10 Worst States to Be Poor in America. Let’s talk about the worst states to live in poverty here in the USA. Living below the poverty line in the United States or any country for that matter sucks. The states on this list suck a little more. Poverty in the united states has been bad for decades. The poverty rate for 2020 was around 12% to 15% depending on the study you look at. That means somewhere between 45 and 50 million Americans are living in poverty. I am in no way talking down to people living in poverty. I think it should be one of the top things we should fix as a nation. The United States is one of the richest countries on the planet, we shouldn't have as many people as we do living below the poverty line.
