Want to add a security camera to your yard or some other spot where it's difficult to run a power line? No problem with this cool solar powered Soliom HD Security Camera [model S600]. With its big solar panel and substantial battery, this device will cover your security needs. The Soliom S600 also features remote tilt/pan/zoom features so you can adjust your viewpoint, even from hundreds of miles away. Support for both local triggered event video storage on a MicroSD Card and cloud storage of video footage is also integrated into the design, all managed from a handy smartphone app.
As tech expert Dave Taylor of https://www.AskDaveTaylor.com/ explains, however, there are some limitations to this device too, notably around nighttime motion triggered events and recordings. Still, for the price, it is an opiton you'll want to explore more.

A solar-powered security camera? Let's have a closer look
0:12
Dave Taylor here, and I got nothing on my table other than my phone
0:16
because what we're looking at today is the Solium solar-powered security camera, model S600
0:22
Let me cut away and you'll see exactly what it looks like
0:26
As you can see, it's a pretty big, substantial unit, and it has a nice, big solar panel
0:31
And the nice thing is, is you can tilt and adjust the solar panel to maximize the amount of sun it gets
0:37
which is important, because you want to use that for your power source
0:41
Now, let me tell you a little bit about it. It's Wi-Fi enabled, though it can run without your Wi-Fi being on once you get it configured
0:48
if you have a microSD card in. We'll come back to that in a second
0:52
It is battery-powered. Initially, you want to charge it with a wall charger
0:56
but then once you install it, as long as it gets some sun, it should be able to stay powered up all by itself
1:02
So that's pretty handy. It comes with a 9,000 mAh battery, and you can drop in an additional 18,000 mAh of battery capacity, if that works for you
1:14
So you could have, like, something where it's even, like, stuck in a tree or something, right
1:18
It is completely wireless. As long as it can get to your Wi-Fi network, it's fine
1:23
and you can access it, and you can get notifications, you can see what's live
1:28
and it has 320-degree horizontal, 160-degree lens, so it can really see a lot of what is, you know, what you're pointing at
1:37
And what's great is it actually has the ability for you to be able to pan, tilt, and zoom
1:44
But that means it's not a camera that just sits there. You can, from the app, actually change what's going on and where it's pointing
1:52
and even zoom in, so pretty slick, actually. So, it uses passive infrared sensors for motion activation
2:00
and you can turn on or off a nighttime spotlight. There's these four pretty darn bright LEDs, and that works out really well
2:08
So that's definitely something that's really nice, but I have it in a well-lit nighttime environment
2:13
because I have my porch light on all the time. So, I turn that off, doesn't really matter
2:19
It does color night vision, and it's supposed to be able to sense up to 32 feet
2:24
You can see there's these two dark red sensors at night that indicate that it's detected motion
2:31
Now, I did have some issues with it not always recording motion after it detected it at night
2:36
but that's another story. So, let's see. It can record in 720 or 1080p, and that's really nice
2:44
And it does a really typical thing for these devices. If you put in a microSD card, it can record straight to the card, which is great
2:52
and then you can access that data from the app, and I'll demonstrate that in just a second
2:57
But you can also pay for a cloud storage service, and then it'll automatically upload all the content to the cloud
3:05
I'm not a big fan of paying a subscription after I already have something installed
3:09
so I don't tend to do that, but you can opt to do that if that actually works better for you
3:14
I like having it in the card. I suppose if someone stole the unit, they'd steal the card
3:18
and I wouldn't have that video. Eh, que sera, sera. So, you can use up to 64 gig of microSD card, which is nice
3:27
and it can handle anywhere from minus 4 Fahrenheit to 140 degrees Fahrenheit
3:33
Now, we don't get Sub-Zero very often, but this next winter might be interesting
3:37
There might be a couple of nights where it's mighty cold for this. So, we'll see how that plays out
3:42
For now, it's been some hot days, and it's worked out just fine
3:46
Which brings us to the app. So, enough talking. Let's demonstrate this
3:51
So, it's a little confusing because it's a Soliom device, but it uses the U-Box app
3:56
And what I'm going to do is I'm going to actually just record the app
4:00
and then let you see it in a little window. So, you launch the U-Box app, which says UBIO, which is a little confusing
4:07
and then it shows you what's online. Let's get this to be a live view, so you'll see me actually recording
4:15
And, with any luck, let's see how this goes. Okay. So, there I am. Hi there
4:21
And you can see that I have notes and my camera, and I have an extra light and all that
4:26
But what's more interesting is that I can do things like I can zoom
4:30
and now I'm going to spin the inset around so you can see it in full glory
4:35
because now I want to show you how I can move the camera, right
4:39
So, I can move it out a little bit, and maybe turn it down a little bit
4:46
And all of this I'm doing from the app, so this is really cool. And then if I want to zoom in, I can do that too
4:52
And that's just pinch and zoom. Pretty standard stuff. And then I'll go back to where I was. One, two, and then up one
5:00
And if I wanted to, I could even zoom in a little bit there, and you can see that I'm just sitting here with shorts on
5:07
and there's my phone, and it's like Inception right there, right? So, more interestingly is if I go there
5:15
So, we go back here, and now I can actually tap on the little cloud
5:20
and now you can see that it shows me a tiny little card, and that card is actually where all the stored data is on the device
5:28
So, now I can scroll back, and I can say, hmm, what happened here
5:32
And we'll see. It takes a couple of seconds. It's actually getting the data from that micro SD card
5:38
and here I am setting up. So, that's cool. Now, you can go back. So, I have this fifth, the fourth
5:46
and I might go back here, and I might say, well, let's see what happened here
5:50
at 1.15 p.m. on the fourth, and again, it just takes a couple of seconds
5:56
and it'll show me the video. Now, this was interesting because this was a really windy afternoon
6:01
and it caused a lot of false triggers, and that was a little frustrating
6:05
So, I have the sensitivity set to medium, but it still gave me a lot of false triggers that day, so it goes
6:13
I also found, like I said earlier, that it doesn't always correctly trigger and record at night
6:19
So, I found nighttime to be a little bit hit or miss, which was frustrating
6:23
because it's in a great location, and it should work really well, but it doesn't
6:28
So, it goes. You can do two-way voice from the app, and finally, let me just show you real quick, here's the settings
6:35
So, there's a lot of different settings you can access, including how long a video you want to record
6:41
So, there's really a lot to like, and the price is really terrific for something that's completely wireless, self-contained
6:48
and has a built-in solar panel system for power. So, you know, you really can put this almost anywhere
6:54
as long as there's Wi-Fi, it's going to work. And for all I know, once you have it set up
6:59
you might be able to put it in the middle of absolutely nowhere, and it'll just record onto the card, and then every so often
7:04
you go and grab the card and see what it got. So, you could ostensibly use this for like, nighttime tracking animals
7:12
that are coming to your barn or something. Not sure that would work, but you could try it
7:16
Anyway, not much else to talk about but the price, because it is really remarkably inexpensive
7:21
And before we get to the price, I'm going to ask if you can subscribe to my channel
7:25
Really appreciate when you do that. And I give you the straight scoop on gear, as you can tell
7:30
You know, I'm telling you the good, and the not-so-good. So, please subscribe, it's really helpful
7:35
Now, that, which you can't see right now, is the Solium solar-powered security camera model S600
7:44
and it is a remarkably inexpensive $159 at Amazon.com. Now, if you've done any homework with any of these sort of security camera systems
7:54
that do Wi-Fi, and have motion sensors, and have solar panels, and give you the tilt-pan-zoom, or PTZ as they call it
8:03
then $159 is a pretty remarkably low price. Definitely worth checking out
8:08
So, with that, I'm going to get back to, I guess, watching myself on my phone
8:13
It's a little weird. Whatever. Anyway, I'll catch you in my next video
