this is bay radio
0:06
she told me my acc suit if i stay one
0:08
day more on the street i'm gonna die
0:11
and this is again pretty much effect on
0:14
me
0:27
how the hell can another homeless person
0:31
steal from another homeless person
0:34
stealing from us
0:35
[Music]
0:37
and i cannot handle this anymore
0:49
i will not leave this bench unattended
0:53
and i can't walk the streets with all
0:55
the banks
0:56
simple as that i think when i stay here
0:59
and
1:00
i'll rough it out and then when somebody
1:02
else comes who i can trust
1:06
he lives a couple of years
1:14
so do you feel with these guys there is
1:16
there's trust there
1:19
i trust them implicitly
1:22
i trust them implicitly
1:29
[Music]
1:39
hi guys my name is sute i'm the founder
1:41
of project costa
1:43
welcome to mcdonald's
1:47
the idea is to feed the homeless look if
1:50
i can find some people on the streets
1:53
who are willing who have willing to get
1:56
off the streets to get back in society
1:58
and i want to help them to get clean in
2:00
a halfway home and
2:01
and you are now visiting the halfway
2:03
home where you are in this is the
2:05
halfway home
2:06
we're just rebuilding we are making a
2:08
soup kitchen
2:10
we are making rooms with burn beds so
2:12
and
2:13
the the thing is we take it baby steps
2:16
first of all we started and we wanted to
2:18
take one place and feed from there
2:20
but because of the the homeless didn't
2:22
know us yet
2:23
they they didn't came so we had 11 12
2:26
feet that night and then
2:27
i was thinking we can better uh draw a
2:30
map
2:30
and look where they live and and this is
2:32
what we've been doing the last three
2:34
three weeks so we go in the car with the
2:37
food
2:37
and we drive starting in calpe and we
2:41
found ourselves some homeless that are
2:43
living four or five homeless
2:45
in the bus station of calpe
2:48
so first we start there give them the
2:50
food give them clothes give them
2:52
blankets give them whatever they need
2:54
and then the next one is
2:56
living in front of the mcdonald's on the
2:59
on a park
3:00
he was sleeping on the bench so we took
3:03
care of some blankets we
3:05
took care of some mattresses for him
3:06
that he can live there and
3:09
so so we went around and we have now in
3:12
cart
3:13
about 23 30 people already where they
3:16
live and
3:17
we're feeding them at their homes but
3:19
they don't have homes so
3:20
it's a home in the open air and well
3:24
by um it's from bernie um he
3:27
speaks about spanish he's been in
3:31
this area for a while now um his story
3:34
so far
3:35
is uh it came originally to see his
3:37
uncle who died of cancer
3:40
um the house got repossessed and then he
3:42
ended up on the streets
3:43
and decided to stay in spain um he won
3:47
the street for a couple of nights and
3:48
all his stuff got stolen
3:50
um his luggage his documents and so on
3:53
and he just went down in a spiral with
3:57
alcohol and he's been here ever since
4:00
um he says he's been on the street for
4:02
nine months but i think it's a bit
4:04
longer
4:05
um once you've been drinking every day
4:07
or going down in a spiral
4:10
or an invisible line what you don't see
4:13
um you end up
4:14
in this situation you know you kind of
4:16
lose
4:17
dignity you know you all hope of getting
4:20
home
4:21
uh i've been i was on that bench over
4:23
there
4:25
and i moved over here simply because
4:28
the people come in and the sand says
4:32
no pedals no dogs but they come in there
4:36
and it's it stinks
4:39
we asked him if he wanted to go home and
4:41
he's not ready to go home yet
4:44
um i think he's nervous to see his
4:46
parents or his sister
4:48
but the options there so anytime he's
4:51
ready to
4:52
leave this behind and go home we'll have
4:54
to support him and help him as much as
4:55
we can
4:56
i don't want to go anywhere but it's
4:58
always handy to have a passport
5:00
you know just in case you need to go
5:04
back to england
5:05
but i have no intention of going back to
5:08
england
5:10
because you know last three years okay
5:13
but coming up for winter now we're gonna
5:15
get colder and colder man so
5:16
what happened for me in 2013 i was
5:19
working in tourism
5:21
um selling tickets for the vatican
5:22
museum and a coliseum
5:24
to tour companies and
5:28
basically there was a very long line for
5:30
the colosseum or the vatican
5:32
the tourism went down i couldn't pay my
5:35
rent
5:36
and the landlord kicked me out um i
5:38
ended up on the streets
5:40
um slept two days on the street all my
5:42
luggage was stolen
5:43
including my documents my passport and i
5:46
was trapped
5:47
so he's gonna need at least three pairs
5:51
of jeans these are levi's birthday
5:56
now um what happened is i
6:00
turned to alcohol because i wanted to
6:02
sleep on a night
6:03
and i became an alcoholic i said no
6:07
that you are on the street gives you an
6:09
excuse to drink
6:12
you know yeah because then they can say
6:14
yeah
6:15
of course i drink if you are in my
6:17
situation
6:18
you
6:22
so if we can save some people on the
6:26
street who are alcoholics
6:28
then probably we can take them off the
6:29
streets also but you have to help them
6:31
with their drug and alcohol problem
6:33
before you take them off to sleep i was
6:35
traumatized when i was in australia
6:37
i was traumatized and i couldn't believe
6:41
i
6:41
i couldn't blame the public for that
6:43
quote
6:44
you know i didn't go on moments when i'd
6:46
expect nobody said i was awesome i
6:48
didn't speak
6:48
to anybody you know it was a long time
6:51
and i
6:52
you know guess where i slept outside the
6:54
vatican
6:55
outside the church the vatican the main
6:58
church
6:59
and not even a priest
7:02
how'd you get your face back um yeah
7:06
you just i went to the soup kitchen
7:09
volunteered
7:10
and the sisters so i had a bit of
7:14
interest
7:15
and that's how i put some pounds up for
7:17
them i did a bit of cooking for them
7:19
and that's how conversations built up
7:21
and they said to me
7:22
i was the only english guy all of us
7:24
were in the eastern european
7:26
i was the only english guy and they said
7:29
y'all better than this
7:30
why are you on the street i expect my
7:32
situation
7:34
and you're gonna give me let me have a
7:36
shower a bag of clothes i decided from
7:39
here i just stood up
7:41
and i looked know
7:45
project room was just showing compassion
7:47
and kindness
7:48
i used to cook 200 meals twice a week
7:51
and i used to go to an area as a train
7:54
station
7:55
in central rome it looks after the
7:58
people
7:59
in that way and yeah we did fundraising
8:03
the community came together and saw what
8:05
were happening
8:06
and got involved and we managed to get a
8:09
lot
8:09
um 55 off the streets by doing what we
8:13
did
