Ready for an external drive that's small enough you can slip it into your pocket but fast enough that you'll be startled at its performance? Of course you are! You're ready for the WD My Passport SSD, a tiny but super fast external hard drive with NVMe inside. Tech expert Dave Taylor of https://www.AskDaveTaylor.com/ hooked one up to his MacBook Pro (running MacOS 11 Big Sur, of course) and ran it through its paces, including running a speed test. The results? Fantastic. Check it out...
Then check out the WD My Passport SSD at https://amzn.to/2Ut9dnm

An external SSD that's tiny and incredibly fast. Let's check this out
0:13
Dave Taylor here and you know back in the old days this is what an external hard drive looked
0:18
like. This is a WD My Passport Pro and it's a couple of years old but this is what you had to
0:25
do to get a fast one terabyte drive. Well I would fling it off camera but it's kind of big and
0:32
heavy so we'll just put it aside because times change and technology improves dramatically
0:38
That's what we have here. This is the WD My Passport SSD and it's ridiculously fast and
0:45
insanely small. Let me pull it out. So you look at the box and you're thinking okay that's you know
0:51
not much smaller but check this out. That is a one terabyte SSD My Passport drive and it is
1:02
powered by super fast NVMe technology. What's NVMe? Glad you asked. That's non-volatile memory express
1:10
and it's a sort of really fast RAM that's designed specifically for this purpose so it's crazy fast
1:18
It clocks in super fast and perfect technology but this is up to a thousand and fifty megabytes
1:26
per second and then up to a thousand megabytes per second write. So the first number is the
1:31
read speed so it's a thousand and fifty megabytes a second read and a thousand megabytes a second
1:37
write. We're going to run some performance tests to see if we actually get these numbers but before
1:41
we go further I want to tell you that WD includes and you're saying what WD isn't that western
1:48
digital? So WD is the consumer version of their products just in case you get confused there. So
1:54
WD includes some encryption software for Windows or Mac which lets you access 256-bit AES encryption
2:03
for your drive if that's something that's important to you. I don't tend to enable that because I don't
2:08
need to because I never take these anywhere because it's kind of what it's like to be working from
2:12
home nowadays. Now comes with this there's no power needed it's just USB-C and I really like
2:20
this choice it's a USB-C to USB-C cable so easy enough you plug it into the back of the drive
2:27
and you are good to go. All right or if you need to for compatibility purposes and I've never seen
2:34
one of these before this is a USB-C to USB 3.2 adapter so this works with both USB-C and USB 3.2
2:47
so that's really handy you can just put this on the end and you're good to go with an older computer
2:52
but hopefully you have a modern computer and you are rocking that USB-C which is way faster and
3:00
there's USB 4.0 on the horizon but that's a whole other story we won't talk about that
3:04
So this is what it looks like right that is about as simple and tiny as it can get and this is shock
3:12
and vibration resistant you can drop it up to six and a half feet and it's going to be just fine
3:17
because it's basically solid state comes with a five-year limited warranty and let me give you
3:23
dimensions just because it's so fun it is three and a half inches by one and 0.7 inches by 0.39
3:31
inches and it's 1.6 ounces I am not kidding this just feels like three credit cards taped together
3:38
that's about the size and the thickness and the weight it's insane it's crazy small but is it
3:46
crazy fast well to find out we're going to get on my computer I have a MacBook Pro running the very
3:53
latest version of Mac OS 11 Big Sur and we're going to run some tests so let's spin it around
3:59
and get that all hooked up. Alright so we have that distinctive Big Sur background and I'm going
4:04
to open up our drive and you can see it comes with install software for the Mac and for Windows
4:12
and maybe stretch that out a tiny bit so you can see but what I really want to do is I want to show
4:17
performance so first off let's drag a 600 megabyte file off the drive onto the desktop and let's see
4:24
how long that takes and it's done I mean it's wacky fast right so all right what about going
4:32
onto the drive so this is another 600 megabytes and it's done so I mean you gotta laugh this is
4:40
just glorious so let's try something a little bigger let's try dropping 11 gigabytes onto here
4:46
and see how long that takes and you can see by this little dial here's our progress window finally
4:52
and it's under 10 seconds to drop 11 gigabytes onto there if you've suffered through any slower
4:59
drives you know just how fantastic that is I mean this is it's fun it's so fast that it's fun
5:06
it also means you can use it as a primary drive for things like video editing or your music library
5:13
or yes you could even use it as a steam library for data so that is pretty sweet now I also have
5:21
let me just launch this I have the Blackmagic Disk Speed Test and what the program does is it actually
5:28
tests a drive to see if it's fast enough to work with these really CPU and disk intensive programs
5:36
that video editors use you can see they're listed here ProRes Cinema DNG and TinPit UYV
5:44
YUV that's a tricky one so let me go ahead I'm going to pick the drive you need to select target
5:51
drive and there's my passport and open and so now we're going to just run this and the question is
5:59
that WD says that it can do up to a 1050 megabytes a second read and up to a thousand megabytes a
6:07
second write well let's see what happens when we actually test it and okay it's a smidge less but
6:15
I am perfectly happy with these numbers 936 megabytes a second on write and looks like
6:22
reads just a smidge slower which is interesting so 903 megabytes a second so there is nothing at
6:29
all to be embarrassed about with those numbers and you already saw on that performance test that
6:34
this is just entertainingly fast it's so fast on reads and writes that you will never go back to
6:40
an old drive so let me go ahead and just save a snapshot let's see stop and we'll save a snapshot
6:49
of what we did and I'll put that in my desktop and let me come back on camera and I'll give you
6:56
just some closing thoughts on this gloriously fast little SSD drive oh man that's so fast honestly
7:04
this is instantly just rocketed up to being my favorite external drive it's just fast it's big
7:11
there's so much to like about this now we do need to talk about the price but before we get to the
7:16
price I'm going to ask if you can subscribe to my channel I really appreciate that a click or a tap
7:21
on that little red subscribe button on the lower right and boom you're connected great thank you
7:27
now this well let me pull out the cable this is the WD my passport SSD it comes in gray which is
7:36
this color or red or blue and by the way it's gray on both sides so I assume the red and the blue
7:42
would be the same on both sides too and it comes in 500 gig one terabyte which is what this is
7:49
or two terabytes and the pricing is 500 gig is $89.99 one terabyte is $129.99 and two terabyte
8:01
is $229.99 now the idea and all of that's on amazon.com so the idea that I can have a terabyte
8:10
of data stored in this teeny tiny little thing that easily will slip I can demonstrate it slip
8:16
into my pocket how fantastic is that what a long journey from this and heck I remember drives before
8:22
this where they were even bigger so this is fantastic this is definitely something where
8:30
yeah you can find smaller drives you can find flash drives but not with this performance
8:35
this is screaming fast and it's definitely worth checking out whether you want to be working on
8:40
your video content whether you're an audio editor because you're a musician or something
8:46
whatever it is you're using your external drive for this will make it better faster stronger
8:52
more x powers whatever it is this is going to be more of that and that's a fantastic thing so this
8:59
again is the wd my passport ssd I'm in love with this piece of hardware and I hope if you
9:06
check one out that you will be too and with that I hope to catch you in my next video
9:29
you
