Admit it, your phone charges really slowly when plugged into your car's USB port. A better move: The Joyroom 60W USB Car Charger pushes out a maximum of 30W on both its USB-A and USB-C ports, offering a far faster charge. Works with iPhones, Android, Nintendo Switches, and anything else that needs power. Tech expert Dave Taylor tested it out and found some interesting results, including whether it could charge a MacBook Pro!

This tiny USB car charger is a game changer
0:03
Let's check it out. Dave Taylor here, and if you're like me, you not only have your own device that probably needs charging while you're driving
0:18
but you have passengers that also have devices that need charging. Problem is, most cars have a single USB port, and that's not very helpful
0:28
Or they have multiple USB ports, but they're all USBA, or they're all really low wattage
0:35
So it just takes forever. I have some where I've driven cars where I plugged in my phone, and when I get to my destination, it's like 1% more charged
0:44
Not very helpful. Enter this. This tiny little device, it's only 1.85 inches deep
0:51
This goes into your 12-volt outlet or a plug. Used to be called the cigarette lighter plug
0:57
They don't call it that anymore. And this is the Joy Room 60 watt USB car charger
1:04
And as you can see in this closeup, it has a USBA port and a USBC port
1:10
I will tell you the USBC port is the absolute winner here
1:14
They both theoretically deliver 30 watts. But as I'll show you with my testing, it didn't actually work out that way
1:21
I found the USBA charging port to be a little bit lower wattage
1:25
whereas the USBC was a rock star. So the USBA is using something called Quick Charge 3.0
1:34
So it has a theoretical maximum of 30 watts, but it negotiates with the device you're charging
1:40
so that it can give the maximum wattage. And your device might say, whoa, 10 watts is even more than I can handle
1:47
and it'll step down. Now, the USBC has a different system called power delivery or PD
1:54
And that also has a maximum of 30 watts. So it's 30 plus 30 equals 60 if you're wondering about that number
2:02
And so your power delivery device might actually say, oh, I can't handle 30
2:06
I'm going to top out at 20, and it will deliver 20 watts. So all of that is to do with like heat management and everything
2:13
and maximizing the value and the lifespan of your batteries. All of that's really good
2:18
Now, they say this can be up to 10 times faster than a 2.4 amp charger
2:24
which is probably what you have built into your car. All I know is that especially with this USBC plug
2:31
this is really going to speed up your charging. Like you plug in your phone and by the time you get there
2:37
your phone is double the charge That is so nice And one of the things that smart is it an all metal design It looks plasticy but it all metal So that really helps with heat dissipation Now it does have
2:49
circuitry for overcurrent, over voltage, overheating, and short circuit. In all those cases
2:54
it will just stop delivering power, which is exactly what you want. But let me jump into my car for a second
3:01
and I'll show you a little bit about how this all plugged in and how it all works together
3:05
So here's the Joy Room USB charger, and I'm going to go ahead and put it into my little charging port
3:11
That's a little tricky. And then I have the, let's see, USBA to USBC
3:21
So I'm going to plug that one into the USBA port. And unwind it a little bit
3:28
And that goes like this. So that's ready to go. I'll put it aside
3:35
And then I have the USBC to USB that they shipped. So I'm going to put that in the USBC port
3:45
There we go. So now we have both. And I just happen to have two phones in my pocket
3:52
So both of them use USBC for charging. So I'm going to use the USBC to USBC charging for my iPhone
4:01
and then the USBC to USBA for my pixel. Now, let's start the car
4:12
And the first thing I hope you can see is the really cool lighting
4:18
And I really like that rainbow lighting. But what I also noticed is that you can't really tell with my iPhone
4:25
but the very tip of this actually lights up when you're using it too
4:30
which is pretty cool. you know hides that but so right now I am charging both devices simultaneously
4:38
which is pretty darn handy now I want to show you that I thought wouldn't it be
4:45
interesting to see if I could charge my Macbook Pro so what I did was I actually
4:50
plugged it straight into my Macbook Pro and then I thought oh well if we go into
4:56
system report we can actually see how much wattage it's getting and that was
5:00
super interesting Now, let me jump back on camera and I'll tell you about all of my findings and how fast or slow the charging was
5:08
Let's go back inside. It's pretty clumsy to record in a car, so I'm back here
5:13
Now, let me explain a little bit about the methodology of what I used and then I'll tell you the results
5:18
So first off iPhone 15 Pro and this uses USBC instead of lightning which was very helpful with this testing And a Google Pixel 6 Pro which also uses USBC for charging
5:32
And then I have my MacBook Pro. So those were the devices I was using for testing
5:38
And with the iPhone, when I plugged it in using my own cord, USBA to USBC
5:45
I don't know what the rating of this cord is, but it should certainly deliver 30 watts
5:49
it did pretty good. It delivered a 44% charge in an hour. Now, when I used the actual built-in or included
5:59
I should say, Jory Room 3.3 foot 60-watt USBC to USBC cable, then it actually bumped it up a little bit
6:08
so then I was getting a 48% charge in an hour. So I was a little bit faster for the iPhone
6:14
Now, for my pixel, it got 48% in an hour off of the USBC
6:19
plug on this. I didn't try charging it on the USBA, but one can assume that the numbers are going to be
6:25
pretty similar. So that means you're getting about a 50% charge in an hour, and that's not bad
6:32
And then I thought, hmm, well, if we're doing all this, let's see if we can plug in and charge
6:38
my MacBook Pro. Now, it turns out that devices like this can charge off of really low wattage
6:43
You really just need to turn it off and let it sit. So in an absolute crisis, you can charge it
6:49
even as low as 10 or 5 watts. It's just going to take forever, but it's something
6:54
So I plugged it in first off the USBA cable, or a plug
7:00
and then as you can see in this picture, System Report showed me that it was getting 8 watts from the Joy Room charger
7:09
And I thought, hmm, let me try a different cable. So I tried two different cables, and in all three cases
7:15
I got that same 8 watts off of the USBA plug. Now, my theory is that the MacBook Pros just don't speak quick charge 3.0
7:24
So there was a loss of communication and the device just simply deferred to its lowest safe charge
7:32
which was that 8 watts, which realistically isn't enough to do anything useful in terms
7:37
of charging my MacBook Pro. But when I then said, let's try their 60 watt rated cable USBC to USBC using power delivery
7:48
it was an absolute rock star. And boom, it was at 30 watts, as you can see in this
7:52
And that 30 watts means that I could plug my computer in
7:56
Just let it sit on the passenger seat, leave it plugged in. And then when I get to my destination, I have more charge
8:03
Am I going to have a lot of charge in a short amount of time No because this thing can handle 100 watts or more for its charger So 30 watts is a lot lower down in that power delivery But it still pretty
8:16
cool that this thing is powerful enough that you can charge a laptop or a tablet. You're not just
8:22
constrained to smartphones. But be that as it may, as long as you understand its parameters
8:28
this is a terrific addition to your setup. And what I will also note is that it's also
8:34
very, very reasonably priced, and that's pretty darn important too. So this is the Joy Room 60-watt
8:41
USB car charger. It is a very nice little device. It is definitely one worth checking out
8:47
Now, let's talk about price, but before we get to the price, I'm going to invite you to subscribe
8:53
to my channel. Click or a tap on the subscribe button. Go ahead and give me a thumbs up or a comment
8:58
And don't forget to click on that bell icon so you get notifications as I release new
9:04
and I'm reviewing gear all the darn time. I never, never don't have a backlog. Is that a proper and double negative? Anyway, I always have a backlog. I always have lots of gear to look at. So it is no different right now. So you really want to subscribe and you really want to turn on notifications so you can keep up. Cool. This is the Joy Room 60-watt USB car charger with both USBA and USBC and it is 26
9:34
69, discounted down to 1888, and currently with a 25% additional discount, dropping it down to
9:43
a ludicrously inexpensive, $14.16 at Amazon.com. So whatever price you can get it at
9:51
this is a beautiful stocking stuffer. It's a nice little box. Remember, it comes with that
9:56
cable too, so it is all ready to go. But most importantly, for all of your friends and family
10:02
that are using little car chargers like this. In fact, all three of my kids use these sort of devices
10:07
This is going to give them a faster charge, which will make them happier human beings
10:12
And if you use one of these yourself, bumping it up to something with a higher wattage output
10:17
will be a miraculous experience, and you'll just be also a happier human being
10:22
So definitely one to check out. It will bring you joy. And that's really all I got
10:27
So I'll catch you in my next video
