In this whiskey review, I try out Colonel E.H. Taylor Small Batch from the Buffalo Trace Distillery. Does it hold it's own as a middle ground between Eagle Rare and Stagg Jr. for the price point? Hey guys and welcome to yet another bourbon review. Today we're going to take a look at Colonel E.H
0:05
Taylor Small Batch. So I don't know about you guys but coming across this one at least in
0:13
Southern California is super rare. I've seen it on the shelves before in one of these but it's
0:18
usually really overpriced like this bottle is sometimes upwards of $70 but the actual suggested
0:23
retail price on this is only like 40 bucks so it's definitely pushing it into like secondary
0:27
territory on some of the pricing so you got to watch out for that but otherwise for 40 bucks I
0:32
had to pick it up because I don't know when I'd ever see it again for that price. So since this is 100 proof I'm going to go ahead and pour it and let it start aerating a bit before I drink it
0:43
So Buffalo Trace uses their high corn mash bill with E.H. Taylor and I think it's interesting that
0:48
it's actually the same mash bill they use for their Eagle Rares and their regular Buffalo Trace
0:52
and even their George T. Stag. So I think it's an interesting choice to go with the sweeter mash
0:56
versus you know like the high rye like most distilleries do. So since this is
1:00
100 proof it kind of puts it right in between the Eagle Rare and the Stagg
1:04
Jr. So it's not the 90 proof of Eagle Rare or the 120 something proof of Stagg
1:08
Jr. It's right there in the middle and for the price it kind of fits very well
1:13
between those two So I want to see if it can actually live up to being kind of like a middle ground between those two And as you can tell I finally have a chance to rep my Buffalo Trace merch By the way if you new here and you like watching bourbon and whiskey videos
1:24
I would love if you could hit the subscribe button, bell button, and like button. It means a lot
1:29
I'm still fairly new to doing these reviews, but there are so many channels that I admire out there doing it
1:33
that inspire me to keep making my own. But I appreciate you taking the time and drinking with me
1:37
Although I guess you don't have to drink to watch my reviews. I usually do when I'm watching them, but you do you
1:41
So this is set for about 5 to 10 minutes now, and you can kind of see that the legs, I believe they're called, are kind of a little bit going up the glass
1:50
Not quite as much as, like, some other whiskeys that are higher proof. So let's check out the nose and see how sweet it really is
1:57
Yep, it's sweet. That's actually one of the sweetest smelling bourbons I've ever smelled
2:02
It's almost like a candied apple and, like, a caramel apple together, if that makes sense
2:07
You get the typical caramel notes you get on bourbon, but there's like a candy sweetness that goes along with it
2:13
It's really nice. You do get a good bit of the alcohol on the nose, which I guess could be expected for a 100 proof
2:19
although I've had some 100 proofs that don't have that. But it's really, really nice, and from what I remember, it's a lot nicer than the nose on like Buffalo Trace, standard Buffalo Trace
2:29
Last time I had Eagle Rare I wasn really as into bourbon as I am now so I have to go back to that and see and compare but it really nice once you get past like the kind of like I call like hand sanitizer kind of smell Enough nosing it let taste it and see how it holds up
2:46
Luckily that alcohol burn isn't as apparent on the taste. Wow, there's so much sweetness in this
2:53
Like I've drank some of this before but I haven't really focused on like dialing in on what I get
2:57
from it. It still has like a chewy caramel, like almost like a what is it like Werther's Originals
3:01
or whatever they're called, like a chewy candy caramel taste. It definitely has a longer finish probably due to the higher proof
3:08
compared to like your Buffalo Trace, but it's not like a creamy mouthfeel I get on some of the higher proof bourbons
3:14
And Stagg Jr. is actually one of my favorite cast strength bourbons. And I have a feeling that the mouthfeel on that one
3:18
is kind of what sets it apart from this. You do get the oak, but not as, you know
3:22
strong as you would expect with other bourbons. Even Eagle Rare, since that's like a 10-year-old version of the same Nashville
3:28
that has a lot more oak that kind of balances out the sweetness. where this kind of relies on the higher proof to balance it out
3:34
It's really nice, and I guess what I'm kind of hung up on is the $40 price point
3:38
Just to put it in perspective, I get Eagle Rare for around $30, and Stagg Junior for about $50 to $60 on a good day
3:45
It's hard to find, too. But I tend to go more towards older bourbons
3:50
so that's kind of what's making me question it, because as I reviewed on this channel Henry McKinnon does a single 10 bottle and bond bourbon and that one is only about to in my store but that you getting a 10 bourbon that also bottled and bond And the only reason I feel like this is slightly a bit too sweet for me
4:07
is because it doesn't really have those strong other like oaky flavors to balance it out
4:11
So my final verdict is E.H. Taylor, at least the small batch, I have not tried the single barrel or
4:17
the barrel proof, would be really interesting. If I could ever get my hands on those, I would love to
4:21
try them. I think I will stick with my Stagg Jr. for $10 more, but if you're not able to find Stagg
4:27
Jr. and you see this on the shelf for like $40 or even $50 if you like have never seen Stagg Jr.
4:32
I agree with you to try it. It's similar in a lot of ways, so if you try this and you like it
4:37
you know you're gonna like the Stagg Jr.'s. You know you're gonna like the George T. Staggs, which I have yet to taste, but overall it's a really solid bourbon. I just can't necessarily
4:45
recommend it over others for the price point. I recommend the Henry McKinnon Bottle and Bond
4:49
which is a single barrel, especially if you can find it, you know, between $25 and $35
4:53
Cheaper than this and oh so good. So thank you so much for watching my whiskey review
