Merapi Volcano Lava Rock Falls

The active lava dome continues to grow and produce incandescent rockfall avalanches that descended the SW slope of the volcano. Collapsing parts of the flow generated a small avalanches that lifted an ash plumes (so-called phoenix clouds). Pyroclastic flows - turbulent and hot avalanches of hot lava rocks, ash and volcanic gasses mixed together - are being released from the growing dome. Emissions of steam and gases rose 1,300 ft ft (400 m) above the summit and drifted E-NE and W. The 2021 lava-dome volume was an estimated 840,000 cubic meters on 18 March, with a growth rate of about 12,900 cubic meters per day, and continued to shed material down the flank. A total of three pyroclastic flows traveled a maximum of 1 km down the SW flank. Incandescent avalanches, recorded 211 times, traveled as far as 1.2 km down the SW flank. The summit lava dome had grown to 65 m tall and had an estimated volume of 950,000 cubic meters with a growth rate of 12,800 cubic meters per day. The Alert Level remained at 3 (on a scale of 1-4), and the public were warned to stay 5 km away from the summit. The volcano's official alert level remains at 3 (on a scale of 1-4), and the public is being warned to stay at least 5 km away from the summit. Merapi, a steep stratovolcano north of Central Java's capital Yogyakarta, is Indonesia's most active volcano. It erupts on average every 5-10 years and is feared for its deadly pyroclastic flows - avalanches of hot rocks and gas that are generated when parts of new lava domes constructed during eruptions in the summit crater collapse and slide down the mountain's steep flanks. The name "Merapi" from old Javanese language means "the one making fire" is a popular name for volcanoes: another volcano with the same name Merapi is in the Ijen Massif in East Java and similarly called volcano "Marapi" lies on Sumatra Island.
