Hot Star - Xing Fu Tang. Their bubble milk teas are almost luxurious. Right now, they are serving a brown sugar “dalgona coffee” bubble milk tea that we wanted to try. The tapioca pearls are cooked with brown sugar and the Dalgona foam is made with instant coffee. Although there are better bubble milk teas around, the presentation of the tea was stunning! The tea cost 95 NTD (USD $3.16). There is a traditional stall deep within Ximen that serves a delicious oyster omelette (as well as many typical Taiwanese dishes). The shop is called Tian Tian Li. We got to watch the chef make the omelette from scratch. He made it crispy on the outside and goopy on the inside. It is always served with a sweet sauce. The oyster omelette cost 65 NTD (USD $2.16). To end our huge night of eating, we visit an old school juice shop, Chengdu Star Fruit Juice, that’s been around since 1966. Their specialty is star fruit juice. Star fruit is slightly salty and sour and the juice is very refreshing. The owner was very kind and gave us an extra treat: star fruit that has been pickled in rice wine. The wine eliminates the sourness and adds sweetness. She told us many foreigners cannot eat it but we really enjoyed it! The star fruit juice cost 25 NTD (USD $0.83).
