The Flyers got involved at the NHL trade deadline on Friday and traded young winger Bobby Brink to the Minnesota Wild for former top prospect David Jiricek. It's an interesting move, at least, and Ryan and Jacob are here to break it down.

I am Ryan Gilbert. Joining me once again
0:02
today is Jacob Russell. Jacob, Bobby
0:05
Brink traded to Minnesota for David
0:07
Yurichek. How you feeling? How you
0:09
feeling?
0:09
>> Uh just need I feel like we need to
0:11
start with a moment of silence for
0:13
Robert or
0:13
>> Oh. Oh, I
0:17
>> Yes. Thank you. I I I I'm glad I'm glad
0:20
you brought it up because I I I had the
0:22
same thing in mind like
0:23
>> I I uh I went to the game last night. I
0:27
splurged on some all you can eat and
0:28
drink tickets. They're very cheap
0:29
cheaper than normal. So, I uh had had a
0:31
hangover today. Uh you know, wake up.
0:34
I'm writing for my other job. I'm not
0:36
even focused in on hockey. I'm like,
0:38
"All right, if anything happens, someone
0:39
will let me know." Then, like half hour
0:41
after the trade happened, I see, oh,
0:42
Bobby Brink is is to Minnesota. I'm
0:44
like, "Okay, you know, yeah,
0:45
>> going going home there to Minnesota." Um
0:48
I like the Wild this season. They got
0:49
Quinn Hughes has a chance to win there.
0:51
And the Flyers get back David Urchek,
0:53
who drafted by Columbus, one pick after
0:56
cutter goier in 2022. So, high pedigree,
0:59
big right-handed shot there. Um, so
1:02
yeah, you know, one for one swap. Not
1:04
not too bad there. We'll dig into it
1:06
more here, but first, uh, thanks to
1:07
FanDuel for sponsoring the show. Make
1:09
sure you guys, uh, are liking and
1:11
subscribed to Broad Street Hockey if you
1:13
guys got super chats or anything for us
1:15
or hype up the video here. Trying to go
1:17
as long as possible. Hopefully, there is
1:18
some other stuff to talk about up until
1:20
the deadline here. But, um, what are
1:23
your initial reactions to the to the
1:24
brink for for Euros trade? Well, I think
1:27
I it's uh it'd be I'd be remiss not to
1:32
say that like everyone's going to miss
1:33
Bobby Brink. I think everyone really
1:34
grew to like Bobby Brink. Um he was on
1:37
the best line on the team. Uh as I
1:39
always like to say, um and now he's
1:42
gone. Uh that line won't be reunited.
1:45
Tyo, Kates, and Brink is is dead,
1:47
unfortunately. And that's that's
1:48
upsetting for a lot a lot of reasons.
1:50
But, uh, he's actually just talking
1:52
right now, uh, on on Trade Center, um,
1:55
about his, uh, his acquisition and going
1:58
back back to where he played. Uh,
2:00
>> where he grew up, where he played.
2:01
>> I heard I heard he's trying to get to to
2:03
Vegas to play tonight. Is he in Vegas?
2:05
Is he on a plane?
2:07
>> He is hauling his ass across country.
2:09
Um, I don't know. Maybe he's in an
2:11
airport. I mean, I'm not obviously not
2:13
listening to the show. It's just on in
2:15
the background. But yeah, um, David
2:17
Deerek is the type of guy you take a
2:19
swing on, though. I mean, he's the
2:21
archetype of defenseman. 6'4, 204, big
2:24
body, can move the puck. Always could
2:26
move the puck coming out of the draft.
2:27
And when he was drafted, um there was a
2:30
lot of of fanfare around his sort of his
2:34
sort of play style and how he can mold
2:35
being sort of an offensive defenseman uh
2:38
with a with that bit of uh size. Um and
2:42
you know, whether or not Risto goes um
2:44
this is something I'm also going to be
2:45
writing about for for Broad Street
2:47
Hockey uh soon as well. whether or not
2:50
Risto goes, this is the type of guy who
2:51
would be a a long-term Risto rep
2:53
replacement. Um, unfortunately, he he
2:57
went to the NHL right away with
2:59
Columbus. He played he played four games
3:00
as a 19-year-old and then he played 43
3:03
the year after as a 20-year-old. And and
3:05
I remember even mentioning at the time,
3:06
we were talking about this even before
3:08
we started, um mentioning at the time
3:10
that year check's the type of guy with a
3:12
change of scenery that you would think
3:15
uh might have a chance to to break in
3:18
break break out uh break out and break
3:21
into a lineup, right? Um if he if he
3:24
went somewhere else, but instead he gets
3:26
traded um to the Wild. And you know, the
3:29
Wilds have now at least um Hughes,
3:33
Spurgeon, Broaddin, Middleton, you know,
3:35
these guys,
3:37
Faber, like they're stacked, right? So
3:40
>> Chuck Petri as well now
3:41
>> and Petri's there too, right? So where's
3:43
Urachek going to play, right? Because
3:44
he's not going to be it's not worth
3:46
having to be a healthy scratch. So he's
3:47
played a lot of his games in the AHL and
3:50
>> he's struggled with pace at at times,
3:52
right? He hasn't necessarily adapted to
3:54
the NHL. Fantastic. 25 games with
3:56
Minnesota and and failed to get a point
3:59
in uh about 11 minutes per game, right?
4:02
He's not playing very much, but um I
4:05
think it's the type of guy you take a
4:07
swing on and as I wrote yesterday um for
4:10
BSH as well.
4:12
>> There's a glut of wingers that the
4:14
Flyers have and unfortunately Bobby
4:16
Brink, we know what he is. He's a middle
4:17
six winger. He's quite quality middle
4:19
six winger. think he'll be very good for
4:22
Minnesota and they obviously win the
4:23
trade in terms of this year impact um
4:26
the player on the roster, right? Uh
4:29
Minnesota obviously is getting the
4:30
better end of that that deal, but at the
4:32
same time you look at guys like
4:35
>> Mishkov are here and connectnne tippet
4:39
for coming back.
4:40
>> I think Barky really made Brink
4:42
expendable.
4:42
>> Barky is expendable as well. You got
4:46
>> like Yeah. So Brink like clearly the
4:49
most tradable pending RFA or has one
4:51
more year like a cheap contract here. Um
4:54
yeah, I remember talking about David
4:56
Gurichek um last November, November
4:58
2024. He was traded from Columbus to
5:01
Minnesota. Uh they got Urak in a fifth
5:04
for Damon Hunt. Uh first, a third, a
5:07
fourth, and a second. So gave up a big
5:09
haul for for Eurichek. uh Flyers
5:11
probably weren't in on him then because
5:13
they had Jamie Dale who's like not the
5:15
same type of player. Yerich's bigger,
5:17
but both former first round picks, both
5:19
rushed to the NHL a little bit.
5:22
>> Like
5:23
>> the Wild win the trade for this year,
5:25
but I see this as a win-win and and like
5:28
you you're not going to lose this trade.
5:30
Yeah, I don't think like at the very
5:31
least you you go around the league, most
5:34
teams would rather have just David than
5:37
Bobby Brink. There are only specific
5:38
teams that want a small winger like that
5:41
that can fit in when there are probably
5:44
over half the league right now could use
5:46
a big right-handed defenseman. We're
5:47
seeing these guys being traded at the
5:49
deadline for way more than they're
5:51
worth. And yeah, when I saw this, I was
5:53
like, "Okay, Risto's probably going
5:55
now." I don't know if going to start in
5:58
the AHL. I know they sent him down so he
6:00
could play for the playoffs or if he'll
6:02
come up and play, you know, third pair
6:04
instead of JSON. Seeers out right now.
6:07
So I I really like David Urchek as a
6:10
return for this. You know, Bobby Brink,
6:12
love Bobby Brink. One of the biggest
6:13
Bobby Brink fans out there. And like
6:15
just trading Brink for like a pick or
6:17
something like that wouldn't have been
6:18
as exciting. But like you're getting
6:20
back David Urgent, like a former sixth
6:23
overall pick, still 22 years old,
6:25
freshly 22 back in November. So, um,
6:29
don't have Brad Shaw anymore to fix him,
6:31
but the Flyers have had pretty good, um,
6:33
development with their defenseman. And
6:35
it is really a position where they don't
6:37
have a ton of prospects. We were talking
6:39
about it yesterday. They have bonk and
6:41
then like no one else that you're like,
6:42
"Okay, they can be they can be a legit
6:46
um contributor
