Tired of paying $750 or even $1000 for a smartphone? Maybe you don't actually need all those fancy bells and whistles, and a basic Android phone could do the job just fine. You can still text, run games, watch Netflix take funny selfies and capture video, but without the huge pricetag. That's the thinking behind the budget XGODY Mate 30 Android smartphone with its $118 price tag.
But is it any good? What are the drawbacks to a phone that's this affordable? Tech expert Dave Taylor of https://www.AskDaveTaylor.com/ unboxes a new XGODY Mate 30 and finds that it's a fine looking phone with some solid specs and, yes, some significant limitations, as you would expect at this price point. What's good and what's bad? Watch and find out...

A $100 Android phone? Let's see what's in the box
0:11
Dave Taylor here, and I have $118 Android phone. Okay, not quite $100, but pretty darn close
0:18
Which leads to the obvious question, is it any good? So, let's open the box and see what's inside
0:24
This is the X-GOTI, Mate 30 Android smartphone. And like I said, it's 118
0:29
$18.80. So in the box you get, as you would expect, the phone. And the phone, it's actually a pretty nice looking phone. So comes in its plastic package. And then there's all this protective film that you can take off. Actually, I will phrase that as you should take off. And so here we have it. And it's a very darn attractive looking phones. It's amazing what they can do at this price point. Right. So this is running Android 9
1:00
9.0, so it's pretty instant. Android 10's the latest, but most Android phones outside of the Google line, actually are running Android 9. So this is up to date. And it comes, it has a screen protector. It looks like it's already installed on it. So that's nice. And I haven't done any configuration or anything, though I played with it a tiny bit while it was still packaged just to charge it up. And speaking of which, it features a 2850 millimet hour battery. So it's going to get a
1:30
approximately a day. The forward facing camera, if I were to take a selfie, is actually a five
1:35
megapixel selfie camera and it includes beauty mode, which probably would be really helpful
1:42
Not exactly sure what that does, but I think it just makes things ever so slightly out of focus
1:46
so all those little wrinkles and stuff go away. So if you think that's important
1:51
it also, more importantly, supports face unlock, a $100 phone that supports face unlock, right
1:57
You don't need that $1,000 Apple iPhone, right? So does that. And then the rear facing camera it kind of interesting because as you can see in this close up it looks like there four camera lenses but it actually only one The other three are flash and focus and other accessories That an eight megapixel camera
2:15
So that's not bad, right? So here's the phone. Let's see what else is in the box
2:20
So let's see. Underneath that, we have, I really like when they do this
2:26
This saves you some money right off the bat. This is a clear case
2:31
So this means. you have a protective case. Now, one of the reasons these companies do this, you think
2:37
oh, that's super nice of them to do that. But it's because there's not much of a third-party
2:41
market for this particular phone, so it might be pretty hard to find a case for it. So with this
2:46
we have a perfectly sized case with a perfect cutout and everything. Now, also in here, I am wrong
2:53
there is not a screen protector, or maybe there is, and then they include a second one. So here's
2:58
a screen protector, too. Again, that saves you another 10 bucks or so. Nice
3:03
little instruction manual. And then we have a charging cable. And this charges off of, let's see what it's in here
3:13
This is USBC, right? And then they actually sent me the European edition
3:20
So they had to send me the American plug. I'm sure you wouldn't have that problem
3:24
because you would order the right one for your region. So here's just a regular old AC adapter
3:29
Honestly, don't really need that because if you're like me, you have plenty of things you can plug this into, including your computer, to charge it
3:37
But that's the whole deal, and that's the phone, and it comes with a lot of useful things
3:43
Let's see, it's powered by an MT 6737, 1.3 gigahertz quad core CPU with 32 gigabytes of on board storage
3:54
and you can put up to 64 gig microSD card somewhere here
3:58
And a quick view of the sides, there is a 3.5 millimeter
4:02
meter audio jack on the top. I still like having that audio jack personally. On the left
4:08
side it looks like this is support for the micro SD card with the tiny little device or tool they give you which is really like a fancy paperclip to pop it out as needed And then on the bottom there is indeed a USBC charger
4:23
So that's nice. Now, it does not support wireless charging. So there's a number of things that you might wish for that are not included
4:32
If I open this up, then here we are running Android. And I will say it's a 6.2 inch QHD 19 to 9 range
4:42
image so it's a nice looking screen but surprisingly the resolution is really low
4:48
that's probably the weakest point on this is only 1140 by 540 so that's a really
4:53
pretty low resolution screen but here's the amazing thing is that if you look at
4:59
stuff and I even have a couple of pictures I've experimented with but when you
5:03
look at things they actually look pretty good so you know it's not like you're
5:08
looking at it and you're immediately saying wow that's super fuzzy super
5:11
poor resolution. So it might be the case that you could get by with this and really not have any
5:16
issues at all. And the real thing here, of course, is that price point, that glorious $118 because that
5:24
means that this phone basically costs as much as the protection package does on your $1,000 super
5:30
fancy smartphone. So depending on who it's for and what it's for, this could be a very viable
5:36
alternative for you. And it does give you all of those fancy features with selfie
5:42
and, you know, high resolution pictures and everything. And just because the screen isn't high resolution doesn't mean that the images it captures aren't high resolution, you know
5:52
Obviously, this is an unboxing, so we're really focusing on all the stuff included with the phone
5:57
But I got to say, there's a real market for these lower-end phones
6:01
You know, for example, grandma or grandpa, right? Once and every couple of months, they, like, charge it up and they use it because they want to make a phone call
6:09
because they got to the airport and they're waiting for you to pick a mom. out, right? Otherwise, they don't like smartphones. Or teenagers or people that just lose their
6:17
darn phones all the time right Something like that A phone if you lose this or break this it is way less traumatic than a phone So yeah I kind of making the case that low price is the sort of key point here
6:33
Well, to some extent, it is. Otherwise, it's really all commodity elements, right
6:37
So it is actually a pretty smart looking phone. This is in the royal blue
6:43
I actually love this color. And I think the design is really cool and very striking
6:47
It is clearly not oleophobic because there's already fingerprints all over the back
6:53
but that's something you can easily solve with a wipe on your shirt or something, right
6:58
Let's see, get back to the home screen. Here we go. So it comes in emerald green or this royal blue or space gray
7:06
which sounds a whole lot like an Apple iPhone color. So it comes in those three colors, and I'll tell you where you can get it
7:13
but before I'm going to tell you that, I'm going to ask for you to subscribe to my channel
7:17
Yes, I get access to a lot of gear. I'm super honest about pros and cons and pluses and minuses
7:24
So go ahead and click that subscribe button and we can stay in touch. Cool
7:28
Now, this is the X-GOTI Mate 30 Android smartphone, and it comes in three different colors
7:35
and it's $118.80. Yes, $118 in the box with case and screen protector at X-GOTI.com
7:46
You really can't beat this. price. I think this might be the most affordable Android phone on the market other than buying
7:52
something used. So really nice. This would be a glorious present for like a tween or something
7:58
and I think they would be very happy to get this nice big screen. And if you didn't tell them
8:02
I suspect they wouldn't even notice the resolution issues. So that's all I got. Check it out further
