GOLFERS GET INVOLVED. There's Still a Chance for 4 Ball Teams to Enter on Tuesday Sept 17th
Oct 29, 2024
This week Kal spoke to Javea Golf Club member Dave Harper who's behind a big event on September 17th to raise much needed funds for the Javea Volunteer Firefighters.
They were joined by crew commander Terry Curran who explains more about what they do and where the money will go.
Happily, since this was recorded, the 9th and final hole has found a sponsor but the day is still open to golfers with a handicap to enter as a four or for anyone to donate suitable raffle prizes.
Contact Dave via [email protected] or Whatsapp 685 661 960
Good luck to everyone involved and be sure to Share, Like and Subscribe if you found this informative👍

don't talk now about a fundraising
0:02
effort for the Javier volunteer
0:04
firefighters pleased to welcome Terry
0:06
back to the studio good to see you
0:08
again my friend good to see you again
0:10
too and Dave is here as well Dave
0:12
hebburn from the Javier golf club and uh
0:15
it's good that you're getting involved
0:17
and doing things uh for the firefighters
0:20
yeah it's um we've seen the fires from
0:23
the golf club and watch the helicopters
0:24
come over collecting water and and
0:26
putting the fires out that have happened
0:27
close to the golf club and realize that
0:29
uh it's important for all of us to to
0:31
look after the environment look after
0:32
the the houses the the farms you you've
0:35
had a personal experience actually
0:36
haven't you we had we we live in tset
0:39
and the fire came to within about 150 M
0:41
of us at Christmas time which is a a
0:44
fairly scary thing Terry just explain to
0:46
us the level of fire uh service that we
0:49
have in the Javier area who who is there
0:52
and and how many people are involved you
0:54
mean us and the other I'm talking
0:56
completely well in general you got the
0:58
denya has their main fire station in
1:01
denya I think they have about 80
1:02
officers fire officers that are there
1:04
but they'll maybe have between up to
1:06
about 14 Max on each shift but that
1:08
doesn't always work cuz if they're on a
1:10
holiday whatever here in jaier we also
1:12
have the local protection cille which is
1:14
one of the few protection cils that
1:15
actually has their own little fire
1:16
service which about has about 15 or 16
1:18
guys but that is that year round that's
1:21
pretty much they're all year round as
1:22
well uh we work quite regularly with
1:24
them then there's us which we have
1:26
another 16 full-on firefighters and
1:29
another two man ground ground crew and
1:30
you're all volunteers we're all
1:32
volunteers protection C are volunteers
1:34
then you are professionally paid okay
1:37
and what's it been like this year I mean
1:38
we're all aware of the fact that there
1:40
have been fires because we see the the
1:41
planes and the helicopters up and about
1:44
um there weren't any massive fires in
1:47
this particular area as such but but
1:49
still quite a lot of fires oh no there's
1:51
been yeah large large fires we haven't
1:53
had since what about 2016 we saw some
1:56
north of here in Valencia the one that
1:58
was in uh April was pretty much a large
2:00
size and it also was uh well it was a
2:03
long day it was well over 12 hours for
2:05
us when we were there but the fire
2:06
itself was classes activated for up to 3
2:08
days and this was the one up near the
2:09
crematorium that's right it went from
2:11
the crematorium all the way up to the uh
2:13
G roundabout and then the other large
2:15
one is mentioned before it was a toset
2:17
not large in large area but because
2:20
where it was positioned and surrounded
2:22
by houses it was a very very sort of
2:24
dangerous sort of situation where a lot
2:26
of the houses could have got damaged but
2:28
the good response from the fire service
2:29
is were able to control it and it was in
2:31
a very small controlled area tell us a
2:33
bit about your team who you are they all
2:35
former firefighters no we do have a few
2:38
uh the majority of the guys a lot of
2:40
them are either ex Services a lot of EX
2:42
um Emergency Services back home or ex
2:44
military but then we have guys that have
2:46
never served in any sort of form before
2:48
but we train them up to work with us
2:50
you've got a lady firefighter as well we
2:52
do have a lady firefighter yeah Saina
2:54
absolutely um so the whole thing is
2:57
about the community then the France of
2:59
the golf club is concerned and also
3:01
looking after the club itself from a
3:02
fire prevention point of view Dave
3:04
absolutely um when when you live in an
3:06
area like we do that that is Forest it's
3:08
a constant it's a constant risk um that
3:11
something's going to catch go up and uh
3:13
spread quickly because it's dry and the
3:15
winds blowing and everybody's houses are
3:17
in the way um it's a it's a risk uh
3:20
constantly that you that you you
3:22
everything's everything's uh a
3:25
potential a potential Target for the
3:27
fire so seeing what would going on
3:30
around the golf course and especially
3:31
when we had my own local case at toset
3:34
spoke to the number of the number of the
3:35
guys in the golf society that I play in
3:38
the Jags at uh heavier golf club and we
3:40
we thought we would have an opportunity
3:42
to put on a golf day bring the community
3:45
into the golf club take the C Club to
3:46
the community raise money for the
3:49
firefighters raise the profile of the
3:51
firefighters um and have a an enjoyable
3:54
day doing the whole thing it's it's two
3:56
major bodies at the heart of the
3:57
community coming together to to to do
3:59
something so uh how do you make money uh
4:02
on a charity golf day um I guess you can
4:05
sponsor various holes and things like
4:07
that a lot of a lot of wrist twisting
4:09
and Chinese Burns really um we have
4:12
we've sold the sponsorship to eight out
4:15
of the nine holes so I'm still looking
4:16
for one sponsor for a whole at
4:18
€350 to put your flags and Banners and
4:21
maybe have a member of staff on the tea
4:23
giving local businesses can get involved
4:25
in that way we've had eight local
4:26
businesses um do it so far we're looking
4:28
for one more so we're charging um
4:31
sponsorship for the holes we're charging
4:33
the members an extra an extra chunk of
4:35
money to come and play in the golf day
4:37
we've been out to a number of local
4:38
businesses and had some fantastic
4:40
responses with um meal vouchers and
4:43
vouch raffle prizes and things well
4:45
prizes for the golf as well but raffle
4:47
prizes auction prizes and uh we have a a
4:50
steel band playing at the dinner dance
4:52
afterwards and um and a singer DJ okay
4:55
is it just for members or can people who
4:57
aren't members perhaps it's for members
4:59
and non-members um anybody that has a
5:01
handicap really I mean because uh one of
5:04
our sponsors has offered us €500 as a
5:06
first prize we need we need to make sure
5:08
that everybody's got a proper handicap
5:10
or there'll be fisty cuffs afterwards I
5:12
see I see and what will the money go to
5:14
raise or what will you buy with the
5:16
money Terry we were talking just briefly
5:18
before we came on air about the fact
5:19
that I guess in every fire you do lose
5:22
equipment through uh you know damage or
5:24
whatever equipment are we always going
5:26
to need things like hoses uh pistols
5:29
lances um pistol sorry pistols pistols
5:33
well basically the the fire hose oh the
5:35
bit that sprays okay call lances or
5:39
pistol I see um and then kit in general
5:42
it's like trousers jackets them type of
5:44
things boots we do go through quite
5:46
regularly and lucky enough we don't lose
5:48
many helmets but helmets now and again
5:50
will need need changing as well wow okay
5:53
so there it's just a constant ongoing
5:55
process it's continuous it's continuous
5:57
with getting and then the other thing is
5:58
the things for the trucks always things
6:00
for the trucks yeah and yes repair and
6:04
the rest of it um so has things got
6:07
better on the firefront we we were just
6:09
saying that we didn't haven't had as
6:10
many big fires so is is the prevention
6:13
better um is the awareness better are
6:15
you hearing about fires earlier than you
6:18
perhaps were before and indeed are the
6:19
fire brakes and things like that are
6:20
they has they come come together and got
6:22
better over the last I know working on
6:23
the idea to get some more fire brakes
6:25
done the fire brakes yeah they do work
6:27
and they do help in the situation a lot
6:29
more I think basically with the fires is
6:32
awareness more than anything else before
6:33
we used to have a lot of container fires
6:34
that were caused by barbecue as being
6:36
thrown away yeah regularly we've been
6:38
pretty lucky this year that I think it's
6:40
maybe only two we had but they're
6:42
actually the chimney so they were during
6:44
winter not during the summer uh also
6:46
people are a lot more aware when they're
6:47
going out when they're going out on
6:49
their walks however we still have
6:50
situations where fires are started by
6:52
cigarettes so it's people control
6:53
smoking when they're going out and
6:55
litter cuz the biggest problem that we
6:56
find in forests is bottles cuz a bottle
6:58
will act like a magnify a glass bottle
7:00
of course yeah even a plastic bottle
7:02
water do that too yeah oh God you
7:04
they're usually the big signs big causes
7:06
of lot of the fires as well okay luckily
7:08
we haven't seen too much of the
7:10
intentional fires which we have seen in
7:12
parts of Spain again this year yeah in
7:14
parts of Spain it has been in in this
7:16
area touching wood we've been pretty
7:18
much good with that type of situation I
7:20
think also the vigilance that with the
7:21
police do a lot more controls the guia
7:23
Civ are out doing a lot more patrols
7:25
ourselves do patrols as well as the
7:27
protection cill so I think with that
7:29
sort of visuals of people seeing us out
7:31
and about that also has control maybe
7:33
that type of mentality as someone wanted
7:35
to start a fight so we've not had a bad
7:37
summer or about because the Fire season
7:38
seems to have got longer and longer each
7:40
year it's it's stretching either side
7:42
isn't it um what would you have to say
7:44
to those um who are still going to be
7:46
around and and with us through September
7:48
and onwards it just maintain the control
7:50
especially when it comes to their
7:51
barbecues respect the red days when they
7:54
talk about a red day is when the map is
7:56
they put it down as red for and that
7:57
means there should be no open fires
7:59
what's
8:00
um barbecues is always a big issue with
8:02
things is they shouldn't never use wood
8:04
or coal gas fires depending on the
8:06
situation and depending on the day and
8:09
that' be the more safer option to take
8:11
but using wood is always a bad issue
8:13
especially with the
8:14
Sparks Dave um we're looking then to a
8:17
great day coming up what day is the uh
8:19
is this going to be held it's the 17th
8:21
of September which is a Tuesday it's
8:23
going to start at about 8:00 in the
8:25
morning and run on for the whole day at
8:27
the at the golf club great day full of
8:28
fun and how do people get involved is
8:30
there a contact if you contact UM me if
8:33
I'd leave you my email address um if you
8:35
contact me I can respond to uh provide
8:38

8:42

8:46

9:04
much thank you
