Hey, the fellow hungry travelers, Marky with Walters World, and today we're here in Savannah, Georgia
0:04
and we've been eating ourselves silly for the last week. But there's something I noticed
0:09
There's three really traditional Savannah foods that tourists miss out on when they come to Savannah
0:15
And the thing is, it's not something that people want you to have. It's just it's not something that usually shows up in a lot of restaurants, okay
0:21
And the first thing I want you to tell you about is a low country boil. Now, some restaurants will have it, and they'll be like, oh, it's got shrimp and some corn and potatoes and sausage
0:30
Yeah, but the thing is, when you're here in Savannah, that's not how you eat it. You don't eat it at the restaurant
0:34
What you do is you have a low country boil with all of your friends coming over. You have the big pot and you put in the potatoes in there and the corn goes in there and the sausage going there
0:43
And the end you have the shrimp, the spices, all this kind of stuff that cooks up
0:47
When you finish it, you literally drain the water out and then you put down newspaper on a table
0:52
like a kitchen table or a picnic table. And you go out with your friends and you just dump it out on the table on the newspaper and you share it with your friends It one of the greatest ways to really enjoy times with friends here in Savannah is to have a low country boil And if you just going to be staying here you can do it at your apartment rental or at your home renter or your vacation rental
1:08
You can do it to have the experience. Because honestly, a true low country boil is really a true Savannah thing
1:14
Yes, you'll see versions of it at some restaurants, but honestly, having it and do it when you're here, you're going to love it
1:19
Also, down below there's a link for Jocelyn. She has her own recipe for making it
1:23
and she did it out on Tybee Island, okay? Now, the second thing you might miss out on when you come here is actually hot boiled peanuts
1:30
Yes, try not to say that and laugh. Okay, hot boiled peanuts is really a thing here in Georgia and in the South
1:35
But if you're not from the South, you might not know about hot boiled peanuts. And what it is, it's exactly what it sounds like
1:42
They put peanuts in the shell and boiling water and some spices in there
1:46
And then they cook it up and they boil it. And it softens the shell
1:50
It softens the peanuts inside and you eat them. And the first time I had it, I had no
1:55
idea what to do I walked into the Kroger and they gave me a styrofoam cup with all
1:58
these wet peanuts like what this like all you eat them so I took the whole thing shut on my aunt I did like no you put it in your mouth kind of chew on it to pop the shell open and then you eat the peanuts from inside and kind of suck the juices out the shell and then you throw away the shell
2:12
But this is one of those things, if you're at a gas station or a bait shop, they will have it there, especially in the summertime, and you want to have it, okay
2:19
Those hot boiled peanuts are very much a thing, but it's not something you see on Broaden or River Street very often, okay
2:26
So that's one thing. If you're out and about and you see it, definitely get it
2:30
And then the third thing, if you're here around New Year's or in the wintertime, if you can go to an oyster roast
2:36
And the thing is, this is one of those things the locals will do. They'll go out to Tyber. They'll go out to the islands
2:40
They'll have all these roasts that have a fire going, and they'll have the big sacks of oysters out there
2:44
And people just cook up those oysters, roast them up with their friends, having some drinks, celebrating the new year
2:49
or just enjoying times with friends. And enjoying those oyster roast is really a thing to do
2:54
But again, if you don't have friends from here, you don't even know about it. You don't even how to do it, or where are you going to get a big place to put the fire
3:00
and all the stuff to do it. It not something tourists usually get to do but if you get a chance to go to an oyster roast when you here in Savannah you should do it okay But those are really three things I think after years of coming to Savannah and Jocelyn lived here for 10 years before that Our oldest son was born here Like
3:15
this is a place that's near and dear to our hearts, but those are three things that I've seen over the years that tourists really miss out on when they come here to Savannah. Because we all know
3:22
about the fantastic food from the shrimp in the, shrimp in grids to the fantastic southern food
3:27
the chance. I mean, there's so much good food here, but sometimes we miss those three things
3:30
So if you get a chance when you hear in Savannah, don't pass up a low country boil
3:34
you know, with friends, going to get yourself some hot boiled peanuts at a gas station
3:39
or at some of the markets or whatever. Or if you get invited to go to an oyster roast, definitely go
3:44
All right. So if there's other things I'm missing out that tours kind of miss out on, please put in the comment section below because I know Liam will say
3:50
if they don't get Parker's fancy ice, you know, the rabbit turd ice. Yeah, they got good ice at Parker's
3:55
Get their ice. That's another thing you might miss out on because you're going to the restaurants. not to the parkers to get the ice
4:01
So something to think about when you're coming to Savannah. So I wish you all the best
4:05
I say bye from here in Savannah. Eat well, my friends, because you will when you're here
