Get ready for the second wave
0:05
Hey guys, welcome back to Bourbon Bites and today we're reviewing a whiskey I'm not quite sure why I picked up
0:11
So this is the Spirits of the Apocalypse, the Walking Dead Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey
0:18
So I actually picked this up, funny enough, near the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic
0:24
I saw it go on sale for only $12 in my store. I do know this is between a $30 and $40 MSRP on the bottle, but I think $12 is the lowest I've ever seen it go
0:35
So at that price, you know what? I had to pick up a bottle. I thought it was kind of perfect timing to pick it up anyways
0:41
And as you can tell, I've been actually sipping on this a good bit during the lockdown
0:46
So I thought now was a good time to do a review of it for you guys
0:50
I do think it's funny that the back of the bottle says, In a matter of months, society has crumbled
0:55
There is no government, no grocery stores, no mail delivery, no cable TV. So not quite there
1:01
but almost. There is a lot of mixed opinions on this online in terms of how bad it is
1:07
but I have a feeling that a lot of those people actually paid the full price point on this I did not so I going to review it from both perspectives But yeah there not much info about this bottle We do know it around four years old
1:20
We don't know the distillery, although it's been rumored to be Heaven Hill because it is a Diageo brand
1:25
It is 47% alcohol, which is pretty nice. Coming for like a mass-produced whiskey for people that I don't think would normally be whiskey drinkers
1:36
I think this is targeting Walking Dead fans. Not gonna lie, I picked up a second bottle that I have sealed somewhere in case this becomes a hot commodity collector item in like 10 years
1:45
So let's go ahead and pour us a glass and see how it holds up
1:51
So on the nose, it's actually way more floral than I would have imagined
1:55
It almost doesn't come across, at least first impressions, as a Heaven Hill product
2:00
Like I said, they don't reveal the distiller. People just know that it's a similar mash spill to Heaven Hill and we know it's coming from Diageo
2:08
So it reminds me, honestly, it reminds me of Four Roses. I could be wrong there, but I don't think they're going to reveal that info anytime soon
2:14
So we're just going to go with don't know. It's surprisingly oaky on the nose
2:19
I wasn't really expecting that from something so... I mean you can kind of tell that it very light colored We know it pretty young but it actually pretty oak forward on the nose There a bit of fruitiness there almost in the banana realm but not quite
2:34
Maybe more of like a dark fruit. It's almost sweeter than banana, so I don't want to say banana, but it's a pretty simplistic nose, not going to lie
2:41
But I'm curious to see if these flavors translate on the palate. So cheers. Really oak forward on the palate
2:50
It comes into more of like a peanut butter kind of territory. I didn't get that as much on the nose, but it's not nearly as floral as I was thinking on the palate
2:57
The palate does taste more like a Heaven Hill product. So maybe I just, I got a weird nosing on this
3:02
But yeah, palate-wise, it's pretty nice. I mean, it reminds me a lot of an Evan Williams flavor profile
3:09
You guys know I love the Bottle and Bond as well as the 1783 from Evan Williams
3:13
Reminds me a lot of that. Still sweet, almost like a banana bread. but a lot of oak there and a lot of depth that I don't get on some of the more
3:21
banana focused whiskeys that I'm not the biggest fan of. One of the things I look
3:25
for in a lower cost whiskey is balance and I think this whiskey is actually
3:30
pretty balanced overall. I mean none of the flavors jar you in a way like a weird
3:34
direction or a good direction Nothing really stands out too much about this whiskey but I would say obviously for the price point I paid for it I would definitely recommend it If it like in your area I would say wait
3:48
on a sale. I think you'd have a lot better options out there at the $40 price point. Unless, let's
3:53
say, you're the biggest Walking Dead fan. I know there's some hardcore fans out there. And you just
3:59
want it just because it's cool and it'd be fun to bring to a party. In that case, yeah, pick it up
4:03
I just don't think if you're going into it expecting $40 quality whiskey, you're going to be a little disappointed
4:09
But if you go into it thinking, you know, it's a fun release. They do a thing on the bottle
4:13
There's four different versions of it. Mine is the second one. That really doesn't mean anything flavor-wise
4:18
It's more of just like, collect them all. I'm still going to hold on to my unopened bottle because I really hope it's worth more than $12 sometime in the future
4:24
But yeah, I don't mind drinking this at all. I mean, in worst case scenario, use it as a mixer
4:28
I mean, I always use higher proof stuff as mixers anyway. So let me know what you guys think. Have you picked up this bottle
4:33
And if you did, what was the price you paid? Because I know the price is all over the place
4:37
So until next time, this has been Bourbon Bites, whiskey reviews with a retro twist
4:41
I'm Clifton. I'll see you guys next time. Cheers
