Apple AirPods are very successful products, and deservedly so. But they're so darn expensive. That's why there's a thriving market for third party AirPods clones. Tech expert Dave Taylor of https://www.AskDaveTaylor.com/ got a chance to audition two pairs of MGET Pods i12 (or possibly inPods 12, depending on documentation) to see how they compare to the real Apple product. And the results were mixed at best. You'll definitely want to watch this review before making a purchase decision!

Apple AirPods for 30 bucks
0:02
Let's check these out. Dave Taylor here, and you know, if you have been looking at Apple AirPods, you know they're pretty spendy
0:17
But they come with some really cool circuitry and the build quality is insanely good
0:22
That's just kind of what Apple does. They have premium products at a premium price
0:27
But you can't help looking and thinking, I wonder if third parties could make something similar at a lower price point
0:34
Enter this. Well, let me do both of these. Enter these. These are the MGet Pods I-12 or in-pods I-12, depending on the packaging versus the promo material
0:49
And what they've tried to do is they tried to duplicate the functionality of the Apple AirPods
0:55
Unfortunately, with mixed results. But we'll get to that. Let me start with some specs
1:00
So first off, as you can see, they look pretty similar. And if I pull one out, it looks like what Apple would be selling
1:08
In fact, let's compare. So here, these are actual Apple AirPods. And you can see that the units themselves look very similar
1:20
These are a little longer than the actual Apple product. And the cases look ridiculously the same
1:26
I mean, like they could have come off. the same mold right and the bottom has a lightning connector for charging and
1:35
everything they are mighty similar but unfortunately they don't have the same
1:40
functionality or the same sound but we're gonna get back to that in pods i12
1:45
Bluetooth 5.0 touch controls so when you have it in your ear you can touch once or
1:51
double touch or triple touch this whole complicated language of touches which
1:57
works pretty well they have good range I will say that 30 feet, I can walk all around my house and leave my phone sitting somewhere
2:05
And they actually work pretty well in that regard. You can use them in mono or in stereo, which is great because if you have one where the charge is going
2:15
you can pull it out, put it into the case to charge a little further while you're still listening with the other one
2:20
It's a nice feature. They have very little latency but their quality for making phone calls is pretty low When I tried using these for a phone call it was as if I was at the end of a tunnel
2:34
and it was really hard for the person on the other end to hear me. That's a minus, because one of the things that Apple did really well is their design is really good for phone calls
2:44
In fact, if you never listen to music, these are still a preferred way to make phone calls
2:49
versus actually holding your phone up, preferably with this direction, holding your phone up to your ear
2:55
So, there's that. Now, they give you somewhere around two or three hours of listening time on a charge
3:01
depending on how loud you have them. That's true of all wireless devices
3:05
And then you get about three charges out of the case. So that's not bad
3:10
And then dimensions-wise, you can see they're almost exactly, just a tiny bit taller
3:16
than the Apple AirPods and same with the buds themselves. So what's the difference
3:24
The difference is in the functionality. So they sent me two pair
3:28
And I want to point out right off the bat that the packaging is different
3:32
This one has the little cutouts for the hands and this one does not, right
3:37
And it's just like, hmm, that's interesting. And it turns out that these are two different models
3:43
And as you can see here, they actually identify. I am Bluetooth as different devices, which I was really surprised by
3:50
So the blue version, I couldn't get to come up with the automatic pairing
3:55
but the pink version, as you can see in this video, eventually agreed with my phone and then paired as if they were brand new AirPods
4:04
This is a nice reverse engineering on their part. But still, you know, it's like, I want the sound
4:11
So here's what happened. So the pink ones, the right earbud continually complained that it wasn't charged, which was frustrating
4:19
because with the blue ones, they were doing fine and they charged well and they paired super quickly to each other
4:26
except the left ear kept dropping out. So if I had my phone here, the left ear would drop out
4:32
But if I had my phone here, the left ear would be fine and the right ear would be fine
4:36
So I don't really know what that's about because the company says that your left ear is the dominant
4:42
device So this is what pairing and then this is connected to this right So it a little tricky to do that true wireless stereo but they not quite there So the pink ones didn work very well because the right one kept complaining about battery and turning off And that was after I like put it in here for hours and everything
5:02
And then the blue one, the left ear just kept dropping out. And it's like between the two of them, I really wanted a good experience
5:08
And when I finally got them to work in stereo, they sound really nice, actually
5:13
So, you know, that's the frustration. They are at a really remarkably low price point so low that if you lose them
5:20
I would ever get another pair, right? But they just don't quite work right
5:24
Now, I've seen other people's reviews of these products, and they think they work great
5:28
and I don't know, maybe I got two bum units, but the company assured me they did all their QA
5:33
before they sent it, and I'm like, all right, well, this is just going to, I'm going to have to
5:38
assume this is what a regular customer experience would be. So, lots to like
5:43
There's lots they got right, except they didn't quite get it all right
5:47
And that ends up being a problem, because if you're going to be a problem, because if you're going to going to get these, you're not going to be willing to say, hey, you know, if one ear drops out
5:55
or if one's not charging, or if things aren't pairing, whatever, I don't care, as long as it
5:59
eventually works a little bit, right? No, what you want is you want to duplicate the extraordinary
6:04
experience of the Apple AirPods at a much lower price point. And that's hard to do. There's a reason
6:12
Apple charges a premium price, and it's not just to pad their profit margins. It's because they use
6:17
really top quality components, which experience, you know, which translates into a really great
6:24
experience when you're using them. Now, I had AirPods for years, and I just recently upgraded to
6:31
the AirPods Pro. AirPods Pro, super awkward name, but they're amazing. I never have any problems. I never have
6:38
one ear working in the other one not. I never have any questions about charge levels. Everything
6:44
just works incredibly smoothly. It's beautifully, you know, paired up with the experience of iOS
6:50
on an iPhone, but these are not that level, even though they look, gosh darn similar. Now
6:57
it is true of the Apple product, and it's certainly true of these. You can use these on any
7:02
Bluetooth device. So if you have an Android phone, you can get these, use these with your Android
7:06
phone, and pretend you have the new pink version of the Apple AirPods. As long as you're willing to roll
7:13
the dice and risk the possibility that they don actually work right for you So kind of a frustrating experience Not much else I have to say I mean I wish they worked better because the pieces are there The sound quality is there But the pairing is clumsy and the charging
7:32
is awkward and the fact that they don't stay paired to each other so that I always have a stereo
7:38
experience. That kind of immediately disqualifies them. So I really can't recommend them even at their
7:44
price point. But let's talk about the price. However, before we get there, I'm going to ask if you
7:48
can subscribe to my channel. As is really obvious, I am super honest. I am not going to just hype
7:54
products up because companies send them to me. Hooray, right? I'm not that YouTuber. I'm the one
8:01
who's willing to let the company get mad at me because I want to give you the straight scoop
8:06
So you should subscribe so we can stay in touch and you can find out more straight, honest, and
8:11
legit reviews. Okay. So these are the MGet in pods or pods I-12 and they are 3399 minus 10
8:24
because there's a 10% promo. It gets them to $30. If you leave them in your shopping cart
8:29
you get a 30% off. You can get these down to like 25 bucks with free shipping
8:36
25 bucks. You know, if only I could buy these for 25 bucks, but that ain't an option
8:41
So you have these third party alternatives and these, you know, you might get really lucky and you might get the pair that are just perfect and they work great and you're super happy with them
8:53
But neither of these two accomplish that for me. So you're going to have to decide if you want to go for it
9:00
So they come in black, white, pink, blue, green and yellow. I really love the colors
9:05
I wish they worked better. I really do. So somewhere between 3399 down to the 20 something
9:11
at madgenius et.com. I don't know if I'm pronouncing the domain right
9:16
but you can see it on the screen. That's all I got. You know what I'm going to do
9:20
I'm going to go back to my actual AirPods. And that means that once I get them plugged in
9:26
all right, I will catch you in my next video
