Azure provides free forever tier for MS SQL DB and also 12 months free MySQL DB. Both are decent free offer. If you are looking for some free DB resources, you might want to check this video. It is easy to get and the free tier is still powerful enough for a small project.
This video also provides a way to use low code platoform AppSmith to connect to those DB servers for creating your own App.

Hello everyone, welcome back to my
0:12
channel NetSack. In this video, we going
0:15
to explore free Azure database services.
0:20
So if you go to list URL you will find
0:24
out those free services two type of
0:28
always free or 12 months free in each
0:32
offline you will find out the different
0:34
types of free services the one we focus
0:37
on will be database services there's
0:41
always free databases we going to
0:44
explore this one SQL database MSQL
0:47
database so we will get 10 databases.
0:50
Each of them will have 32 gig by storage
0:54
and 100,000 vehicles second. That's for
0:58
MSSQL. If you want to look at the my SQL
1:04
then that's a 12 months free databases
1:08
for MySQL
1:10
which we will explore that too. You get
1:12
750 hours flexible server burst B1MS
1:17
instance 32 gig storage 32 gig backup
1:20
storage and for 12 months.
1:23
If you watch my video before then you
1:26
will see I have quite a bit free Azure
1:30
services introduced before like free
1:34
tier VMs how to run that get free
1:37
account
1:39
and you can deploy free services
1:44
more important if you don't have
1:46
Microsoft 365 EI subscription [snorts]
1:50
you can get some of them from here from
1:52
those videos. Subscribe my channel to
1:55
get more update in the future. If I
1:58
found any more interesting and free
2:00
stuff, I will put into my channel and
2:03
share with everyone here. So now let's
2:05
go to the Microsoft Azou. We're going to
2:07
explore those Azure SQL database and
2:10
Azure MySQL free services.
2:18
To start with Azure SQL, you can search
2:23
from the top text box here. Just search
2:26
type Azure SQL. Then you should be able
2:30
to get this Azure SQL. Select for it.
2:33
Then you can create in the database from
2:37
here. Um I want to show you this FAQ
2:41
first before you want to use it. Just uh
2:45
take a quick look what's included in
2:49
this free offer. What you cannot do.
2:53
For example, you cannot restore a
2:55
database to a free offer database and
2:59
it's not for the production usage
3:03
because there's no SLA associated with
3:06
it. But you do able to upgrade to a
3:10
larger or more powerful database.
3:14
So take a quick look here. I will post
3:17
the link in the video description.
3:20
For now, we're going to start into
3:22
creating a SQL database. It's very
3:25
simple, easy, straightforward. Um I will
3:28
quickly go through it and more important
3:31
later on I will show you how to connect
3:34
to it using some applications.
3:38
Okay. Now we coming to create a new
3:41
database SQL database.
3:43
To get the free SQL database, you need
3:46
to see this offer. Just make sure you
3:50
apply offer here. Free offer applied.
3:53
You get 100,000 recall second and 32 GB
3:58
data and 32 GB backup. And it's for
4:02
lifetime of your subscription.
4:06
To create SQL database, choose your
4:09
subscription. That's the only one I have
4:11
as you for default resource group. I
4:15
will create a new one. I will create in
4:18
MSSQL free. So I know this is a free
4:21
MSQL resource group. Database name. We
4:27
don't have a server. Um you if you
4:30
choose this select server. So you will
4:32
get
4:34
server here. Create a new server. Enter
4:36
server name. I cannot do east US here.
4:41
Um, we're going to do west US2.
4:46
So, I put the server name here. So, we
4:48
know which region we created our server.
4:50
So, let's name convention. You can have
4:52
your own name convention here.
4:56
I'm going to use both SQL and the
4:57
Microsoft entry authentication. I'm
5:00
using myself as admin. You can change
5:04
that later on, but you can only have
5:06
one. So for this one I'm going to choose
5:09
MSSQL
5:10
DB admin
5:13
password.
5:15
Okay.
5:17
Now you get your free server.
5:21
Here is a behavior when free offer limit
5:25
reach it. So usually if it's not
5:27
production
5:28
or to pause. because there's a 100k
5:32
vehicle second for your testing purpose,
5:36
your home project. This should be
5:38
enough. So that's why we choose auto
5:42
pause the database until next month
5:44
because it's a for our lab environment
5:48
backup storage redundancy. There's no
5:51
option here to create. We can go to next
5:55
tab networking. I do need to connect it
5:58
from internet. So that's why I creating
6:02
public endpoint.
6:04
I'm going to allow a ZU service and the
6:06
resource to access this server. If you
6:09
don't want it, you can keep it as
6:11
default. No. Uh I also want to allow my
6:14
current IP address to access to it. This
6:17
going to create a new L in your database
6:20
firewall to allow my current IP to
6:24
connect to it on a port.
6:27
Minimum version 1.2. This is standard
6:32
security. If you want to try defender
6:35
for SQL, you can start this free trial.
6:39
But after 30 days, you're going to be
6:40
charged $15 US per server per month. You
6:44
can leave it there. Most of those stuff
6:46
you can keep default always encrypted.
6:50
Same. We don't have to enable on but
6:53
it's possible to enable always encrypt
6:56
option.
6:57
I will keep it default. Let's change no
7:01
basically no change on this tab. Go to
7:04
next tab. Keep the default as well.
7:08
Review and create. So here is the thing.
7:11
You can see the cost summary. How much
7:14
you're going to spend it per month. As
7:16
you can see it's completely free.
7:21
Since we are in the limitation 32 gig
7:24
storage on the L 100K V call second on
7:28
the L there's no cost then we can create
7:31
it.
7:42
So deployment is in progress. It going
7:44
to take a while. So, I'm going to stop
7:46
my video and we'll come back once it's
7:49
done.
7:51
Now, let's go back to MSSQL database
7:56
deployment. We started around 10:10
7:59
today and it's completed. So, let's look
8:02
at the deployment details.
8:08
So, we can go to resources.
8:13
Right now it's 10:23.
8:17
So basically it took less than 30
8:21
minutes. So I would say probably around
8:23
10 minutes it's completed.
8:27
Then we can go to resource.
8:34
You can see this pricing tier is free
8:36
general purpose serless
8:39
over age billing is disabled.
8:44
You can monitoring the usage 20 megabyte
8:47
being used
8:58
features. [snorts]
9:04
You can also set up the server firewall.
9:08
You can add the public IP which you want
9:11
to allow. I already have this
9:14
added here. So when I choose add
9:17
calendar IP then this r been automatic
9:20
created
9:25
SQL database.
9:36
You can connect to it from here.
9:45
You can see some
9:48
system views this we haven't created any
9:52
tables
9:53
and any record here. So it's empty.
9:58
So now we have done our creation. It's
10:03
very simple and easy to do which can get
10:06
you a very I would say still very
10:09
powerful MSQL database in the cloud for
10:12
you to use for free forever.
10:20
We're going to create our own free Azure
10:23
database for my SQL flexible server.
10:29
You can find the more explanation from
10:32
this
10:34
learn.microsoft.com
10:36
page.
10:38
Uh you will see this free 12 months
10:40
offer once you got the Azure free
10:42
account.
10:44
You can use a flexible server for 12
10:48
months free. There's some limitation.
10:50
It's 750 hours and it's only B1MS
10:56
and 32 gig storage. 32 gig for backup.
11:02
You can try it for free. As I said, here
11:05
is a guide how you can create it. Uh
11:08
we're going to follow this guide to
11:10
create our free MySQL server.
11:15
So basically the same you just need to
11:17
search my SQL you will get some services
11:21
match the name MySQL. Doesn't matter you
11:24
choose MySQL flexible servers or MySQL
11:27
servers. Uh you always can create it
11:32
flexible server here. Let's do quick
11:34
create. We select default settings. You
11:38
will see it's going to cost you around
11:41
514
11:42
per month which is pretty expensive.
11:46
Now we're going to create our free one.
11:48
Uh we're going to create a new resource
11:51
group. We call it MySQL 31.
11:56
We're going to create server name.
12:00
We're going to call it MySQL
12:03
DB admin. For workload type, of course,
12:07
we're going to choose dev test.
12:10
This will dramatically drop your cost to
12:13
$14 per month.
12:17
You can add a firewall lure for current
12:19
IP. Same as we did the MSSQL server. We
12:22
don't have high availability here. As
12:25
you can see, we got a standard B1MS
12:28
which is matching the requirement for
12:31
free and the storage we are less than 30
12:34
GB. So we should be able to eventually
12:38
even it shows USD4.71
12:40
per month but eventually the charge is
12:44
zero because we are under the limitation
12:47
here on the 30 gigabyte for storage and
12:51
we are using a B1MS
12:55
review plus create.
12:58
It's going to take five minutes to be
13:00
created this server. And here is more
13:03
information.
13:06
Just before we create it, I want to go
13:08
back to show you one thing. You can use
13:11
advanced create which going to get you
13:14
more control on those settings. So I
13:17
want to use that. So same thing we're
13:19
going to use in my SQL3-1
13:23
as name server name. Right. SQL you're
13:27
going to do rest US again
13:31
rest US2
13:33
you're going to choose dev test. So that
13:35
will change our compute VM to B1MS type.
13:43
You can configure server but as a dev
13:47
test machine to be on the free
13:50
limitation. So this is best we can get
13:54
BMS.
13:56
So we can save that.
14:00
You can do MS MySQL and Microsoft entry
14:03
authentication.
14:05
I'm going to just use a MySQL
14:07
authentication.
14:10
Next do networking public access the
14:13
port 3306.
14:16
Remember that we can add calendar IP
14:19
address. allow public access to this
14:21
server. So we're going to allow this.
14:25
I'm going to allow calendar IP. If you
14:29
have internal server to want to access
14:32
to it, you can add a private endpoint
14:36
but we will keep it default.
14:39
All those will be default. Data
14:42
encryption key we're going to use in
14:43
service managed key. We don't have our
14:46
we don't have to create our own key. tax
14:49
review create and it's five minutes for
14:52
creation
14:55
again it's here shows us $14
14:59
per month but since we are under the
15:04
limitation
15:06
so it's going to be free I'm going to
15:08
hold for here once it's done I will come
15:11
back to continue while my SQL database
15:15
deployment completed
15:17
you can look at deploy deployment
15:19
details here.
15:28
Current time is 10:28.
15:31
So right now it's 10:28.
15:35
So in less than 10 minutes it has been
15:37
created.
15:40
You can go to resource.
15:42
You can look at database,
15:47
my SQL. There's a connection details.
15:52
You can look at networking here.
15:55
Um, we already allowed the public access
15:58
from my current IP.
16:01
That means we should be able to connect
16:03
to it.
16:09
Now we're going to from our own machine
16:12
Windows PowerShell window to test the
16:16
port 3306
16:19
on my SQL server and also we're going to
16:22
test it
16:26
the MSSQL as well. We're going to use
16:29
those connection string and then test
16:31
those connection out from PowerShell
16:34
window. This is our MySQL connection.
16:37
That's a server host name
16:40
here and port 3306.
16:45
Right away we got uh the IP address.
16:48
It's been resolved. Port 3306 from my
16:51
Wi-Fi interface. That's my local IP. The
16:55
TCP connection is succeed. If you test
16:59
other port,
17:02
let's test 3307 which isn't open. So we
17:07
shouldn't get us anything
17:10
failed.
17:11
We're going to do same thing. We're
17:13
going to test our MSSQL.
17:16
We got our SQL server
17:19
name here and port is 1433.
17:26
This is 3306.
17:28
1433 is MSQL server port. So we're going
17:32
to do that
17:34
1433
17:37
name resolution is failed because we
17:39
have TCP here.
17:43
It's true because we allowed our public
17:46
IP to access to it. Same thing we're
17:49
going to test the 1434. You will see
17:51
very interesting. This also open 1434.
17:55
This is um by default is also available
18:00
but not for 1435
18:03
it's false. Okay. So we test it. We have
18:06
our database in the cloud and the
18:09
database port is open to public to
18:12
access it. As soon as we have firewall
18:15
open the lure we should be able to reach
18:16
it. So now we're going to use a cloud
18:19
database management tool to access to
18:21
it.
18:26
I'm going to use appsmith this cloud no
18:30
code application platform to connect to
18:34
our database. If you don't have any
18:36
other better cloud management cloud DB
18:40
management tools this might be and can
18:42
help you. Uh you can start for free uh
18:45
we can do self-hosted using docker or
18:48
you can use a cloud version. And I'm
18:51
going to use in cloud since it's much
18:53
easy. I already logged in. Uh so I'm
18:56
going to use same one which I played
18:59
with before. Uh this one we can delete
19:02
it.
19:05
So we I created the my workspaces. Then
19:08
we can create your application
19:16
and you need to I put a table here. You
19:18
need to connect your data. So we can
19:21
connect a new data source. Here is uh
19:25
actions. So for the data sources, this
19:28
is very interesting. You can see it
19:30
supports most of what all kinds of data
19:32
sources even your own data sources. Um
19:36
so there's a MySQL and uh also MSSQL
19:41
both supported
19:43
including
19:45
Oracle last shift three data bricks or u
19:49
my SQL elastic search dynam
19:54
um post gray SQL all those SQL database
19:58
um you know then you can add it in
20:03
so we're going to try MySQL
20:06
connect to it standard you can put your
20:09
MySQL host address but just make sure
20:12
you need to add those two white two
20:15
public IP in so we're going to do that
20:18
for both MSQL and my SQL
20:24
setup server firewall add
20:28
IP
20:31
so that will allow appsmith to connect
20:34
to it same thing on my SQL networking.
20:38
So this shows you how to create your
20:40
firewall lure.
20:43
Now we can connect it. We started with
20:45
my SQL. So let's do SQL connect. So we
20:51
need to save it.
20:54
Same thing.
20:58
Save it.
21:02
We need to get our my SQL string here.
21:11
This is our host name.
21:14
Port number is default.
21:17
Database name. We need to create. We
21:19
need to have a database name.
21:22
We're going to add our new database
21:24
here.
21:26
Let's do test one.
21:30
Save. Those
21:33
are system database. So we're going to
21:35
put the as the one here. My SQL
21:40
username password
21:43
test connection. It says failed. We
21:46
cannot connect to it.
21:49
Let's make sure all connection
21:51
parameters are correct.
21:56
Required.
22:00
Well, now it test was successful. So, we
22:02
can connect to it.
22:04
So, that's one way how you can connect
22:06
to your database. You can test it out
22:09
from outside of your regular database.
22:27
You can create a new query.
22:30
We're going to connect into our MSQL
22:33
database.
22:35
Um, we got our connection strings. Um,
22:39
from here you can from either of them
22:42
you should be able to get the server
22:44
name, database name, username or sins
22:48
port. Come on to our new application.
22:53
This uh data source. So you see the data
22:56
source. We create a myq. We're going to
22:58
create a new one for SQL server.
23:03
Now we need to put the
23:06
IP should be same as we put in before.
23:18
So those two IPs we already in. And then
23:21
we can go to the database
23:25
connection string.
23:30
You can do read only or read or write
23:32
doesn't matter. We are testing it.
23:37
So we get um server name.
23:41
We get the database name.
23:49
Then we got the username
23:54
and then password
23:56
SML you can put uh enabled there with no
23:58
verification
24:00
test connection.
24:03
Yeah, your database to data source is
